I do spark plugs every 1000 miles lol. It’s like Christmas every time I get a fresh set in. Lots of experts in here. As 15 years an Evo owner, here goes. Exedy twin, great clutch Don’t think I ever heard him say 400 wheel, so 400 brake is believable Bov depends on mapping. If the car is mapped to release to atmo then go ahead, if not it should be plumbed back into the intake Injectors depend on a few things. Brand and again mapping. Some brands just have better injector technology and adjustability. Some types are known for a rough idle even in a small size. In the states anything below 1200 is small. 1600 is standard fare, but we use loads of ethanol fuel. We used to think boost pressure lifted heads but it’s really detonation that’s the biggest offender. We’re looking at 140-170psi cylinder pressure so adding a couple pounds boost pressure is nothing to get in a twist over. Make sure your mapping is right on. I’ve been doing well over 25psi for more than a decade now with oem head bolts. Yea they understeer. There’s a few things to do in the rear to help. Sway bar and rear diff can be built to kick out a bit If you like the snappy feel then stay with a stock sized turbo. Enjoy
There is nothing wrong with heel toe in the Evo, if you actually knew what you were talking about you'd know that accelerator is setup to be level with the brake when you're braking hard. Every other problem you list is your car specific, own it. It isnt a problem with Evos like you keep saying.
Lee you only had a wrx ? comparing it to an sti would be a better comparison definitely better interior than evo 😂 im only in preston feel free come over for a face off with my hawkeye sti ... 😉
My good mate had a evo9 gt around 5/6yrs ago now, beautiful car and not hugely in to japenese cars, I’m sure his was around 600bhp, it’s probably the fastest car I’ve ever been in, the stopping power was unreal too. It was as if it was on rails, blew my mind actually! Again not standard in any way from engine to suspension and brakes but what a car that was.
Ultimate Evo in my eyes, Love the Evo 9 GT and Evo 9 MR RS, proper drivers cars, People go on about the Tommi Mak Evo 6 being the ultimate Evo, but there no difference to a Evo 6 GSR except different front bumper/coloured interior/Titanium turbo.
Lee the Cobra alarm sucks your car was meant to have keyfobs the one your using is an override switch if there battery goes flat try contacting Cobra (owned by Vodafone now) about replacements. I’m the opposite keyfob no overide key 😂
As others have said, great review and no holes barred comments on your own car. I second what other people have said, a dyno run to see what the power is at, should be a follow up video. Great progress and beautiful car
The reason your evo runs rich after boosting is because the BOV is venting to atmosphere instead of it being recirculated back into the intake. So the car is expecting that extra air after you let off from boosting, but instead its getting none and still thinks it needs to compensate. weird how the guy how gave you the maps for the car didn't account for the bov. Also people in America call them blow off valves too, don't think I've ever heard someone call them vent to atmospheres lol
The Led and paper flywheel comparison you made is bang on. i was thinking to myself about how much slower My WRX revs up compared to my old V6 MG. Might have to have a look at a lightened flywheel for it 🤔
To fix the lumpy idle caused by the injectors just bypass the resistance pack for the injectors. It's to do with the impedance and if they're not matched it will be lumpy when cold. It's super cheap and we'll worth doing, again about £20.
I actually remember the top gear episode of clarkson complaining about turning circle lol. I always thought the Subaru was cooler (imo) but the evo was more of a capable car, better for a circuit etc

I’ve had a 95’ evo 3 GSR and a classic 97’ Scooby STI. The Scooby was definitely more enjoyable and mechanically reliable to own than the evo but the evo was quicker, although they were both putting out roughly 310hp, Scooby maybe a little more but didn’t always feel like it. I’m not going to say I’d choose one over the other because they were both great cars in there own ways.
Hi Lee, your Evo is looking good. I like the wide wings and how the shape follows around from the front edge of the bonnet. And I think that the colour is just right. Has come a long way since you purchased it and I have enjoyed following the progress.
I've owned a Gc8 V4 sti type RA and an evo 3 gsr. Evo was definitely the quicker car point to point. Sti felt like it had been put together alot better than the evo though and the interior was a much nicer place to be. The sti type rA was much better setup to modify also with a closed deck block from factory, seam welded chassis, light weight glass and panels and a driver adjustable centre diff to really tune in the power delivery. You definitely need try an sti with the dccd Lee. 👍
If you try some thinner driving shoes (Sports Direct Lonsdales for like £25 work great) and roll your foot over rather than trying to do it with your actual heel, then heel/toe is easier
weird u say the evo picks up faster as from what ive heard the evos have more lag than the sti's you are comparing to a wrx tho which do have alot of lag
@@itsleelockwood Well they're certainly not big. I used to run 2150cc injectors in my 8 before going to staged injection and it would start and idle just fine. Not having a dig or anything but 1000cc injectors should be running like factory.
Also, you should be on Speed Density (MAFless) if you want to run a vent to atmo BOV without issues. Will also help with the reversion you're no doubt experiencing from your metal intake pipe also. These are things I'd hope your tuner would be educating you on.

Resorting to the handbrake is a very bad thing to do in an evo. By dragging the brake or locking the rear wheels you are putting massive stress on the awd drive train. Rally cars have a switch that somewhat disconnects drive when you pull on the handbrake Lee
adrian W source? I’ve had an evo 8 for a couple of years and one of my favourite things to do is rip the handbrake, u-turn and power out with a little bit of sideways action. No issues.

Hi Lee, great vid, really enjoyable reviewing best car. Few points to add to yours. 1. My 8 doesn't have any cold idling issues, as when you fire it up it runs on faster cold idle, then drops back when warm. Never feels like stalling and has 1000cc injectors, 1.5 bar peak boost and at 380bhp / 350 torque. I am running OEM airbox with just Cosworth panel filter though. 2. I have key fob & over ride key, although have a weird thing where sometimes immobiliser doesn't seem to deactivate first time & have to re lock & un lock doors to get it to start. 3. You don't have to have MR for good interior, mine is an FQ330 and comes with Ralliart seats etc. Kept original 8 steering wheel as I like the brushed metal look & goes with dash & door switches. Your interior wrap looks cool though & you done a good job mate. 4. I need a new exhaust for next year........should I straight pipe or back box? Do you have to go to friendly MOT to pass without Cat? 5. I agree with all your likes & dislikes, poor turning circle, super fast steering.I would add to watch for rust, as they're not well protected, almost as bad as an 80's Ford lol.
