Dont waste time trying to be come manager, sr.manager, director, sr.director, VP etc,. its a TRAP route, you will get thrown away one-day for SURE !!
Your problem is that you worked in a HR firm. Go and see how important project managers are in a serious tech company. They make or break the most important projects.

If you are in IT and after 40 years of age if salary is the only source of income then you are f**d. One needs to urgently focus on creating other streams of income, however small they are. Upskilling, reskilling, certifications, MBAs etc are over hyped and only give diminishing results. There is a high chance that the new skills one acquires will be out of favor too soon with the advent of AI and rapid change in tech, processes etc. What one can do for other streams of income? One has to deep dive and find out suitable ones. The motto is it's never too late and never give up.
The reality is in any big company, there are a lot of bullshit roles. Do you really need a SDM, TPM and Product Manager in a small project? Do you really need a Scrum master? All there are bloatware. In a booming market a lot of new roles get created and downturn, all such roles are emilnated.
one thing for sure is if you are introvert and try to to do our job alone without contacting superiors , not making good rapport with them then one day or other you got to be fired

I am upskilling myself in AI and cloud but that didn't stop my layoff. With deteriorating market conditions, all companies are obsessed about reducing opex and middle mgmt is an easy target. In my case Ageism is also a factor so now I am preparing to do freelancing from 2025. Hope I will be successful.

Normal developers struggle to see end to end picture itself, without experience they cant give timeline for project completion itself. I see trend of techno project managers , sandwiches of technical lead and project & program manager is getting attraction recent market. But making department wide or group wide decisions vp is required.
My request to all organisations, please start understanding the realities of the so called non technical managers, people managers who are core responsible for most of the project failures/delays. They will be taking unnecessary calls whole day and will research only on putting blames over IC roles
