And my family had no connection at all to Romania. But my father, born in the USA, spoke and understood Yiddish from his parents. We had this Columbia 78 record, Aaron Lebedeff singing, which my father loved to hear. Every so often, he would ask me to play the record. I have no idea why he loved it so but it is genetic. My father claimed that once he heard you speak Yiddish, he could tell immediately where your family was from. But he was fooled once by a Galician, a "glitz" to him.

I needed a few minutes to compose myself after listening to this piece. I played it while having an afternoon latte in a Starbucks. The staggering beauty of the piece literally brought tears to my eyes and then laughter. I sat there with 50 or so coffee addicts alternatively openly and loudly laughing and crying. Sheer beauty. I love tis song, and I was looking through the internet for a version where I could see the lyrics and a translation (sadly I don't speak Yiddish. My mother's parents did, but my father's didn't, so there was no yiddish spoken in our house). I came across this new version and absolutely loved it. Temma Schaechter did a fabulous job, and that whole performance was just magic. Wish I'd been there.
Just fantastic, this arrangement. Majestic, intimate, funny, contemporary and nostalgic--all at the same time. Different from the original, but always apt in harmony and structure. This is stupendous!!!! Temma's performance is beautiful, but beyond that: the harmonies are gorgeous, the references to the Rumanian background and experiences of Temma's grandfather, famed Yiddishist, Prof. Mordkhe Schaechter, the choir's exhuberance, the thrill of the energy of this piece -- this is so exciting. I am so glad that I happened upon it, on re-visiting the video of the French-Yiddish medley (which I have forwarded to my Belgian-born student of Hebrew). Temma's voice and technique are growing -- she's wonderful -- her voice is so free and lovely, yet well-supported. A major sh'koyikh to Binyumen, Temma and the JPPC. This is a more playful, merry, endearing version of the haunting, nostalgic, heart-breaking song made famous by Aaron Lebedeff in the 1940s (to the point of being adopted by Jews who, like him, had no family connections to Romania). This new version is meant for new generations who need (cultural) translations of Yiddish, and of its lost world(s), not only of the few Romanian words. Not to mention historical footnotes. A close friend of mine from the US, Adrian Rusanowski, sent this new version to three of his closest friends living in other three countries (Canada, Sweden, Romania; back in the Seventies, we were all attending high-school in Iași, Romania). He did this today, December 1, Romania's national day. None of us is Jewish. Romania stands here for the lost Utopia (or rather Arcadia), and this is one of the most beautiful tributes to that fantasy. It can be shared by all. For a few minutes, we can all forget that history was different...

My parents were from Romania. They moved to Israel after they got married several years after the war. My mother told me that it wasn't good at all. There was severe poverty and discrimination from the Christian neighbors
Several years later after the war, Romanian rise without any help on it's own strength and tryed to keep itself independent, let's not forget that Romania rise itself from agriculture, with some factories destroyed, some debts due to war towards Germany and Russians, then the romanians also had to starve in north-east to pay it's debts towards russia in agriculture exports. People didn't had with what to feed their childrens in the 1947-1949 time periods, when there were no rains and the agriculture really threat to death entire families and their kids life. We speak about a country which later again had to suffer like an economical war, to pay 21 billion $ debt, as communist took loan 14 billion$ from Americans, best products were always going towards exports, and romanians were happy to have something being refused in other countries, lived with energy cut at 10 pm and with cars limited to go by impare and pare numbers by days. Discrimination and severe poverty, well not only jews were target, even pure romanians would have lost their lands, and even kill if opposing to communists, the intelectual people did prison for being a threat. I don't believe that is anymore relevant to compare apples from 1950.. to 2022. Romanians are in general dumping their country in negative feedbacks, even nowadays we have very harsh and bad opinnions over ourself and how the country would go by, but strangers see it different and appreciate something else, we have no education to see and belief in ourself. Your mother maybe was a Romanian once, but after 72 years i can't tell how that's relevant to a song which really speak about food and wine. Even nowadays people from foreign countries are loving the drinks and food cook in Romania. Romania changed much more than your parents would have imagine, nowadays people have access to more education, to more documentaries, to series you could watch on streaming platforms. I think is much to talk nowadays about, when the whole jewish community were banish by war and communists from Romania. Communists had attempts to control jewish community, they kind of wanted jews in soviet states, to be like some heroes which freedom and win the war for jewish people. Some stuffs are still same, i mean people even nowadays wait with the days to get the papers for getting some approval for smth, going left and right for papers, jews were better to leave the communist regime, it wasn't an easy life in Romania, even building something in communist ideology, as we had infrastructure high pushed and developed, cities build from scratch, and more and more stuffs research and adapted to romanian needs in tehnology. I am not sure why the jewish community never actually made it back after fall of communist, probably Romania is the only country which really never made it back towards having a jewish community at the level it use to have, i think there is just a number of 6 k jews in Romania.

Not everyone thinks of the Jewish Homeland as "Home". Some of us prefer to think of Israel in the context of the name given to Ya'akov, representing his struggle with G-d, which we as a unified people do regularly, and not as the piece of dirt in the middle east. Even in the Torah (B'midbar ch 32), Reuven, Gad, and Menashe chose to settle in Jazer and Gilead, yet they supported the other tribes in settling in Israel. It also seems counterproductive to be placing blame on people with no relationship to the exile when it was caused by people who are no longer alive There's nothing wrong with celebrating another country that one thinks of as home, nor should such a song be censored because others disagree with the poet's sentiments towards another country. I wouldn't boycott Oklahoma! just because someone else took it upon themselves to sing praises for a place I don't consider home. (Additionally, without context, this piece could be relevant to a Yiddish play that was set in Romania, and have nothing to do with the poet's sentiments on Romania at all, but be relevant to the character or story of said play)
This song reduces the mighty crossing of the red sea to a meaningless bedtime story hidden under the dust of history but in the same an indicative of the 'rebellion virus' to which this chosen people of Hashem still prefers to succumb. I agree with u but I think the problem is bigger than that. This seems to be consonant with the Hebrew behaviour as recorded by Moses, namely, after having been freed from slavery and they found themselves on their way to the promised land, they started getting nostalgic about the nice foods and green vegetables they used to enjoy in Egypt. This nostalgia was not commended neither by Moses nor by God who had freed them from the 'land of good foods'. God took them out of Egypt / Romania but He still has to take Egypt/Romania out of them. Grumbling about the good food of slavery is indeed childish to say the least, be it on a musical format..

This is stupendous!!!! Temma's performance is beautiful, but beyond that: the harmonies are gorgeous, the references to the Rumanian background and experiences of Temma's grandfather, famed Yiddishist, Prof. Mordkhe Schaechter, the choir's exhuberance, the thrill of the energy of this piece -- this is so exciting. I am so glad that I happened upon it, on re-visiting the video of the French-Yiddish medley (which I have forwarded to my Belgian-born student of Hebrew). Temma's voice and technique are growing -- she's wonderful -- her voice is so free and lovely, yet well-supported. A major sh'koyikh to Binyumen, Temma and the JPPC. I'm assuming Binyumen did the amazing arrangement?

This song has been around, in recorded form, for nearly a century now. I first heard it on a 78 rpm disk that my mother had.
I have seen this performed once before. The singer explained that this is, let me put it this way, "an upside down song" about how... w o n d e r f u l... it was for us in . . . Rumania ( ! )

This is a more playful, merry, endearing version of the haunting, nostalgic, heart-breaking song made famous by Aaron Lebedeff in the 1940s (to the point of being adopted by Jews who, like him, had no family connections to Romania). This new version is meant for new generations who need (cultural) translations of Yiddish, and of its lost world(s), not only of the few Romanian words. Not to mention historical footnotes. A close friend of mine from the US, Adrian Rusanowski, sent this new version to three of his closest friends living in other three countries (Canada, Sweden, Romania; back in the Seventies, we were all attending high-school in Iași, Romania). He did this today, December 1, Romania's national day. None of us is Jewish. Romania stands here for the lost Utopia (or rather Arcadia), and this is one of the most beautiful tributes to that fantasy. It can be shared by all. For a few minutes, we can all forget that history was different...

Complimenti,un mondo andato per sempre,i vecchietti della Romania lo raccontavano,per noi,gli ebrei sono stati un valore aggiunto,lo sviluppo del nostro paese è dovuto in gran parte all'intraprendenza negli affari proprio di questa minoranza,dopo la seconda guerra mondiale gran parte di loro se ne andata, Israele,Stati Uniti,etc... peccato.

Indeed, Romania used to be a paradise lost by the WWII and not only for the Jews...To watch one of the best Hatikva performance (if not the best) check TH-cam "Laura Bretan, Hatikva", I think it took place last year in Romanian Aheneum, Bucharest. Shalom!

My parents were from Romania. They moved to Israel after they got married several years after the war.
My mother told me that it wasn't good at all. There was severe poverty and discrimination from the Christian neighbors
Several years later after the war, Romanian rise without any help on it's own strength and tryed to keep itself independent, let's not forget that Romania rise itself from agriculture, with some factories destroyed, some debts due to war towards Germany and Russians, then the romanians also had to starve in north-east to pay it's debts towards russia in agriculture exports. People didn't had with what to feed their childrens in the 1947-1949 time periods, when there were no rains and the agriculture really threat to death entire families and their kids life.
We speak about a country which later again had to suffer like an economical war, to pay 21 billion $ debt, as communist took loan 14 billion$ from Americans, best products were always going towards exports, and romanians were happy to have something being refused in other countries, lived with energy cut at 10 pm and with cars limited to go by impare and pare numbers by days. Discrimination and severe poverty, well not only jews were target, even pure romanians would have lost their lands, and even kill if opposing to communists, the intelectual people did prison for being a threat.
I don't believe that is anymore relevant to compare apples from 1950.. to 2022. Romanians are in general dumping their country in negative feedbacks, even nowadays we have very harsh and bad opinnions over ourself and how the country would go by, but strangers see it different and appreciate something else, we have no education to see and belief in ourself.
Your mother maybe was a Romanian once, but after 72 years i can't tell how that's relevant to a song which really speak about food and wine. Even nowadays people from foreign countries are loving the drinks and food cook in Romania.
Romania changed much more than your parents would have imagine, nowadays people have access to more education, to more documentaries, to series you could watch on streaming platforms. I think is much to talk nowadays about, when the whole jewish community were banish by war and communists from Romania. Communists had attempts to control jewish community, they kind of wanted jews in soviet states, to be like some heroes which freedom and win the war for jewish people.
Some stuffs are still same, i mean people even nowadays wait with the days to get the papers for getting some approval for smth, going left and right for papers, jews were better to leave the communist regime, it wasn't an easy life in Romania, even building something in communist ideology, as we had infrastructure high pushed and developed, cities build from scratch, and more and more stuffs research and adapted to romanian needs in tehnology.
I am not sure why the jewish community never actually made it back after fall of communist, probably Romania is the only country which really never made it back towards having a jewish community at the level it use to have, i think there is just a number of 6 k jews in Romania.

Not everyone thinks of the Jewish Homeland as "Home". Some of us prefer to think of Israel in the context of the name given to Ya'akov, representing his struggle with G-d, which we as a unified people do regularly, and not as the piece of dirt in the middle east. Even in the Torah (B'midbar ch 32), Reuven, Gad, and Menashe chose to settle in Jazer and Gilead, yet they supported the other tribes in settling in Israel.
It also seems counterproductive to be placing blame on people with no relationship to the exile when it was caused by people who are no longer alive
There's nothing wrong with celebrating another country that one thinks of as home, nor should such a song be censored because others disagree with the poet's sentiments towards another country. I wouldn't boycott Oklahoma! just because someone else took it upon themselves to sing praises for a place I don't consider home. (Additionally, without context, this piece could be relevant to a Yiddish play that was set in Romania, and have nothing to do with the poet's sentiments on Romania at all, but be relevant to the character or story of said play)
This song reduces the mighty crossing of the red sea to a meaningless bedtime story hidden under the dust of history but in the same an indicative of the 'rebellion virus' to which this chosen people of Hashem still prefers to succumb. The day is coming when Hashem will purge his beloved people from this virus. Beware, this day may be just around the corner!!

I agree with u but I think the problem is bigger than that. This seems to be consonant with the Hebrew behaviour as recorded by Moses, namely, after having been freed from slavery and they found themselves on their way to the promised land, they started getting nostalgic about the nice foods and green vegetables they used to enjoy in Egypt. This nostalgia was not commended neither by Moses nor by God who had freed them from the 'land of good foods'. God took them out of Egypt / Romania but He still has to take Egypt/Romania out of them. Grumbling about the good food of slavery is indeed childish to say the least, be it on a musical format..
