I would probably give Comp Cams a call. There are a lot of factors when selecting a camshaft. They will ask you all sorts of things like what transmission you're running, cylinder heads, ect. They are very helpful.
Great video. The video series is my reference for my engine overhaul, they are very helpful. I have a tip for installing the camshaft, maybe it will help you or others: 1. when the camshaft is in the 4th bearing I put a piece of a cable behind the bearing. (in the direction of bearing 5) 2. if I guide the camshaft a little further into the block, I can use both ends of the cable to lift the camshaft slightly and guide it better. 3. once the camshaft is completely in the block, I can simply pull the cable out.

Hi Alex, just watched the newest video today on lifters and oil pump priming. When you mentioned Comp lifters, I had to come back to this video and see this Comp cam. That surprised me considering all the quality issues with Comp Cams and lifters. Good luck hope everything works as designed. You should be fine with the hydraulic flat tappet cam and lifters. Thanks for sharing.
Oh I am unaware of so many issues with comp cams. So far so good. This engine has actually been done for several weeks and the car is back in the possession of the owner. But all the more reason to be extra cautious.
Another great video. After all the 289 rebuild has been completed. What engine oil would you use after breaking in. Would you go synthetic 30 weight. Thanks Paul
You're very welcome. It's definitely a lot more. I looked into it for this engine because it was an unknown amount of time to even get a nice flat tappet camshaft. But the rollers were in stock. Ultimately the client was willing to wait since we are doing a lot of other things to his car.
What company would you recommend for buying a disc brake conversion kit? I’ve heard that Kentucky Mustangs is good and CJ Mustangs are poorly made. I’m not looking for Wilwood, but a one that’s decent and affordable.
Hey Alf, wondering if you can help me out with some confusion, I followed your video and installed my new cam, is it normal to have 3/16 play in and out? There is currently no lifter in the bores just the cam, am I missing something?
@Alf's Mustang Garage at the moment just the cam is in without the thrust plate, the timming components are also off, it just looked off to me so I stopped till I can confirm everything is still good 👍 thanks for the reply
Moly lube I only only use for flat tappet camshafts. It has proper break in agents and additives for that first start up that conventional assembly lube doesn't have.

That sounds normal if you don't have the timing chain on. Once the timing chain is installed, it should keep the cam up against the thrust plate.

Why moly lube on the lobes versus assembly lube?
Moly lube I only only use for flat tappet camshafts. It has proper break in agents and additives for that first start up that conventional assembly lube doesn't have.
