Spider-Man 2 Ending Explained With Creative Director

- Bryan Intihar, Senior Creative Director at Insomniac Games, joins Lucy James and Tamoor Hussain to discuss all things Spider-Man 2 including the game's emotional end.
Through two games, Insomniac as established itself as one of the premiere storytellers in the Spider-Man universe. It’s first adventure with the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man took familiar story beats that fans of Peter Parker have seen told and retold numerous times, but managed to weave them into a new unexpectedly fresh story that focuses on character development and deep, rich relationship dynamics.
Insomniac’s follow-up was a Miles Morales-focused title that had gave the studio more room to flex is narrative muscles. Like Peter’s story, Miles’s journey was one of deep personal growth, unexpected challenges, and heart-wrenching tragedies. When all was said and done, Miles had gained the strength and conviction to use his newfound abilities for good. And for us, we had two incredibly compelling Spider-Men.
For Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, Insomniac brings together both characters in a single ambitious story that finds both Spider-Men dealing with things that could push them off their paths. Peter struggles with loss and the threat of more of it, while Miles struggles to find his place in the world. And to make life even harder, Kraven the Hunter has made New York his latest hunting ground. The events of the game peel back more layers of Peter, Miles, MJ, and others in a way that makes it worthy of discussing and breaking down. And that’s exactly what happens in this video.
Tamoor and Lucy sit down with Insomniac’s Bryan Intihar to discuss the narrative ambitions for the game, break down some key moments, and unpack important characters. There’s also a little discussion on a few ideas Insomniac left on the cutting room floor.

You can tell he’s very excited to tell how it all came together because they made a very SOLID Spider-Man universe
That's what makes the best of development teams
Solid MARVEL universe. I wonder how many Marvel superhero games they will make. They’ve already got Spider-Man and Wolverine, who knows what else they make.
I totally agree because in my opinion we haven’t had a mutually praised superhero video game universe since the Arkham games and it’s incredible how not only the gameplay is fantastic but the fact they went in the way the MCU writes there stories and only taking references from the comics and making a fresh new story and doing an amazing job with it. I’m sure everyone who’s a fan of these games can confidently say Spider-Man 2 will at least in the top choices for game of the year if not gaining the award entirely

As much as I wish that the third act was longer, I’m happy with what we got! I just wish the game didn’t feel so empty afterwards
they’re HEAVILY relying on DLC. that has to be the conclusion cause there’s not a single person that’s played it that is either a fan of it or not that doesn’t say it feels empty. even if you leave a lot of the nests and side quests unchecked it still feels oddly abrupt.
@@radicallybean fr. too short main story
@@radicallybeani agree, I didn’t really pay no mind to the first games DLC, the main game had so much to offer and was completely satisfying but that cost me some minor story understanding for this game but this story felt way too short which leaves room for more to be desired, and the side quests aren’t even completely visible without swinging through every nook and cranny, they should’ve added a way to completely pinpoint each side event in each district, that would’ve given players a scope of how much content is present during and after the main story.
It felt as empty as that old man’s inhaler that you helped in the park because he lost it and he also got lost kind of and his grandkid or something was worried about him but soiderman was there to save the day and that was so satisfying because we all can relate to missing medication 💊

That was such a good interview with the creative director. It honestly felt like a genuine conversation explaining how Insomniac thinks when they approach these games. He seems like such a nice guy who cares deeply about Marvel and the lore behind everything they include in their stories. Love it!
This games story was so good. I really recommend replaying it because there are so many subtle moments. Harry worrying about being replaced fueling venom. Not just the scene with Peter and Norman but in the tombstone mission even though harry knows who miles is he just says “the other guy” when talking about the team name miles and Peter have and harry tries to create a name. He knows Peter is hesitant dedicate to the foundation because he’s a mentor to miles. Noticing the development of that story adds a lot to venom and the final fight with venom and miles
I don't think him saying the other guy was a hit to Miles.
I think he was just talking and that came out
At some point, Harry even called Miles while swinging to try and establish a hint of friendship between the two. it's a shame they didn't find a way to incorporate more of that to make the final fight between Miles and Venom more impactful. I also thought it would've been cool if the symbiote called itself Venom because of Miles' powers just because it was such a powerful ability.
Those interactions between the characters are amazing but i feel like the game could have a bit more of story to develop better that final plot. Symbiote spiderman arc felt rushed
The final fight should not have been between Miles and Venom. Miles and Harry had one conversation before that in the whole game! They have no connection, it just makes Peter look weak and takes away from his connection to have the final fight against HIS enemy, an enemy who is both the symbiote which took him over and has control over his best friend, be beaten by the player as Miles who has NOTHING to do with Venom. Peter has been taking Ls all game and having Miles show him up AGAIN just makes Peter look weak.
Waiting for NG+
I could listen to Bryan talk about this universe for hours. It's so interesting hearing different behind the scenes tidbits and stories from the director.
this is my first time watching an interview with a creative director from a game i think, and honestly i don’t know why i haven’t done it before. this interview was a delight to watch, and i think it’s incredibly validating to see that the people behind the game are just as excited about it as the players, and they also geek out about the lore and characters. bryan seems like such a cool dude to just hang out with too. love the he gave credit to his team and colleagues, holding them in such high esteem. thank you for this video!

The insomniac team are the only writers recently that have been able to successfully tell very human stories through a super human lens. It's so cool how they can take characters with unrelatable powers, yet make them feel relatable by not focusing on those powers, but rather on their internal struggles, which are then expressed outwardly through fantastical elements. The Scream fight represents this perfectly: MJ is angry, resentful and hurt. Up until that point she had been bottling all of those feelings up, but by becoming scream, she was able to express all her most destructive emotions, which manifested themselves in a literal monster! That's the kind of storytelling that's compelling! Our heroes aren't just fighting literal monsters, they're fighting monsters, which are physical manifestations of their own internal human struggles! Other superhero media seems to have forgotten this, as all they focus on is the spectacle, but they leave out all substance! I'm glad Insomniac remembers how to write GOOD superhero stories!
I would say that Invincible has achieved a very similar thing but I agree overall!
Your post is right on the money! I just said something similar on another forum. It's a breath of fresh air to see adaptations that understand the universe, characters, and can make compelling stories that are relatable and grounded with very real human emotions. I won't say more, because you honestly said it perfectly. It is the truth though and more creators need to take note. At this point, I'd rather they not even make superhero movies if they are going to continue down the path they have. They are definitely watered down and simplified beyond redemption at this point. They aren't doing anything except hurting cinema in general at this point, let alone the source material of the comics and superheroes. Sounds means what I've said, but I would just prefer creators take the the source material seriously. Some people have a very soft spot for comics and superheroes, and we don't want to see them trivialized and watered down. We want the heart and emotion they bring with them as well. Not just the spectacle like you said.
Bryan is the reason why this interpretation of Peter Parker was nearly perfection in all medias.
The thinking from scratch, coming with derived solution from pre-existing literature, there's no doubt the really were thoughtful while making theses games and it reflects that the plot is actually so much better than some movies even. They really took it to a whole 'nother level
Honestly you gotta remember game cinematics are generally like 20-40hours plus depending on the game, you could legit take this games story and make a small mini series out of it, not to mention there story telling is by far better then what the mcu has been pushing out besides Loki season 2 rn that show is fire
@@Thisguy2532 Bro you literally jus spoke my mind there.
I cannot wait for Wolverine and the future of Spider-Man 2! This game was genuinely a masterpiece and a VERY worthy successor
Knowing how Mr. Negative + the symbiote + Miles all culminated together in retrospect to make the Anti-Venom suit is so cool! Especially given how the Anti-Ock suit was the suit Spider-Man donned for the final boss fight in the first game. It's all so clever!
When they freed tombstone I was shocked that venom could withstand fire and thought I misremembered that weakness lol
So happy Spiderman and Wolverine end up on their hand. They put so much love and time on these game production.
I still have no idea why people think Peter is done being Spiderman it's a break
It’s because people are choosing to make fake narratives instead of actually paying attention to the story🤦🏾♂️
Nah fr, especially if Norman is to turn to the goblin and finally, officially bring the sinsister six? There's no way Miles handle that on his own even in 616 comics Peter struggles. Like sometimes, Spider-Man really is a two person job if you can have it. The way I see it is he's gonna hold own to his job and focus there more and come by when either miles needs it or "by force" come through.
@@MrInstinctGamer exactly, I’m a Peter Parker main also and in this story it was soo good for me to see both these arcs that Peter and miles had. The Peter Parker only fans are just mad that Peter received help from miles, the guy that he literally trained, and I think they also are mad because miles is now officially coming into his own. It’s ridiculous
I haven't heard/read anyone saying that they think that.

Like I dunno- Friggin Big-Wheel and the Trapster or something just fun and semi quick to beat up. Also really surprised we still haven't had ANY Marvel Cameos outside of Spider-Man tbh
I agree with not having as many villains to fight. Especially after battling the sinister six in the first game. But about the cameos: I'm actually super impressed and happy with how they made such a good game with a well written story without relying on all these cameos and fan service
@zaphenathgarcia Still surprised Wolverine didn't show up. They are making a Wolverine game and everything. Even in Web Of Shadows and Ultimate Spider-Man had Wolverine in it. And those games both inspired this story, so just very surprising to me.

Did get a note from Wu saying the Doctor and him owed us one. That was pretty cool.
Journalism is dead. Y’all just want free copies of games and to be in their good graces.
Forgiveness is the most misunderstood concept. Miles says “I can’t forgive you” but then proceeds to forgive him. Forgiveness doesn’t mean saying something’s okay and forgetting about it. It means freeing yourself from the hatred and anger you feel towards someone who wronged you. That line bugs me.
The game was amazing. Hoping for the venom spin-off and wherever the story goes from here!

The Venom symbiote was destroyed. How would they bring it back then?
There could still be part of it in him like how it was for Peter
@@carterhalo255Well it's Peter's property now. Besides it became Anti-Venom and pretty much bonded to him forever until the 3rd game.
You sir are a real hero in my eyes, thank you for making my childhood dreams come true, these games are truly phenomenal
I love how Kraven wasn’t shown much in the game, but he was so menacing when he did, that he just became this boogeyman, this ominous presence. And at the same time, you understand his motivations. Don’t agree with it, but you understand it and it fits the character perfectly.
What a masterpiece of a game 👌🏽
playing with venom was the by far the best choice insomniac could've made, i can really see how they bought amazing elements from other great games i personally loved like Ultimate Spider-Man with playable Venom, Spider-Man Web of Shadows for the Symbiote infection in New York
That pigeon mission was phenominal.
I'm so glad I watched this after finishing the game. You can see the passion in the game.
Imagine the hype when Miles is having his own start as Spiderman then Otto Octavius and Norman formed an alliance, Carnage is introduced, Black Cat Returns, Venom is now Eddie Brock, Green Goblin as Final boss fight, Peter definitely makes a return in which it's now more looking grim for Miles to take all the villain by himself and Norman wants both spider-men not just one. So Peter is taking a break but not retiring that's for sure. Spider-Man 3 will be much longer.
Bring on Spider-Man 3 with green goblin, carnage and silk
Bryan Inithar famous now. Doning the Clark Kent attire to go undercover 🤣. Him and his team deserves all the success in the whole.
I like miles taking the mantle but making Pete a damsel for mj and miles to save several times wasn’t good. Miles doesn’t have to be great at Pete’s expense.
The only gripe i have against this game is I wish it had more. Great game. GOTY in my opinion.
Nope. 35 hours for me to platinum on hard mode is the sweet spot.
You rather the game become Assassins Creed Origins with bloated, unnecessary filler content? Assassins Creed Origins was a great game, but it would have been boarder info on being a masterpiece if it had just cut back on the unnecessary extra bull$hit questlines.
@cbgg1585 I platinum the game in around 26hrs. I did the all the side content available before moving on to the next story mission. So by the time the credits rolled the only side missions I had was the seeds Harry left for Peter. I'm not saying the game should be 100 hour's long like Valhalla was but Ragnarök was like 50hrs including all the side content. I think that was the sweet spot.
@@cbgg1585Assassins Creed Origins is fantastic its Odyssey and especially Valhalla that's bloated. Valhalla I just couldn't stick with because of how long the story is and how much extra content there is. Odyssey I went for the platinum and got it in reasonable time, it's honestly my favorite game in the franchise. Spider-man 2 was almost perfect. The suit choices were lame, too many movie suits and guest created stuff, not enough comic suits oh and the lack of NG+ at launch.
@user-rk8sz6yi8u I know how people are. As someone who is fortunate to have been able to play The Forgotten Kingdom and Starfield now Spider-Man 2. I will say that without a shadow of a doubt, Spider-Man 2 is my GOTY. I just wish there was more. Like when you have a delicious pizza, but you're also sharing the pie, and you only eat 2 slices. THABK YOU BRYAN AND INSOMNIAC! This is one of the best video game I’ve ever played AND best Spider-Man stories I’ve ever seen!
The game has honestly one of the best endings to both a video game and a Spider-Man story I’ve ever seen! The fight with Venom alone is incredibly tough and challenging, but you can absolutely feel the pain in Peter as he’s trying with every fiber of his being to reach Harry.
What I really love though is that Peter has finally admitted to himself and MJ that he is *truly tired,* not just physically but spiritually and emotionally. As much as he likes being Spider-Man, he wants to finally put all of his focus on himself and MJ. And the way he told Miles was perfect, he’s absolutely confident that he trained his apprentice well enough that he can handle being the one and only Spider-Man.
And in the final post credit scene when they introduced Cindy Moon aka Silk I jumped with joy. She is perfect for this game series!
Insomniac is the best
"You got it, Spider-Man' was such an emotional line at the end.
You clearly didn't get the game, Peter's thing was that he didn't have balance
He's not retiring or hanging up the suit at all. He takes a break at the end. Throughout the whole game, it's shown he was still taking most of the responsibility, the burden of it
At the end, Peter decides to fully share the burden with Miles. Because Miles is capable and has become his own Spider-Man. Now they are truly equals
I agree. I found that development emotionally fulfilling.@@FatKratos69

If Spider-Man 2 is your definition of ruining a character, I wish all my characters were ruined
@@Mun3001s nothing is ruined in Marvel's Spider Man 2. Don't listen to him. Bryan Intihar never disappoints
Im not buying Spider-Man 3 if Peter isn’t gonna be the main Spider-Man
Yet you will be on youtube watching the cut scenes. Your loss man. Its pretty obvious that both are the main and he will be back. If you think Peter is gone then 😂😂😂 come on man think
Sorry dude peter isn’t diverse enough. Miles is the better Spider-Man according to insomniac because Peter isn’t strong enough
@@Mop154this has never been said or suggested by them, ever
@@Mop154Peter is strong. Miles is the main one for now because Peter is taking a break. Peter will be the main one in Spider Man 3 and fight Green Goblin
@@Shahriyararin63I swear bro, ppl did not even pay attention, and they be goin around saying “NO PETER RETIRED”
This game continues to prove that video game writers are far better than movie writers.
current movie writers, industry is a mess at the moment
Video game writers aren't forced to set up five other sequels in three hours while advertising for ten products, actors physical limitations/contracts gauranteeing them specific screen time/availability etc. Video game writers can write anything they want to actually happen without limits of a physical world and real people. It's a completely different job.
I'm Expecting Red Goblin, because we still have Cletus and Norman. But maaaan, if you give us Knull? That would be a dream.
This was a great interview with the questions and how they communicated back and forth.
I really greatly appreciate the portrayal and design of Venom in this game. I have yet to see either Venom movies with Tom Hardy because to me, that's not TRUE Venom. Venom shouldn't be "funny" or goofy. He's not an "anti hero" in the sense most people use that term. He's a TRUE ANTI hero, meaning he's a straight up, horrifying villain. He's a murderous alien who literally eats people and his motives and goals in this game are very clear and make sense on top of him being a blood thirsty rage monster. Couldn't have asked for a better Venom in a great Spidey game. Props to the whole team at Insomniac.
I hope they set up silk a little bit in a dlc similar to Miles in the first game and then give her a stand alone game like MM
Insomniac doing spider man for me as a fan personally feels like santamonica to do a conan game for conan fans......
amazing interview, just got through the game. I want more now lol. Hoping we get DLC eventually.
It's hilarious that Bryan comes onto all of these shows and is super open, like how is this even allowed? Not complaining. I love seeing him geek out about his team and the games.
I’m genuinely curious, this isn’t meant to come across as rude, but why would he not be allowed?
@@jdrn6275 some companies don’t want their staff spilling the beans and don’t allow them to go on press tours.
I wish we just had more tho more development more of the narrative to explore their feelings more
Played?? Man i platinum'd already
