    I was fortunate to make the Hoboken to Port Jervis to Hoboken trip in 1998. I really enjoyed the experience. Out of curiosity, did you know Charlie Strunk from Hampton, NJ? I went to high school with his son, Nate. I would sit in a bar drinking beer with Charlie while he regaled me with lots of stories of his railroading career. To say he was a character is an understatement.

    I road behind 614 on the Chessie Safety Express back in the early 80’s from Columbus OH down to Russel KY and back. Makes me sad to see it just sitting outside there, hopefully somebody will either restore it once again to working condition or put it inside a nice railroad museum somewhere so it doesn’t rust away.

    1) Your mentions of 2024 have my curiosity peaked. I look forward to hopefully hearing good news for the 614 in the future.
    2) That GPE livery always makes me think about what a shame it is that the plans for the Greenbrier Presidential Express didn’t come to fruition. It would’ve been the most luxurious train in North America if it had come to fruition and actually operated. Plus it would’ve been fantastic to see the 614 running at the head end of the Express. I think it's so very wonderful and fortunate you got to see Ross Rowland again and without a doubt see 614 again if she could talk I'm sure she was happy to see you as well. 614 is my most loved and favorite Northern in both Preservation and Operation I watched all the films of her from the 1980s when she did the coal test trains through the New River Gorge to The Chessie Safety express. I even have a Broadway Limited HO model of her that I cherish. It saddens me to see her cold and Silent but I refuse to give up hope that she will feel a fire in her firebox again and hear her beautiful whistle again. I love all steam locomotives but Lima Locomotives Works was indeed the watch maker of steam and there locomotives are my number one. 614 I feel is the queen of all Lima Locomotives she and her sisters were in my book the finest 4-8-4s ever built. So I hope one day she will move again under her own steam. I am also happy you got to see her again and share that visit with us as well.

    I rode behind 614 up Sand Patch, 17 Mile, Cranberry, and Streets Run Grades with heavy tonnage. Those grades on the old B&O made 614 work to the max. Streets Run Grade out of Pittsburgh was the only one that beat 614 and required a helper.

    • @BobsOGaugeTrains
      @BobsOGaugeTrains  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching Mark. I had the priveledge thanks to Ross Rowland to work on her for six years. In Jersey we didnt have any steep grades but days she pulled between 22 and 26 cars unassisted. Was a treat.

    • @markantony3875
      @markantony3875 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@BobsOGaugeTrains I think we had around 24 cars, except for Cranberry Grade which if I remember right was 16 cars. Cranberry is 12 miles long @ 3%. 24 cars was just too much for Streets Run Grade, but the 614 gave it all she got, but stalled out about 1/2 mile from the tunnel. We had to wait for over an hour for a helper engine which put us way behind schedule. On the return trip, Chessie had helpers assigned from Wheeling back into Pittsburgh, especially for the long and steep grade out of Wheeling up to the tunnel in West Alexander PA. While it was somewhat disappointing to have 2 GP40-2s pulling in front of 614, the bright spot was we were hitting 55 mph in spots with all the extra horsepower. That was quite the thrill as the steep terrain on W&P Sub usually limited freights to 30 mph tops and often in the single digits for speed on the hills.

    I just saw something from Ross I believe that there is going to be an announcement soon and it looks like from the hints that 614 will be restored to operation again. As to where it will run, who knows until more details are made known. It's a picture of 614's number plate and a 97% bar on a black background meaning that the announcement is very soon. How old is Ross Rowland, anyway? He has to be in his 70's now.

Would’ve been pretty to cool to have a Big Emma preserved. Prolly could’ve made for a fine excursion engine too. But ah well.
