I felt old when they asked what a gray market car was? Hoovie should have mentioned that the 500SL wasn't available here and neither were the 500SEL and 745 BMW. We had J Frank Motors in Indianapolis who primarily brought in Mercedes Benz cars. Across the street from William's Rolls Royce in Cincinnati the Lotus dealer ran a gray market place. First BMW M1 I saw and a bunch of 500SELs and the big engined 745i. All with headlight wipers! One thing though is that most of the big MBs had cloth interiors and often the basic heater control instead of climate control (a plus in my opinion) and some had hubcaps instead of alloys. It was an interesting time. But he's not joking about prices, these cars could be at least a third off a 380SEL and sometimes more.
He also neglected to mention that you could not simply put an imported car onto the public roads. The car had to be brought up to US safety and emissions specs for the state it was in and pass inspection before it could be registered. Depending upon the vehicle, that could cost many thousands. I don't think there was nearly as much profit for grey market importers as Hoover imagines.
@@chuckschillingvideos I agree with you about the profit margins, quite a bit of work for certification and other import costs. The consumer prices were very good but again removed more of that margin. I recall Frank saying that he mostly imported Mercedes-Benz cars because they were easier to federalize with standard components. While not exactly gray market, Isis Imports brought in Morgans and had to convert them to propane power and add telescopic bumper brackets similar to the VW Rabbit. To be honest, I think many buyers wanted the Euro headlights with wipers and the good looking bumpers. Some like that 500SL were irritated with the 380SL lack of power. That said, I remember quite a few six cylinder SL cars brought in with manual transmissions, probably due to the lower price point.

I have owned and lost money on about 75 cars some purchased at auction only to discover big expensive repairs on cars that were beautiful under the lights. If I had TV show and TH-cam income, I probably wouldn’t cry over the money I have lost. Good for Hoover to have “outside” income to subsidize his losses so he can play with all those cars. Wish he could have been honest on his TV show to warn the novices that this isn’t a play for typical investors unless they can afford the losses.

Glad they pushed him to explain how he went from used car dealer, to "burger flipper" to being a partner in a chain of restaurants. He really wanted to skip past that and downplay the fact that his family supported him all along. The reality is that his family is wealthy and that's where the money comes from, the successful youtube channel was a happy consequence of that, but he'd still have money without it.

Grey Market. - During the sixties and seventies you could order a new Mercedes Benz right from the factory in Germany - Tax free plates, drive it from the factory to the port and import to your desired country. They weren't overly worried about the home dealers. In my country you could actually order the car direct from the factory at a Mercedes Dealership and still keep the warranty. You only had to go to Germany and do all the shipping yourself - as well as import papers. You could save up to 30% on taxes - depending on the situation.
I bought my 99 Miata for 2k in 2019, sold it for a little more in 2021, and got to have a lot of fun for 2 years. Def the answer. JDM went crazy because they're the 60s muscle car for millennials. Miata isn't expensive because a lot of them were sold and the best version was the USDM one.

The collab i didnt know i needed
Thanks!
"Outside income"= Dad and Gandma
The funny thing is these fellas have no idea how big Freddies is in the Midwest. Lol Freddies is not just a small local franchise... Tyler is doing pretty ok. lol
Other Car TH-camrs I’d love to see would be TJ Hunt, Adam LZ, any one from Donut Media, Big Time, Hert, Cleteus McFarland….and honestly, there’s a lot more 😂
We’ll have a few more lined up!
@@TheIcedCoffeeHourI think Ed Bolian from vinwiki would be a great guest as well.
Rip donut media
Tj hunts in California so logistically I think we have the most hope of seeing one with him! A cleetus podcast would be legendary but he’s so busy with racing, the freedom factory and now his growing family. Same with Adam Lz, his schedule stays jam packed.
@@TheIcedCoffeeHourgotta get jason cammisa!
I have been waiting for this for so long and I have commented about having hoovie on here multiple times, thanks graham.
Another car TH-camr you should have on should be salomondrin and then Parker from, vehicle virgins
Best podcast on the internet
Glad they pushed him to explain how he went from used car dealer, to "burger flipper" to being a partner in a chain of restaurants. He really wanted to skip past that and downplay the fact that his family supported him all along.
The reality is that his family is wealthy and that's where the money comes from, the successful youtube channel was a happy consequence of that, but he'd still have money without it.
Hoovie great idea for new website...a long the lines of bring a trailer....."dig a hole" car reviews
Phenomenal interview.
it's really fascinating how soft spoken Tyler is compared to how he is on his channel
or maybe he was just that tired when this was filmed?
Cool interview ❤
What the hell? I would NEVER expect Hoovie!
Hope you enjoy!
@@TheIcedCoffeeHour Absolutely!
Car prices started tanking Jan 24
I sell cars and EVERYONE who did traditional car financing from 2022-2024 is 10-30k buried. Everything depreciated in one year what it would in 2-3 years
Grey Market.
It's the noise! The feel! The engines are different but now it's all the same
I bought my 99 Miata for 2k in 2019, sold it for a little more in 2021, and got to have a lot of fun for 2 years. Def the answer.
JDM went crazy because they're the 60s muscle car for millennials. Miata isn't expensive because a lot of them were sold and the best version was the USDM one.
Great incite into someone I've followed for years 👍
24:06 to skip the ad 😊
Good show with Hoovie
Hoovie's Garage is a Godsend insofar as useful automotive advice, both technically and financially. However, you need to take that advice and turn it 180 degrees, to make is productive.
Nothing wrong with "Daddys Money" but it isn't cool that he tries to gloss over it and only expands on it when probed.
58:08 The future of cars. 1. Electric with better longer battery tech 2. Synthetic Fuels that give you 2000 miles of range before a refresh 3. Drone Car technology where you fly not drive.
What did Hoove say in this that you all had to wait on 😂
Graham, What watch you wearing?
Hoovies garage just seems like the same formula over and over again you know he's making money with the TH-cam channel but divorce probably kicked his ass but that's what happens when you marry one of those type of women
This video was filmed like 9-10 months ago 😂
Best advice from Hoovie is to never take his advice on car buying! 😂😂😂
I’ve got a Corniche II that my father bought new in 88. Only 14k miles so I’d never sell. One recently sold via auction on Haggerty for 50k though.
Wish they would’ve posted this sooner! Still a good video though
I was always broke as a kid so I never got into cars but I wish I did.
You’ll fit in perfect cause car guys are just broke forever
Miata is always the answer, love thats the response for the bang for buck car. They are fantastic sports cars, smile per mile is unprecedented
Clearly filmed a while ago. He now has the farm and the divorce is well know.
the range rover sport ad is just pure irony here lol
Future hooptie!
