This is more of a statement of individual expression rather than fashion. This was almost 30 years ago, and yet the ignorance and lack of recognition toward individuality has existed since before then and continues today. It's absolutely OK to be yourself and express yourself the way you want, as long as it's legal and you are not hurting anyone or yourself. If you agree or like this message, please share this video on your social media pages. Kids show your parents. Parents show your kids. We are all unique. We are all different. Yet we are all the same. We are all individual humans. We are all part of the human race. We all want acceptance of ourselves and our individual expression. To love each and other for who we are is what makes us human. Hatred is arrogance and ignorance, combined. And that, my friends, cripples the world, whether in masses or one individual at a time. So, please share this as a testament to your unique individuality and the quest for your acceptance of and to all!

This is a documentary about fashion that I did in high school. I entered it into Diablo Valley College's Door Stop Awards contest for video production and took first place for "Best High School Documentary". - บันเทิง
I am the girl stephanie marshall :) what a trip, found it sad we all commented on so much abuse we took for it. I was still on the swim team at that point. lol kind of a jock but not.
You looked amazing!! So sad you guys got so much shit though. It's still the same everywhere even now. I have a mohawk and when I walk down the street, you'd swear nobody ever saw one in their life! :P

Aishling O'Neill Its more mainstream then it was then, but you still have those that dont get it. I still have a bit of color in my hair, Im still that individual, just grown up. Im glad I was that way, Im glad we were all not afraid to be who we wanted, that group shown, we were the only group like that in the school. in a small town like Antioch was back then, it was rough. But you dont change for anyone, being an individual is being a leader. Show your colors :) always. Love yourself, and dont hate on those who dont get who you are, there is already enough hate in the world. xx
***** lol Antioch was small then, in comparison to now, or even shortly after it exploded. I wish I had expressed what I meant when I said that. I was going to clubs in San Fran when I was 15 lol (oh geesh if my Mom knew lol ) but outside of Antioch there was a society just like that group there, so much to see and do. I say that now to anyone who lives anywhere, get out and explore! Although I would still tell anyone to get out of Antioch lol :P
Yes. My grandparents moved to Antioch from Spain (via Hawaii and SF) around 1920 or so. My father was born there in 1924. I think there were only a few thousand people then. When I grew up, the population increased from around 10k to 15k (if memory serves). My senior year, 1969-70, was the first year when black people went to AHS. In those times, African-Americans lived in Pittsburg, none in Antioch. We made sure our own kids grew up in a more diverse environment (in our case, Berkeley). I know Antioch has changed over the years, and your point is well-taken: wherever you grow up, get out and explore. Even if you ultimately return, you'll appreciate your home more.

This is seriously inaccurate.
I certainly didn't feel thick-skinned. We all talked tough, but there was a reason why so many 80s songs are about alienation and not feeling understood and being lonely for not fitting in. The Smiths entire catalog was basically cheap psychotherapy for a lot of us nerds, fags, sluts, weirdos, and dweebs out there.

Love this! I started high school in 1984, in Modesto, CA. Can SOOOO relate to this! I was into thrifting, had purple hair, and was totally into ska! LOL great time capsule! Can so relate to this quote: "Get out of this town and do something else besides just cruising around in your cars all the time."

In the 80s, people could wear a great number of styles and fashions, punk, part 1950s, prep, or create your own. This is Antioch high 84-85. Many people wore what they wanted and people didn't care.

There were more mullets towards the late 80s
This was the spikey/fringed/pink hair period and this school was probably not in 'Metal' territory. Closer to the beach or in the city everyone was more 'mod' rather than 'metal' so there were more goth, new romantic, and mod styles than Dio shirts and mullets.

I see all these same styles on the Teens and 20-somethings going to the clubs around here all the time. I even let one try on a vintage Permit shirt I have that they desperately wanted to borrow. It's falling apart so I declined. :P

This is fantastic! I could have watched this for along time if it was longer. I was intrigued and inspired by the testimonies of these kids.. And the music breaks in between interviews with quick cuts of the school was brilliant. Not to mention that tree costume change closing! YES!

yeah, I like that look too; but we called them Goth Chicks--into Bauhaus, Siosxie and the Banshees, etc. Most were pretty smart too.

This was really well done. I was in journalism school when you made this and I remember what it was like pulling together pieces like this before the days of digital editing. Also, I graduated from high school in 2003, so it has good nostalgia value.

Early new wave music had similarities to punk in the 1970s, however, by the time Duran Duran rose to prominence in the early '80s it was more akin to disco and electronic music,i.e, synth-pop.
He is a cute kid. I doubt he knew what 'ska' was. It was just a cool thing to say that made him sound sophisticated. 1984 everything was compared to Duran Duran because they were bigger than Michael Jackson that year. The Arena Tour was just CRAZY!
I was that age then. I honestly can't remember hearing the word Ska until the 90s. Sometime around when 'No Doubt' became popular.

Young people sadly have no personal style today. Instead of looking unique, they choose to conform and look just as bland as everyone else around them. They have no style, no personality and no social skills. I thank God I was young in the 80's when being an individual was encouraged over conformity.

1984 fashion? Bull. I was a teen then, fashion for guys consisted of a worn out AC/DC or Led Zeppelin shirt, faded and ripped jeans and either a leather jacket or denim jacket.
Adolph Zuckerjew This was a video project. I, too, dressed like you. These kids didn't. At the time, I thought they were fashion statements. Today I believe it was a self expression of individuality.
It depended what group you were a part of on how you dressed
If you were a "rocker".
It depended on who you hung out with and region of the country. Someone in NY dressed differently than someone in LA, Chicago, Dallas or Salt Lake City. The 80's weren't as style bland and homogeneous as today.

I thought the 70s were insane, the 80s make the 70s look like the pinnacle of reason. What a fun period to have lived in, now get a haircut and get a real job, why won’t you be just like your big brother Bob. I imagine Cyndi Lauper, the Sex Pistols, Clash, etc. have a lot to answer for.

Actually, these kids were the exception in most High Schools. Just like the hippies in the 60s were the exception, unless you lived in places like San Francisco.

People go on about how today sucks, but for the most part you can do your own thing in the 21st Century and not get any shit. Back then it took some nads to step out and be different. I remember a guy in my HS in 86, in NH. Obviously gay and he let it fly, tall , a little stocky spiky hair, this kid was not hiding anything without saying it. . I’m sure many classmates came out years later but this guy, who would leave the class and walk into another class to get in the hallway, you’d hear the cat calls .....I didn’t go along with it, I actually admired him for not only being himself, but having bigger balls than the so called jocks. I hope is doing well today .

BOBMAN1980 I am sorry to see that judging people on their appearance is still going strong. I say this because of your comment that you see trick pullers and dopeheads. That is gravely ignorant. My friends and I did not conform to societal expectations in the 80's. Yet the majority of us are successful, happy and professional people who ended up waaaay better off than the jocks and popular kids. I, for one just graduated in the top 5% of my university and have a successful business. I know this is all anecdotal, but please think before you judge someone.
