I kinda cried a bit watching this. In 1984 I was 14 and I used to work at McDonalds from 1983-1987. I actually really liked working there! I made my way into making $5.75 an hour (not bad back then!). I even remember the manager making a real good living too; I want to say about $45,000 a year. Back then that was a lot! I had to go to high school and the company respected when I could and couldn't work! Imagine that! This was my favorite high school job! Thank you Vampire Robot for putting this on YT!

      Hi Stephanie,
I was also thinking about how genuine people were in those days and I miss them. I’m in my mid 40s but I am old enough to remember those days and wish that we could see some of that same kind of human spirit these days. A lot of those young workers there are now at retirement age which is hard to imagine. Time is so precious and yet so fleeting makes you think about the bigger picture or at least it does for me!

I was a young kid during this era. This is when having a birthday party at McDonalds was every kids dream. A Happy Meal was a big deal. It was actually something to look forward to. I enjoy aspects of technology but I do miss how people interacted before the smart phone era. I got to experience childhood in the 80s and teens in the 90s. I miss those days.

I worked at McDonalds in 1984. The ice cream mix came in a big bag with a tube and was easy to put in and take out. Every evening you took the machine apart and sanitized it then the morning shift is supposed to assemble it . And THAT'S where the problem started . Poorly managed crews would put it off during breakfast , get busy and never assemble it or maybe didn't know how. We used to call out sundaes by "male" or "female" , with or without nuts. Pretty sure that wouldn't go over today , ha ha

That's because McDonald's wasn't all over the place like it's Today... Back in the 1970s the Ice Cream makers were always working because it was Real Ice Cream.... Than the 1980s was when McDonald's and Burger King went to War and the Vendors supplying these machines couldn't keep up.. at that time the average radius of a McDonald's was 30 miles... Grand population Radius.... Today the grand population Radius is 3.07 miles.... It was easier to get a Polish sausage in Chicago than a Big Mac in the 1970s. But the expanse of fast food was Soo great... That the Ice Cream makers today is more Artificial... Than Real Ice Cream. If you notice the majority of the employees are young.... The Manager was mostly the only one above 25 years.... Nowadays the Employees are Upto Elderly.... That's a result of sending jobs overseas to take advantage of the cheap Labor.... The American people are mostly Service Sector and the really good paying jobs disappeared overseas. Back then you could work 4 days and pay the Rent... Car... Food.. utilities... And go to the ballgame.... Today you work 48 hours and never get above water.... Lower wages and less benefits.
That's what happened in the last 40 years.... Corporations stripped themselves of the Highly Qualified and Skilled American worker.... To a Highly Qualified and Skilled foreign worker... Nostalgia is such a cheap emotion that clouds critical thinking.
I'm not saying I don't fall into the trap, but but it is easy to take a past situation where you have fully made it through to the other side, and conclude that since all the variables in play have played out, and since it's familiar territory now, it must have been some less complicated, wholesome time, in the same way people are susceptible to thinking that history wasn't complicated, messy, or nuanced for the people living through it at the time.

Look at the quality of the food on the plate, look at how people are interacting and not looking at their phones. Most dine-in customers use the kiosks or the app. Very little interaction. For dine-in, they offer table service, which is nice and somewhat surprising. I was at a Micky Ds recently and it was pretty sad. Most people were ordering from the self help menus. They had tons of orders coming in from what must have been from their app and delivery services like Uber Eats. The one guy that was waiting at the register was ignored even though he said excuse me several times and eventually left. They could just not handle the amount of orders. They weren't even slacking off they were all working as fast as they could. Technology can be a blessing but it can also really take away from the human experience. Eventually they really will need robots to work at the fast pace that's being demanded from the workers. People don't want to experience anything anymore they just want convenience.
I really miss these days. I was a kid in the 80s/90s and I remember you'd wait at the register for them to go get your food. Things still hadn't gotten messed up yet. I was just mentioning that.
I could get a quarter pounder with cheese value meal in 1994 when I was in my teens (I graduated 1995) for $3.14 and that includes the tax.
The fries definitely are not as fresh or as thick as they used to be. The burgers don't taste as good. The Big Mac has shrunk in size and become mostly bread with super thin beef patties.
With a family of four, you're spending over 40 dollars for ONE fast food meal. It's no wonder that people are struggling when food costs so much and everything else keeps going up, yet salaries have barely nudged, comparatively speaking.

I started working at McD's in August of 1986 when I was 17. This were the exact same uniform that I wore for the first couple months until we got new ones that were uncomfortable, stained easily, and wore out really fast. I was in responsible for prepping the counter and drive-thru and my shift was 5am-1:30pm. Those Styrofoam containers were so bulky and the cups were the bane of my employment. LOL I had to bring them up from the basement and it was insane to get everything stocked, coffees brewed, iced tea brewed and poured into the huge dispenser, and then once the store opened at 6am I worked drive-thru taking orders until 9am. I got my breakfast until 9:30 and then it was time to disassemble both shake and sundae machines, clean them, sanitize all the parts reassemble both machines and have them up and running by the time we hit the switch over from breakfast to lunch at 10:30! It was so fast paced that we never had time to hang around and chit chat, but it was fun because we were a team who had respect for each other and our customers.
Those prices tho...insane to think we thought a Big Mac was expensive back then! I remember one year it was the anniversary of the Big Mac and we sold them for 99 cents for a week! It was crazy! We had businesses ordering 50+ Macs with fries and people ordering 10-20 for their co-workers. Those days are long gone!
