How a population of 300,000 can produce such a variety of incredible musicians will always puzzle me. Love it.
Its in their blood
They have elven blood :)
they have much inspiration from their beautiful nature i think
....in those long dark winter nights there is nothing to do besides drinking, having sex or making genious music! :D
haha true!!
I was on that concert in Poznań, Poland he was talking about, this was the first time he played the song. He told us he didn't have more songs to play, so he will try to improvise something, and he began playing this beautiful track, which later got called "Poland". This is a very happy memory for me, thank you Olafur.
And it's my favourite song if his, too!!! Thanks, Poland
just so beautiful
that's a sweet story but all i can think about is an artist at a concert going halfway through 'ah damn i ran out'
WHAT? He improvised that? That speaks volumes to the actual level of talent Olafur has, so much creativity yet fluidity and emotion - that he created on the spot.
For those of you who would like to know, the string musicians' names are Viktor Orri Árnason on violin and Paul Grennan on cello :)
Thank you
Cheers man!
Thank you. Ólafur said their names but it's great to see them in print, properly credited in terms of TH-cam.
This Guy must have amazing personality. The way he interact with people, I'm under impression that there is nothing artificial in him. I saw his performance live in Poland, and I would recommend it to anyone. There is something absolutely mystical, beautiful and soul touching in his music. He may have be one of the most talented composers of our time.
if you like the this you will also like Joep Beving
I just had to ask, but did he play Poland?
wielokrotnie
What happens when you bring your whole presence to a work of art. People feel it. So beautiful, in any medium
I am truly in love with men like him. It's very refreshing to see people with genuine creativity meticulously crafted in such a sensitive, but striking way. Very admirable, as well as the gentleman playing the strings, who truly made it spectacular.
Roli jesse Garcia calmate Roli!
It's cold and raining outside but I'm sat in my bed all cozy and warm with the curtains open, a cup of tea and my puppy curled up next to me. Nothing is more perfect than listening to Oli on a rainy day.
"Sorry!... I just made fun of all of you!"
What a treasure this man is. Such a beautiful and charming performance. Nearly eight years ago, now. Time is so strange.
A great example of how music in its simplest form is often the best.
Very well said, simple sounds can make the most amazing melodies.
I'm glad I decided to watch this before going to bed. :)
Never heard of him before now. What a nice guy. So down to earth. Great music, too.
so good you heared about Olafur.
same here (:
That first song is such an emotional piece for me. I always see myself standing in the snow, looking over an empty landscape, freezing and feeling sad because the woman i love has left me years ago. And i'm waiting for the moment she returns, walks up to me without saying a word and hugs me forever. To me, this music is what love with all the happiness and pain that comes with it feels like.
bro .. be happy .. I hope you moved on and found another
This is what happens when a nation, as a whole, values the arts.
And despises rip off bankers..... Good on them, I'm moving there!
True most of the artist that i follow play out of the US and if they do play here it's in New York, L.A. Chicago etc.. and the dates are limited. I went to a Chick Corea concert here in the states a few years back and the theater was only 1/3 full Chick even made a comment about it and said he gets hired more in South America, Europe and Asia then he does in the US. John Mclaughlin (Jazz Guitar dude not the pop singer) says the same thing. Sad but true.
Like the beginning of the song at 14:40 that bites Sufjan's John Wayne Gacy Jr. so hard the entire upper midwest felt it?
@JP Williams. You cannot even imagine how right you are. This happens when a nation as a whole can value arts and develop itself freely without the need to endanger itself. Living without oppression of the monsters from Brussels and with no need to harbor dangerous species from the Third World who are coming to the country in order to destroy it from in within.
There is also another fact to take in consideration : We like exotism. I'm from France but I'm more likely to go to a Jazz concert with foreign musicians even if we have great talents here. But I agree with the fact that the US is not the best country when it comes to art valorisation.
I am from Poland and must say that I am so happy that Olafur could not sleep that night. Beautiful song :)
You must have something to do with the bad roads then... Bóg, Honor i Ojczyzna!!!
I can't never explain what this music makes me feels like, simply beautiful! words can't describe!
4:34 - Þú ert jörðin
9:13 - Tomorrow's Song
14:02 - Poland
17:27 - Gleypa okkur
24:01 - Near Light
30:19 - Ljósið

@@jesusfigueroa687 easy, Aphex Twin...
I definitely loved the last track.❤
This is where the real music is. I have been listening to him for so long and now he is on this channel where I have found so many amazing artists!
This man and his accompanying musicians blow my mind. I love how his hands are shaking, and he is cracking jokes. yet the music is so so sensitive and beautiful. So amazing.
I saw him in Cologne this year. I just thought my heart will explode, because I felt so much love, I didn't even knew what to do with all these emotions. It was beyond description.
And. I fell in love with his smile. And his eyes. And his accent. And did I mention smile? ;)
He must be so inspired by the beautiful Icelandic bathtubs...
You must be the ethereal phenomenal maker of pieces me external. The patients
god I've watched this a hundred times and this never gets old. a true performer, brilliant.
He's just ridiculously AMAZING. He, his music and everything he touches are beautiful genius.
Ólafur if you read this - many thanks for Poland song!!! I'm from Poland and I can say it is one of the most beautiful songs connected(composed) to my country I have ever heard. :)
Olafur Arnalds is seriously one of my favourite people in the world. He's so freakin' awesome.
How can anyone NOT like Ljosid :<
Olafur Arnald's music always make me so calm~
Wow, this is beautiful. He must be so inspired by the Icelandic nature!
The song around 6:00 has such a melancholic feel to it. I get a vision of a gazebo near a lake with dying swans on frosted grounds, and a red rose on an old wooden chair. Incredible, what strange thoughts Arnalds' music can bring.
Olafur's music breaks my heart - everytime....wish I could see him live
I hope you will, it's 1000x more amazing than videos, and those videos are already super amazing
I just had an argument with my mum. Im terrible at comforting people even if i love them so much. So, i put this live performance to comfort her. I guess this is the best way for me to express my feelings.
This music is shelter. Always warms me up when needed.
I really needed tonight
Its been 10 years this performance was published and I still listen to it often... never felt enough of it. Just touches the heart everytime! Love for KEXP and Love for Olafur Arnalds from India.
For those of you who dont know, Olafur is also in an electronic group called Kiasmos. They have a great KEXP performance as well from Iceland Airwaves 2014. For those of you open to that genre of music, look it up! Been listening to it flat out
How could i miss that !! YES YES YES ! Thank you mate !
Dylan Thomas thanks, will check them out!
I've been listening to Kiasmos for a couple of years....listened to Olafur for a couple of years... never would've thought. Now I feel stupid, yet enlightened :) Thanks
How good is he?! He is so multi-talented. Him, Nils Frahm and Lionel Towers. Lionel Towers is a platinum selling pop music producer who started out as a classical pianist, he was considered a child prodigy - th-cam.com/video/8TPToBvAXm8/w-d-xo.html I wish I was as talented as these guys :(!
Wow thanks for the heads up on this! I had no idea. Just listened to some, not sure if I'd like it before I pressed play... though I do, yes, it's brilliant!
and now is when my heart blows up with so much beauty....I'm very sorry for those who don't appreciate this
The first time i heared of him was on spotify. Back then i was just chilling and listening to a classical playlist. The song: Tomorrow's song came up and i immediatly felt inlove. And seeing him now his preformance makes me wanna discover more about this excellent artist. He is almost as good as Ludovico Einaudi, so great job!
Yes,I love both of them!
Now I have to look up this Ludovico guy.. XD
+Banafshe♥ Ludovico just way better. Not even comparable
don‘t compare.
i know iam not the only one whose tears ran through their cheeks while listening to this
I love the audience interaction. Great way to start the set.
I saw him with 'A Winged Victory for the Sullen' and his good friend and great pianist Nils Frahm. That concert will have the most special spot in my heart for ever. Those feelings I felt that night were extremely deep, I had no control of myself those hours. When it was over, I couldn't speak for like a half an hour because I had to place those feelings. Thank you Olafur, and also the other 2. Thank you for everything. You can't possibly imagine what your music means to us, to all of us.
Thanks for this beautifull moments of reflection and peacefull grace :))))
'Neqr Light' blew me away as soon as the string kicked off. This song is a mix of pure joy, sdadness, love and loss. It made me cry a greta deal of all the great friendships I have let go. I think Olafur hits a deepo spot, deep in m y heartt and soul, he has thwe keys to my longng, god bless you guys!
habe sie erst heute entdeckt und bin begeistert über ihre Art Musik zu machen.....so minimalistisch und für mich perfekt!!
icelandic music often feels like it came from another planet, i cant describe it really
When I hear music like this, my heart tightens and I don't know what to feel. Music like this is truly hard to come by because it has so much soul, so much history to tell. I am unable to express my true feelings about this beautiful music in words.
Christina, I have a hard time associating feelings with music in the same way most people do. I hear people talk about music saying things like "this song makes me feel happy" or "this music feels so sad" and I just don't get those reactions. The best way I can explain what music does for me is that it recharges my soul like a battery. Sitting here listening to this performance with my eyes closed I don't feel happy, anxious, melancholic, or any other specific feeling. This music simply fills my soul.
This is EXACTLY how I feel. I couldn’t put it into words. So strange how you feel your heart tightening too. I wonder why
i was fortunate enough to see Olafur at the RNCM in manchester this week... truly beautiful music, matched only by the charm of the performer. an unforgettable experience.
Literally the most positive TH-cam comments section in history.
Wizard Guy I was looking for trolling comments and just failed hahaha
A thread I never thought I'd ever come across.
Can't say anything bad about him. He's too...precious:)
This music is the better answer against violence!
There, positive lost. Next time, don't jinx it everyone.
Is it possible that there is anyone else on the Earth whose music is so full of peace, openess, and beauty? I am always entranced by what Arnalds does. Such true music.
When I use Olafur music for my performances, people often ask me, who is the author...
Olafur is a true artist.. his music goes in people's heart... and inspires many other artists!
I catch myself coming back to this performance time and again and every time I get a feeling of humbleness and gratitude for this lovely music, what a gem!
it's all about the person, the people, and how the relationship can
open the gateways for everything to melt into the sound
xc
Love you KEXP. Deep diving tonight.. Your collection is a treasure.
i love this guy! so talented and loving what he does... makes me feel so comfortable like home.

i really love how the cello would catch up with the violin and makes a beautiful harmony
Listening to this performance while trimming artichokes is the most calming experience. Thanks Ólafur.
Food for the soul , thank god for music ... Or in this case Thank you Olafur !
Words can't explain the feeling his music brings towards ones emotions, and how goosebumps rise for every curve in a melodic sound. Bravo Olafur, bravo.
Such a great musician, and great sense of humor. Amazing.
This has been the soundtrack of a quick nap this afternoon. Best f*cking nap I have ever had. Love u Ólafur
One of the more beautiful performances I've seen on KEXP
This is one of the best live performances ever. I keep coming back to this at least once a week... Its recharging me so much, and creates a place for my emotions. Music is life, Thank you Olafur.
greatness comes in its most simple ways perfectly done through this art. thanks for sharing KEXP!
The best. Ólafur Arnalds is a beautiful genius. (And I love the cello player
Just discovered this beautiful music. what a great moment in my life. peaceful, beautiful and inspiring. Thank you Mr. Arnalds.
"Near Light" is.. UNBELIEVABLE !!! I can not describe with the right word this song!! Thank you, Olafur !! :-)
Absolutely love Near Light. It moves my heart, my body shivers with appreciation of their skill & freedom of expression. An amasing illustration of understated brilliance!!
What a beautiful human being to be able to allow music like this to come through him. So yielded to the sway of the music and the leading of the universal heart of love
he's adorable!
looking at old photographs, while listening to this.........sigh! makes me melancholy. makes me yearn for the past!
Poland is my favorite song, it gives me life
This music makes me dream... Makes me fly. When listening I was outside my body, outside the earth... And even that, I was breathing, deeply... I realize I was in heaven. I'm alive.
This music is helping me paint in my abstract style. I just started painting weeks ago.

I like hes sweater, so warm and cozy. Yea, and music as well :)
His music is emotion. The textures of how they play the instruments is every bit as awesome as the simplicity of it all. amazing.
I cried because of this
