    Do you retro game with a modern TV or oldschool CRT? Lots of awesome set-ups available for both. Let me know below and let's discuss.

  • @Izquierda
    @Izquierda 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    The picture losing sync for a moment is actually due to the game switching resolutions. Among several other consoles that do this, Saturn games do it a lot, with the title screen and sometimes menu being on 480i 15khz, while FMVs and gameplay are 240p 15khz. There can also be changes across different "240p" resolutions within the same game. CRTs handle these resolution changes like it's nothing, but any flat panel will desync for a variable amount of time. This one seems to regain sync relatively fast compared to others. Nothing to be done about this other than to use an external processor with frame buffering (with added lag as a tradeoff).

      @@hdrgb How severe are the sync issues with SNES and Genesis?

    • @hdrgb
      @hdrgb  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@rosnijack8512 I haven't tried with those. It seems the further back you go the worse it is. For example, the NES RGB modded has trouble with this. I believe what's happening is the sync is more of a 'feature' rather than what retro gamers would deem an 'issue'. After-all these were intended for field and studio use, so they were designed to identify sync and display it differently than most TV's. I wouldn't recommend this monitor for retro gaming, but here and there I'll use it to use some Saturn games.

    Hey Patrick! You did my Gamecube HDMI mod a few years ago, love your work and videos! Do you have a video of the Dreamcast running on that 14" PVM CRT you show in this video? And would it be using scart or VGA? Thanks again!

      Much respect, thank you for putting your trust in hdRGB.
      That's a great idea, I'll have to make a video of it! I could use either format in general, but this TV takes RGB, so that would be it.

    Have you tried this monitor with a GameCube and component cables? Also how are you hooking up the audio connections from your breakout cable?

    • @hdrgb
      @hdrgb  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, the GC component cables aren't worth the price for me personally, especially since we are modding the GC for HDMI. We just released a video for that if you're interested.
      The TV has a 3.5mm audio input, so I use a simple RCA>3.5mm adapter cable and plug it straight in. I sometimes use that same cable to plug into external speakers. Hope that answers your question.

    I think using LM1881 will solve the problem.
    Set CVBS to Csync on LM1881.
    I tried with 9020.
    I tried it on PS1, but I think it works for SS as well.

    Any advice for PVM 9L1 to Ps2? It doesnt have the composite connections but has S, adapter?

    • @hdrgb
      @hdrgb  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't know that monitor, but I'd say, use the best output it has. If it's composite, your probably better off playing older systems. If there's RGB you're golden. If it has s-video at the least, you could grab a pair of those cables for the PS1/PS2/PS3 and it should look far better than standard composite.

    Nice little monitor.
    Just about every european 720p and 1080p LCD TV sold up until now has RGBs in through the SCART connector. Not just professional monitors. 4K models and newer usually don't though as they started phasing SCART out.
    It feels like a lot of people think gaming on their CRT looks better just because it's small. A low resolution picture looks better on a 14" screen than it does on a 50" screen. 240p RGBs to a small LCD looks fantastic.
    Going from CRT to LCD for PC gaming was a huge relief back in the day because of reduced eye strain and improved clarity, not to mention desk space. I think the CRT craze is a bit strange. I have a well calibrated 32" CRT (I have an electronics lab and do my own repair and servicing) and a 42" LCD, both with RGBs. They have almost the exact same 4:3 image size. I'm prefectly happy gaming on the LCD and will probably sell my CRT after I have finished recapping it and had my fill of light gun games for all my consoles. It's a beast

    • @hdrgb
      @hdrgb  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree with lower resolutions being best suited for smaller tv's, that is just perfect marination right there. If it's going to be nuked up on a nice new big modern TV (nicely using RGB of course) then you need to distance yourself from the set accordingly. It;s all about how close or far you're sitting. Gotta keep the nostalgia flowing through our veins!

      "It feels like a lot of people think gaming on their CRT looks better just because it's small."
      My CRT is 20" and taller than my 24" LCD. Retro consoles look like shit on the LCD.
      I'll gladly take your CRT off your hands.

    Hey hdRGB, I'm building a video wall with these and the smaller ones. Is it possible using BlackMagics converter to use HDMI? I think HDMI would be easier for me to push content onto each monitor. BlackMagic has a tiny HDMI to SDI converter. Does that work for this monitor or am I confusing ports?

    That's a cool monitor. How good are those LCD Broadcast monitors with RGB input? Especially the motion clarity. I would think motion would blur still and have lag?

    • @hdrgb
      @hdrgb  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The picture is fantastic. They are also very good with motion blur, so there is very little lag , but I have not run a lag test or anything like that. The only down-side thus far is that there are constant changes in sync when going from menu to game, so sometimes the picture cuts out as a feature of the TV to identify those changes. I wouldn't game on this consistently, but it's fun as a small secondary monitor.

  • @jongeo
    @jongeo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    The monitor loses sync because the menu is in 240p and the FMVs are 480i. Digital interfaces can't process that sync change as fast as a CRT can.

    • @hdrgb
      @hdrgb  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This is a key comment. At the time of recording this, I had no idea. Now it's abundantly clear as to what's happening to the picture. Playing the Saturn on here is simply hilarious and not recommended, but the picture itself looks solid when displayed.

    • @hdrgb

      Sure, with any of the inputs in the back, but you'd likely have to downscale hdmi to an analog connection and i'm not quite sure if you'd want to do that.

    that looks like dogshit compared to a crt, sorry man. i would still love one as novelty. if you don't have a bright crt your tube is prob dying or something bro. the "sync" issues are the internal scaler of the LCD adjusting from 240p/480i. Crts don't have a native res and dont need scalers so thats why you dont see that on the crt.

      @c0rpse1 Easy there. If you're playing on a CRT, you're better off to use good 240p classic content. This LCD is intended for PS2/XBOX/GC component-era consoles. The Saturn is just a funny system because it changes resolution so often and the monitor picks it all up making it almost unplayable at times. I'm happy to have been able to show that in this vid.
