When it comes to the Toyota AE86, half of it's praise is memetastically joking about it ironically and all the Taco Meme Eight-UH SIX-UH content it brings. But there are also plenty who actually think the car turns you into an instant Drift God, and nothing else will ever come close.

It was not supposed to be a hardcore drivers car, but it was more of a sports car that you could use as a daily drive......go long distances and still do some track work. It was more of a balanced all rounder. The reason the A80 was so famous was mainly because of its engine and it's brakes which was one of the best of its time.

I would say it’s a better car than the GT AMG
The SLS was literally the project for a new Viper. The chassis still has the space for the transmission in the front, while the SLS has a transaxle layout.

it's just a lot more classy and timeless. I don't think it's better though. The GT is hellishly quick on the racetrack. I don't really know the street versions in detail, but the GT GT3 was a massive step above the SLS GT3
I think the problem with rotaries is that they were always a novelty and therefore there wasn't enough research put into fixing it's issues

I personally like the AE86 for its aesthetic, I like the clean pop up headlight and the hatchback form factor, I really like that styling, I don't even care if it's slow or whatever, as long as it's fun to drive, I want it.
Speaking of the styling, I also prefer the rx7 FC over FD because of its styling, it's just, so clean

Lots of people don’t know this but the AE86 practically invented the sport of drifting which inspired initial d. That’s why the drift king is a producer of the show. Initial D definitely popularized the show, although it was the film pluspy by Keiichi Tsuchiya (Drift King) that influenced Drifting to the media. (There would be no fast and furious or nfs if it didn’t exist) Basically the AE86 is popular mainly because of Initial d, although what it did is why many people regard it as a legendary car. Even if it’s just a 128hp Toyota Corolla.

The one about rotaries goes two ways. Rotary guys love them and act like they're the second coming, while V8 guys talk as if just glancing at a 13B will cause it to spit out the apex seals and break apart. Fact is, the rotary engine runs differently to a piston engine, and needs different maintenance. It's not gonna be as reliable as a B16B or make as much power as a built LS1, but at the same token, it is a perfectly usable engine that is lightweight, rev happy, and smooth as butter.

@@ashtonpadilla5269 It needs a way better Cooling system (these engine run in way too hot temperatures) and an improved design for preventing the massive oil burning. As Bladed said, imagine what the Rotaries would be nowadays if given the same time for development that the Cylinder Engines got...

@@MiguelMedV I don't know much about the behavior of rotary's, to be perfectly honest. I imagine methanol would solve the overheating issue. I think Rob dahm or whoever is using a fancy gasket (fancy apex seals) that dont wear or break so quickly. I'm not sure if that helps keep the mixture clean tho.
I'd like to note that an rx7 done right is still as reliable as when it left the factory. I mean look at Aaron's from Hyperdrive.

well generaly if you care for it. Red line it from time to time(it litterly says in the manual to push it to red line from time to time) its going to work fine.

Mazda RX7 FD is a car i would like to drive, but not own.
Bladed is right. It's plagued by reliability issues and is literally a time bomb.
You got to think that the rebuild of rotary is kinda the same as a timing belt service in a piston engine, mine as already 5 years in my hands and 30.000km and no problem at all just regular service, but like you say it's a timing bomb waiting on it to blow... Ahaha
But when you drive it you forget everything else.. I m very happy with the car

Depending in which country do you live, LS engines have rich aftermarket supports, easy to get, and are dirty cheap. But not all countries have easily-available LS engines.

I always thought Clarkson liked modern lambo v12s at least on top gear he did. When it was new, he rated the Murcielago as his favorite lambo of all time, and when the aventador came out he was the one saying it’s a good car while Hammond and May didn’t really care for it. I got to know about ae86 thanks to Initial D and underground 2(my starter car). Just an anime and just a game but still it makes me smile and feel positive emotions when I see it. This alone is enough for me to love this car.

The AE86 was my favorite Toyota when I got one for free in Forza Motorsport 4.
It just handled so much better that most of the other cars in its class.
Then I discovered The Drift Bible and DK having one. I was fascinated by the 80's drift scene.

Your daily 80' corolla don't go to 8k rpm.dohc + you're wrong about something, no it was a very good drift car when it's released. You forget something. This car is from the 80. The cars in initial d are from late 90. Ofc rx7, s14 and stuff drift better thanks to the horsepower. Still doesn't mean it was a bad car and your regular grocery getter corolla. (also your USA market one is like 10 horsepower less so yeah, it does impact performance alot)
Yes this car isn't that fast. I mean you can throw any 90 to nowadays car against it, in straight the car will lose. There is no argue about that. Thing is, this car isn't fast. It's fun. Once you understand that, you understand why it's so popular in Japan.

I mean, most if the cars are from the early 90’s and the AE86 is from the late 80’s. It’s fairly balanced. The AE86 wasn’t a very good car. Tune-able, yes, but good and reliable? Not so much. It didn’t even sell well.
