  • Drafting is one of my favorite ways to replay Fire Emblem games, it is a great way to mix up your playthrough, and change how you think about how different units perform. I discuss why I like drafting so much, and how to do a draft.

Drafting always looks like so much fun but barely any of my friends play fire emblem so its impossible to convince them to play

I just watched the first episode of a let’s play by a channel called jonnoabboFE, (I think), and they did a solo draft by assigning point values to each character in FE7, and giving themselves a maximum point total to build a team with. I thought it was pretty cool, and I think I’ll try it next time I play.

If you don't mind organizing something online, I'd be up for a 3H draft. I don't have enough experience with other FE games to do a meaningful draft with those.

I'd be in for a 3H draft too. If only cuz I always enjoy 3H self imposed challenge runs.

@@l.n.3372 Alright, let's see if we can get at least one more. Two would be best, to not have the same number of players as houses. (Maybe we can make a "don't draft two units from the same house in a row" rule, to make the roster different from a no-other-class recruitment run)

If doing a 3H run, a lot of information needs to be decided upfront:
Are we all playing the same route or not?
Are we allowing out of house recruitable units or not?
Are we allowing church units or not?
Are both Byleth + Lord free for everyone to use or not?
New game or new game +
Normal vs hard (no maddening plz lol)
Some things can vary. I always play hard mode 3H unless I'm going for a maddening run. But some might prefer normal mode.

Some friends and I have done a couple ironman drafts, where the primary rule is that we can't reset the game for any reason. I'm the kind of player who would typically reset for deaths, but in a Sacred Stones draft I lost Natasha pretty early and had to go without a staff unit until Knoll, who had been my last draft pick for this exact possible scenario. It was a great fun way to play a familiar game in a new way.

Drafting is super fun. Highly recommended as a way to spice up the game. One time I drafted FE8, and then after I was finished I ran it back by playing FE8 randomizer using those same drafted units. I even still have my Google Doc playthrough log I made so I can look back at it. Eirika was a Cav so she ended up putting in the work, and Vanessa who carried my normal run ended up as an Archer and was substantially less useful. I also ended up with like four wyverns somehow soooooo it wasn't the hardest ruleset ever, haha.
    Have fun with it!

I'd also like to add that in a non competitive draft, it's okay to let each player individually select their own difficulty
Heck even in competitive drafts I've seen people play on a higher difficulty than the rest of the group just to flex or something

My favourite moment in a draft was a Shadow Dragon Ironman draft where I had the last round pick, and people thought I was just memeing when I picked Radd, but I legit picked him for a reason.
I picked him 'cause he was the only potential warper left (Everyone else was a Male Class Set 2 unit, so you'd have to promote them first), and it turned out I needed all the warpers I drafted in the final map, so even though it took until chapter 20 for Radd to hit Warp, it was worth it and worked out.
Also, first picking Fiona in my first ever draft was hilarious and that draft was legit really funny.
Also, Awakening drafting with Spotpass and non-main maps not counting to Turn Count led to the other funniest pick where I drafted Mist because she's a staffer, and has the weakest Spotpass battle, so she got easy early game EXP for my team, as well as an early extra unit for Chapter 4 (Which was nice 'cause it let me 2 turn the map).

This brings me back. I only ever did one draft race while I was hanging around on the Fire Emblem Amino community and it was a lot of fun.
We did it for Fates Conquest Hard mode and while we did use the snake order, we also had the units listed in separate categories (based on their usefulness) and we couldn’t pick from a higher tier until the lower tiers were all drafted.
The result of this was me getting royally screwed… literally because I got zero royal characters beyond Corrin and Azura, who were naturally free. I ended up embracing this and drafted Odin so I could make Corrin a powerful magic user and If memory serves I also drafted Beruka and Arthur so to be the brutes of the army. Hilariously, Hero Beruka with sword and axe breaker was almost as devastating as my magic Corrin.
My team worked surprisingly well and I did a ton of fun things I didn’t consider doing when I had access to everyone. Most notably, I attempted a quick blitzkrieg against Hinoka in chapter 24 using only dark flier Corrin with bow breaker… and it actually worked. It really shouldn’t have in retrospect, I got stupid lucky when fighting the Kinshi Knights, but pulling that off was amazing.
The only downside to the race was that one of them (or two?) weren’t able to get past chapter 10 with their picks, so they didn’t finish. A bit of a shame, but it was still loads of fun just talking back and forth about the game, our teams, and eventually branching into broader FE subjects as we continued.
    Good times.

Drafting is a lot of fun. It really lets units you would rarely think about shine above their potentially better peers. In a normal run of fe8, you won’t really care about Kyle or Marisa, even if they are having an above average game. But in a draft those same units can become blessed and carry you the mid or late game like a Seth or Joshua might normally.
I really want to try another draft of the later games that allow for heavy class changing. I did one of Three Houses and watched as Ashe became my early healer since the other magically inclined characters were picked by other players. And there were quite a few funny yet powerful builds like sniper Hanneman becoming one of my hardest hitting units that run.
But the last and arguably most important part of drafts are the stories you remember. Like most ironman runs, you’ll recall crazy events happening like someone getting 4

I've never done a draft, however i have done several runs of Sacred Stones and Echoes where i put all playable characters on a wheel and spin, usually i just do it the average deployment slots allowed, but for echoes i limit it to 9 for each army

Another fun draft idea for 3H that I've watched before is two player House based drafts, where you only play with two players and split the house units to make two teams.
For example, if you both chose to play VW, you'd split the Golden Deer. But perhaps you decide to ban warping outright so nobody can pick Lysithea. Then you draft the rest of the house.
What was interesting about this format was that Byleth and the route respective Lord were not allowed to be on the same team. So, if you drafted Byleth, the other player would draft Claude/Dimitri/Edelgard. That way each player gets at least one OP unit guaranteed. Otherwise you'd run into a possibility where one player gets, for example, Byleth + Lord while the other player only has Byleth.
The hypothetical teams for VW might be (if warp/Lysithea is banned):
    Byleth, Leonie, Marianne, Raphael
    Vs
    Claude, Hilda, Lorenz, Ignatz
And then you could either draft additional units like church units, or make conditions that ban recruiting from out of house, etc.
So you could end up with:
    Warp banned. Church units allowed.
Byleth, Leonie, Marianne, Raphael, Shamir, Seteth, Flayn
    Vs
Claude, Hilda, Lorenz, Ignatz, Catherine, Cyril, Hanneman

One of the most fun I've had in FE was doing an engage draft. We had some lax rules (undrafted units were free instead of no one getting them, for example) but just being restricted to certain units really threw my efficiency brainrot out the window because even if Alcryst is better than Etie, it don't matter because I got Etie, not Alcryst. So the weaker units can shine because there's no "well this other option is better"

I think Radiant Dawn is actually really interesting for drafting. In most games the first few picks are what really matters and the rest is filler. In RD you constantly have to weigh units in one part of the game against units in another and make sure you don't fall short in any part.

Rd sounds BRUTAL to draft... I feel like Jill or something gotta be 1st just for dawn brigade utility
And is it even possible to beat the prologue without Nolan?

      @hajoeijgenraam295 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@jsterdawg72 Last time Mekkah did a RD draft race there were a couple rules in place. There are always a couple units who are free in certain parts of the game. I believe everyone was free for the first few, not sure how many, chapters. I also believe Haar was restricted in some way as he is too OP. RD requires some more complicated rules but can be very rewarding.

I did a Radiant dawn draft on Normal and to make things easier Jill was free and we banned Har. There were also a lot of units who were free in specific chapters like Lucia in 2-2 and Edward in chapter 1.

Hahaha, I had one friend in highschool that I don't talk to anymore and one friend from highschool who started playing since then but has a kid now and have never encountered anyone else. Also, going back and reading those FAQs from 15 years ago is hilarious. SOOO many bad takes, considering how well ppl understand the games nowadays. A lot of "pierce is pointless, just go falcoknight for the swords" and "Amelia is good in general" in those threads.

I'm doing an Engage draft run with one of my friends, what we did was take turns until we each had 13 units excluding Alear since the maximum deployment amount in the game is 14, anybody leftover would be on the bench and we banned second seals so we wouldn't end up working around the cards we were given and to appreciate what each unit can offer the way they were intended, the funniest part is that we banned Louis of all characters because neither of us touched Panette or Kagetsu before finding out how broken they were, we both ended up with the reasoning that Louis was just too good of a tank but obviously things have changed and we could be wrong today, i see Louis in the mid areas in Maddening tier lists nowadays

I was a dick when I drafted fe5, I planned togo B route, got a solud team for early and mud game, then used my remaining picks to snag Sleuf and Amalda uncontested knowing full wellI was not going to use them, sadly the organizer of that draft turned out to be a huge freep and a total dick so that draft quickly fell apart
