Phones too. Imagine if components between laptops, tablets-foldables, and Fairphone/Shift phone models could be mixed and matched ~ kinda like Project Ara but with parts held in by phillips-head screws.
Don't care about battery life? Trade battery size for a beefier SoC and slap on a 1440p 120hz display (maybe a built-in stylus too?). Want a larger phone? Just grab a large chassis with a folding hinge and 9-inch display and go ham!

We already have standards for nearly everything, but it's not easy to make using them law, as it guarantees whoever comes up with a standard all the profit from licensing. Strangely many standards have free licensing, and greedy companies don't use the standards so they can stack business in their favor, as well as thwart the competition. "Stacking" is against the laws of non competition, and has been for a long time! As a consumer it's hard to fight because of the legal expenses, but competing companies can and sometimes do. Many companies use tricks like using a standard in a non standard way to get around it: HP, does it with their USB cables and other IO's, and accessories for their devices, and so do others, Apple has taken stacking to the extreme with chip ID's so you can't even put anything from one identical device in another! They have been sued and fined millions, maybe in the billions already in parts of Europe and else where, but since they can afford the legal expenses without flinching, they keep doing it, or just find ways around the laws, or make country specific models of devices!

I joined their mailing list for when they're shipping to the EU/UK - not because I need a laptop, but because they need to know we're interested and supportive this side of the pond. I wish them every success and look forward to a v2.0. - my personal vote would be to offer a 'chunky' model. Thin and light is all well and good, and the current notion of what's desirable, but my laptops have been old Thinkpads and MacBook Pros from 10+ years ago and those were plenty thin enough for me. With modern components a slightly chunkier model would have excellent cooling and oceans of room for expansion, upgrades and more connectivity, and could be built like a tank. The latter is really important if you're realistically going to use the same chassis over the years and upgrade the 'innards'.

I've been waiting for this... but maybe it will be a gift as I just upgraded my 2015 laptop... New battery, a second stick of RAM and a SATA m.2... But that's all I can upgrade on it. I bought it to have something while deployed and it survived some blowing dust and 60°C sun. After 7 years, the battery stopped holding its charge and I bought it with a HDD but noticed it had an empty m.2 slot, huge upgrade there! And also, luckily for me, it came with a single 8GB RAM but a vacant second slot, so I found another for 16GB...so now it runs great and I've breathed new life into it.

    • @TheKazragore
      @TheKazragore 3 ปีที่แล้ว +9

People who complain about thinness really should sit down and shut up. That's part of the whole repairability issue in the first place and it's the first excuse companies use when they're questioned on the topic of repairability. People should be prepared to accept slightly thicker laptops (like this one) in exchange for being able to actually maintain the bloody things. @Xavier Breath PC power supplies are adequately shielded, grounded and boxed in on their own so no one can accidentally touch their internal components when working with other things and get zapped. Also the reason the insides of a charger box are not put inside any laptop or phone. If you get zapped through a motherboard or laptop PSU, you'll only get 12V at most, since that's as high as the current ever gets in these circuits. That's nowhere near deadly margins unless you already have heart problems. Not only would it increase bulk if a laptop had to be designed to take current directly from the mains, but also make it needlessly risky. The very fact that iMacs in particular have exposed power supply bits inside is disgusting. They're the exception, not the rule. Only Apple would dare design their computers in such a terrible, needlessly unsafe manner, and get away with it.
Otherwise as long as you're not cutting the power supply open, 99% of the time you'll be fine.

    • @3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7
      @3lH4ck3rC0mf0r7 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@Xavier Breath Like manufacturers gluing phone batteries in so strongly you either have to stick a knife inside and rip it apart or heat it up a lot, either of those possibilities bearing the chance of an already failing battery burning and leaking questionable fumes?
Why do manufacturers glue it anyway?
Not to mention there's also a few times where I've gotten small cuts on my fingers from handling motherboards. And there's also the chance of burning oneself with a soldering iron (it never happened to me, but I know that can be nasty). Nothing in life is completely risk-free, and there's only so much you can encompass in a design's scope.

So what makes frameworks interesting is the fact that it uses USB (PCIe ?) lanes to extend the peripheral devices, like monitors and display port.
They could theoretically be able to add another USB C or type A to the expansion slots.
It's great to see memory and drive upgrades available on the board, but using those expansion cards for peripheral also allow you to add extra memory, but those are currently capped at 256gb, it'd be worth while to open one of those up to see if they use a type of 2240 nvme/ssd or a SD card.

it'd be cool if they had a thicker version to try and compete with the 'gaming' market instead of 'thin and light'.
Then you could take out the graphics card and add extra battery when you need a laptop to last for a day, and put the graphics card back in when you know you'll be near an outlet all day.

    • @dreamteamdidonethingwrong2499

Or maybe have a docking station accessory that slots right in there when you're close to an outlet but don't need gpu horsepower. And then laptops could market themselves based on how many of these expansion slots they come with. Only problem might be using the same interface for a gpu, battery, and thunderbolt-ish dock, but hell, no one's ever tried before, so it could be possible. At least the dock and battery could use the same port, some dual usb-c configuration perhaps, maybe even for the gpu.
There's endless possibilities for these types of laptops for functionality instead of soldered down e-waste like we're seeing more and more with soldered RAM, CPUs, GPUs, storage, and so on. It's heartbreaking, but also inspiring for new engineers hopefully

I'd like to see Linux focused usage - I mean just to be 100% sure there aren't any weird driver issues or glitches. What about 'hot swap' swapping out of those port modules? Making sure that all the normal functionality is there like the finger print sensor on Linux - something bog standard like Ubuntu or Pop-OS would be fine. I'd just like to see it working. Frameworks does a lot well (modular I/O, clear instructions, one type screw of different length, spare screws) but there are two current shortcomings:
    1. No schematics for the customer. Yes, repairshops can get those but what if you don't have one nearby or you simply want to repair it yourself? Also, do you really own a product if you don't have the schematics? Decades ago you got schematics for pretty much all electronisch that you bougt.
    2. No Ryzen yet in the lineup. It is understandable that a small starting OEM starts with one product segment but it needs to get added.
I'd like to see this approach succeed. Please add the schematics!

It seems like there is a valid reason for the schematics only being available to repair shops, Lewis Rossman mentioned that it was something he bought up with someone from framework and he sead the reason he was given was valid. It's likely that the manufacturers of the parts have some form of NDA in place.

@@raifsevrence True, but I don't like gaming with a laptop anyway. In my opinion it is a better option to use a desktop for gaming and a laptop only for whatever you need to do when you are not at home. Because of price vs performance, because of the performance and because of ergnomics. That low standing monitor, that touchpad, that compact keybaord, I hate using laptops, but we have to so I have one.
I guess it simply depends on how many units they sell, if enough people buy a Frameworks laptop then they can expand their lineup. As I see it expanding it is not that difficult once you have that 'skeleton' in place.

    • @peterjansen4826

@@spartan5280 It is not up to us to defend companies, it is up to us to plead for consumer rights! I have seen Louis Rossmann his video, he did not mention WHY Frameworks does not share schematics. I can think of a few reasons but the most logical reason is this: the company which they buy that motherboard with CPU from does not let them. If we - endconsumers - put pressure on Frameworks to share the schematics then Frameworks has a stronger position when it negotiates with that company which makes/ships those motherboards with CPU's.

I have an invention that still would crush this.
Instead of the CPU, RAM, GPU being in the "lap" portion ... make those just a thunderbolt display and port replicator with a USB kb connected ACTIVE thunderbolt 3 cable -- which could be networked in homes to even disconnect location-from CPU via Thunderbolt-3 switches. That way all the actual computer 'work, fan' bulk, etc., are independent of the KB, display and ports. Networked throughout your home, it's still just 1 plug in the wall (just like your AC) and as TB3 passes more than enough power for the entire device, as well, is still but 1 cord. You'd have also inadvertently cured all the latency of WiFi even as supposedly faster than 1GbE options emerge ... and could then have 10GbE if not SFP28 or even QSFP+.
As a portable, the "power brick" is the whole computer, modular as it is, but more easily so bc the things that had to be ergonomic are in the actual KB and display -- which are NEVER the source of HEAT, and allow swapping out differing-display sizes as any OTHER TB port would support any display that were compatible with the form-factor. Which are already as "technically challenging" as swapping out USB KBs ... along with connecting every other port via that same TB cable. It's as 'peripheral committed' to the box as your shoes are to your pants.
In fact, water cooling it wouldn't be difficult at that point. And despite everyone's focal-fixation being whether air or water have colder temperatures ... it's NOT the key-benefit of liquid-cooling, verse how QUIET larger, lower-RPM fans are vs those which must be thin & small. Small heatsinks have insufficient mass & fan-diameter to run at low RPM, which is what is actually annoying; not even the dB, but the PITCH. It'd also be quite-easy to then make the interior of the actual computer ("think: power brick") encased in rubberized material making it DURABLE and -- waterproof, with an alarm if the liquid cooler-ever had an issue or cooling weren't adequate ... but of course, instead of laptop components, if home -- you could plug in to desktop class devices ... with the criteria being one based on whether you require completely wireless runtime (on battery) or not.

Now all we need is a modular Surface-style tablet. I haven't needed a laptop for 10 years, but I use my tablet all the time.

They can't start tablets until they grow. Buy a laptop for now and support the company. It won't kill you to go back to a laptop for a while.

If they made one with an AMD 5000 series mobile CPU and a dedicated AMD 6000 series GPU, I would buy it. Even if it was $1000 more than the equivalent spec'd laptop from HP, Dell, ASUS, etc.

A lot of people complaining about 'no dedicated GPU' and 'no Ryzen CPU options' or 'no ethernet port' Do they not realise this is the first product from a small company?

Exactly. It's good to tell framework if you want ryzen or whatever but don't be too harsh. They will probably make ryzen laptop soon if they get enough orders.

No Ehternet is solved via their own expansion ports. Yes, it's just USB, but you could do much worse. The rest are legitimate complaints but with legitimate answers.
Personally, my sole complaint is no Thunderbolt. It's already there on the CPU, and since I bought into TB3 then it's a must for me.

Yes, it's a first product. It's a good product. That doesn't mean people aren't allowed to say they want something a bit different. If they don't say it, why would the company even consider it? Like... come on, man, think for just a second. Don't just lash out at people.

Finally someone who agrees with me that these replacement io modules are not great in their current form.
It's nice to be able to replace them, however just having 4 ports including the charge port is a major drawback.
