Jayne Mansfield (born Vera Jayne Palmer; April 19, 1933 - June 29, 1967) was an American actress, singer, nightclub entertainer, and Playboy Playmate. A sex symbol of the 1950s and early 1960s while under contract at 20th Century Fox, Mansfield was known for her well-publicized personal life and publicity stunts. Her film career was short-lived, but she had several box-office successes and won a Theatre World Award and a Golden Globe Award.
Mansfield enjoyed success in the role of fictional actress Rita Marlowe in the Broadway play Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1955-1956), which she reprised in the film adaptation of the same name (1957). Her other film roles include the musical comedy The Girl Can't Help It (1956), the drama The Wayward Bus (1957), the neo-noir Too Hot to Handle (1960), and the sex comedy Promises! Promises! (1963); the latter established Mansfield as the first major American actress to perform in a nude scene in a post-silent era film.
Mansfield took her professional name from her first husband, public relations professional Paul Mansfield. She married three times, all of which ended in divorce, and had five children. She was allegedly intimately involved with numerous men, including Robert and John F. Kennedy, her attorney Samuel S. Brody, and Las Vegas entertainer Nelson Sardelli. On June 29, 1967, she died in an automobile accident in Eastern New Orleans at the age of 34.
In 1967, Mansfield was in Biloxi, Mississippi, for an engagement at the Gus Stevens Supper Club. After two appearances on the evening of June 28, Mansfield, Sam Brody (her attorney and companion), their driver Ronnie Harrison (age 20), and three of her children - Miklós, Zoltán, and Mariska - left Biloxi after midnight in a 1966 Buick Electra 225. Their destination was New Orleans, where Mansfield was to appear on WDSU's Midday Show the next day. At about 2:25 a.m. on June 29, on U.S. Highway 90, 1 mile west of the Rigolets Bridge, the Buick crashed at high speed into the rear of a tractor-trailer that had slowed behind a truck spraying mosquito fogger. The semi-trailer was shrouded by insecticide fog. The three adults in the front seat died instantly. The children, asleep in the rear seat, survived with minor injuries.
Reports that Mansfield was decapitated are untrue, although she suffered severe head trauma. This urban legend started with the appearance in police photographs of the crashed car with its top virtually sheared off, and what resembled a blonde-haired head tangled in the car's smashed windshield. However, the blonde object was a wig Mansfield was wearing, and possibly parts of her real hair and scalp. Her death certificate stated that the immediate cause of death was a "crushed skull with avulsion of cranium and brain". After her death, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommended requiring an underride guard (a strong bar made of steel tubing) on all tractor-trailers; the trucking industry was slow to adopt this change. In America, the underride guard is sometimes known as a "Mansfield bar", or an "ICC bumper".
Mansfield's funeral took place on July 3 in Pen Argyl, Pennsylvania. The service was conducted by Charles Montgomery, a pastor of the Zion Methodist Church. A private funeral service was held at the chapel of the Pullis Funeral Home. A Methodist minister conducted her funeral ceremony. Mickey Hargitay was the only ex-husband present at the funeral. Mansfield was interred in Fairview Cemetery, southeast of Pen Argyl, beside her father Herbert Palmer. - บันเทิง

I remember her crash in 1967. I was 10 years old and I remember back then semi-trucks not having the " Mansfield" bars in the back of the trucks. I don't remember how soon after the crash they started putting the crash bars on the trucks. I remember Jayne and Marilyn Monroe being rivals somewhat, but back then no one could out-do Marilyn. Jayne was certainly gorgeous, but Marilyn had "it" more than Jayne. Jayne had that one hit film and just didn't get more of them, but I remember her in guest spots on popular shows back then on our then finally color TV. A lot of her guest spots were in black and white. What an awful ending for her and her companion's. I heard her kids were in the car also but not injured and Mariska Hargitay going on to become a star herself is cool. Don't hear anything about her siblings. Thanks for the video, Scott. Back in the 1940's life jackets were referred to as a Mae West jacket.

I can always tell how invested you are emotionally in your videos, some more than others. I used to be a truck driver, one of the first women. I will never forget when the Mansfield bar story was told to me. I had someone actually drive there car under the side of my truck. The lady crossed two lanes to go into a mall driveway. She was driving an early 90s ford. Large vehicle, ducked down just in time. Or it would have cut her in two. People are so narcisisstic now on the roads, they have zero respect for Semi trucks. Not even realizing how they will kill you.

Looking at pictures of the car it's a wonder the children survived. I never knew the bar on the truck was named for Jayne Mansfield. So sad. Thank you Scott for sharing this story. ❤
The children did survive the crash including SVU'S Mariska Hargitay who was sleeping on the floor at the time of the crash in which Jayne and 2others were killed

First of all, loved the smooth jazz in the intro. This was horrific when it happened. I remember reading about it in one of the celebrity magazines my mother bought. Jayne was so beautiful, and this accident seemed surreal. Marishka looks like her mother. Of course, at the time the decapitation story was a big part of it. I was glad to hear Scott Michaels version of the truth and gorgeous Jayne was not decapitated. I have never seen the actual site before. Thank you, Scott.

I visited the Jane Mansfield death car when it was in Yadkinville, NC. I saw a sign advertising it and followed the directions and paid $10 to go see it in a barn. That was in the '90s. I know it's been moved now. Great video as always, Scott!

Your videos are so well done. Also particularly sad was the story of Ronnie Harrison and his girlfriend. His girlfriend was pregnant, gave up the baby. Years later their child found out what happened to her biological father and mother. Also tragic.

I'm so glad you report accurate and interesting content. We studied her autopsy in med school and the biggest rumor was she was decapitated. Not true!! (1) As a Canadian you're probably already aware that Cajun country Louisiana was first settled by French speaking eastern Canadians fleeing mainly from Nova Scotia to the area.
(2) From where this video is shot you're probably about 450+ miles south of the site from where Bonnie & Clyde were ambushed and killed on the road (state highway 154) near Gibsland LA.

My father was a truck driver back in the 70’s as a kid I would always be hanging off the bar off the back of the trailer pretending he was driving down a freeway at top speed lol he would often yell out to me ‘get off the Mansfield bar son’, wasn’t til years later I found out how that bar got its name.

The semi was going in the same direction as the car, had slowed to about 35 mph.
The bug spray truck was coming in the opposite direction but was not spraying. There was no fog or cloud. But the spray truck had a red flashing light on top and that’s why the semi slowed down. Jaynes car didn’t and you know the rest.

Dear Scott, know that alligators usualy eat rotten meat like dead chickens, turtles or smakes. I was taught like most people in alligator country if you get taken or bit by an alligators that if you let themtake you down under water, to just play dead and they will let you go from thinking your dead. You can survive aligators bite about 70 percent of time.

Scott Michaels interviewed Ronnie’s girlfriend who’s mothers car was ‘The car’ . Elaine was pregnant with Ronnie’s unborn child. It was an interesting conversation as not much was documented on Ronnie.

Great video Scott, I want to go there some day. I believe Scott from Dearly departed a few months ago when they were moving the car the Palm Springs he did a inside look at what the car looks like and he also did a video of domino who knew the driver of the car. Hopefully he opens his museum in Palm Springs soon! Both are awesome videos!
