Judith Eva Barsi (June 6, 1978 - July 25, 1988) was an American child actress. She began her career in television, making appearances in commercials and television series, as well as the 1987 film Jaws: The Revenge. She also provided the voices of Ducky in The Land Before Time and Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go to Heaven. She and her mother, Maria, were killed in July 1988 in a double murder-suicide committed in their home by her father, József Barsi.
Maria Barsi began preparing her daughter to become an actress when Judith was five. Barsi's first role was in Fatal Vision, playing Kimberley MacDonald. She went on to appear in more than seventy commercials and guest roles on television. As well as her career in television, she appeared in several films, including Jaws: The Revenge, and provided the voices of Ducky in The Land Before Time, and Anne-Marie in All Dogs Go to Heaven.
By the time she started fourth grade, Barsi was earning an estimated $100,000 per year (equivalent to $229,000 in 2021), which helped her family buy a three-bedroom house in West Hills, Los Angeles. As she was short for her age-she stood 3 ft 8 in (112 cm) at age 10-she began receiving hormone injections at UCLA to encourage her growth. Her petiteness led casting directors to cast her as children that were younger than her actual age. Her agent Ruth Hansen was quoted in the Los Angeles Times as saying that when she was ten, "she was still playing 7, 8."
As Barsi's career success increased, her father József, an alcoholic, became increasingly angry and would routinely threaten to kill himself, his wife and daughter. His drinking led to three arrests for drunk driving. In December 1986, Maria reported his threats and physical violence toward her to the police. After the police found no physical signs of abuse, she decided not to press charges against him.
After the incident with the police, József reportedly stopped drinking, but continued to threaten Maria and Judith. His various threats included cutting their throats as well as burning down the house. He also reportedly hid a telegram informing Maria that a relative in Hungary had died, in an attempt to prevent her from leaving the United States with Judith. The physical violence continued, with Barsi telling a friend that her father threw pots and pans at her, resulting in a nosebleed. As a result of her abuse, Barsi began gaining weight and developed compulsive behaviors, such as plucking out her eyelashes, and pulling out her cat's whiskers (see trichotillomania). In May 1988, after breaking down in front of her agent, Ruth Hansen, Barsi was taken by Maria to a child psychologist, who identified severe physical and emotional abuse and reported her findings to child protective services.
The investigation was dropped after Maria assured the case worker that she intended to begin divorce proceedings against József and that she and Judith were going to move into a Panorama City apartment she had recently rented as a daytime haven from him. Maria's friends urged her to follow through with the plan, but she hesitated due to her fear of losing the family home and belongings.
On July 28, 1988, the Los Angeles Times reported that three people were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide and that the bodies were believed to be those of Barsi, her mother Maria, and her father József. The article quoted Police Lt. Warren Knowles as saying a flammable liquid, likely gasoline, had been poured on the bodies of Maria and Judith by József. József's body was found in the garage, dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Neighbor Eunice Daly stated she heard a gunshot around 8:30 a.m. on July 27, prompting her to call the police. Barsi and her mother were buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, in adjoining plots

I found out recently. I was looking up all the voice actors to see what shows they do not if not retired, and I saw this. Her father was a sick human being to something so terrible to his family
She would have been 45 now! A mother, wife, a famous actress and possible director. I grew up watching All Dogs Go to heaven and The land before Time. So adorable, RIH Angels 🥰

I heard of Judith and her mother's murder and just hearing it again got me teary eyed. It was so hard to see the picture of the police crying as they carried Judith's body out of the house. I'm glad that monster wasn't buried with them. May Judith and her mother rest in peace. Thanks for sharing their final resting place.

Never blame a minor detail and thing that's the reason, he was a sick person, hell the entire reason they started dating was the wild stories he told, he told one about killing another man in a bar(which hasn't been proven), he was unwell since the beginning, even hating the mother because her family was somewhat high class while his was lower than lower class
Her mom was the nicest parent I had the fortune of meeting when we attended Nevada Avenue elementary school together. She was friends with my little brother. This was and still is awful. Rip to Judi and her mom
I think it's awful how people blame Maria. She was clearly just as scared as Judith was.

I'm part Hungarian and it was the first language I learned. I'm sure Judith knew Hungarian very well too since both her parents were immigrants from there, and somehow that just makes this case so much sadder to me.. really hits close to home in some way.. this poor sweet girl.. no words 💔

I can’t imagine what she could have accomplished if she was given a chance at life. Such a completely sad ending to such a sweet and young life. RIP to her 💔

I remember hearing about this tragedy shortly after Jaws:The Revenge came out. Needless to say a complete shock. She was probably the best thing about that movie. Rest In Peace little Judith and her Mom🙏🏼
her co-star Lance who played her dad in Jaws The Revenge was a pallbearer I saw his face he just looked in shock and devastated
So sad that she probably grew up around her fathers abuse and knew nothing else for her short 10yrs.Her mom endured who knows how many years of abuse before Judith was born and of course after for the next 10 yrs .I can only imagine the terror they both felt that day.RIP to them both🙏🏻🙏🏻💝

I’ve seen Judith’s story many times and the pain is still so profound that each time still feels like the first. The sweet innocence of that little girl. As adults it should be a privilege to have such wonderful little souls in our care. I’ll never understand why these things happen. What I do know Scott is that the genuine compassion you bring to your videos sets you apart. I believe when someone has a good heart you don’t have to look very hard to find it, because it shines through to the outside. You have a good heart Scott. Ironically, Judith played the part of Kimberley MacDonald in the movie Fatal Vision i(true story) in which she gets killed by her TV father. RIP Baby Girl (and her Mom).

I hate to say this but Maria was give opportunities to get Judith out but she didn't fully take it she bought an apartment or rented one but would only escape during the day they were murdered at night Judith was shot behind her ear as she slept Maria woke up hearing the shot and Josef caught her in the hall and then she was killed after a brief struggle then 2 days later he took his own life after setting the fire I guess

Land Before Time was one of my favourite cartoon movies ever. I didn’t realise the little girl from Jaws: Revenge and Remington Steele had voiced Ducky, or that she had already passed away by the time the movie was released. How I wish her mom had the courage to leave with Judith when she still could, their lives were much more valuable than any of the stuff in that house. CPS really dropped the ball on this one, take her first and let Mom take care of the divorce, not the other way around-and it’s not like the dad was all that rich and powerful you had to think twice before messing with him! RIP Judith. Wish the adults in your life didn’t fail you so badly.
I remember she was killed around the same few months Heather Orourke passed away on the set of Poltergeist 3. Rough time for child actors.
Heather didn't pass away on set. She passed away in a children's hospital in CA.

There are so many. This story is the same as so many other stories. This one stands out only because the child made her parents money and the others didn’t. This is no different than the others. Give them all your love and respect.

What is often not mentioned is that Judith Barsi was cast as one of the two daughters of killer Jeffrey MacDonald in "Fatal Vison," a made for TV movie on NBC in 1984. The other daughter was played by Tracey Gold's little sister. Perhaps the Jeffrey MacDonald case might be something you'd consider covering in future, Scott? Thank God somebody had the good sense not to inter that evil bastard beside Judith and her mother, keep up the good work, Scott!
Wow, that was gonna be my comment somewhat. As soon as Scott came up on the headstones, I braced myself and thought, "I hope somebody DID NOT bury him there". Was relieved when he said he,s not. I didn't see that movie tho, but how strange that is.

I had to Google about leaving the stones on the graves. I love this. Its beautiful.
I heard that the female owner of the home claimed she felt a pain in her back whenever she walked in the hallway and never knew why because at that time she didn't know the history of the house, it's only when she did that she learned the mother was shot and killed in the back in the hallway as she ran to protect Judith, this is so heartbreaking poor little baby taken too soon and her mum as well, so tragic💔💔😇 😇

I've been researching this case since I was 13 this is probably the most heartbreaking story ever.
I think about Judith all the time and I thank her for making my childhood with The Land before time and All dogs go to heaven 💕❤️❤️.
She and I share the same birthday month June but I was born the week after I live in the UK but every year on her birthday I go to my local cemetery and put a flower down below a tree for her 💞💞🙏

Such a sweetheart and such a tragic fate for such an angel. Heartbreaking to know she never got to see All Dogs Go To Heaven when it was finished. Interesting fact: the song "Love Survives" as the credits roll at the end of All Dogs was dedicated to her. Always makes me cry when I hear it. Rest in peace, little Judith. There was a time when Maria bought Judith a kite, just as she was about to play with it, Joszef snatched the kite, Judith cried “You're going to break it!” Jozsef told Maria that Judith was “a spoiled brat who wouldn’t share her toy” and smashed the kite into pieces in front of Judith and Maria

We’ll done man. I’ve heard this story so many times and everytime I come across it I think about Ducky and how much that movie meant to me as a kid. Growing up in a mostly Christian home we weren’t allowed to watch many movies but Land Before Time was one of the few that we saw religiously.

I watched a episode of where houses of famous people was being redone and the house that she was murdered in was one of the episodes. As always great job done Scott by the way I watched the price of glee and as always you was terrific on it.
I do remember this horrific story. Someone should have "stopped' that man long before he took their lives. People - some of them - are too far gone to help. Makes you lose your faith in humanity. Almost. Thanx for these videos and how you present them. Horrible subject, but you bring such a burst of fresh air and hope into the subject just by truthfully being who you are. You - among a handful of others - let me believe in humans after all. Seriously - your calmness and respect of others, as well as your generous and insane sense of humour, lightens many a burdened load. Thanx my friend for what you do. I was only born in 88 so never heard of Judith but i did watch All dogs go to Heaven and I loved that so much. Such a horrible story she should never be a part of. Parents give life but cannot take them away. Children suffer so badly with parental abuse. 😢
So sad, don’t remember this case. Thanks for bringing this young girl and her moms story to light.🌹

I remember her growing up. I was born in ‘74. She was adorable and very talented. I’m so sorry little one. You were only here a short time…but you are so remembered. RIP Judith and your mom.
I remember hearing about it many years ago and it just broke my heart. She was a darling little girl. I have to tell you I saw you on TV last night on the Glee program talking about Cory Monteith in Toronto. It is so cool to see you moving up Scott, you've earned it. It goes without saying that I loved it. You were very professional and came off very knowledgeable. Well done!
I went by the Barsi house 🏠 late one night in December, 2019. All I can say is that the house 🏠 was very eerie to look at. Especially the garage.

She & her murder has always stuck with me since it happened. Maybe bc we were so close in age or maybe bc of the ironic parallel with Fatal Vision. We also looked somewhat similar back then.💐💕

Heather passed away February 1, 1988, and Judith was murdered on July 25th, 1988.
Poor girl. This story makes me cry just a small girl. :/ May she rest in peace.
