This is an incredibly well done video! I can tell you’re advanced, and this is perfect for those of us just getting started. I like how you kept it simple.
My pleasure! Yeah, I was surprised by how little info there is out there for doing fruiting blocks in a still air box, it's always a little tricky to maneuver them in there but this is the best method I've found :)
The lowe's pellets are still the cheapest I've found around me but pretty much all hardware stores should have hardwood fuel pellets. I know tractor supply co also carries them.
It's possible but somewhat difficult. You'd have to get a tissue sample and put it on an agar petri dish, then clean it up through a series of transfers before using it to make your liquid culture.
The sub recipe I mentioned (1.8 lbs wood pellets, 0.2 lbs wheat bran, 3 lbs water) is for one 5 lb bag, so if you want to make more you can just multiply the amounts.
The spawn provides strong and healthy mycelium that can be spread nicely throughout the substrate block to colonize it quickly and reduce contamination risk. The issue with using spent substrate to inoculate more is that it’s been exposed to the outside air and will carry other spores and bacteria which would probably cause contamination. Spawn is sterile besides the one strain of fungus you’re trying to grow. You can use sawdust spawn, which is pretty much a colonized substrate bag used to inoculate other bags, but you wouldn’t do that with substrate that’s been fruited.
have you tried simply using chlorinated water for a minute or so, then soaking in distilled or RO water for a bit to absorb the water. Just thinking that the chlorine might be enough to get rid of contaminants, then in sterile container, let it soak in UV filtered RO water. Might be able to skip the pressure cooker step.
I'm not sure it would be too easy to remove all the chlorine after soaking, and any residual chlorine would negatively effect the mycelium growth. Chlorine also kills some microorganisms quickly, but others are more resistant and take much longer to be killed by the chlorine. There is a similar method called cold water lime pasteurization that works well for more aggressive mushrooms like lion's mane and oyster, I'd recommend looking into that as an alternative to PCing.
Thanks for this, almost no other videos on how to grow lions mane start to finish
Happy to help!

Thanks for the kind words, glad you found it useful!
Dude, thanks for showing this method. I wasn't sure how to inoculate substrate bag and then seal it while using a SAB. The clips is a great tip!

Thank you for the video. Where can I buy the liquid culture?
Hello could you post another wood pellet brand ?
The lowe's pellets are still the cheapest I've found around me but pretty much all hardware stores should have hardwood fuel pellets. I know tractor supply co also carries them.
@camsurbanfarm ok the others i see , for BBQ...and thank you
Do you have to use wheat bran or can you just use hard wood pellets?
You can sometimes get mushrooms with just the pellets but the wheat bran is what gives the substrate nutrients so you'll get much less without it.
Wonderful, thank you.
Happy to help!
is it possible to get mycelium from the store bought (fresh or dried) Lion’s Mane mushrooms?
It's possible but somewhat difficult. You'd have to get a tissue sample and put it on an agar petri dish, then clean it up through a series of transfers before using it to make your liquid culture.
I’m sorry I don’t see the link for making the tincture.
Apologies, just added it. Here's the video: th-cam.com/video/C9apQaGPXwA/w-d-xo.html
How many 5lb bags will you get from this sub recipe?
The sub recipe I mentioned (1.8 lbs wood pellets, 0.2 lbs wheat bran, 3 lbs water) is for one 5 lb bag, so if you want to make more you can just multiply the amounts.
Does isopropanol kill spores or only bacteria?
It’ll kill most spores, but there are some exceptions. Bacterial endospores are somewhat resistant to it.
Is the spawn step really necessary? Can't I just take mycelium from ordinary substrates?
The spawn provides strong and healthy mycelium that can be spread nicely throughout the substrate block to colonize it quickly and reduce contamination risk. The issue with using spent substrate to inoculate more is that it’s been exposed to the outside air and will carry other spores and bacteria which would probably cause contamination. @@camsurbanfarm Ah, thanks for the detailed explanation. That makes sense.
After you harvest the lions mane. What then with the fruiting block? How long can you continue growing in that fruiting block?
You can usually harvest 2-3 times from the same block. Just leave it and it'll regrow!

It's looking easy enough 😂
It is when you break it down, give it a try!
