Could barely hear what you saying with volume set at max.... You are certainly pleasant to look at however I'd also like to see the gear laid out before or as you go through it.

Thanks for the video, can't wait for July 21st! I'm starting then, I'm a bit worried about the water crossings since the melt will be on by then and was interested in your opinion of those sandals for crossings, i know crocks are popular but they seem a bit heavy and I know I would never use them again after the trip....

They would do just fine for water crossing!!! They wouldn't slip off if that's what you're worried about. Good luck and Enjoy!

Holy crap. Do you know what your total pack weight, or base weight was?

My heaviest total pack weight with water and 8 and half days of food was just north of 30 leaving MTR- I want to say 32 lbs. I was always hiking with my day and we split some of the shared gear in my video: stove, solar charger, etc.

One of my biggest regrets was my pack. It was a heavy 5lb pack. I wished I would have used my 2lb Ospreys exos but then again, that day climbing out of MTR with a 30 lb pack, it was nice to have the big bertha pack, or tha weight would have felt awful on me.

Hi there! We were on the trail for 18 days: Aug 18- Sept 4. We sent resupply buckets to Reds Meadow and MTR, but we were ahead of schedule and decided on a nero day at VVR since we had to kill time before our arrival at MTR. MTR was great, but we LOVED VVR, they really cater to backpackers and the whole experience there was great. I would choose VVR over MTR but since MTR was our last resupply before Whitney, we had to do MTR. Good luck and enjoy!

Thanks for sharing your gear list Mallorie. I'm hoping to get a permit for the JMT late August of 2018, and am slowing gathering gear as money becomes available. I have on my "to buy" list an Anker 13000, do you think I should skip the Anker and go with the Suntactics? I wasn't sure where along the JMT I would be able to charge the Anker if that was my only source of additional power. I assume VVR and/or MTR offer access to a wall plug...for a price?
Again, thanks for the video, it gives me some more things to consider before hitting the trail.

Power for recharging electronic devices is available at MTR and Reds Meadow, and I assume VVR, though I didn't go there when I hiked the JMT in 2015. Enjoy the hike, and there are many "low" cost (or lower anyway) than the stuff you buy at REI. Trekking poles from Costco, lightweight tents from Six Moons Design, Klymit pad (or a closed cell foam pad if you are young and don't need lots of padding to sleep well), several lightweight and cheap stoves, wicking shirts from Target, etc. You can easily put together a 15 lb base weight pack for under $1000. I think Paul Mags (pmags) has a low cost pack set-up on his site. He's a triple crowner and a good guy. You may not even need that Anker depending on what you plan on using for electronics.

Thanks for the great information Michael...very helpful! Going through PMags gear list now, very informative as well. While I probably need another $1500 for the trip, maybe half of that is gear. And even though Mallorie's dad broke a cheaper trekking pole, I think the Costco (actually Walmart for me), route for $25.00 is the way I'll go. My LighterPack profile show me at ~20 Lbs with the gear I plan to get.

yes it's amazing how many people have no first aid kit

They are pretty useless. Putting on a band-aid never saved anyone.
