- "An all New Zealand finish to the Cox Plate of 1988!"
Us Kiwis love to beat the Aussies, and when it comes to the Gr.1 Cox Plate of 1988 we did just that! Finishing second the year prior, the John Wheeler trained Poetic Prince partnered with Noel Harris brought home the plate. A thrilling finish alongside fellow iconic Kiwi horses Horlicks and Bonecrusher. 💪 What a field!
It's not going too far to say that the WS Cox Plate was New Zealand's race, up until recently. NZ horses winning as well as NZ bred horses. Pins, Zabeel, Sky Chase, High Chaparral, and on and on
Who would've thought that Horlick's would go on to win this in 12 months time, followed by the Mackinnon and then the richest race in the world in world record time.
I don't think Horlicks won the Cox Plate. This is the closest it got.
She skipped this race in 89 and went to the McKinnon which was very smart because she saved her best for the best
At turn out of straight in above race HORLICKS was lucky to stay on feet - caller missed it !
