Paper Lanterns Japanese Larch
I bought this tree at Art's Nursery in 2024. I wired it into a spiral and mostly left it alone the last two years.
Last week I went to check out the BC Bonsai Society in Surrey. There were nearly 40 people there and all of them brought some pretty amazing trees. There were at least 3 people that brought their own Larch. I had brought this little guy with me and received some welcomed advice. The people there had years of experience and a lot of knowledge to share.
In this video, I took out most of the soil. I hadn't intended to, but there were no real surface roots to speak of and I just kept digging until almost nothing was left. after repotting it, I had a look at the wire, I still had a little left that had to come off. The next day I put on new wire and found a new shape for my little tree.

Thank you for showing how to secure the tree in the new pot! I had no idea. I think I will leave mine in the nursery pot for one more year and see how the trunk looks.

If you are really going for thickening up the trunk, you can plant it in a much bigger pot or even in the ground. I was watching one video where they planted a tree above a piece of slate (or a tile would work too) so that it was easier to dig up and so that the roots would be spreading out horizontally. It seemed to work well for them.

If you don’t prune the tree enough you will lose the tree because it will become overgrown,don’t be afraid to cut the tree it needs it to survive by issuing new growth, good luck
