Little hidden fakt. In the Bartzilla stage when you climb up that building 13:43 there is sometimes someone throwing a sega genesis out the window, but in the genesis version they are throwing a snes out the window. It's those little hidden things that make me happy :-)
"You know that really fun Simpsons arcade game? Let's never release it on home consoles and give everyone bad puzzle platformers instead." - 90s Nintendo
The weird part is that I remember this game being terrible back in the day as a kid and I still played the Hell out of it. I guess it was just because we didn't have any other alternatives for entertainment that particular weekend. The 90s were not all pastel colors and vaporwave, kids.
Loved this game growing up never beat the 2nd India jones stage. Two things I noticed u didn’t do was when you’re on the streets jump over the basketball to get the skateboard which makes the Z bar grow and the other thing is when the bullies are walking with you burp with the milkshake and the paper appears. Great to watch you play this gem and relive hours of my childhood keep it up!
I actually really loved this game when I was young, my brother beat it but I never understood but still had so much fun, I don't think I ever got one page if I did it was the super bart one. Other than that I always died but had fun with it.
You overcome any challenge, you are a legend! Thanks for showing this game in your streams, I've always wondered if this game was beatable. And you proved that it is.
I told you the last time you played this game that if anyone can beat it, you could, because that’s what Mike Matei does, beats hard games. E.g. this and Silver Surfer and Ghosts and Goblins. Congrats!
Was reading a walkthrough today for this, trying to find a good strategy for the Temple of Maggie (for which it was not helpful). What WAS helpful was where it suggested to walk along the street's broken yellow line to avoid many hazards (including buses). The core benefit of this, however, was that TVs appear MUCH more frequently when you do this, something like 5 TVs/minute the guide cites, which can be used to expedite getting pages if you have watermelon seeds on hand.
I honestly love this game and seeing Mike go from completely in the dark on J&MM to finally beating it on stream might be my favorite character arc ever
I started playing Bart's Nightmare and have beaten it too many times. I wish he could see some comments that I leave. Also, destroying the TV with a watermelon pit makes a page appear ONE TIME. Destroying the TV gives ONE free page. Destroying it a second time or more does not do anything.
This was developed by Sculptured Software which became Iguana West and then Acclaim Salt Lake City before Acclaim closed the studio in 2002. It's interesting to note the games designer Bill Williams, who designed early Atari games and Necromancer for PC, left the gaming industry because of company meddling during production of this. He died from Cystic Fibrosis in 1998.
Maggie hinders Bart by firing the pacifier at him,the devil comes at you from all angles plus you have to memorize or/and take note of the correct platform to jump on.
Thanks Mike this is one of my favorite games but I have never known exactly what to do in this game but I watched this from start to finish and I now know how to play and beat this game so thank you
I remember as a kid during the part where the controls go reversed, that I thought I broke the controller and my older brother was going to beat me up lol
The second part of Bartzilla always cracked me up when some of the people in the building would throw their Sega Genesis at him. I wonder, do they throw out a SNES on the Genesis version? ~shrugs~
I was 11 or so, rented at our local video store...was so hard, yet fun. I havent seen this gameplay in almost 30 years...holy-shit..thnx for the memories!
I very rarely watch full playthroughs of anything, but I'm actually very nostalgic about this game. Had it as a kid and of course never beat it. But consistently tried. Even again as an adult I revisited it with slightly better results. So it's a incredible (and hilarious) sight for me to see Mike run through this game.
Hey Mike thanks for showing how to get an A plus on Bart's Nightmare SNES, the best I ever got as a kid playing this was a C LOL. Thanks for all your videos with James and your live streams. Please do Virtual Bart on SNES next.
Remember playing this around a friend's house when I was about 10 years old. Weekend after weekend for hours. Was so difficult to get anywhere and so frustrating. Fucking AAAAASSSSSSS game. Well done Mike you killed it bud
Had no idea you could cling to the SIDES to avoid Marge. That's one big thing that stopped my progress as a kid, I know I got there at least a few times.
Ha, nice job. I rented this game several times as a little kid, and I remember it being ball breakingly hard. I think it's a very cool concept for a game and it's pleasant to look at, it's just lacking in execution. Some explanation on all the cryptic crap in the overworld would be immensely helpful. I never knew about the bubblegum or pillow tricks, and the best I ever got was a C.
I'm digging through the library because Mike hasn't streamed in ten days! I thought these streams would make me crazy, turns out; they keep me sane! Well, either that OR I actually have gone mad; I'm okay not knowing for sure lmfao Thanks Mike!
I've rented this countless times in 1993. It took me and my brother plenty of runs switching over to figure out some of the secrets. Really, never managed any of the tricks seen here: Fish, TV , Soda and "Z" hunting tricks. The maximum score was probably a C. Up to this day i feel Graphics and Music were top notch for that particular timeframe. But god, it's a nasty gameplay experience that engages the player by stressing the limits of his/her patience haha
I watched the James and Mike episode first. And by finally watching this oh my God is painful! I mean technically you never die and keep living in limbo until you beat all the shitty minigames. This game is cruel.
Fucking fantastic Mike! You spent ten hours on this game and finally kicked its ass. I played this game when I was a kid and spent hours and was only able to get B. I am so glad you beat it. Congratulations. Now try beating Barts Nightmare 2
J Valadez yeah I’m not done yet and this is painful to watch lol. I think he thought he had to jump on all the squares (like Qbert, as he said). ToM 1 is probably the easiest and fastest page to get
Dude i never owned this game but i rented it enough that my oarents should have just bought it for me... But can you imagine trying to play this back in the day with no instruction manual? Also apparently i had the misfortune of just consistently playing some of the hardest levels cuz pretty sure this is the game where there's the big power plant level and that was way too long and insanely difficult even once you figured out what the objective was. EDIT: i had to look it up but it was virtual bart that i had in mind. When i saw the game play i am not surprised why o had them confused cuz theyre both made up of a bunch of minigames.
Congratulations. Admit it Mike, you love this game. The biggest problem with this game besides it’s difficultly curve is, it plays by a certain set of rules but it’s not obvious what those rules are without looking at the instruction manual or guide.
GOD... even HEARING the SOUNDS of this GAME in the BACKGROUND is giving ME NIGHTMARES!!! (loll) haa. Played a lot of this game back in the day... only knew what I was doing in a COUPLE of boards though.. and some other ones were just HOPELESS.. (lol!) I feel like I might have what it takes to try this game again... (lol!) ha : o
I feel like that last homework needs more speed and 100% less backtracking. I think Mike was making it hard on himself. OTOH, I've never played it, I kinda want to now.
Mike I wanna see you try to beat Mega Bomberman on Sega Genesis. The last level and boss is super difficult, it took me 20 years to beat it. I guarantee you will have a blast ;)
This game should be renamed 'mike's nightmare'
Virtual Bart should be next.
@@RacerX-124 i agree
"Player's nightmare"
Sh1ttest farkin' game ever possibly as well
Ngl this game is one of the most soulcrushing of retro games alongside tazmania and taz in escape from mars

That look of pure shock on Lisa's face when you get the A+ ending, you know she was just waiting for the opportunity to scowl at you! 😂

Nothing like watching a grown man cry about a video game from 1992.
I know seriously wtf he has no god man worries he's probably rich if he can sit all day and play Zelda quests over and over then fuck him

Karlimo they did make ports for it on Amiga, Commodore 64 and Dos.
You must admit, Bart's Nightmare is EXACTLY what the title claims it to be.
Nah, they'd have to call it The Player's Nightmare for it to be perfectly accurate.
The weird part is that I remember this game being terrible back in the day as a kid and I still played the Hell out of it. I guess it was just because we didn't have any other alternatives for entertainment that particular weekend. The 90s were not all pastel colors and vaporwave, kids.
I had this on SNES as a kid because my parents know I liked the Simpsons. But this game is just all sorts of difficult.
I can't help but think of all the effort that was put into this title. All the different art work to animate everything is really awesome.

Can confirm this completed this game multiple times
Temple of maggie stage 2 requires a ton of backtracking and mostly staying on the middle two rows
I rented this back in the day! I’m glad to see it really was confusing and hard, and I wasn’t just terrible at it.
I honestly love this game and seeing Mike go from completely in the dark on J&MM to finally beating it on stream might be my favorite character arc ever
I think this game looks and sounds great. I used to rent it all the time.
I started playing Bart's Nightmare and have beaten it too many times. I wish he could see some comments that I leave.

wtf is a watermelon pit?
This game is brutal.
The Bartman Segment truly feels like a game, the best of all Mini-Games that is.
omg i could never beat that indiana jones part, it was impossible to beat when i was a kid... overall i liked the game tho
Such a fun and challenging game, I've only gotten the a+ rating once lol. Was more than happy to watch this play through. 👍

same here i still have trouble with it lol
In the Indiana Jones thing you have to take care to push down some of the blocks as you go, as it pushes up other blocks elsewhere.
True and try get eggs but not go out of your way for them and be ready to whip the blue devils
The Dark Souls of The Simpson's lol
Trying to get an A+ on your actual homework is a lot more fun than trying to get an A+ in this game.
Thanks Mike this is one of my favorite games but I have never known exactly what to do in this game but I watched this from start to finish and I now know how to play and beat this game so thank you

Man you are really fun to watch. I'm glad I found you.
you may not be the best of player , nor the quickest ,but sure is the most interesting to ever watch ! good job man
The speed runner are basically game bullies and Mike Matei is an underdog. We cheer his victories because his victories are uncertain.
i love how every time you fuck up they toss your sorry ass right back into the streets, Bart's Nightmare is like a metaphor for life.

Has there been a worse level in all of video game history than the Temple of Maggie? I...honestly don't think there has.
