Xbox 360 seemed like the JRPG destination for exclusives when this was released. Tales of Vesparia and Star Ocean were exclusives, leading me to choose 360, but exclusives stopped coming after 2010 or so.
They sure did, and that sucks. I wonder if it was cheaper to develop for ps3, because a lot of low budget jrpgs ended up getting released on that platform.
I definitely don't think that's the case. In general, the 360 was pretty much always the lead development platform for multiplatform games, and 360 versions were almost always SLIGHTLY better optimised until developers finally mastered the system at the end of its lifecycle. The decision to use the Cell processor in the PS3 has often been regarded as an unwise choice made by Sony, but I don't know enough about it on a technical level to comment on that. In general, I think it's pretty safe to say that development on the 360 was easier and less costly for most seasoned developers, although it's probably a lot more nuanced than that. In the end, it's probably the fact that the PS3 vastly outsold the 360 in its native Japan that caused the decline of JRPGs on Microsoft's machine, but it did get a surprising amount of games in the genre (I mean, compared to the original Xbox at least). Infinite Undiscovery, Blue Dragon, Tales Of Vesperia, The Last Remnant, Star Ocean: The Last Hope, Magna Carta 2, Enchanted Arms, Lost Odyssey. Nothing mindblowing obviously, though I do have a strong fondness of Lost Odyssey.
I remember really enjoying this game back when it released. I'll also never forgive this game for having a 49 point achievement and a 1 point achievement that was insanely difficult to unlock.
All I knew of this game was the dinner song. Glad to hear there's an actual, solid game behind it. I missed out on many games for the 360 because I swore that if my 360 ever redringed after my warranty was up I wouldn't buy another one for at least 10 years just to be sure that Microsoft didn't make any money off it. And sure enough; 2 weeks after my warranty was up it died on me. And here we are 11 years later...
Lost Odyssey was my main reason to get a 360. Even though it has very few JRPGs, at least they're ones I love -- Lost Odyssey, Tales of Vesperia, & Manga Carta 2. I didn't care for The Last Remnant (basically a SaGa game). I do have Infinite Undiscovery, but it's been on my backlog all these years, due to bad things I've heard (& many games getting released). But this review urged me to try it soon, as I love most of Tri-Aces' games (especially the Star Ocean series). Thanks.
I always love JRPGs that try to break the standard mold. Almost all of Tri-Ace's games, The Last Remnant, Lighting Returns FF13, Dark Cloud 2, Super Robot Taisen OG Saga: Endless Frontier, FF Type-0, 3rd Brithday.
I really enjoyed this game .I like most of the characters The combat was fun. And the story was actually very well written. it's just too bad we'll never get a second game just like Eternal Sonata.
@@RedWizardFox I think he means a finished version, just like Eternal Sonata (Xbox), the game was unfinished but still published. However they published finished version of Eternal Sonata on PS3

@@psplayer1344 Interesting fanfic, I prefer the version where SHE went on to make some connections in the TV world and learned coding (Ruby and JavaScript) so that she could also make games.
Remember liking this game, but quit 15 hours or so into it due to two crushing problems: horrible save point placement and awkward healing mechanics. For healing you either request it from other characters (who dont alwats respond) or use the menu that doesn't pause combat leaving you helpless. After I lost to a boss while trying to reach a healing potion only to go back an hour to the start of the dungeon, I decided I wasn't having more frustration than fun.
I actually had that same problem. I found that my healers would end up getting their heal spells canceled by an enemy attack. So I ended up running away a bit, and having the party follow. If you put your weapon away, they will too, and then they can heal you, once you've lead them away from enemies. Also, keeping a big stock of healing items helps, since everyone will use those, and you can't interrupt item uses.
John F. I will agree with there for the healing and save points some are just downright weird, but the healing problem you get used to it and find ways around. In all honesty you can do what most people did which is turn off all healing spells and then your characters will always use items and sometimes with better frequency than healing spells
I remember back in high school and the 360 was only a couple years old or so at the time. Me and all my friends were trying to scrape money together to get our own 360's. One of them already had one and he kept going on about this game. I was blown away by the amount of discs this game came with. I'd never seen that before in my life. I was always confused by JRPG content back then but I can't deny, the game looked pretty dam good. Now I'm a massive RPG/JRPG fan...funny how things turn out.
@@AvalancheReviews I can't believe what I've been missing honestly. When I played FF7 for the first time a few years back I was blown away despite it's age.
I’m so glad you covered this game! One of my favorites of that gen of consoles. And had an amazing cast of characters. After a point, I would go into seraphic gate listening to inner universe from the ghost in the shell SAC ost using only Capell and Sigmund. Good days.
You know, before playing this game, I never knew how much I wanted commentary of the main character on the status screen that changes with story progression.
What’s interesting about the title is that the game shared the same currency as Star Ocean which made me wish this game took place within the same universe. Not only that but some moves reminds me of attacks you’d see in said title. Loved it. Loved it all.
Very nice review, I myself fell in love with this game the first time I played it. Now trying to get every achievement and have put over 100 hours into this game. There's just something about it that gripped me

I'm not sure why people tend to say that the 360 was lacking in JRPGs because I found it to be the opposite. It even had some exclusives, like this game, that the PS3 didn't get. Additionally it also received Eternal Sonata way before it was ported to the PS3, as well as Tales of Vesperia. Exclusive wise there was Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, and Magna Carta 2. Though not exclusive there was also NieR, Resonance of Fate, Enchanted Arms, Star Ocean: The Last Hope as well as all three of the Final Fantasy XIII trilogy of games. I actually bought the 360 over the PS3 because at the time I got it the PS3 didn't really have many JRPGs, though this was around the time that Eternal Sonata was released on the 360.
I remember getting really far then saving in a cave with no exit and enemies would poison me and I didn't have any way to heal it so I couldn't even grind. I was frustrated that I couldn't play it through to the end.
God this game was fun. I was in the last two areas in the game & I didn't even realize it. I guess I was hoping there was more... Like in most RPGs. I’m gonna have to revisit this one my Xbox Series. I had this game and bought three copies on 360. Basically all the games crapped out disc wise on the final battle. After all these years, I think it was my console…though it never had that problem with other games. 🤷🏾♂️
"Sakaguchi Fanboys" man I guess there is an ardent fan following for anything now huh? I sold this one off when I got rid my Xbox 360 collection but when you always do a review I tend to either want the game, want to play the game or regret selling it. I think I still have an Xbox 360 somewhere and if you keep making 360 exclusive videos I might buy some of my collection back. Great work as always dude.
Oh man, I remember this game. I loved it, but hated the horrendous lip flaps. Additionally, in the video at 1:24-1:29, I believe this was the forest that made me drop the game for a week or so. Ultimately, I looked up a guide on GameFaqs and went on to finish it. Man, I wanna replay this now.
Beating the Ethereal Queen in the post-game bonus dungeon on the hardest possible difficulty was certainly a challenge. And the achievement for it would net you 1 whole gamer score point hehe.
BEST RPG ON THE 360 ! I played every RPG on the 360 (with full achievements and unlockables) and Infinite Undiscovery I rate the highest ! Im waiting for it to get released on steam to 100% the game again (skills included) =))
Great review as always, my man! I am so, so glad you talked about this game! I recently picked this up on the 360 for under $10, and I was blown away! The only thing anyone talks about with this game is it's name, but for me, this is the kind of game that sold me on the console in the first place. On a Tri-Ace related note, have you ever tried Exist Archive on PS4/Vita?
Thank you! No, I never heard of that game till today, and it looks really cool. I think that would make for a perfect addition to my small vita library.
Picked this up earlier this year with Last Remnant, Star Ocean, and Vesperia. Xbox 360 just never seemed to make sense as a destination for RPGs, and the idea of the two together (in retrospect) still sounds weird ha.
I love old Tri-Ace games. Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2, Resonance of Fate.. never got into star ocean tho. Wanted to try Infinite Undiscovery but never had x360
Man, Star Ocean on ps2 is something special. I think copies go for pretty cheap. I would definitely recommend trying it out, since you like all those awesome Tri-Ace games. Resonance of Fate is sooooooooo damn good!!!
To me, the whole game is a very mixed bag, there are so many things I like about it, but too many annoyances get in the way of enjoying these things. The gameplay is fun and intricate, but due to hecticness often devolves into button-mashing. The story is deep and interesting, but over half of the game is focused on almost everyone being assholes towards Capell for no particular reason or stating the obvious. I think Tri-Ace could really do so much more if there was a sequel or maybe if they went the FF route and made each game a separate thing, but left the core mechanics.
No one I talk to has ever heard of infinite undiscovery. My mom picked it up for me for my birthday one year and it was a decent romp through an fantasy world.
Been playing this game again recently (never finished it) on the xbox one, as it is now backwards compatible. And due to it really impressive emulation seem to eliminate most of the frame rate issuse it had on the 360. Really enjoying it so far and hopefully i will finally finish it this time on my 3rd attempt. 🤟😁👊
Always avoided this one, but after watching your review it appears it's actually pretty damn solid. I prefer action RPGs over traditional turn-based ones, so I may end up checking this out.
@@AvalancheReviews Yeah some good gems there and they will add more On JRPG front there are Lost Odyssey, BlueDragon, Enchanted Arms, Star ocean Last hope etc that i have already purchased Lost Odyssey plays so great on BC, true masterpiece
Damn, I didn't even know this game exited, and you already convinced me to give it a try 4 minutes in. This reminds of Magna Carta 2, which was another great RPG from Xbox 360 I barely got the chance to play. Have you ever played it? Would be awesome to see a review of that.
i played it for awhile but i felt like the story wasn't really that engaging as this game and also the constant switching during combat was although unique but rather hard to get used to. Maybe i'll give it another shot one of these days when i have the time.
sucks that Sony made the PS3 so hard to develop and created the CELL which was a nightmare to program for in 2006-2008. Lot of Japanese devs had to keep making PS2 games because they couldn't jump to next gen. Microsoft gave a lot of support to Japanese devs that wanted to make games on the xbox 360 but in the end foreign consoles just don't sell in Japan. Sony really screwed Japan big time but I am glad the PS4 is easy to develop for and now all these Japanese devs are making a huge comeback! Infinite Undiscovery trailer had this awesome song that plays but it was never used in the game, I always remember that when thinking of this game
I just bought this game a day ago and I uses TH-cam to watch videos about it to get up to date with it and I'm pleasantly surprised to see a new video still being made for this game which came out in 2009. It's also much better than last remnants and enchanted arms which came out in the same era one is glitchy and I can't believe squareenix made and release it. The other one is dated and tedious.
Yeah, it definitely stood above the rest of the 360 rpgs. It really felt like they were passionate about making it. As for reviewing an obscure game, from the past, that's what we're all about here!
I always thought this game was amazing I played the whole game got all the songs, mastered enhancing, and smithing, I even when into the secret dungeon to fight the secret bosses and even before that I got the secret character Spoiler alert: It was the father who died that I managed to recruit again
I bought this game on a whim after play Tales of Vesperia, Eternal Sonata a few other RPG's. I was highly surprised by the game considering I never heard of it before. Just saw it at a gamestop and said screw. It was a worthy purchase. I would like to see you try to complete The Last remnant on xbox 360. Game is a nightmare on there but good on PC.
IF you play the pc version. Make sure you go to the wiki and look up the PC tweaks. For some reason the high settings are actually disabled and can not be activated ingame. It seems square had no experience with the Unreal engine and most of what the game can do is disabled. Just a tip :) I have a bunch of hours in the game cause I loved screwing with your build.

Beating the Ethereal Queen in the post-game bonus dungeon on the hardest possible difficulty was certainly a challenge. And the achievement for it would net you 1 whole gamer score point hehe.
+Tony McModeNut oh good! So it's totally worth it.
I really liked how the game changed at a certain event and things went really dark. Of course, I don't REALLY want to talk spoilers, lol
Love this game!! Wish it would get a remaster at least for xbox and ps4
infinite undiscovery is easily oner of my favorites
HE FUCKING INCLUDED DINNER DANCE
It would have been illegal not to. HA!
I love playing this after.....dinner
Great video Avalanche!!
Thanks!
Final Fantasy 12's younger brother.
What is the rock song playing at the end of the video? I'm really liking it.
blue water blue sky. From the Guilty Gear X2 ost
Picked this game up earlier today. The beginning is slow and weak and I put it down. I’ll try to get into it again, definitely,
If you like this, look into the Ys series, basically the still ongoing grandaddy of all action JRPG games (sort of, its complicated)
I love this game. Been wanting to play it again so badly.
I got 999/1000 achievement points. Infinite mode was to difficult for me back then
Well, when Xenia can play this title or if it's ever given a re-release on PC I'll definitely give it a try! Thanks for the review!
No, thank you! I would fucking love to see this game ported to steam!! I would definitely buy it again.
hidden gem 💎
I did not expect him to like this game
Been playing this game again recently (never finished it) on the xbox one, as it is now backwards compatible. And due to it really impressive emulation seem to eliminate most of the frame rate issuse it had on the 360. Really enjoying it so far and hopefully i will finally finish it this time on my 3rd attempt. 🤟😁👊
Dinner.
Also, great game. Would love to hear your thoughts on Resonance of Fate, btw! You ever play that?
I used to love this game!!
12:01 how do you guys measure the fps on a console?
Dinner! Dinner! Dinner!
Best scene ever
Why will his never go on sale at the Xbox store on Series X. It is stuck at $19.99
If you can find an actual disc of the game for less than 20$, it plays perfectly via backwards compatibility. That's how I play it now.
Oh no...THE DINNER DANCE!
Always avoided this one, but after watching your review it appears it's actually pretty damn solid. I prefer action RPGs over traditional turn-based ones, so I may end up checking this out.
+Gameplay and Talk that's awesome to hear. I literally started this channel to get people on board with games they might have passed up.
i didnt realize that enchantments stacked up to 4x. when i did, any fight became cake.
This comment has me wanting to play this again. Ha! I forgot about this game until I saw this.
Great review, will buy on Xbox one BC soon
It also alleviates tech issues so there is that
That'll be fun to play around with! I really need to get an xbox one just for the 360 game compatibility!
@@AvalancheReviews Yeah some good gems there and they will add more
On JRPG front there are Lost Odyssey, BlueDragon, Enchanted Arms, Star ocean Last hope etc that i have already purchased
Lost Odyssey plays so great on BC, true masterpiece
Can anyone tell me what the song is that he uses at the start of his videos?!
If The Last Remnant can get a remaster on Switch this game should definitely be available.
Agreed!
Microsoft publishing
Damn, I didn't even know this game exited, and you already convinced me to give it a try 4 minutes in.
This reminds of Magna Carta 2, which was another great RPG from Xbox 360 I barely got the chance to play. Have you ever played it? Would be awesome to see a review of that.
i played it for awhile but i felt like the story wasn't really that engaging as this game and also the constant switching during combat was although unique but rather hard to get used to. Maybe i'll give it another shot one of these days when i have the time.
I got this game today.....For a POUND!!! Yep....One British £. Thanks to your positive review, i can't wait to give it a try.
Fuck yeah! Great price for a great game
amm..i think i got mine for $15 and i paid another $5 for the strategy guide when i got it in 2011..still think it was worth the money till this day.
takes me a while to realize " Ayuu " means Infinite Undiscovery
Ha! I guess I could have explained that.
sucks that Sony made the PS3 so hard to develop and created the CELL which was a nightmare to program for in 2006-2008.
Which sucks because the ps3 was such a powerhouse. I would have loved to see devs really take advantage of it for more rpgs.
Yeah dog shout out nice video aswell bro !!!
+Retro revolutions Jareds gotta stick together
I always thought this game was amazing I played the whole game got all the songs, mastered enhancing, and smithing, I even when into the secret dungeon to fight the secret bosses and even before that I got the secret character
Spoiler alert:
It was the father who died that I managed to recruit again
I can't believe I've never even heard of this before
yeah i think it got really nasty reviews when it came out and it flew under the radar for most people..same thing with magna carta 2
@@lyhthegreat Shame how things work out sometimes, I'm just glad I found out about it at all
IT IS NOW BACK COMPAT ON XBOX ONE. I REPEAT IT IS NOW BACK COMPAT ON XBOX ONE!
Fuck! I need to buy an Xbox 1 just to upconvert my 360 games!
I have the pc version, and I have been planning on picking it up again. That would make for an interesting video.
IF you play the pc version. Make sure you go to the wiki and look up the PC tweaks. For some reason the high settings are actually disabled and can not be activated ingame. It seems square had no experience with the Unreal engine and most of what the game can do is disabled. Just a tip :) I have a bunch of hours in the game cause I loved screwing with your build.
good lookin out! I remember it looking pretty good for such an old game. Never knew i could make it look better.
