I have a similar love hate relationship with this game, it's even worse for me because I'm a completionist, everytime I try to replay it I learn something new that usually means I locked myself out of a more optimal option or out of a certain guild task or something, it's both a compliment that I'm still learning new things about it even now and an indictment of just how impossible it is to fully complete. It's basically become the White Whale to my Captain Ahab. One day I will finally 100% though if it's the last thing I do.
well... there is one thing that requires you to choose one of two things, that will lead to a diferent outcome. you can't do both in one playthrough, it has to be two 😭
@@savalaner2086 Oh yeah I remember that, it really depends on what version of the game you play too, PC and PS4 there's basically no reason not to side with Roberto objectively better and more rewards with no real downside, it still counts as all quests completed and won't penalize you for missing Ophelia's exclusive quest. But if you play on Xbox 360 the original like I do then you have to side with Ophelia if you want credit for all quests completed and by extension to fight The Absolute Conqueror and worse the official strategy guide does not mention this trade off at all and even suggests siding with Roberto which is the wrong choice for completionists on that version which actually led to one of my many restarts.

No shame in giving up on this game. When I first played it, it was on the 360, where mindlessly grinding was the worst possible thing you could do. I gave up halfway through and didn't revisit it until years later.
@@RushHourWeekend yeah same, I'd totally give it another chance if it was available on pc. A game that might interest you is Soul Nomad and the World Eaters.
i remember playing this on the 360, i spent many months figuring out the systems of the game, it consisted of trial and error but i eventually figured it out. I used to love old games being opaque, when there was something to discover, now every game has a wiki.
(go to read more for a shorter version) my main tip for people who are just starting out on the game, is to not grind AT ALL, until you get all 18 character slots. the reason for this is because when you beat enemies, you get closer and closer to getting a higher br (battle rank), and when that happens enemies get stronger. it's not a problem if you only use the characters that you will be using for the rest of the game, but you won't be able to do that until you have all 18 party member slots (shortly after disk two if you're playing on xbox 360). so if you start grinding early in the game, you will make enemies stronger, but you'll only have access to party members who are basically useless (excluding the generals, david, and a few party leaders you can recruit, and even that won't matter much on 360 because you can have a limited amount of payer leaders) meaning you'll only level up party members that will be outclassed within a boss battle or two | so basically, if you grind early, you will gain br, but the party members that get levels, are ones that are bad in general, making you gain br, but not gain much power in return. higher br = stronger enemies. wait until you get all 18 party member slots to use during battle (shortly after the start of disk two) then you can grind, but it will still be hard to beat bosses because you will still be gaining br while grinding. bosses have a minimum br, and I think they have a maximum br, so if you grind so much that you get 1k br or something, you'll most likely be fine. on that note, try not to be below boss's minimum br because then the boss just has extra stats and you are left with below par stats
In other words, game punish you for early and late grinding? After getting the 18 characters, how much would you recommend to grind? Only to reach the minimum BR the Boss requires? Any other tips when it comes to party composition? Thx for the tip, started this game in january and drop it because i like to grind and didn't knew enemy stats scale per your BR Level, i may give it a second try.
I have a somewhat annual tradition of intalling The Last Remnant and seeing how far I can get before I quit. I've never beaten it, or gotten close. It's got such a rich world and cool lore, I love the gameplay, but something drives me away from sticking with it.
Weird, I don't remember this game having any issues on PC, then again I haven't tried running it above 60 FPS like you're mentioning the issue with it might be.
It's not like his games don't have interesting mechanics if you understand them. Although sometimes it's frustrating to look something up and realize there was basically no chance you were going to figure it out. What even is the point of hiding stuff like that?
I remember playing this game knowing next to nothing about the mechanic, I just grind for the highest rank arts, lock everything but the art for rush, and healing for the other filler chars. My Rush probably do around 70-80% of the damage so any battle that didn't have him is total hell. All of my boss fights is pretty much RNG if rush union survived so he can do the work. The most disappointing thing I remembered about this game is recruiting the twin, as bosses they kicked my ass but when recruited they're garbage 🤣
Yeah, I have a similar feeling with the game as well. I absolutely adore the battle system. It’s not explained much, but you can sort of trial and error your way through it. You can manipulate the randomness to be in your favor to the point that it doesn’t feel like randomness. I like that, the gameplay is a combination of JRPG and strategy, it was genuinely cool. What I really hate though, is the fact that you have to skip almost 70% of the game in order to play it properly. Yes, you have to dodge ALL of those random small critters on the map (and only fight mandatory battles for quests and such), because you don’t want to have a high BR so that you won’t get so much lower stat gains down the line. I hated this, it really just wants you to not play the game in order to play the game. It’s absurd.

Apparantly the PC version lets you do that but I only played it on 360 and Square-Enix being the bellends that they are took the game down from steam!!! I think the problem with this game ultimately is that they didn't go all in with the management, like you said, if you could equip everyone, sure it might be time consuming to optimize but some people actually really like that sort of thing, so why limit it to just rush!? It makes it feel like no matter what I do I'm not improving or getting better by doing sidequests and getting new gear, it's jsut sat there im my inventory completely unused, which makes the game feel underwhelming in regards to rewards, so only rush's group is going to benefit from all the investments I put in, all thhe other groups are fixed. We're very lucky to have a port of Fantasian coming later this year, finally escaping the apple arcade hellhole. Mistwalker has done a much better job at creating Final Fantasy games than modern day Square Enix, which isn't surprising considering Sakaguchi knows what he's doing.
Square Enix is publishing it for Playstation, Xbox, Switch, and Steam this Winter, and they're adding both Japanese and English voice acting. Should be a real treat.
i love FF12 but FF12 vannilla (2006) was the same, you could miss the best weapon if you open the wrong chest. And you could miss many side quest if you didnt read a guide.
I had this game on the Xbox 360 loved it but never got far in it, when they did the remastered version I got it on ps4 and switch, according to my switch I’ve put 280 hours into and STILL HAVEN’T COMPLETED IT
I didn’t see it in the game, but my experience in my 7-8 play throughs, you need to actually use the minimap and choose actions based on where your union is relative to enemy unions. You can use this to deliberately trade flanks sometimes. I’d have to draw a picture, but basically if you send a union at the closest enemy union to them, they will dead lock as planned, and then if you send another union to flank them, and your 3rd union to deadlock the closest union to your flanking union, you can trade flanks. This is valuable because if you kill the initial union, you get the flank morale and then your first deadlocked unit will just enter deadlock when the 3rd enemy union engages them. If you don’t kill the initial union, the enemy would get a flank at this point.
I suspected distance between units played a role in whether or not you get interferences/interceptions, but when the number of enemy unions outnumbers your own, it feels completely random. I'm sure it's not, there's probably a formula somewhere that explains everything, just like most systems in the game.
Eh they were top tier in the PlayStation 1 and to a somewhat lesser extent PS2 era. It seemed like once they got into HD development and they were needing to make money more than anything they started to really just fall apart
0:50 just saying, I have no idea how class systems work, but I still beat the game because low br. the only ways to beat the game are these insane luck during battle and/or with monster loot + skill low battle rank run + skill + some luck or spend a year grinding and getting max battle rank so that you can grind all characters to max stats without enemies getting stronger and that way you can do literally whatever you want + skill + some luck
Mistwalker unfortunately pulled the same stunt with Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, and Sakaguchi stated in an interview with Bloomberg that he has no intention on porting or remastering any of his games. Giant shame, since Lost Odyssey is an excellent game.

I liked the game never could finnish it tho cuz the game had a weird difficulty curve where the enemy's power scaled with your battle rank so if you do to many battles your screwed
I played this game around a year ago. I knew about the complexity of the battle system because I had heard about it. Ended up watching a video guide to assist me in getting through the game. Enjoyed it very much but fuck if you tryed grinding early or at all you would be punished unless you had the best team which you dont get till later on. Fun game but man that system abuses you.
really like this game and freakin hate this game at same time despite the unfairness you can actually beat it, still not fun of BR system im just thanksful for people that figure things up (BR hidden system, class, quest, and item) its make game more enjoyable and less frustating i wish they make real remake of the game with better engine and better PC port but this is SE so probably not! thanks for the Last Remant review though! hopefully there is another company game that make game like this in better form

I can’t say I disagree with any of your points on this game. I too love this game, but by god can it be frustrating. Disappointingly, I have yet to complete the game despite having god only knows how many hours dumped into it. Yet to find a game like it though. Also, I miss the Chaos Rings games. They weren’t perfect, but man were they gems and some of the best high quality mobile games of there time with good darker stories.
Once you've learned all the information about this game, it's beyond amazing. This game is so special and there will never be another game like this in 100 years because no one has the audacity to do what Square did. I can really say that this game came out way before its time.
The gameplay is one-of-a-kind and it has a high skill floor, which are very appealing qualities. Square really took a gamble with this one, making a big budget rpg that isn’t accessible, which - in this era of “focus tested” products - I don’t know if we’ll ever see again.
@@RushHourWeekend the default difficulty for this game should've been some kind of Honor Mode difficulty. But on the normal difficulty the boss levels should've been capped regardless of player level. I remember getting stuck at a boss fight and just dropped the game. It's not fun to play it the "right" way with a low BR run. If they capped the boss levels then at least the player could've grinded out of it (I did an 21 levels grind to beat the Atelier Ryza final boss), but LR doesn't even allow the players to get out of the situation.

Square always treated their fans dirty.
It is rough being a fan of their games, isn't it? 😂
@@RushHourWeekend yes it is.
Eh they were top tier in the PlayStation 1 and to a somewhat lesser extent PS2 era. It seemed like once they got into HD development and they were needing to make money more than anything they started to really just fall apart
There does at least seem to be hints they are starting to get better finally.
0:50 just saying, I have no idea how class systems work, but I still beat the game because low br. the only ways to beat the game are these
insane luck during battle and/or with monster loot + skill
low battle rank run + skill + some luck
or spend a year grinding and getting max battle rank so that you can grind all characters to max stats without enemies getting stronger and that way you can do literally whatever you want
+ skill + some luck
I remember how this game was on the Famitsu top most wanted PS game in japan FOR YEARS and SE said 'no, fuck you, buy an xbox'.
Mistwalker unfortunately pulled the same stunt with Blue Dragon and Lost Odyssey, and Sakaguchi stated in an interview with Bloomberg that he has no intention on porting or remastering any of his games. Giant shame, since Lost Odyssey is an excellent game.
My time with this game was the best. I would just fight and fight. Forget about the damn story lol
Hot damn you described my whole gaming experience with this game xD The Emma duo fight is basically lottery but i try to split the union next time.
i watched 5-6 critics / review of the game and i think it's the best one.
i tried this game years ago, seems like i have to stream it :D i feel like i've been playing this game from the beginning. I started it back then but didn't understand it
13:20 WTF i didn't knew that !
I love this game and it doesn't love me as much but I keep coming back to it. Currently on my third or fourth playthrough. Thank you Rush Sykes Hour for this wonderful video to portray how I feel about this game.
Now i don't know how i actually finished the story. Was it based on pure luck...
.... I think I saw Remastered in my Steam library....
i have this game on steam for years and your video make me finally play. Thanks
Gacha games have fairer mechanics than this game lol
Still haven´t seen the video, but as someone who has played and beaten the game I totally AGREE with the title!!!!!! Love/Hate the f**k outta it.
Yeah dude, I tried this game and the fire idol… man, it put a sour taste in my mouth and when I hit the wall and searched online to get an idea on how to progress and seen it was 100% luck i but the bullet, beat him and stopped playing haha
I don't blame you one bit. I don't know how many times I came close to quitting this game during my first playthrough. It can be brutal.
I've played the switch version and finished it almost 100% on hard mode
I love the hate-love-passion vibe of this video. Keep up the good work man, didnt even heard about this game but it was awesome to listen to all this
As you can see from some of the comments, this game brings out the devil in players, but it's that kind of addictive pain, like eating spicy food.
Fun game but man that system abuses you.
really like this game and freakin hate this game at same time
despite the unfairness you can actually beat it, still not fun of BR system
im just thanksful for people that figure things up (BR hidden system, class, quest, and item)
its make game more enjoyable and less frustating
i wish they make real remake of the game with better engine and better PC port but this is SE so probably not!
thanks for the Last Remant review though! hopefully there is another company game that make game like this in better form
I love this game there was another game that was pretty unforgiving on xbox 360 called operation darkness . I always felt like it was a gem
The wiki was my best friend 😂
"... if you experiment, if you are a psychopath..."
Wow...
The video was already full of hyperbole, but I think that was the last sentence I've heard from this channel.
I can’t say I disagree with any of your points on this game. I too love this game, but by god can it be frustrating. Disappointingly, I have yet to complete the game despite having god only knows how many hours dumped into it. Yet to find a game like it though. Also, I miss the Chaos Rings games. They weren’t perfect, but man were they gems and some of the best high quality mobile games of there time with good darker stories.
combat is sorta like a jrpg TFT
The music SLAPS tho 😅
Absolutely. One of my favorite video game soundtracks of all time.
lol you had me laughing several times in this
I like this game a lot
This game is like Playing D&D but you don't know you play D&D (the randomness everywhere)
Says is amazing game and he loves it. Proceeds to complain about it and talk about how big of trash fire it is and how lacking in description everything is for 10 minutes 😂
Hey man that's just the general feel of it. I love the game but it doesn't love me. I try to talk my friends into playing it
This game is so trash. Welp, time to reply it for the 5th time!
sub earned
TLR is kinda Dark Souls from jrpg genre
one of the worst rpgs ever made. absolutely awful. 65 hours, just erased all saves and uninstalled. furthest ive ever made it in this garbage game. whoever designed this, i hope they never worked on a game after. what a terrible game.
