great video, just something to note about combat in this game. You mentioned about long range, and combat being primarily shooting guns from long distance. Honestly, you have to lose that style, early midgame, (on most characters) and commit to fast moving, high damage melee attacks, and running around the battlefield to evade enemy fire/ manip enemy ai (and pathing), while using healing items on wounded allies, and extensive looting enemy medpacks in order to win and make sure no one dies.
Damn, it's a real shame that it's an Xbox exclusive title. I really love the art style and character designs, they seem pretty similar to Ring of Red's.

A WWII strategy RPG? You have my attention, my friend. ;) That is definitely a unique combination to say the least! Vampires, werewolves, zombies, again, not something I'd see coming given the source material... Love it! The gameplay footage gives me an XCOM vibe, although I haven't played much of that series. I suppose the gun/long-ranged combat is what does it. It looks like this is a pretty cheap game to grab. I'll have to get it sometime soon. Great review! :)

Oh man I remember this game. I was having a lot of fun with it despite its flaws, until that whole perma-death thing stung me. Like you I lost characters because the game didn't tell me it has perma-death and I was just moving along, saving my game without even thinking about it. I had to have been a good ten hours in when it happened, too. Still that was awhile ago and maybe the game is worth another shot at this point. I remember just digging the WWII setting with supernatural elements a lot.

HansAlRachid I can’t really understand why the German government is so gung ho about censoring hitlers reign and WW2 I think everyone understands that the Germans themselves weren’t to blame and were lead by a man leading a radical group that was in power. I mean for Christ sake, they won’t even allow a video game in their country with the topic or anything like it in it. Meanwhile we over in other countries like US have games with our historical fuck ups on full display where you can even kill Americans while on an opposing side.
For me this game was SO MUCH fun. Yes, I had to take a moment to get used to it. Graphics are average and the camera is awful, that's a fact and not opinion. But regardless of these flaws I appreciated the strategy I had to use, think of my loadout to prevent my characters from being overloaded with useless gears and so forth... I think the cast is stellar. I mean Frank was a huge surprise. Jack and the professor were nice addition also. Max being an optional character was nice also, considering he is unique in the way that he's actually an enemy unit that you can recruit. Otherwise Nazis + Vampires + Zombies + Magic = One hell of a ride! Bonus, You actually take part in Operation Valkyrie. Tips for people who would want to start this game : - Search bodies. You can find items not yet available on them. Strong healing items and even rare or unique weapons. Bodies of both enemies AND NPC allies. - Tanks can trample your characters which result in instant death of said characters. They usually don't do so unless you are standing close to them. - If a character die you can revive them with Herbert. If you do not revive them before mission end it's perma death. - If Herbert is down you have NO WAY to revive characters. - The death of Edward, Jude, James and Cordelia = Game Over even if you have the ability to revive. - Keep your character light. At first Speed doesn't make that much of a difference. However around half point if you're characters are too heavy the enemies can double up on your own turns. - Think of each characters loadout. Why would you want to give a Handgun or an Assault Rifle to Cynthia? All of her skills use a Sniper Rifle so it's not worth giving her anything else. Aside maybe a grenade. - XP gains are proportional to damage inflicted. The more damage you deal on an attack, the more XP you gain so it can be worth it to overkill enemies. - Herbert can be slow to level. Since he's your only revive option most people will keep him in the back. From experience giving him a Bazooka without any ammo surplus and a shotgun is worth it. Start by firing the bazooka at the largest chunk of enemies you see (Throw in Enrage buff before hand if possible) to maximize damage dealt and thus XP gain. Without any ammo reload for the bazooka the game will ask if you want to discard the weapon. DO IT! This will lighten Herbert and then you can continue shooting people with the shotgun. - Shotgun have surprising range in this game and great power. They are limited to 2-3 copies all around however. - Later on, it's worth having some characters without ANY weapons and rely only on the character MS Skills. Cordelia is a prime exemple of this. Frank, Keith and Lewis are good candidate for this too. - Keith and James are the best characters to use Blood Plasma healing item. This item restore HP and MS. They both are tank characters and rely heavily on MS but not MS Skills. They have another ability that take up MS at a constant rate. - Did I say search bodies?

Sadly, Japanese devs seem to lack the business sense to see porting a game to steam is like free money. It costs next to no money to port a 360 game to pc and you stand to make extra money on a property which makes zero right now. It's a no lose situation, but they still won't do it.

I do know that the main character and his love interest we're standard anime tropes. I could help bit love the side characters. Frank Gough, Herbert and Cynthia were my favorites and I make tribute characters to them on X-Com. Something that always perplexed me on why the player didn't have the option to try to "save" Jude. I mean, him being a Vampire could have added to team composition since he was a Standard soldier in disguise. A real buff. By the way. Did you ever get Max Neuman? The hidden recruitable character? He was one of the Cyborgs that we fight against and he had color coded shoulder armor.
I've had this game now for over 6 years. It used to be dirt cheap on Amazon. I've only played a few minutes but it certainly looks like it is worth a run through. Just another game in the backlog right now. It's another one of the XBox 360 exclusives that got panned by PS3 RPG fans, but I think that a lot of that is about what you're looking for in your RPG games (I've loved lots of the 360 RPG exclusives). At least it's unique. That's probably what is so appealing about it.
I have very little experience with SRPGs having only played a couple Fire Emblem games and Valkyria Chronicles, but something about this game looks very appealing to me that I might be willing to put up with its infuriating difficulty.
Currently doing a replay of this game. Definitely one of my favorite tactical rpg games. It really requires you to work hard as a team not to get absolutely wrecked.
This is still on my list of games to play! A few people are saying they grabbed this on the Xbox Live store but I'm not seeing an option on the microsoft store other than a demo to download. I guess you'd need to be on a 360 to purchase. I really hope Atlas could make this backwards compatible for Xbox One, but seeing as it's so obscure and wasn't financially successful I can't see it happening.
This game is ON SALE on Xbox marketplace for 2.49 dlls, i am totally gonna get it, i never heard of this game before and i saw your review and now i am convinced, i really love the fire emblem series, valkyria chronicles, advance wars and XCOM so i think this is a game made for me.
Weirdly, a lot of the flaws you mention aren't the type that bother me a lot, though I have a sneaky suspicion this may have started development as a late-life PS2 title, it really has the "feel" of those. My love of quirk, SRPGs, and the novelty of playing very Japanese games on XBOX 360 are likely to land this game in my collection

I will admit this is an amazing game but there's one problem it's not compatible on Xbox One which means my Xbox One X won't be able to play it at all and that's not fair I really wanted to attack an army of Nazi vampire zombies or at least control them this sucks!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I was soo bummed that this never got a PAL release. They released the demo and then nothing happened. They even pulled the demo after a while. I think I still have it on my old 360 somewhere. =/
Flaws aside this is easily one of the best SRPGs of all time. Must play if you’re a fan of the genre. Stands far and above the cookie cutter SRPG experience.
That regret and guilt you feel about characters dying early is probably intentional game design. Part of war is survivor's guilt. Knowing a party member had an interesting life ahead of them if they lived is suppose to make you sad.
I think that's the the case. I have never owned a 360 so I never got a chance to play this game. A Japanese WW2 SRPG game with Nazi vampires for a western console and bland box art. Wonder why this game isn't well know...
Great work as usual. Here's a recommendation: Azure Dreams for the ps1. Dungeon crawler/town builder/ monster collection/ romance sim. I spent hours on this game, super tough deff give it a look.
Duuuuuuuuude that viewer is an angel. Protip: When you start out don't expect to leave the tower alive, just focus on leveling up your first monster. The game can be brutal at first.
HOLY SHIT! I did not expect this game to show up anywhere. I almost felt like no one has ever heard of the game before. This game is love. But for a game revolving around a war that has guns being the main weapon, guns are so useless. Worst than useless, they are a burden.

Some games just run so darn poorly, I remember playing PES 2008 on 360 and the framerate on replays and other things is insanely slow, and it looks no better than a PS2 game running at 720P. Optimisation is a big deal.
I was mostly thinking on Valkyria Chronicles while watching since that's a Strategy war game too (that allow full movement control) and I was really going for with this game I was going to look for it to play it............Then you told it me was Xbox 360 and I was like DAMMIT. Ya I don't have an Xbox and I'm out of luck to try this game. Guess I'll add it to the list of games I want to play but can't. The game look really cool though and I like the Idea of going against Nazi SS vampires. now if that had a guy in the unit that some out has a whip and calls himself Belmont then that would be cool.
I think a castlevaina srpg would be fucking incredible! As for the 360, keep an eye out, those things are getting pretty cheap on ebay. Last time I looked, you could find one for 80 bucks or so.
I wanted to like this game I really did but by the 5th time a panzer tank blew up on of my main characters in the 2nd turn and I had to load up my last save and watch a full cutscene start the mission and died all over again I knew I could never stick with this game
@@AvalancheReviews it was the one in the woods actually 😁 then once you beat the tanks they teleport In little remote control bombs which kill in a single hit and a APC. But yeah the game desperately needs a remake which gives the option to turn off permideath and let's the game carry on if a main characters are K.Oed they could just add a line of dialogue that all the main cast have supernatural healing and bring them back at the end of a level. And if they need them for a cutscene then program someone else to say there lines instead sure it is more work but jesus having 4 members of team charecters that must not be killed is so dam frustrating.
Great review as always, my man! :D An alternate universe in WW2 with a Wolf pack going against Nazi Vampires, very interesting!!! :D I'll admit, while I like the premise and the retro look of the game, the main protagonist Edward does seem like a character I'll have to put up with rather than naturally grow to love, similar to Tidus from "FFX" who I'm a bit forgiving towards but why do these protagonists have to be so childish and whiny? XD The tactical combat mechanic looks VERY challenging, something I'm not a huge fan of as the Story always comes 1st and last for me, but I'll give it a chance. ^.^ Besides, I have a huge affinity for Wolves so this looks to be a game I'll at the very least enjoy. :D
It's weird enough to warrant the cheap price, that's for sure. I think you'll get into the story. It does a good job of blending the fantasy elements into real events and it comes off as pretty serious.

JoJo had a vampire in one arc, Nazis in the other. But not this game, it lumps them together! That automatically makes it better than JoJo, and anyone who thinks otherwise is a BRRRRRRAKA MONOGA!!!

Honestly, I wish this game would come to PC. I played the demo a few times and liked it, but never got to give the full game a fair shake.
Sadly, Japanese devs seem to lack the business sense to see porting a game to steam is like free money. It costs next to no money to port a 360 game to pc and you stand to make extra money on a property which makes zero right now. It's a no lose situation, but they still won't do it.
@@AvalancheReviews Yeah. Shame. This game could have also had an okay modding community, fixing the problems it had, adding new things like maybe art changes for the generic units, stuff like that. Oh well, no point dwelling on what could have been I guess.
@@AvalancheReviews Success isn't that big of a company so it's most likely the labor into porting this would've outweighed their operation costs. It's easy to just put the blame on "business sense" when there's other factors that keep them from doing so.

I remember being sucked into the world of this game. I do know that the main character and his love interest we're standard anime tropes. I could help bit love the side characters.
Frank Gough, Herbert and Cynthia were my favorites and I make tribute characters to them on X-Com.
Something that always perplexed me on why the player didn't have the option to try to "save" Jude. I mean, him being a Vampire could have added to team composition since he was a Standard soldier in disguise. A real buff.
By the way. Did you ever get Max Neuman? The hidden recruitable character? He was one of the Cyborgs that we fight against and he had color coded shoulder armor.
I've had this game now for over 6 years. It used to be dirt cheap on Amazon. I've only played a few minutes but it certainly looks like it is worth a run through. Just another game in the backlog right now. It's another one of the XBox 360 exclusives that got panned by PS3 RPG fans, but I think that a lot of that is about what you're looking for in your RPG games (I've loved lots of the 360 RPG exclusives). At least it's unique. That's probably what is so appealing about it.
The 360 didn't have a lot of rpg exclusives, but almost all were pretty interesting for sure.

I have very little experience with SRPGs having only played a couple Fire Emblem games and Valkyria Chronicles, but something about this game looks very appealing to me that I might be willing to put up with its infuriating difficulty.
It's super unique, and for me, that made it all worth keeping up with. Let me know what you think, if you end up getting it.
Currently doing a replay of this game. Definitely one of my favorite tactical rpg games. It really requires you to work hard as a team not to get absolutely wrecked.

This is still on my list of games to play! A few people are saying they grabbed this on the Xbox Live store but I'm not seeing an option on the microsoft store other than a demo to download. I guess you'd need to be on a 360 to purchase. I really hope Atlas could make this backwards compatible for Xbox One, but seeing as it's so obscure and wasn't financially successful I can't see it happening.

This game is ON SALE on Xbox marketplace for 2.49 dlls, i am totally gonna get it, i never heard of this game before and i saw your review and now i am convinced, i really love the fire emblem series, valkyria chronicles, advance wars and XCOM so i think this is a game made for me.

Weirdly, a lot of the flaws you mention aren't the type that bother me a lot, though I have a sneaky suspicion this may have started development as a late-life PS2 title, it really has the "feel" of those. My love of quirk, SRPGs, and the novelty of playing very Japanese games on XBOX 360 are likely to land this game in my collection

I bought this game years ago.....never gotten to beat it. got to the final boss and it just nearly impossible to kill lol..IT just one weird game. I like it becuz it sorta like Valkyrie chronicle

I will admit this is an amazing game but there's one problem it's not compatible on Xbox One which means my Xbox One X won't be able to play it at all and that's not fair I really wanted to attack an army of Nazi vampire zombies or at least control them this sucks!!! 😭😭😭😭😭😭
I was soo bummed that this never got a PAL release. They released the demo and then nothing happened. They even pulled the demo after a while. I think I still have it on my old 360 somewhere. =/

Flaws aside this is easily one of the best SRPGs of all time. Must play if you’re a fan of the genre. Stands far and above the cookie cutter SRPG experience.

That regret and guilt you feel about characters dying early is probably intentional game design. Part of war is survivor's guilt. Knowing a party member had an interesting life ahead of them if they lived is suppose to make you sad.
If this was intentional like you're saying, it may be the most subtle and effective example of game design I can think of.
I think that's the the case. I have never owned a 360 so I never got a chance to play this game. A Japanese WW2 SRPG game with Nazi vampires for a western console and bland box art. Wonder why this game isn't well know...

Here's a recommendation: Azure Dreams for the ps1. Dungeon crawler/town builder/ monster collection/ romance sim. I spent hours on this game, super tough deff give it a look.

Protip: When you start out don't expect to leave the tower alive, just focus on leveling up your first monster. The game can be brutal at first.

This game is love. But for a game revolving around a war that has guns being the main weapon, guns are so useless. Worst than useless, they are a burden.
Watching this review makes me wonder why I did not buy Valkyria Chronicles yet. :(

Some games just run so darn poorly, I remember playing PES 2008 on 360 and the framerate on replays and other things is insanely slow, and it looks no better than a PS2 game running at 720P. Optimisation is a big deal.

I was mostly thinking on Valkyria Chronicles while watching since that's a Strategy war game too (that allow full movement control) and I was really going for with this game I was going to look for it to play it............Then you told it me was Xbox 360 and I was like DAMMIT. Ya I don't have an Xbox and I'm out of luck to try this game. Guess I'll add it to the list of games I want to play but can't. The game look really cool though and I like the Idea of going against Nazi SS vampires. now if that had a guy in the unit that some out has a whip and calls himself Belmont then that would be cool.
I think a castlevaina srpg would be fucking incredible! As for the 360, keep an eye out, those things are getting pretty cheap on ebay. Last time I looked, you could find one for 80 bucks or so.

I wanted to like this game I really did but by the 5th time a panzer tank blew up on of my main characters in the 2nd turn and I had to load up my last save and watch a full cutscene start the mission and died all over again I knew I could never stick with this game

@@AvalancheReviews it was the one in the woods actually 😁 then once you beat the tanks they teleport In little remote control bombs which kill in a single hit and a APC.
But yeah the game desperately needs a remake which gives the option to turn off permideath and let's the game carry on if a main characters are K.Oed they could just add a line of dialogue that all the main cast have supernatural healing and bring them back at the end of a level. And if they need them for a cutscene then program someone else to say there lines instead sure it is more work but jesus having 4 members of team charecters that must not be killed is so dam frustrating.

Great review as always, my man! :D An alternate universe in WW2 with a Wolf pack going against Nazi Vampires, very interesting!!! :D I'll admit, while I like the premise and the retro look of the game, the main protagonist Edward does seem like a character I'll have to put up with rather than naturally grow to love, similar to Tidus from "FFX" who I'm a bit forgiving towards but why do these protagonists have to be so childish and whiny? XD The tactical combat mechanic looks VERY challenging, something I'm not a huge fan of as the Story always comes 1st and last for me, but I'll give it a chance. ^.^ Besides, I have a huge affinity for Wolves so this looks to be a game I'll at the very least enjoy. :D
It's weird enough to warrant the cheap price, that's for sure. I think you'll get into the story. It does a good job of blending the fantasy elements into real events and it comes off as pretty serious.

below it are ones without buildings and resources
party crpg < rpg with tactical elements < tactical game < tactical wargame
It was originally influenced by early pc strategy games, but it's a more simplified, watered down ver of those types of games nowadays.

there are not such strategies. and without buildings and resource gathering it isn't in the scope of strategies. maybe some kind of a tactics (and probably just a party crpg without time units, weight, modes, aim), but totally not a strategy
