Daniel Lanois' ’70s Sho Bud LDG 10-String Pedal Steel Guitar

  • Premier Guitar met with famed producer and musician Daniel Lanois before his show at City Winery in Nashville. Lanois, known primarily for making lush-sounding records with cavernous reverb and moody delay, reveals his surprisingly simple guitar rig.
    It’s incredibly surprising that Lanois tours with just two instruments: an early ’70s Sho-Bud LDG 10-string pedal steel guitar and a 1953 Gibson Les Paul goldtop. To help with the inherent buzz that comes with single-coil pickups, Lanois replaced the original pickup in the Sho-Bud with a George L E-66 humbucker. Lanois uses a slightly altered version of the standard E9 setup and tweaks the tuning of the top strings for specific songs.

    Weird way of playing BUT the pedal steel is a versatile instrument, and it can easily fit in with other genres of music with imagination like this. Pete Drake experimented with distort, growling and other sounds way back in the late 60s, and tried to promote the steel guitar into other types of music. If he hadn't died at just 56 yrs of age Im sure he would have succeeded, he was ahead of his time by a long way. He used to make the steel guitar sound like a string section by detuning two mixed tracks . He always said he was the cheapest string section in Nashville.

      @user-nu7kk4uw6k yes, Pete also released many solo albums, giving many musicians and background singers a lot of work. The Anita Kerr Singers was one such group.
      He employed Paul Franklin in his studio and Paul's wife in the office. Pete Drake is a legend and richly deserves his place in the musicians hall of fame. He helped many ambitious young musicians, and it was a very sad day when he passed at such a young age.

    following two paths in learning PSG: the “standard” country licks and feel for covers, and then experimenting with tones and shapes more in an avant- or atmospheric way like Lanois does here. Does anyone else get a major Unforgettable Fire vibe here?

    Luv this magician and the content ...
    It amazes me that can have an electric stringed instrument turned up that loud without hearing any feedback noise or buzzing. Does anyone know if it's just good volume control or is it the gear?

    Playing in experimental tunings as well as changing tuning on the fly mid set (without using a second neck or instrument), is IMO what separates the men from the boys on pedal steel, not to mention his reasoning behind everything is really nice. If I get a volume pedal, I'm going for an optical. All my guitars with some age on them have pots that need cleaning/replacing.

    • @SS_Psyops
      @SS_Psyops 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Honestly tho everything on steel was an experimental tuning. Hell… they were family secrets in Hawaii for decades that they guarded dearly between generations. Also, many tunings require different gauges or using both in 1 song hence the double neck. Idk what separates people but I can guarantee any of the Nashville guys who play those 6’s and 9’s can do all that too. Any pedal tuning you find has unisons, that’s not special, but usually they’re spaced out to allow lines to be employed differently in all positions opening up new options due to the limitation of a bar instead of multiple fingers. Lanois has made a career and name for himself which is awesome and there were some early records I thought were cool but for me the limitation he imposed on himself limits the scope of his writing significantly. I really wish he would open it up and give some of the other things a shot, I think he would be even better.

    Daniel got fame with Joshua Tree album production which springboarded him to do work on Sling Blade. Now there's every Tom,Dick and Harry that think they can do ambient sounds for movie scores on pedal steel. UckF Me. Wish they would actually learn how to play pedal steel. Poseurs.
