I can never get tired of Daniel talking about music.
I had the absolute honour of meeting Mr Lanois in a professional setting, in the 80s. He was an absolute Gentleman, incredibly kind and generous with his knowledge....It's great to see these two chatting, and sharing it with us....
I`m so glad Rick is archiving these incredible producers and artists. These interviews are truly insightful.
feel the same, could watch and listen for hours to stuff like this
Ha nice to know that my bro Pavel was filming!!! A great luthier and craftsman in his own right. Happy to say I spent a lot of great times here in this studio and helped Dan organize, made places to hang guitars, cables, etc. Also, helped with lighting and getting special bulbs for him...we created a mood and a vibe...even saged it...which I believe brought good mojo to the studio...and then came Here Is What Is, amongst other amazing recordings recorded, produced and mixed...too numerous to mention, with a steady flow of some of the greatest musicians of our lifetimes, including Robert Plant and Neil Young...
What a beautiful thing he said at the end. Soulful
What a great and inspiring person. So humble as he should be. He does not take anything for granted. When he tells Rick to call him, he means it. He will answer the phone, return a message, and give Rick time to make him feel like he is important. That is what it means to be a good person and a Canadian. Humble, Honest, Respectful, and true to one's self.
Totally agree: Canadians can have tremendous levels of openness and respect
Daniel Lanois is considered a Canadian God for us musician! As a French Canadian myself, I’m a huge fan of all Dan’s work and never miss a show when he comes to London. The Aeolian hall have never sounded better whenever he performs there!
Oh my God amazing. I grew up a minute or two from the house where Grant Ave. studios in Hamilton, Ontario came into being. Never realised until many later years all this magic was happening there. The full interview was great - Daniel Lanois is a Canadian hero! What a humble genius! "Call me anytime" - what a great man.
Too cool! I recently took the helm as head producer/engineer at Grant Ave Studio. Next time you're back in the 'hood feel free to drop by. Would love to show you around, and hear stories from those early days!!
Hey, just wanted to say i grew up on Steven St. in Hamilton. I had no idea that these amazing musicians were just two blocks away from me.
Cues up music and in 2 seconds you know it is a Daniel Lanois production. Amazing.
A man in his element gracious & inviting. Loved Daniel Thanking @rickbeato for taking an interest in his work total class.
This guy is a genuine magician.
His magical touch has been on so many masterful recordings, incredible taste and appreciation for the ambient.
All of my favorite musicians revere this man’s brilliance 💪🏼
Man, wow, that second track he shared is gorgeous! I wish the radio stations played stuff like that these days.
As a Dylan freak, Time Out of Mind is by far my favorite sounding Dylan album. So cool to see the machines they fed the soul through to make it!
Do you catch the name of the artist? Mikah? Michael?
@@armandisalas4218 Micah Nelson, Willie's son
True, it sounds great even to people who don’t like Dylan at all!
Daniel has always been an inspiration to me both on a musical and human level, always committed to the work involved in getting the desired result.
Wow, what an inspiring man. Isn't it amazing that often the most inspiring of people are hugely and genuinely interested in other people and are actually taking inspiration from everything and everyone around them. My latest quote that I'm trying to keep in the front of my mind is "Don't be judgmental, be curious" and I can imagine Daniel being exactly that.
Great quote.
I watched the full interview on Rick's other channel. Daniel Lanois just blows me away. That man is deep and profound. I love the second track he played. I will buy the album. Any idea when it will be released?
I would love to hear it too man, crazy beautiful stuff
What a treat. Down the spiral stairs to a dream studio (pultec, neve) and hvac underneath to keep the desk cool 2:08 ... pragmatic artist.
Amazing! Daniel is an amazing artist! I remember his concert with Black Dub in Poland! Great experience! And all those great works for U2, Peter Gabriel, Robbie Robertson... Love those landscapes and climates.
What a beautiful man. I love his work. Calm and cool and what he’s done for the likes of Dylan and U2 simply amazing and totally unique.
The full interview is fantastic, as they all are. 🤘
Music is woven into his DNA. He is a complete musical being. Just astounding.
Oohh man! What a meet! Such a intimate character and he remains like that in concert! A giant in the whole industry and he is from here, Québec! 🤩🤩🤩
Lovely legend. True, honest, humble human being. Nothing but love for music and art in that basement.
Ray Davies wants a 100% split on that second song...but jeez, what a studio. Midas Heritage? Danial Lanois? Being fed by a BCM 10 and an API? That's other world crazy. This is Uli Behringer's wet dream.
Which Ray Davies song? Oh, Lola. Took me a second.
Not one Midas - two
Hah
Grab a Midas live console now while they're still relatively unknown and cheap, I totally see them becoming the next 'must have' bit of classic analog gear.
@@DogwoodDags I remember an article from Sound on Sound ages ago, maybe 15 years or so, about Midas Heritage being just about the best bang for buck recording front end if you're looking for many inputs at recording and mixdown. Even back then, their Mic Pres were well spoken of.
I am surprised to see how this person keeps soul of a curious kid, and play us his works in progress without hesitation, it just makes me feel like being one of his friends. Great. I have been listening to Acadie and For the Beauty of Wynona for years
Saw him live once, playing that lapsteel guitar and it sounded so out of this world, but now hearing him play on piano is just mesmerizing
This is also a conversation between two people with lots of charisma. That's why artists feel comfortable around them. Great to watch and learn.
For all of his success he seems like a very down to earth person. You can tell he was born to be an engineer. He just gets it
Mr. Lanois is a multitalented man. It is like looking in to the mind of a genius.
Im a musician too and multi talent
Two great guys sharing their love of music and recording, inspiring stuff.
that was brilliant, that almost jungle / drum n bass track was magic!
Great interview Rick! Thank you for all your work making these videos.
To any new fans of Lanois' and young producers here: take the time to read his biographical book titled, Soul Mining. So many incredible musical stories in it, all the way from his early childhood to setting up his first studio to record a lot of Jamaican bands in Canada, to working with so amazing renowned artists in his career and so many amazing musical adventures he had lived, etc... You may even discover "new" music and great artists you may not know that he mentions. And yes, he also talks often about studio gear and techy stuff we all love :) Anyway, there's simply so much to learn about his approach towards making and producing soulful music, and about living a good musical life. You will feel inspired after reading his book ;) Cheers.
I closed my eyes and heard David Bowie singing over this track, it was wonderful. Love your work Daniel.
Beautiful. Can't wait for those gorgeous hypnotic tracks to see the light of day. I so miss working on Radar II, the speed and efficiency is unbeatable. Amazing convertors too; in the late 90s Hugh Padgham rented the studio I was working in and he tracked through Radar (with a rack of Neve 1081s and 1064s on the front end) before letting Pro Tools in on the action through a digital input.
Hell yeah, my Midas console is the glowing heart of my little studio, along with the Studers and Otari tape recorders, it's like going to analog heaven every day. The Lanois sound is totally recognisable against today's generic digital box productions. ❤❤❤
1:50 a dry signal recorded in a dense room into Neve Mic Pre's from the 70's into the fantastique sounding Midas Heritage 4000 - Mr. Lanois got style 🎩
"A little under-lit" is an enormous understatement. I was in Daniel's house in around 2003 or 2004 and it was like a haunted house. The guy showing me around, Dylan I think, had to use a flashlight even with the lights on.
You've been in Daniel's house and all you say about that is the ambient lighting was super dim?!... Come on!!! We wanna know more! lol
@@jas_bataille it's a long, boring story. In the early 2000s I was looking for a wurlitzer piano for my studio. There was an add on Craigslist with two for sale. I reached out, got an address and used mapquest to find it. The seller described the gate I should look for and it was easy to find. I arrived in the early twilight but the large home was surrounded my trees so it was pretty dark when I parked near the walkway to the front stairs.
I was met at the front door by someone named Dylan (I think) with a flashlight in his hand. When he invited me in it was dark in the entry even with the lights on. We turned left into the living room, also dark, where there was a pretty large collection of equipment that was apparently also for sale. By this time I was suspecting that I was in some famous musician's house but nothing was a giveaway as to who. I was checking out this tube wurlitzer and in the darkness noticed on the wall behind it wss a painting. It was "the knife" from the cover of For the Beauty of Winona. I asked if this was Daniel Lanois' house. He confirmed. At that point it was easier to understand the equipment.
I was up at that house a few times while eventually buying two wurlitzers and an AC30. The AC30 was blown up and they were considering a repair before selling it if the estimate was reasonable. For whatever reason it didn't sell and supposedly Dan approved selling it to me very cheaply. I repaired it myself for about $10 in parts and some wire. Ironically, the mvp was the last thing I bought because no one else did, a musitronic wurlitzer student model. It has superb action and sound. Ironically, I've seen those musitronic wurlitzers in a bunch of big rooms in Nashville.
Across those visits I did get to see a bit of the ground floor and usually parked by what I believe is the entrance to the studio in the basement. I had clients that dined and smoked with Dan at his house. I have never met him.
This was extraordinary. Thank you for making it happen. ❤
amazing glimpse into the creative process and genius of DL - thank you to you both
Daniel we love you ! Happy to see you ! ❤❤😊
The man got taste, this is so organic and so beautifully arrenged soulfood!
I always associate his name with U2. He produced or co-produced several U2 albums, including the iconic, timeless THE JOSHUA TREE...the atmospheric crest in "WHERE THE STREETS HAVE NO NAME" is simply mindblowing!
I've read that he also produced "SO" by Peter Gabriel... bow-bow down to him, he gets my thumbs up as a producer 👍
Yeah literally just those two alone. Two of the greatest albums ever recorded!
@@collinjamesguitar yeah, hands down. He was literally in the zone then! When great artists match greats producers is absolutely amazing! Masterpieces‼️👌
You can tell how much he just loves music deeply.
Priceless vignettes, Rick.
Also, so close to the Edge.
"All my lenses..." Classic and perfect. 1:58
genius at work ....amazing ......the atmospheres stuff wow
So reassuring to see one of the most inspiring producers using many simple processes in a comfortable room without heartless pads, sound buffers and all other technical filler. Gives hope to a poor sap such as myself.
Wow. This is precious for every generation.
So neat information on the console, the Midas Heritage 4000 only had around 60 of them ever made, the Heritage 3000 was Midas' most popular in sales ever. The 4000 was so rare that I have never seen one outside of pictures, and promotional material from Midas back in the day, and now video. Very cool piece. I had a Midas Legend 3000 from the same era in my studio for over a decade and I have to say that Midas consoles from the time are some of the best desks ever made.
Micah Nelson is so great. Excited for the final tracks.
Wow, that stuff he was playing on piano was amazing and it sounded amazing with the tea towels
jeez wow! Rick! i think about daniel lanois and keith jarrett. These two souls from different universes both making the most extrorinary music and you get to talk to them and we get to listen. just fantastic!
Dang, Daniel got some dark and groovy tunes. I really dig em. What a cool basement studio too. sounds good in there.
He is an artist in the truest sense of the word.
He really shared more with you than he has with almost anyone else.
Another belter, well done Rick!
Please Daniel. Produce the next album with Depeche Mode. It was meant to be.
What an inspiration this guy!!!!
Rick gets into the inner sanctum!
Wow! Great video. I sometimes think Lanois is overdoing it, over the top, a bit full of himself, but in reality he is just a true musician, a great artist, a genius producer and and amazing human being.
He produced "Wrecking Ball" with Emmylou Harris, and Robbie Robertson's solo album. Incredible stuff. 🥰
Wrecking Ball is an amazing record. Stunning,
Fantastic interview, I love the techno geek discussion and the mutual respect. Thank you.
What a beautiful soul. He played in my town in September and I F@CKIN missed it. I got the date mixed up. Totally kicked myself for that!!!!
Keep coming back to this clip to listen to that second Nelson track, can't wait for that to be released.
Danny is so awesome, understated genius.
I love how filmic his records are.
Fucking fantastic, Rick! Hearing brand new music not yet done! Thank you! Love his sound and seeing all the cool analog, bro!!!! Bossest! ❤🎉😊
Awesome vid. The dude is so inspiring.
I'd love to hear more from the second tune he played.
Damn. Can't wait for this new Lanois to come out....
Focus on the music, which I feel is amazing, is key. Great learning to be gleaned here.
He might be the coolest guy ever
Wow! Inspiration! Just incredible stuff.
J'adore le travail de Daniel Lanois !
When I think of Producers Daniel Lanois is in a very special group of Producers that includes: George Martin, Quincy Jones, David Foster, Rick Rubin, Mutt Lang, Ken Scott, Glynn Johns, Andrew Scheps, Butch Vig, and Al Schmitt. This group of producers represents an exceptional commitment to the art of recording and talent to find the right song and tailor it to the artist. These producers work hard to achieve excellence in everything they do and it shows.
Loved all of this and the rest of the interview that's up. ❤😊
The words and works of a genius!
3:33 ''a blue chord'' my thoughts exactly
I saw him live in London in 1990. Good times.
The many ways I love this 🔥
Nice person Mr Daniel
I met him after a show and signed my record .
Thank you! This is so valuable!!!
What a document! Lanois is a shaman. Such a spiritual gentleman. So much subtlety in his works, minute attention to detail, yet the quality is strikingly obvious. He made So. Come on… 😅
This is great content. Seeing the real deal in real time.
I had the good fortune to see Daniel playing with Blackie and the Rodeo kings at this summer's Blues Fest in Ottawa while visiting there this summer. As a huge fan of Stephen Fearing I see he is gearing up to record a new album with a notable Producer. Could it be Daniel?
Tons of knowledge on this channel. From the early days to recent tech.
Really nice. Unfinished and already quite intriguing. Great episode! 😎🤓
a breathing gem
Daniel Lanois, notre Gilles Villeneuve de la sono! 🙂 Saluts du Québec!
Interesting, but extremely esoteric. Lots to learn.
Who is this dude? , must be some kind of genius.
oh man... loved watching this. :)
what a treat!
Legend
Wow. What a cool guy.
Hey Rick real big fan of your videos and your insight in to music production and theory. One band i would love you to mention or dig into a real great great from the 70's is 'bread' such beautiful melodys and chord progressions. Thank you for all that you do. Steve from Dublin Ireland
Epic! Great video Rick!
Worked with Daniel on Scott Wieland’s solo record at The Village Recorder
I only heard a little of the music project and I don't actually know who Mica is, but I want to buy that album when it comes out!
Yes yes yes!!!
Incredible
