The way he plays that steel guitar so beautifully and smoothly, makes it seem like the guitar is a sentient being on its own and is howling its story. 5th time I’m watching this now, stunned every time.
if you are wondering, don't be skeptical when he starts calling out the notes, just keep watching. this isn't a jam in the classical sense: it's his vision for what the sound is going to be, so he is acting as conductor. the way he uses the console halfway through is pretty slick.
I was skeptical and didn't really know what to expect. This guy at work hands me a disk and says "listen to this"...so I did and I got hooked pretty quickly. Love the creative artistry and both the melodic and harmonic structure of this work is amazing. It's like the "music of the spheres". I had an incredible conscious OBE soon after listening to "Goodbye to Language".
Daniel Lanois music is so interesting and I believe he has reached the highest level.. Hard for me to explain but It sounds like the Canadian forest, the steel towns, the bayous, the deserts. It’s a landscape that triggers emotions and it’s a genre per se. To make a comparison when I listen to some jazz records I see the hustle and bustle of NYC, the streets the lights of a town that never sleeps. 🙏
Hahaha! Just finished watching & listening to this. Like how u concluded by saying , “it’s kind of hard to do while drinking”…🤣 U &I were at one point going to grab a drink one evening while in Canada. It was late, but we talked for a bit without having one. Know u like a Scotch or whiskey from time to time, especially when with your pal Rocco! Although I’d have liked for us to speak longer, I was very tired after seeing you & the band. Proud to say, “I’ve pulled back from the sauce since the Canadian trip. Have lost 80lbs.since we last bumped into one another last yr. Next we meet, u get your whiskey neet & I’ll have a Shirley Temple. ; )
Pure magic in that studio. So inspiring to watch this video. The sounds triggered here. The movements of the musicians. The stirring emotions from the strings of that steel pedal guitar. This unfolding beauty. It's intensely inspiring. Daniel Lanois rocks! Thanks so much for this one!
Wasn't that aware of this guy until I watched a few Eno things on you tube recently. I love slide and steel guitar, but also electronic "treatments" to use an Eno-ism. Steel guitar is an instrument I want to try. I used to have a big bunch of reverbs and tape echos with assorted guitar pedals, and the sounds you can get with such simple (compared with modern stuff) equipment, are remarkable. The very simple device on steel guitar that makes a big difference, is the volume pedal. Very nice stuff.
I’ve been devouring his ambient albums with Brian Eno. Such an interesting sensibility built on the infinite tone and harmony generator that is the pedal steel.
I was just playing Goodbye To Language here at home, and earlier in the day, Apollo, too, when I found this... "Yeah Man." (7:28) Quite !! And Rocco The Rock - cool! The dudes are so chilled - nice. So glad I found them both.
Is that Dan & Rocco?! Just stumbled onto this. Soundin’ smooth guys! Met Rocco yrs ago. Told him to tell DL to call friend who owns venue where Chuck Berry played. Thought D would like to play there. Had no idea if RD would pass along info.? He did! & couple yrs. later found out Daniel played there! Hahaha! Gotta laugh at myself! Only I would miss the show! 😂 Pray one day to see both DL’s studio(s) n Canada & his studio n Malibu, CA. On a lark I’ve gotten to meet quite a few of the musicians DL has worked with/for. So, hope it’s n the stars to see his studio(s) & maybe participate in making some sound(s) with him… Maybe I could pull Belew, Levin & Vai into the mix? Just took photographs of that show “Three Of A Perfect Pair” that the guys r playing on current tour. My dream is to see the “conductor” @ work & play(-pun intended). Or Just keep it simple DL, Rocco & moi n studio. Guys & Dolls who enjoy this school of music, check out Scott Sutton. He’s out of Chicago. Great musician & such a nice person. Happy Holidays! & Blessings all around! DL if u happen to read this, kindly tell Trixie(Tammy), Trixie told me her real name when we met at SPACE (Evanston, Il)yrs ago. & asked me to contact her. Have not had a chance, but will at some point. Anyway, I don’t do social media & have been beyond busy. Have been wondering how she is doing? Also, was thinking about Brian & hope he is doing well. Love your harmonies Dan, Jimmy & Germaine!!! Working with electricity & pairing instruments to find sprit-like sound is sublime! I sincerely can & do appreciate it. However, having had a grandfather who was a true MASTER of the guitar , he did not believe the instrument should never be plugged in to electricity, thinking it would harm the sound of the actual instrument. He was firm about this. Too, he was friends with Segovia who felt same. I understand their line of thought. However, when instrument(s) are plugged in, with the right “Conductor-pun intended) , it can reach the gods! YOU DO THAT DANIEL EVERY TIME! Thank you for that. As you wrote as you signed your book to me yrs ago, I’ll send one back to you, Rocco, Jimmy, Brian, Germaine & Tammy, You signed your name & Added a BIG “X”: So, back @ you mon ami!!!
Very very cool. My co-worker turned me on to this disc "Goodbye to Language" and at first I was thinking "oh great..more New Age atmospherics". Then as the music progressed, I was drawn in...almost hypnotically. Does this music contain hidden binaural beats that can induce altered states of consciousness? Anyway, I love this and am listening to it over and over again. There is a lot going on here and it is very moving. The melodic structure ropes you in and transports you in to the core of the record. Amazing work! I had a conscious OBE after listening to this music for 2 hours. I'm a guitarist and amateur composer and producer.and been playing guitar and keys for 40 years...and want to jam with Lanois and Deluca!
that sound is so beautiful omg! would never thing someone looking like that would come out with a sound like that. amaaazzzing stuff though regardless!
I wonder what that thin, little taped on stick Daniel flicks with his right thumb is? Is that a digital “clicker” that provides some sort of marker on the audio track?
Check out his tiny desk concerts live performance on youtube as well or whatever it's called. That one blew me away. Calling out the notes is a little different, still classic Lanois sound though, what with the slidey steel guitar and such. Amazing producer and musician. One of my all time favorite artists. His latest lp Flesh and Machine is a solid album too imo.
+yossarian1633 actually solid is prob not an apt description, more liquid if anything lol. Iceland and Opera my 2 favorite tracks that come to mind, but it's good throughout if you enjoy his sound.
I'm wondering if it may be triggering a Freeze or shimmer or something. I do the same on and off constantly with my foot on my Infinite Sustain and HoF pedals as I play my guitar.
An e-bow is an effect that is held in the palm of the hand. If Daniel had been using one it would be very evident. BTW a console slide guitar doesn't need an e-bow as it has more than ample sustainnnnnnnn and the volume envelope is done via foot pedal.
Its the EHX Freeze Pedal. He's built a small remote for the foot switch of the pedal and attached to the pedal steel. The Freeze samples small pieces of audio - kind of like a hod pedal on a piano.
Haven't found the answer to this below, so if you know: What's the steel pedal switch that he touches every now with his right thumb and then beside the lap steel? What is it for?
I'm thinking a Freeze or shimmer or something. I do the same with my foot on my Infinite Sustain and HoF pedals - on and off constantly as I play my guitar.
Any idea what that little thumb trigger he uses is? Taped on with blue tape? I've seen him play this guitar so many times, but I've never seen him use what looks like a thumb trigger.
That grooving dude is Dan's right hand man at the board, Wayne Lorenz. I have been looking for him for a long time and there he is! Hey Wayne! Thanks FACT guys for including him!
Both he and the other guy (Rocco Deluca) wrote and played in the score. Rocco has incredible diversity in his stuff. He's a very gifted writer and performer. Check him out.
Terrence Houlahan Americana is a genre of music that is both a fusion and umbrella term for groups that play folk, bluegrass, country, rock, gospel and other similar styles originally developed in the States. It doesn't necessarily mean the artist is Canadian.
I love all the natural light. Not a screen in sight. What a lovely, warm, and inspiring space! It must be a joy to create there.

he isn't "using" the console.. he's playing it like an instrument...
;-)

No revelation, thats kinda obvious.
This is amazing audio wizardry.
Wow, his use of the mixer as a dubbing tools is amazing. Channeling Lee Perry, King Tubby techniques and completely taking it to another place.
Him and Eno together! A match made in heaven
With the amazing rocco deluca too ❤️💙💜💖💚♥️🎵🎶🎼 xxx

Daniel's movements are very soothing, and obviously it fits his music perfectly

Awesome to watch the process and the music is hauntingly beautiful.
Awesome Musician(s).
Great director. Really nice work FACT mag.

Those vintage Neve consoles..... magic stuff

This is the guy who played the guitar in Deep Blue Day by Brian Eno.
This is Daniel Lanois
This is the guy along with Brian Eno who produced many albums by U2, most notably The Joshua Tree.
Wonderful !
that sound is so beautiful omg! would never thing someone looking like that would come out with a sound like that. amaaazzzing stuff though regardless!
Look at images of him with his long hair and bandana back in the day and you'll understand... :)
Wow, that’s prejudice…
What is he clicking with his right thumb on the pedal steel?
an Electro-Harmonix Freeze effect
I wonder what that thin, little taped on stick Daniel flicks with his right thumb is? Is that a digital “clicker” that provides some sort of marker on the audio track?
It’s a freeze pedal with that stick wired to it
Really cool video! I'm just curious what was on Dan's hat that he had to cover it up with tape
Yes 👍🙏
stunning!

Anybody know, with certainty, the exact gear used to create the sound starting @ 2:11? The exact model?
What's the switch that he touches every now and then beside the lap steel? What is it for?
Technisubs See comments above where this is answered.
I'm wondering if it may be triggering a Freeze or shimmer or something. I do the same on and off constantly with my foot on my Infinite Sustain and HoF pedals as I play my guitar.
This guy's a magician...
so good!
What’s the right thumb clickey thing on Daniels slide guitar?
lol at the guy lighting up! 4:37
That guy is the brilliant rocco deluca xxx
Hermosa musica. Sigan creando sonidos espaciales.
Roast a hog leg when the mix starts. Ace!
What does that little thing do that he is hitting with his right thump while playing steel guitar?
It might be to do with the sampling - like bookmarking different bars/ parts in the performance? Would like to know too ;)
What about some kind of cc thingie to trigger delays etc?
In any case this stuff is just føken insåne... Daniel is true Meister of the studio....
could also be something like an ebow?
An e-bow is an effect that is held in the palm of the hand. If Daniel had been using one it would be very evident. BTW a console slide guitar doesn't need an e-bow as it has more than ample sustainnnnnnnn and the volume envelope is done via foot pedal.

In his studio the mixing console is a musical instrument as much as a pedal steel guitar is.
Someone please tell me what the little stick is he keeps hitting with his right thumb, I must know!
lol.. Dude burns one for the mix..
What does he keep tapping with his thumb of his strumming hand?
Haven't found the answer to this below, so if you know: What's the steel pedal switch that he touches every now with his right thumb and then beside the lap steel? What is it for?
My guess is switching the pickups?
I'm thinking a Freeze or shimmer or something. I do the same with my foot on my Infinite Sustain and HoF pedals - on and off constantly as I play my guitar.

Oh, they can try, but they'll never replace THIS MAN with a plug-in.
Whats the little switch he keeps flicking ?
DOPE!!!
what is that thing he jeeps clicking??
oh yeah this is the good shit
Holy sh**
anybody noticed his cap front covered with a tape? :)
Gonna need 3 Neve consoles, boys.
When did Lanois become a biker?
Genius
Awesome climate
What does Daniel keep thumbing that thin piece with his right thumb?
look up sonho durado by him its his best peice i think...
i love how he has to tape over his hats logo
so fasenating

Lanois loves some scrape guitar.

@@jeffw2004 i fell down the spiral stairs at his Mansion in LA !!! lol its was terrible lol
who is the other guitarist?
Rocco Deluca.
Check out the similar work of steel pedal player Bill Stafford.
was this tune in Red Dead Redemption?
No it wasn't, but Daniel Lanois is the producer of the RDR2's soundtrack, so clearly we can hear some similarities!
Both he and the other guy (Rocco Deluca) wrote and played in the score.
Rocco has incredible diversity in his stuff. He's a very gifted writer and performer. Check him out.

Wonderful! (Apart from that annoying alarm sound - totally unnecessary imo)
Wow, that pedal steel is about is about as nice as it gets. Prob $25k
Nah, a Sho-Bud LDG like that can be had for around $2,000 or so. They are nice guitars. I’ve owned 4 of them.
bad rythm track. really bad. but magic steel guitar
well i guess we all have our opinions. by no means necessary is the rhythm track bad. it adds a certain vibe to the music.
A little loud in the mix sure but like the man said it gives it that skippety pulse! Top stuff!
Amazing !
