When Forrest asks, "Is he smart, or is he..." my heart falls through the floor, every single time I've seen that scene. Forrest is very aware of his disability, and knows how hard its made his life.
It's amazing....every time that scene comes up, there's someone cutting onions right next to me.
Hanks says so many simple lines in the movie and delivers them.in a way that tears at your soul. He can even make "And that's all I got say about that" drip with emotion.

Yeah, I don't think Hannah noticed what Forrest was saying right then, but that "Is he smart ..." hit Ash like a ton of bricks. One of the most powerful lines in the movie.
Me too man. That line gets me every time.
I have a special needs son. He is non-verbal, neurodivergent, and requires a lot of help with daily tasks like food, dress, and toileting. He is also the absolute sweetest, most affectionate little boy you will ever meet. This movie always made my heart twinge a bit, but now that I see my son’s innocence and light in Forrest, I just can’t watch the whole thing anymore. It absolutely shreds me. Wonderful reaction as always, guys. Thanks for sharing.
The ironic thing is Jenny told Forrest he doesn't know what love is, yet she doesn't know what love is, her only example of love as a child was from her abusive father, so thats why she always ran from Forrest who told her he loved her, and only after having a baby did she understand what real love was.
Irony is that Forrest always exhibits some sort of unconditional love (or empathy or kindness) to everyone. Jenny sought love as that *one* ends of the means, but Forrest saw love as a means and probably without an end. He just did it. Jenny is an example of all people. Seeking a true single outlet of love, it Forrest gave it to all, but saved a little extra for Jenny
If forrest wouldve just hit her with a classic “no u” don’t understand. Wouldve had her in shambles

I love how Jenny tells Forrest he doesn’t know what love is. When if you think about the trauma she went through she was the one that didn’t know what love is.
Exactly. Forrest had a totally opposite upbringing from Jenny. He knew what real love was the entire time because his mama truly loved him. Jenny’s father didn’t love her (or at least, definitely not the way he should’ve).

Unfortunately Jenny never replied to his letters in the army.. they were labeled “return to sender” which in America usually means it was the wrong address.. at the current time Jenny had no address and was going house to house with whoever she was “friends” with :(

@@Phoenixdark1 I don’t think the USPS uses that stamp anymore anyway, so a few young Americans I saw reacting to this missed it as well. Its just a sec, but if you freeze frame it, you can see the ‘return to sender,’ stamp they use to use before the bright yellow stamp they use now.

I loved the LT Dan relationship too. Especially when he got mad at the girl for calling him stupid. Somewhere deep down he appreciated Forest and respected him as a person and ended up loving him as a brother. I love my military friends and this relationship was a notch up from that.

Obligatory mention of all the amazing work Gary Sinise (Lt. Dan) has, and continues to, do for veterans…that man is a gem 🙂
I loved their relationship because they didn't really get on great at the start, but it blossomed into something beautiful. It made it feel more genuine for me. Like if they'd got along from the start it could have been fake or shallow or whatever, but the fact that Dan was angry with him to begin with but grew to love him, it made it feel more genuine and real.

Hannah, you helped me under the Jenny character. I was so angry at how she treated Forrest, but you stated Jenny is running from her thoughts, it all fell into place with her character for me. Awesome.

@H V I used to feel the same way, and still do sometimes. Ash can be loud and obnoxious. But he kinda grows on ya. At least he has on me. And his love for Hannah is endearing.

Hannah is really smart, her heart and head understanding the nature and humanity of this film, her depiction of Jenny so spot on, so many people do not get her character Hannah nailed it.

The impact this movie has had on veterans across the world is so massive.
Gary Sinese who played Lt. Dan has been doing a lot of volunteer work to help veterans over the years since his role in forest gump and he even has a band named "Lt. Dan Band" in honor of vets and in homage to the character.
I agree. Saw Sinise's interview on this movie and his foundation, where he was very well spoken and thoughtful. Had a newfound respect for him after that. Tom Hanks portrayed the pure, true, and kind hearted man in the movie, but Gary Sinise continued on in real life for decades after. Major salute to Lt. Dan, fr.
Gary Sinise is a great American hero. ❤

Hannah, you're the first ive seen to REALLY get Jenny. Forrest was pure, Jenny knew this, she kept leaving him because she thought she would hurt/change even destroy him.
I especially appreciate her acceptance of Jenny as well. Everyone hates on her - and nobody understands that she is a victim of sexual abuse as a child. The strength it takes to live your life with a past that started out so dark that it feels like you can't come back from it... that strength is insane
Yes. This movie has no simple bad or good characters, it's more complex than that. You have to be capable of understanding Jenny to see her life and personality are different. We are all humans trying to do what we judge is right for our path through life. People who don't get that, don't get the different characters in this movie, especially Jenny.
Are you kidding? Jenny was a terrible person. She only used Forrest throughout, right up to the end because she was dying of aids. It's amazing people can't see that.

I absolutely loved how empathetic you guys were with Jenny, especially with Hannah. I know that how she treated Forrest was less than nice but I've never heard people be so understanding and sympathetic of her backstory. Most people just brush over it and don't think about it when she runs away from Forrest.
To see someone moved to an emotional reaction like you had when Lieutenant Dan showed up for the wedding is why I love films like Forrest Gump. How it can bring out so many different emotions and cause you to care so deeply for the characters. I have really enjoyed the reactions you have shared. Thank you!

I was so impressed with him for breaking down like that during the scene. Cause I got a bit pissy when he ruined the scene with him and Jenny at his house that night before she left. Glad to see a guy let himself get emotional and not deflect it into a joke all the time.

Reactions are a dime a dozen, but jokes are rare.
I'm so glad you all can see how sad Jenny's story really is. Childhood abuse will mess you up. I'm a survivor myself. You have this innate feeling of "badness" and unworthiness. When people are nice to you, you don't trust it. You are always waiting for the other shoe to drop. Like you don't deserve kindness.
In that same boat as well. Trauma just messes up our brains so much. I have cried every time I see Jenny's story arc.

My ex was abused when she was little it led to drugs and other bad things. 😢 From what I hear she is clean and sober and doing well now.
Lord I pray that you will come into this person's life and anybody that has been through abuse and torture I pray you will come into there life soften there hearts and that they will accept Jesus Christ into there hearts as there Lord and Savior and I pray Lord you will show them how good you are and how much you love them and they will fall in love with you Lord and see the goodness of you Lord. I pray that they will dedicate there lives to you Lord do the will of the Father the Son and the Holy Ghost and be baptized with the Holy Ghost and fire and live the Christ like life they know they should according to your will and word and I will too and I pray they will inspire and encourage and influence friends, family members and other people they encounter and interact with to do the same thing. By far the best reaction to this movie. I can explain the running, why he ran after she left. My husband left me and our 3 daughters in 2009. The pain in my heart was so much that the only thing that seemed to help, was running. I started running 5 miles everyday or at least every other day. You run until the pain stops. Until, it starts to fade. This movie hits so hard because it’s so real… the pain, the humor, and the surprises. Jenny was so mentally and emotionally broken, she couldn’t function like a healthy person, and probably blamed herself and continued to punish herself through abusive relationships. She saw that Forest was too pure and undamaged, she knew she would ruin that for him. So, that was her way of loving him… protecting Forest from her chaos.

It's interesting seeing the general negative reaction to Jenny online and I can understand it. But her character is probably one of the most accurate portrayals of trauma-induced self-destructive behaviour i've seen, because it just inherently makes no sense to anyone who doesn't understand

You’re one of the only reaction videos that put it together that it was never that Jenny didn’t think Forrest was good enough. She always believed she wasn’t good enough for him and would hurt him. Most reaction videos totally miss it and keep saying the same lines: “why does Jenny act this way?” Good job!

I think one of the most underrated moments in this movie is at 46:03 of your video where Forrest and Lt. Dan just look at each other and have that moment together. I know I'm not going to properly put it into words but just knowing what they both went through in their lives and to be at such a happy point for both of them, I just loved it so much. No dialogue either, just a look. Great acting.

Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan very well may be the best side character I've ever seen in a movie. The scenes "He is not stupid! You do not call him stupid!" and the wedding scene with his titanium legs and wife are absolutely phenomenal. The scene where he shows up to be Forrest's first mate is great too.
And it started him on a path as a very big military supporter in the form of the “Lt Dan Foundation” and the “Lt Dan Band” and other charities such as the USO
“First mate”. Idk why but I like that better than saying “best man”

To be fair to Ash, that word is absolutely absurd and has no business spelling itself the way it is spelled.
I've seen a few British people react to this movie and one thing they always misunderstand is the huge stack of letters when he's in the military hospital. Those letters are all of the ones that Forrest has written to Jenny. They were all returned unread (because Jenny wasn't there to be delivered to, not intentionally).
And I don't think it's got anything to do with being British either. I think the andressee's name and address is always written front and center on the envelope, no matter what country you're from, right? So there's no way someone would look at Jenny Cohan(?) on the envelopes and think they are sent from her.
I think it has more to do with the fact that people really don't use physical mail anymore, and never even grew up with it. Why would they (young people) know intricate details about it, when e-mails, text messages, and cell phones were around from the age they were born?

The mail is the same everywhere, it's due to their age. They grew up with emails, probably never wrote a letter in their lives. My children just graduated a couple years ago and they weren't taught to write in cursive at any point in grade school or high school ! Isn't that fucked up ? (Btw I'm from Canada)
@@One_foot_in_the_Grave Well they seemed confused about all of Forest's mail being returned to sender and I'm not judging them for that but I think it's common knowledge that different countries/cultures often do things differently.
I never paid it any mind seeing this as a kid, but as I grew older I came to realize what a absolutely beautiful arc Lieutenant Dan has.
It's funny how he talks down to Forrest but you can tell at the same time he looks up to him.
I saw this in a theatre when it came out and walked out of the movie as a grown man crying like a baby-truly one of the most powerful movies ever made.
Hi Robert Tompkins! To see Forrest Gump in the theaters in 1994 must have been INCREDIBLE! 1994 happens to be my birth year. I think this movie has such an Amazing balance of many genres of film (Drama, Comedy, Romance, "Coming-Of-Age", War Film, etc...). And the performances are all VERY good, especially from Tom Hanks (and Gary Sinise as Lt. Dan is another personal favorite for me). Overall, I just find Forrest Gump to be Very inspirational, and Also, my brother has Autism, which helps me connect with the movie even more (I know Forrest did not have Autism, but him and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled).
I also just wanted to mention that Last Year, I actually posted a video on my TH-cam channel that was almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to try and create something unique.

I was crying with you guys because I haven’t seen this in like so long. And then, when you said “ it makes you wanna run” and Hannah’s like “ no, I don’t wanna do that” I started laughing my ass off in the car lol it made me feel better.
Cast Away is a must see, but you guys should also do A League of Their Own which is probably my favorite Hanks role about the first female baseball league. You'll both get a lot out of that too and it's much more lighthearted fun.

Tom Hanks became a star with his comedies - Big, Splash, Money Pit are all great and you should react. Also love him and Leo in Catch Me if You Can. And with Gary again in Apollo 13.
Hannah thank you for understanding Jenny. What you were trying to say is exactly right. She didn’t believe she deserved Forrest, or anything good… and she also, on some level, knew she was screwed up and didn’t want to bring him into that messiness. As a ‘Jenny’ myself, I knew straight away where she was coming from and where she was trying to run… away from herself!
Great reaction guys to an amazing movie. Cast Away is an awesome movie. If you want to see a younger Tom Hanks watch Big (funny, light hearted) or my personal favourite Philadelphia (heart wrenching, about the early days of AIDs epidemic).
I’m a male version of “Jenny”. It took me until I was 40 years old to get counseling. Hannah, thank you for understanding how abuse can dictate behavior.

You still need to take accountability for your actions and past trauma isn’t an excuse to hurt others.
@@oni6903 no one said it’s an excuse! But it is an explanation of what trauma can do to people. We can see from the movie that she did eventually work through her trauma. We all have our own path to healing. And yes, some of us may cause others hurt along the way. And that’s something we need to address, apologise for and reconcile. Also, not everyone has access to help or the tools to help them heal, that would be a very privileged response to think so. There are many studies on how different people react differently to similar traumas. I would never excuse anyone truly hurting another physically or emotionally and continuing the cycle… but pushing people away is a pretty understandable reaction. Accountability is something we all must face in life for all our decisions.
I just lost my girlfriend in a tragedy, she was Iranian. Listening to Ash talk to his mom in the beginning reminded me of listening to her when she would speak to her mom in Farsi. Beautiful memories 😌

This movie is an emotional rollercoaster. So many times you want to cry, either because it's so wonderful, or because it's so sad.
I think it strikes everyone very close to home, because we see some of each character in ourselves. For me, Jenny's struggle, her brush with suicide, her internal pain she spends her whole life running from... it's very personal to me.
There's not enough good that can be said about this film, it's beautiful from start to finish.
Forrest Gump is the world's greatest Taoist. He's simple, kind-hearted, giving, content, and remains consistently himself. He never tries to be something he's not. The whole world changes - fashions, political figures, and celebrities come and go - but Forrest remains unchanged.

Forrest was on a 3 year run. He never stayed in one place long enough for Jenny to ever contact him about having a kid. When he did get home, there was a letter from her waiting for him. We dont know how long that letter had been there.

For most of the movie, she views Forrest as the same as she was; he's not smart enough to understand the feelings she has towards him. Whenever she wants to act on those feelings, she feels like she's doing to Forrest what her father did to her.

42:29 honestly, the thing that separates Forrest from literally everyone else is; he never ran from his problems, he ran with his problems. Until he eventually got over them. And in this specific instance, he didn't leave them behind, he brought them with, for thousands of miles, until his problems couldn't uphold their place and he realized, "I can just let these problems go."
Not forget his trauma, at all, but learn from it.
Hannah, I appreciate so much that you understand Jenny. On every reaction to this movie I see so many comments hating on her saying she's selfish, a b!tch, a user, etc. People don't seem to get that this girl is broken and her entire sense of self-worth was utterly destroyed when she was just a young girl. I love that you recognize Jenny pushing Forrest away was an act of love and protection, not selfishness or cruelty. Jenny literally gave Forrest nothing but eye candy and a son after she contracted aids. We all sympathized with her upbringing but if she wanted to protect Forrest she would have never came back into his life. The ending only works because we believe in the innocence Forrest, that he would happily care for the child (even if it wasn't his).

Also, a tiny bit of a detail: remember when she left Forrest's house, and the driver asked where she was running to, and she said "I'm not running"?
Well, consider this: next time we see her, she is not only a mother, but seems pretty well adjusted. Some people think (and I'm inclined to also believe it) that *that* is when she said Enough is Enough, and went to get *actual* therapy and professional help. I personally don't recall any detail, in the movie, to suggest that she *didn't* try to reach Forrest sooner, too. She could have easily done it, but since Forrest was in his running spree, well... turns out that by that point she already knows about her disease.
EDIT: The moment when Liutenant Dan defends Forrest in pretty underrated, too, I agree with Ash there. Lt. Dan seems to be just so over it all, you almost expect him to dismiss the whole thing, but instead he "jumps" (Pun not intended) in Forrest defense. It's pretty impressive stuff, all of the sudden, and even strengthen when the Lt. actually shows up to be Forrest's first mate.
Forrest was the only man Jenny could dump that kid on because other men wouldn't have taken him in. Forrest is a simp male who gives Jenny more attention than she deserves. Forrest is a College football All American, a Medal of Honor Winner, International Ping Pong Champion, and the millionaire owner of a corporation. Forrest could have a way better woman, who is clean, yet he choses Jenny who has been run thru more than the Holland Tunnel. its obvious that the kid is not Forrest son.

Hi Ashleigh Robinson! I hope you and yours are doing well! Forrest Gump is also 1 of those movies that has a special place in my heart! Whenever I watch it, I just find that it is SO engaging and well-acted that it feels like it is a quick watch even though the movie is almost 2 1/2 hours long. Overall, I just I find it to be very inspirational, and it has moments that I think most people can relate to on an emotional level. Also, my brother actually has Autism, which helps me connect with this movie even more (I know Forrest Gump did not have Autism, but him and my brother can relate a bit in that they are both disabled).
I also just wanted to mention that Last Year, I actually posted a video on my TH-cam channel that was almost like a tribute video to Forrest Gump (though I called it a Mashup). You see, there's a band named Family Of The Year, and they used their hit song "Hero" for Richard Linklater's 2014 movie called Boyhood. For my video, I used "Hero" as background music while showing various scenes from Forrest Gump. Aside from matching song lyrics with movie scenes, my intention with the video was to try and create something unique.

Loved this, it was so nice seeing you take turns blubbering. Probably my favorite movie, my wife won't watch it with me because I'm such a stoic guy emotionally and it makes me sob like a baby. I think of all the gifts I was given, and how all of them couldn't match what Forrest did through the strength of his conviction and his love for others. The Lt. Dan stuff in particular tears me up, I always start the waterworks where you do, when he walks up to the wedding smiling and clean cut. I can't believe Gary Sinise lost Best Actor that year, of all the Awards the movie won.

I liked that part when LT. Dan threw those girls out too because it shows you how we feel about the people we consider our friends; that "I can say whatever I want to about them; You Can't" mentality. And it was also very nice how they went full circle with the fact that his whole journey started with running and that was the way his journey had to end.

did you notice when jenny said "make me a bird so i can fly far away from here" and then later, she is on the ledge and "free bird" is playing? she was running the whole time trying to find freedom but realized it was herself she couldn't get away from. she had to confront herself and the abuse that she went through in order to find comfort. she thought "free" meant running. but it turned out she just needed to stand still with forrest. he waited for her too. it's so special.
One angle I don't see brought up enough about Jenny's motivations is about how if her father did sexually abuse her as a child, she had her innocence taken from her very early, she was forced to grow up fast, and after a string of toxic boyfriends she must've felt so sexually jaded, she didn't feel pure and innocent anymore. And she did love Forrest, but every time he brought up the prospect of being her boyfriend, or getting married, relationships that have a sexual component to them, and Forrest being so childlike and innocent.... I mean how could it not bring up some sort of discomfort, that she would be in the role of the sexually experienced adult, would it make her feel like she was in the role that her father had in her young life, like she was taking advantage of someone so childlike and naive? I really think that was part of what was driving her to keep running from Forrest, she could see her own long stolen innocence in him and she didn't want to take it from him, it made her feel like a predator.
I wanted to contradict you by saying "well, what about when she teased him in her college dorm? Or that one night in his house, finally?", but that just reinforced the notion of how damaged she is and stilted her upbringing was. Sex seemed to be the only thing she knew and found comfort in, with it sometimes crossing into the completely perverse and disgusting, like sex with anybody and everybody, or taking advantage of a handicapped man.
Finally! A reaction that recognises where Jenny’s behaviour is coming from! You guys are so compassionate and understanding, it’s so refreshing to see! 💗 Unfortunately, it’s so common for survivors of childhood sexual abuse to end up repeating the cycle of trauma subconsciously, as it’s all they’ve known and understood of the world from an early age. Since Jenny was a little girl, she’s been taught that her only worth and value as a human being is as a sexual object to be taken advantage of, and as such, she has such a low opinion of herself and views herself as unworthy of love and kindness. She’s never known what real love is, and so cannot believe that Forrest truly loves her, as she thinks that no one could, so she runs away. She thinks that she is unworthy of Forrest, who to her is the epitome of goodness and innocence, and the only true friend she’s ever had in the world, and so she runs away. Such a tragic story, but told though such a good and pure character that he can make you see the light in anything; kudos to his mother for raising a guy like that ☀️
P.S - Have you guys seen BBC’s Dracula, the 3-part series they released in 2020? If not, it would be amazing if you’d consider reacting to it; It’s probably the most charismatic portrayal of the character I’ve seen to date, and so brilliantly written! I’d advise not looking too much into it beforehand though… Probably best to go into that one blind and open, wouldn’t want to give you all the answers beforehand 😉
Also Penny Dreadful is an absolute masterpiece if you were looking for a full-on series to react to at some point… xxx

With Hep-C (correct me if I’m wrong) you need blood transfer between partners to catch it as well as at the time Hep-C was much more serious. I dated girl that was abused by her ex(badly), I provided for her, loved her, but she got used to her previous way of life of constant emotional Rollercoaster, so she said "you're too good for me, I don't deserve it" and left, she was always in alert state saying she doesn't deserve it all... Damn... I met her few years back, she looked 20 years older, she completely changed to worse, I wanted to say hi, she was really aggressive towards me, blaming for everything bad in her life naming things and dates I wasn't even a part of... 😐

When they get that first feeling of calm and peace. Because they sometimes are so desperate to on to that feeling as their last and are afraid of sinking again, so they feel that might be the right time to end it.

I've seen the behavior of girls who were abused as a child and it took a lost girlfriend and a long time to understand the harm that was done to them. Jenny's character is understandable, yet all the more frustrating, because of Forrest's unconditional love for her. I've seen several reactors react harshly to her character. Props to the gorgeous redhead.

Sally Fields who plays Forrest's Mama has always been one of my favorite actresses. She is outstanding in Steel Magnolias...she plays Julia Robert's Mama, and Sybil, where she plays a girl with multiple personalities which if I remember correctly was based on a true story. Of course Mrs. Doubtfire with Robin Williams. Heck...she is amazing.
OH another great of Sally Fields is in Smokey and the Bandit - another classic - same year as Star Wars release.

Hannah is about the sweetest reactor I've seen so far. She gets a lot of the a lot of the feeling and purpose behind the characters. Jenny was emotionally mess up for a long time and she did not feel worthy of Forest's love. And after they made love she was convinced he was better off without her. People who are views are very self-destructive because like you said it's all they know. And because she loved him so much she did not want to hurt him. I'm sorry you guys missed when he was in Vietnam recovering from his gunshot wound that the letters were not from Jenny they will return to sender because she never it opened any of them. You two are definitely two ends of the spectrum. Very interesting to watch

Tom Hanks has the uncanny knack of becoming the heart and soul of every picture he's in and you can't go wrong with anything from his extensive and impressive catalogue, even early ones like 'Splash' and 'Big'.. An overlooked personal favourite is 'Road to Perdition' (2002). I love the way you guys play off each other and found myself literally LOL several times, as usual. Well done again.
Road to Perdition is fantastic. Jude Law and Paul Newman..... all star cast, and is greatly overlooked as well as a very early movie called Joe vs. The Volcano (that one isn't necessarily one of my favorites or a masterpiece but Hanks definitely shows early on in his career that he's something different). Another great one is Catch Me If You Can, which I think is based on a true story.

I've seen many people react to this movie and they all seem to be mad at Jenny. Hannah is the first person to see how hurt and damaged Jenny is and she doesn't mean to hurt Forrest, she pushes him away because she doesn't think she's worthy of his love. Scars from childhood are deep.
I was quite impressed with her immediate understanding of jenny’s character and the aftermath of childhood trauma. She got the gist immediately and reacted appropriately to the sadness of jenny’s behavior.
You know you can still understand she's damaged, and yet still be mad at her actions that she chooses, right?. One doesn't automatically exclude the other.
The difference is that people who share your perspective on her try to justify her bad choices with the past. Those who are mad at her for her choices believe that she is old enough and experienced enough to know the difference between good and bad, yet still chooses bad things.
Life is a struggle. You can either use a past traumatic experience as an excuse for continuing live in a pit of your own misery, or you can reject the misery that a past experience gave you and be better for it.
@@Gutslinger I just think there’s often no balanced view of her character. You either hate her or you understand her to the point of “oh she endured trauma so I can’t be mad”. Also with your last paragraph, viewers often gloss over the fact that Jenny does turn her life around at the end and even apologizes about her actions. She was able to be the best of herself but the road before it was filled with self destructive behavior until she finally took action. I just think it takes more time for some to fix themselves.
Forrest never judges anyone, however broken they may be, and is just there for them. He makes their life better and helps them even if they don’t want him initially. If more of us were like this the world would be so much better.
The way this works in real life is you open yourself up to someone like Jenny and they take and take and take and take and take and take and take until there's nothing left and you become cynical and jaded.
Everyone being like Forest only works if there aren't any Jennys around. And there will always be Jennys around.
@@twelvecatsinatrenchcoat I understand what you are saying, and there are many men and women who have had trauma in their lives that leads them to make bad decisions that impact all around them.
What I like about this film is that Forrest is never judgmental and makes a real difference to people’s lives even when they maybe do not see the need for it.
There will always be Jenny’s and Lieutenant Dans that have issues and hang ups and of course they will do damage to people in ways that they shouldn’t, but that is part of life unfortunately.
