Today we're wringing our eyes out watching this freakin' boo-hooze movie called Forrest Gump. Thanks to all the MSP-ers for suggesting this damn movie and triggering me (Sean) endlessly. (!!! SPOILER ALERT !!! ) We cry like lil' babies needing their pampers changed. This movie damaged me. Not really but damn... it was emo x 💯!

@@jjsdad4952 the only thing about this movie that doesn’t make any sense is the Apple part because in the 90s Apple was almost bankrupt so for stock would’ve been worth nothing. the 90s stock for apple went from 140 to 14 but now its like 224.

You guys understand Jenny much better than most reactors. Her childhood was filled with trauma, particularly from her father. Its what she expects from people and she can't understand when people are good to her, which is why she runs. Great reaction y'all.
Yes, I’ve seen some reactors that just hate on her ALL thru the movie. Obviously they’ve never been through trauma. These guys understood from the beginning.
Her abusive father destroyed her ability to respect and love herself. She kept running and looking for a reason to love herself. She spent the next 30 years building her self-worth....and finally succeeded when she last saw Forrest.

"Isn't he beautiful?" "...He's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen." That line gets me. So many sad lines honestly.
Specifically because at the start of the movie, he describes seeing Jenny for the first time as the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. my HEART.
The level of Respect of Forest to Lieutenant Dan he never called him without that title and I think that was just so sweet for him even though he's a millionaire man at the end to Forest he'll forever be Lieutenant Dan

I always felt like Jenny telling Forrest to run was because that’s the only way she knows how to get away from her problems and from a very young age she tried to teach her best friend what she knew.

@@ChrisFrom515 it’s ultimately self-worth and self-love that Jenny doesn’t have due to her father. She is actually a sweet human being but it was her trauma that shaped her into who she is
It was a skill that saved him many times. I always took his three year run as a response to the emotional trauma of her leaving for what felt like the last time. Running is what he did when he was in trouble. I feel very strongly that the fact that he felt like running for three years after she left was no coincidence.
Forrest Gump's mind is not as cluttered as everyone else's minds are.
He may think on very simple terms, but he also thinks on very clear terms. Moral clarity.
Well said, moral clarity is more valuable than IQ in life.
At that year's Oscar awards, Tom Hanks said as much, that in a time when most people were unsure, Forrest Gump's own moral compass always remained true.

The thing about Jenny is that she always loved him as much as Forrest loves her but she didn't think she was good enough for him. She considered him one of the purest people and she thought she would taint him because she felt dirty after what her father, and then later scumbags, did to her. She had to get her mind right and realize it wasn't her fault and allowed herself to accept the unconditional love that Forrest gave freely.
@@kazbaby this comment is very true, as a survivor myself it takes the purest thing imaginable to change your own mind about you, a baby. It’s not the case for everyone but I believe it was the case for Jenny and myself ♥️

Nice to see other grown men, like myself, who ball during movies like this. As I have gotten older, I find myself balling even more. Romance movies are the worst, because they remind me of the feelings felt in my younger years when falling in love. When a man can cry while watching a movie it shows that he has a good and kind heart, despite living in a society where men are not expected to show their emotions..
Forrest was named after their ancestor to remind him that sometimes people do things that don't make any sense. She was clearly stating that she disagrees with racism and what their ancestor did.
I don't know if you guys noticed but at 1:12:45 the birds chirping after forest walks away from Jenny's grave were a reference to her praying to god to be turned into a bird i also thing that's why forest is so interested by the feather ♥
That’s right about the beautiful birds at her gravesite. But at the end, Forest isn’t looking at the feather… the feather is for *us* the audience, as as tieback to the opening of the film. Beautifully done.
Out of all the men Jenny COULD'VE had a child with, she had one from the most innocent, sweetest, most wonderful man. That was the grace that saved her. In the end, Forrest still saved her in a way. He loved her in the most purest way anyone could. That's what she needed. She had never known love without the violence and trauma. He gave her that.
@@ozzmandias0083 When Forrest tells her "You're my girl", it always touches me. He didn't know hatred, he knew love. And she was the one he loved the most. Didn't matter what she did, even to him, he always loved her.
If you think that's his kid your nuts, she is a dirty tramp and she is trying to take advantage of a very wealthy man with the mind of a child. This is not romantic in any way.
I don't think many people realized that the bus driver actually quit smoking. Her emphasis on chewing the gum whilst talking with Forrest Jr. at the end of the movie is a very subtle yet effective detail. This movie is filled with little details like this one and you will not get all of them unless you watch the movie over and over. It makes watching this movie over again such a great experience.

When the birds fly off from Jenny’s grave, many people take that to mean that she finally became a bird like she wanted. Fun fact, the birds were entirely unscripted.

So many memorable scenes. The "Is he...smart...??" scene always hits hard. And Gary Sinise was amazing. And it did impact his life a lot. Does countless veteran and charity work since. Just a wonderful human being.
His emotional intelligence is very high. I wouldn't even say he's unintelligent in general either.

Because of Jenny's abusive childhood she considered herself damaged goods and therefore was not good enough for someone with a pure soul like Forest, I believe that is why she told him "You don't want to marry me" to Forest. After her life changed around when she had a child she could then accept that she was good enough.
I watched this Movie when it first came out in 1994 with my wife...she passed away in 2014 and I lost my Debbie...my "Jenny".. she was my best friend

You two are, literally, the ONLY men on Al Gore's Internet that understood Jenny. As a woman, the grace and empathy y'all had for her character was SO meaningful and moving. All of the young men reactors get so aggressive, rude, and down right mean towards the Jenny character and act like she is REQUIRED to be Forrest's girlfriend just because HE likes her. They ignore her personal trauma and issues AND the fact that just those two words meant NOTHING back in those days and there was no such thing as "mental health" or "therapy" and psychologists were only meant to analysis the psychotic back then. Thank you for being understanding and empathetic. The WORLD needs many many more males like you two. If you ever have the time I'd think participating in the Big Brother mentoring program could help course correct a few young boys' lives. 🥰❤
Not just the young men, I've seen plenty of young women be mean towards her as well.
One might have expected them to have more empathy, but I guess that's not the case.

I know people like her in real life and eventually you need to put your foot down and let their trauma excuse continued bad behavior.
I’ll give her credit though, she found help and eventually straightened herself out. I wish more people would look for that help and accept it.
Fun fact when Lt Dan says to Forrest "the day you are a shrimp boat captain that's the day I'm a astronaut" Tom and Gary Sinise were both filming Apollo 13 at the same time as this movies so they were both Astronauts lol
I Have a hard time not crying during the Forrest Gump movie. I can relate to a lot of it and it brings up things in my past that I personally experienced that it reminds me of some good some bad but man this movie is definitely a tearjerker for me personally but I love this movie❤❤

I've probably seen this movie a couple hundred times since it came out, and it still gets me every single time.
I believe that conversation with Forrest is what changed Jenny. She realized that she was not fit for Forrest which is why she said "You don't want to marry me." not I don't want to marry you. Then she realized that she didn't know what love meant. That's why she told the taxi that she wasn't running. She was finally facing her demons and leaving to get herself clean and worthy. She most likely had planned to contact him but he was running. 🏃

When we saw this in the theater, there was a collective "oof" when Forrest says, "Sometimes there just aren't enough rocks."
Bedford Forrest was a very effective CSA General. He formed the KKK. He left them behind, after the group went beyond guarding Whites' interests, and got very violent.

That part always confuses me. I was only 23 when this came out. And we were so much less aware of what trauma does to a person. But I understood Jenny perfectly. “Sometimes I guess there just aren’t enough rock” is the most underrated movie quote of all time.

I was born abled and watched this first at that point in my life, but I became disabled in my late 20's, and watching this movie at this point in my life, I REALLY appreciate what Gary Sinise did with the role of Lt Dan. He goes through the anger, grief, and genuine loss you actually get when you lose your physical abilities, and when he finally accepts his disability, finds peace and new purpose. . . love it. It's fantastic.
And I really appreciate how understanding you both were of Jenny. A lot of reactors don't understand that she has been traumatized from years of abuse, and it can make watching reactions to this movie a little frustrating. It was also a great video because ya'll actually get the historical references! Most reactors are younger and miss a lot of them, so that was a blast to watch :)
Thank you so much, that really means a lot to us. We have heard the sentiment about Jenny quite a bit and to me it is shocking. How do people miss the fact that she grew up being abused? A couple of people in the comments have called her a villain. She’s a victim, not a villain

Hands down the BEST movie reaction I've seen all year (from anyone for any movie). As a fellow GenX, it was great watching two grown men of a similar age cry like babies and get nearly all of the historical references. Most of the reactors are too young to get a lot of the stuff that makes this movie so special. I'm going to watch this again right now!

Loved how much you both seemed to understand Jenny. Whenever she asked Forrest to stay away it was for Forrest's sake, not hers, because she thought she was a bad influence for him. That's why she said "You don't want to marry me". People who have been abused tend to have very low self esteem. It's said that we only accept the love we think we deserve, and that's true for Jenny. I think the night they slept together she realized she needed to fully sort herself out before being able to love Forrest how he deserves.

There aren't many perfect movies. This is a perfect movie. The emotional pacing is topnotch. Forrest is runs to go somewhere, Jenny runs to get away.
You are not human if the "is he smart?" line does not make you cry. Every time.
my favorite callback in this whole movie... in the bar on new years Lt Dan says when Gump is a shrimp boat captain he'll be an astronaut, then at Gumps wedding his legs are made of "the same as the space shuttle"

The advice to change socks at every stop/Mekong River eating feet was to prevent skin breakdown, decay, and infections from prolonged moisture… also referred to as “trench foot” bc it was also seen in WWI with the soldiers in Europe spending so much time in trenches-which were extremely muddy and wet at the bottom

Most reactors just hate on her the entire time, she definitely did wrong hurting Forrest so many times, but you guys also understood that all she knows is abuse, like you said, she couldn't possibly fathom why Forrest could be so good to her. She didn't think she deserved to be loved.
Exactly; the girl clearly suffered from PTSD and severe depression…and she sadly never gotten any professional help or therapy as it was during the late 80s where the awareness on mental health was not prominent to the public

I have seen this movie reviewed by at least a dozen teams. You two understood more, delighted in more, and predicted more than any other respondees.
The leg braces were the period treatment for scoliosis, it had nothing to do with his legs. Once his spine was straight, he just busted out of them.
Spine problems do affect the ability to use your legs. I can no longer walk because of spinal problems. In my case it was the opposite of Forrest because it began 60 years later in my life than it did in Forrest's early years.
@@sharonhoyt2133 thats not what he said. the treatment on the leggs with bracers was to force the spine in a straight line while in the developing phases of childhood. That was a way to treat scoliosis. When the spine grew straight and could do so on its own, the need for the bracers would disappear as depicted in this movie that forest could run freely without bracers once his spine was corrected. In the movie it just feels like 5 minutes, but i could have been a year or 2 passed once he got the bracers until they got assaulted by the boys on bikes.
so yes, in the context of this movie, the bracers had nothing to do with his ability to walk. The spine was the problem and the bracers where the solution to the spine broblem. The bracers did not treat the symptom, but the disease.
@@ronniebots9225 To be fair, Sharon is also correct. I was in a bad car accident about 11 years ago and it messed up my spine. As a result, my hips were misaligned and I had more difficulty walking than I did before. Chiropractic has so much to do with our mobility and joint pain.
@@ronniebots9225 I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I was addressing him saying that nothing was wrong with his legs. He had to have the leg braces because he could not walk due to spine issues. I was simply pointing out that the spine affects the ability to walk. IE. Forrest and I both had walking problems because of the spinal issues but they definitely affected the legs. If the legs do not work because of the spine it is still an issue with the legs.

4:30 Nathan Bedford Forrest was a real general. And yes, he is known for starting the KKK. But then, he moved to abolish the clan and burned his robes. He was later known for his many attempts to secure voting rights for blacks. By the end of his life, he was invited to the barbecue. And his funeral was integrated. People can learn and change. 😊
Sometimes it takes being in the belly of the beast to truly understand the hurt it is causing before one can change.

Learn something new every day. I'd always known NBF had founded the KKK, but always thought his story pretty much ended there. I had no idea that he later had regrets and, in time, even reversed his views to some extent. Amazing.

My favorite fun fact about this movie is that the producers originally wanted the actor for Kid Forrest to talk like Tom Hanks instead of his natural southern accent. Tom Hanks stood up for him and flipped the script instead, which is how we got that iconic slow drawl that Forrest has.

I've seen A LOT of reactions to this movie. I really mean A LOT. And I gotta say, your reaction is by far the best one of all of those I've seen. You picked up on things incredibly quickly, you made all the right connections. For example many are mad at Jenny and don't understand why she's treating him like that, but you saw that right away and made the connection to her past. I have always loved Tom Hanks But after this movie He skyrocketed to my top tier ❤ Forest is the sweetest soul and we are forever changed by him ❤

@@mikeyshowpresentsI'm so glad can I watch you guys reaction to this. As many people have said here already... both of you really "get" Jenny right from the beginning. Also you both don't blame her or shame her as I've seen quite a few other reactors do. AS someone has gone through childhood trauma somewhat similar to hers and also as an adult with abuse. I've also struggled with drugs so this has ALWAYS been something that bothered me about other reactors because they came off as very judgmental. If you haven't experienced it TRUST ME you don't know the ins and outs of a lot of OUR COMMUNITY'S survivor instincts and how we end up maneuvering through life. Yes we ARE a community because statistically we do have a higher rate of not just drug and alcohol abuse. But we also have one of the highest rates of suicide attempts and ALSO successful suicides. Sooo... THAT'S why it turned me off to other reactors when they dogged Jenny. Even when some of them KINDA got where she was coming. Because some of them STILL smack about her. THAT just really blew me away and IMO was like bottom feeding or what song is picking low hanging fruit IF those expressions make sense to you guys? I'm glad that you both kept reiterating a message of not to do drugs in your video.... It's very important. I tell tell people that I have more dead friends than I have live friends, AND that actually is the truth. Thank you both for treating Jenny with such an amount of genuine grace and understanding and a caring spirit. There is an expression~Hurt people hurt people and that's partly WHY Jenny does some of the things she's done in Life. It also applies as for WHY she's been self destructive in her Life. Beautiful man fucking Beautiful I've grown up with this movie I first watched it when I was 10 and now I have a wife and 3 Beautiful kids with me and man after watching this man it hits home more that any time I don't feel alone in my feelings I feel when I watch this thank you for this reaction man I cried with both of you and it is amazing to feel old now in a good way of not expecting to fell this way thank you both for makeing a childhood movie feel like a new experience

I do believe Jenny was in love with Forrest, but because of all the trauma in her life, she didn't know how to express it, and him treating her so well scared her because she just had no idea how to handle it. She knew how to handle abuse and mistreatment, but she was lost in the face of genuine love and care.
This film brilliantly forces a perspective that you don't usually experience.
The viewer is *painfully* aware of the subtext, yet the person telling us this amazing story is not.
The audience becomes protective of Forrest's world. We understand what he can't, and that understanding makes us want to shield him from life's inevitable tragedies.
We never want him to lose his fairy tale, but are helpless to do anything but go along for the ride. ❤️
I'm only 12:30 into it and it is already the best time I have EVER had with a reaction video. Well, three men just cried together watching this movie. And I've seen it multiple times!
It was a joy to watch the reactions of older folks because they grew up when all these historical events took place and just made each reveal epic. This story never fails to tug at the heart because of the outstanding delivery of the actors and the brilliant writing, directing and production. It has stood the test of time and continues to grow new fans each year! Awesome reaction!!!
Jenny lives this parallel life. The poor home life, the drugs, the sex,the abuse. She was in the hippie crowd, antiwar, rock and roll party scene, disco. All the parts of life Forrest doesn’t see. She has HIV/AIDS at the end from the “they don’t know what it is” in the early 80s. The saddest part of the movie is how little time they have once she’s cleaned up her life. Great movie.
Actually in the book and movie its Hepatitis C that she has which was new at the time also and was a death sentence. It was not transmitted to child or sexual partner so forrest and jnr are OK

I love the host with the beard who is saying that he is inclined to believe that what Forest did was real. My brother has Down’s syndrome and I used to work for Special Olympics for a very long time. Trust me when I say that an individual can speak in a different manner than traditional/non-disabled speakers and be a genius in many aspects of his life. I love this host’s optimism, and kindness.

I can say from experience, both military and sweaty foot wise, the reason for the sock changing is because of a phenom now called Submersion Foot but it used to be called Trench Foot. In WW1 it was a huge problem and it cost a lot of people pain and suffering because their feet were always in wet mud etc. In Vietnam it also had to be a big problem because of the weather/environment. If you cannot get your feet/socks/boots dry you will start to suffer a whole host of unpleasant medical issues. Cheers!

It was one of the great years in movie history. 1995, best movie nominations included Forest Gump, Shawshank Redemption, and Pulp Fiction. Three of the greatest movies of all time in one year.
I used to do sales in Santa Monica, and one of my customers was Robin Wright. She was awesome to work with! When it came time to close a deal I gave her my personal discount. I only did that for special customers. She was so appreciative, and when she asked why I told her “because you’re Jenny.” She was so happy and grateful!

Forrest Gump just crushed every other movie at the Oscars for 1994 - including Pulp Fiction and Shawshank Redemption. Now you know. I don't think it's a "better" film than Shawshank, but much more consumer friendly for a mass appeal.
@@Mister_Samsonite ooooh, that's why so many people hated it from the get go and never gave it a chance! Fortunately I was 9 back then so when I watched all 3 of them in the subsequent years, I would never have thought to compare them, as they're all clearly masterpieces of their genre.
@@carlalussini No argument there. I was 23 and saw all 3 of them not long after release - loved them all. Every so often there is a really tough year for "best picture", even knowing they don't often get it right. The same thing happened with Titanic and L.A. Confidential. Both great films, and a tough choice.

I have seen this movie 50 time's and hits me in the soul every time
No actually when Forest broke free from his steel leg supports...it was actually real...because after while you can have your body heal and you after using those supports for so long you dont even realize that you are healed until you take them off.....sometimes the body only needs a little help and it can heal miraculously...I know because of my back and leg injuries

When I saw Bear Bryant in this movie in 1994 I thought I was the only one who knew who he was! I'm that old!

The houndstooth hat should tell everyone that this was Bear Bryant. I afraid that the audience for this movie is dying off. You would have to be a US citizen older than 60 years to get all of the references. A millennial in Sydney, Australia would have no idea who Bear Bryant or George Wallace was. He wouldn’t know where the Watergate scandal got its name. He might not even know the lyrics to Imagine. Sadly, the shelf life of this movie is expiring. Future generations will not ponder the question: are we all living a life with a predetermined destiny, or are we going through life with our eyes closed, floating through our days like a feather on the breeze?
@@cammygram1 I was born in ‘96 and didn’t see this movie until well into the 2000s but being from Tuscaloosa, AL it was almost a requirement to recognize Bear Bryant in this movie 😂
For me, this movie is about how people who may appear less than average can nonetheless accomplish incredible things and live meaningful lives. Ordinary people who become extraordinary. They come from humble and broken beginnings, yet they start businesses, save lives, inspire, change culture, win trophies, and even love people who others would give up on. The character Forrest is a kind of analogous cognate or caricature of these seemingly commonplace individuals.
The part when he walks away from her grave, birds fly far away. I think it's interesting how the beginning has a bird's feather when he meets Jenny, and then the ending is that same feather floating away after she dies. The whole movie is about Jenny, really.

By the end of the movie, when he receives new legs, it signifies the restoration of respect, much like NASA's first group of astronauts, all of whom served in the military. His fiancée being Vietnamese further represents the mended relationship between the two countries.
Jenny, on the other hand, reflects the cultural shifts of the time, evolving every time Forrest encounters her. Forrest’s son represents the new generation that emerged from all these changes.
Also forrest “the average american “ loves the culture no matter how bad is it to him, he still loves her “my girl”

"forrest gump" has been one of my favorite movies of all time, ever since i was a little kid. i used to rent a vhs of this movie (that should tell you how old i am, lol) so often that they started to give it to me for free, no joke. bless you, guys. that was great, i enjoyed it a ton.

Just finished the video and I can explain the roller coaster of emotions Forrest tells his life story from a place of pure innocence he experiences things in the moment like with bubba dying in his arms and then to him eating ice cream and being taught how to play ping pong I wish y'all would've left the part where Forrest speaks to Jenny while she's on her death bed and Forrest tells her about the places he's been and all the things he's seen and she says "I wish I could've been there with you" to which Forrest replied with "you were"

Yep I always joke that Philadelphia is a sequel to Forrest Gump. She got sober at his house so Def's had it when she banged him then left, and just didn't know yet.
