I have found myself watching these clips of the great Bette Davis over and over! She has such a warm personality, and is so sincere and down to earth, that I could listen to her talk for hours and hours, and not only be dazzled by her presence, but also feel inspired to take on the world with the great passion that radiates from this remarkable woman!
dont know if you guys cares but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all of the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. Been streaming with my girlfriend during the lockdown :)
You know, I never thought much about Ms. Davis until I saw this interview a few years ago. From the moment she walked out, until the moment the show ended..... you were watching a STAR! Since then, I have corrected my error, and have fallen in love with Bette Davis.
This is almost my favorite part of the interview with her comments about "Gone With The Wind" and her linguistics analysis. I love when she relaxes, asks for water and lets loose with the gin remark. I wish she had said more about her relationship with Joan Crawford, one of the most legendary in Hollywood history.
Late Ms. Davis was the last star from Old Hollywood. Now the 'stars' cannot talk so interesting during the interview.... Good we have the Internet so we can see her.
One thing I've noticed is the way she acknowledges and bows to the audience right after greeting the host, and she does it at the end on another part. Stars don't really do that on talk shows anymore, it's all in a bubble today.
You are somewhat correct, the young like the "superhero" movies, because of action. They want to be entertained. However, to put all Americans in one basket... probably not a good idea. I prefer older movies now, 1930s, through 1970s, but I'm older now. On the same token, I cannot stand 99% of modern movies, at least in America. So you do have a point.
Of her generation Bette is amazing. Incredible screen presents. I’m a Boomer and will say she is my all time favorite. A class act. So real and down to earth. She can play any character.
she is the very definition of SUPERSTAR,she has intelligence, wit and magnetism by the bucket load. This lady broke the mould in so many ways-i admire and respect this "true to herself " LADY.
I am transfixed the way she strolls on, handbag there as if to say "I am here & thats MY bag".She was full to the brim with insight, intelligence, charisma & you put that with her honesty, straight forward & fearless personality & you have the nearest thing to a force of nature. The class, ease of talking & the wisdom is simply rare. How many stars today will have her and her era's staying power & be legends.like Bette,Liz,Katherine and Audrey there are more but these were the cream of the crop
I wasn't very familiar with Bette's work until recently. After seeing ten films and several interviews, she's now my favourite actress ever. Kate Winslet has to settle for number two. Bette just fascinates me, I could watch her all day. Outspoken, honest, brave, intelligent, talented... I could watch someone like that all day. She deserves the admired position she holds in history.
i wish we had movie stars like this today.. i mean there's a few good actors/actresses, but nobody is a real "star" anymore.. everybody borrows expensive clothes and jewelry for the oscars, but there isn't any TRUE glamour anymore.. i guess that's the one thing the old studios DID give their actors who were under contract - they taught them how to be STARS..
This is really good! She can be one helluva charming lady! Her deep dislike of Errol Flynn is legendary so I was surprised at how gracious she was talking about him. Remarkable woman!
I read once, Bette Davis made up that story about rejecting Gone with the Wind. Davis was signed to Warner Bros. Studios during this period and several major Hollywood studios were bidding the rights to film Gone with the Wind as it was a very popular book. MGM Studios being the richest studio in Hollywood at the time outbid every studio to have the rights to film the book. As Warner Bros. lost the bidding, there was no way Bette Davis was offered the role of Scarlett.
I checked that, sources say that Warner offered David Selznick the chance to borrow Bette and Errol for the roles in exchange for distribution rights to the film, but as Bette said she declined. Selznick’s very first choice was Clark Gable, and Vivien Leigh won after a major casting campaign that helped publicity.
Bette comes off a remarkably charming, real and funny! I loved this interview with Dick Cavett as he simply led her to talk as she would to a friend revealing a very likeable woman.
That was the way Dicks interviews were. Like you were sitting across from each other at the kitchen table listening to a private conversation. Most guests were comfortable and loved being on his show.
Bette was a very intelligent and classy Woman and actress She was always a joy to watch on the screen or tv and esp inher interviews. She has a great sense of humor too and down to earth and very grounded mentally. She never beat around the bush she was very honest direct and sure of herslef. This interview really is a treat. You dont see many actresses today that have what she had
That's so true. I've even heard certain people criticized lately for giving interesting or offbeat interviews! Why aren't they promoting their "product"? Sad.
god, how i wish she was still alive. although she would be like 102 yrs. old.. i just love watching her interviews. she had so much class and elegance.
@rayjr62 And what's really amazing about it is that she was able to do it while remaining charming, witty, and good company at the same time! Most of those kinds of people (who 'take zero shit' from anybody) are often very difficult to be around and take themselves way too seriously. Bette Davis though looks like she'd have been a hoot to be around.
@jhecht424 So you're in the L.A. area, that's really great. I always wanted to visit CA but never got out there. Maybe one day. Bette Davis is our favorite it sounds like, and with good reason. Always so entertaining, provocative and absorbing. I'm very anxious to see her house and yard, etc. The people who live there are used to people stopping by to view the house so I should have no problem. I'll enter a post after I go to Lowell, MA. Thanks for responding.
@BGSourgas I thought the same type of thing... when she said it I was thinking what? But then when she reminded us that Virginian settlers came North it made more sense. What a mind she had with so much acquired from all her acting roles. Thanks for your comment. It was very entertaining.
she was there initial cast for the role but she walked away from it the first time bc she thought it was going to be wack, and the second time she really didn't want to act with clark gable as Rhett and MGM really wanted to use him
At 5:18 Cavett says no actor had sued the studio like that before, but actually others had already done so, including Jimmy Cagney, who won. Also, Warner Bros. sued Bette Davis, not the other way around. (I don’t mention this to take anything away from badass Bette, one of my favorites! It’s just for accuracy.)
Love it, love all of it but what does she mean by "this is the 3rd show...by the 5th..."? The interview wasn't done in sections right? Or he's interviewed her before?
can u believe how young she is in here compared to the time before she died? oh and note, another doc. show celeste holmes saying bette cant laught lik her in all about eve and that she eledgedly called celeste a bitch cause she cant do it well anyways she did it here :D amazing stuff..!!
After watching Bette "off set" and in her natural guise, I can certainly understand why she and Joan Crawford didn't mesh. Joan was the opposite of Bette. I was never a fan of Joan. Bette would have been direct and honest. Joan always seemed to be "on".

betty seemed scary and unaproachable.. but good to see shes gracious, and humorous smart lady... unlike hepburn..whose nosed touched the ceiling and very unfriendly...
@jhecht424 I see you appreciate the great Davis like I do. There is no other person as iconic as her, in my opinion, she is the pinnacle all must aspire to achieve in talent, drive, intellect, knowledge and personality. She had it all and more to spare. I have jury duty in Lowell, MA in September and afterwards I'm going to stop by her birthplace. Can't wait to see her humble beginnings!! I'm sure you've heard her say her famous comment of "No compliments in Yankee land"... so hilarious.
@55kudu Because Bette had that class to care for her fans that adored her so much. She was humble and courteous enough to acknowledge her fans. These days most so-called stars could care less about their fans.
Bette Davis is what a real Superstar is supposed to be. She is smart funny and passionate about her craft. Just watch and listen to her here and then watch her over 100 films and you will see why she was a living legend. I could never understand why Katherine Hepburn was voted the #1 actress for the 20th Century. Bette was #2 but she should have had the top spot. If you watch Hepburn on The Dick Cavett show and you will see a miserable woman. Bette was very entertaining and appreciated her fans
I was so sick today and I was lucky enough to have a day off of both school AND work to be sick on (if you've got to be sick, it might as well be on a day you've already got off) so I soothed my fever with Tylenol, mineral water, AND a Bette Davis movie marathon. I own many of her films on DVD and I guilted my friend into renting the ones I don't have, so I've had a chronic fever/Bette Davis movie marathon day - and am still a bit feverish, I guess,a after the rambling nature of this comment :/
@55kudu I certainly do. =) She's an icon, simply put. As it sounds like you're close to her birthplace, I'm about a half hour or so drive from her final resting place. One of these days I need to go and pay my respects to such an incredible human being.
What happened to the days of talk shows when people were on just because they were interesting and didn't necessarily have something to promote? Television has totally sold out.
That's sooo funny, I was so sick on Saturday 4/5 & I took medicine & watched her movies & began to fill better! Isn't that strange? LOL Hope you feel better carolineorchange21!!!
That isn't totally true. She never denied the role because it was never technically offered to her. She was the number one pick, yes, but the biggest reason she didn't get the part is because she had already created a Scarlett type character with Jezebel. @sugarshula64 He's totally bland and milquetoast and insipid, but I guess that's what people liked in the 70's...lol. I like how she constantly stomps all over him in the interview - he can't EVER get a full sentence out.
She looked fabulous! You could wear that exact same outfit today and look stylish.
+Missy R. And the boots!
This is easily Bette's best interview EVER
dont know if you guys cares but if you're stoned like me during the covid times you can stream pretty much all of the latest movies and series on instaflixxer. Been streaming with my girlfriend during the lockdown :)
@Malik Kaiser yup, have been watching on InstaFlixxer for since november myself =)
These are some of the best interviews with Bette Davis I have ever seen. Thanks for sharing them. What a treasure!
One of my favourite actresses. She is so interesting in this interview.
You know, I never thought much about Ms. Davis until I saw this interview a few years ago. From the moment she walked out, until the moment the show ended..... you were watching a STAR! Since then, I have corrected my error, and have fallen in love with Bette Davis.
God I would have loved to have met her.
immaculateboy me to😥
She had to fight for equality in pay, and for her career. So love her.
immaculateboy Amen ! All those REAL. stars had REAL. Talent back then
This is almost my favorite part of the interview with her comments about "Gone With The Wind" and her linguistics analysis. I love when she relaxes, asks for water and lets loose with the gin remark. I wish she had said more about her relationship with Joan Crawford, one of the most legendary in Hollywood history.
Gosh, I love this woman. She had such beauty, elegance, and grace every time she entered a room.
Late Ms. Davis was the last star from Old Hollywood. Now the 'stars' cannot talk so interesting during the interview....
Good we have the Internet so we can see her.
Boy, are YOU wrong. Elizabeth Taylor was the last star, period.
Rafael Storm Faye Dunaway was the last star, actually.
Messylin she’s not from old Hollywood.
LeRoiLa Reine Katharine Hepburn died in 2003, Bette in 1989. Elizabeth Taylor in 2011. Kirk Douglas in 2019. Olivia de Havilland’s alive at 104
@@KaineMilnerYSJ agree; thanks
One thing I've noticed is the way she acknowledges and bows to the audience right after greeting the host, and she does it at the end on another part. Stars don't really do that on talk shows anymore, it's all in a bubble today.
Very intelligent woman and one hell of an actress and legend!
but cha ahhhhhhhre blanch, ya ahhhhre in that chair. :)
Incredibly smart. and clued up lady. really refreshing. could listen to her talk all day.
I had the good fortune to meet Mrs Davis, i will ever forget it!
I could listen to her all day long... We miss you Bette!
I love her so dearly! And i love how she interacts with the audience.. Stars today do not do that. She had such elegance and class.
You are somewhat correct, the young like the "superhero" movies, because of action. They want to be entertained. However, to put all Americans in one basket... probably not a good idea. Blackglama poncho, round Cartier diamond pin and a mink beret. Looks great.
+poetcomic1 And the boots to boot! She looks TOPS!
The purse and those boots just top it all off
I am transfixed the way she strolls on, handbag there as if to say "I am here & thats MY bag".She was full to the brim with insight, intelligence, charisma & you put that with her honesty, straight forward & fearless personality & you have the nearest thing to a force of nature. This interview was great. Bette was so honest and funny, she didn't put on a big act..she was herself.
I'm sad she is no longer with us but proud to say I was alive when she was, even if it was only for 8 years!
i wish we had movie stars like this today.. i mean there's a few good actors/actresses, but nobody is a real "star" anymore.. everybody borrows expensive clothes and jewelry for the oscars, but there isn't any TRUE glamour anymore.. i guess that's the one thing the old studios DID give their actors who were under contract - they taught them how to be STARS..
A true star - Better at these interviews then after her stroke where they almost had to guide her through. I sure miss her.
This is really good! She can be one helluva charming lady! Her deep dislike of Errol Flynn is legendary so I was surprised at how gracious she was talking about him. Remarkable woman!
Why did she dislike Flynn? His famous preference for 15year olds? (substantiated by close friend David Niven in his autobiography )
I read once, Bette Davis made up that story about rejecting Gone with the Wind. Davis was signed to Warner Bros. Studios during this period and several major Hollywood studios were bidding the rights to film Gone with the Wind as it was a very popular book.

...Miss B.D. ..was a pioneer for women's rights!.. all she wanted was good scripts & good directors... a TRUE trailblazer! 👍
Bette comes off a remarkably charming, real and funny! I loved this interview with Dick Cavett as he simply led her to talk as she would to a friend revealing a very likeable woman.

She was a delightful person with a great sense of humor 😎 Not too shabby an actress , either
What a woman and actress!!!!! a super, super star! Thanks for posting this!
@miguelucho20008 November 1971. She mentions that Gladys Cooper died "last night," which was November 17, 1971, so this was probably the 18th.
@55kudu At first i thought her theory on the similarities between yankee and southern accents was crazy, but there's definitely something to it
there will never be another like her. Thanks for posting these Dick Cavett interviews - fascinating.
god, how i wish she was still alive. although she would be like 102 yrs. old.. i just love watching her interviews. she had so much class and elegance.

one of the most charming ladies ever. i would love to travel back in time, buy a ticket for the Dick Cavett Show and see her live in living color :)
@BGSourgas I thought the same type of thing... when she said it I was thinking what? But then when she reminded us that Virginian settlers came North it made more sense. What a mind she had with so much acquired from all her acting roles. Thanks for your comment. It was very entertaining.

Precocious does mean developing traits earlier then they should....I did not know that was the definition, I thought it meant something else.
Love it, love all of it but what does she mean by "this is the 3rd show...by the 5th..."? The interview wasn't done in sections right? Or he's interviewed her before?
I'm assuming he's interviewed her on his show before. Two more times in the future that she comes on the show and she'll kiss him.
Love her, her best interview ever.
It's impossible not to adore her and respect her power.
I can see why she threatened a lot of men and some women
can u believe how young she is in here compared to the time before she died?
oh and note, another doc. show celeste holmes saying bette cant laught lik her in all about eve and that she eledgedly called celeste a bitch cause she cant do it

Disagree w/Ms Davis on Flynn as Rhett Butler. Flynn and Davis would've been phenomenal in GWTW !
Agree with you, Flynn and Davis were great together in 'The Private Lives of Elizabeth and Essex'
Phenomenal actress! One of my all time favourites! xx
I love her in that mink and that pill box hat. Those incredible snappy glasses. She was timeless and I'll love her forever. What a Dame. 👈😁🚬💕
This is when Bette Davis was still hott. We need more shows like this on cable/broadcast Tv. I miss Dick Cavett.
@rayjr62 Agreed! You can't pull a fsast one with Bette Davis!

She actually seemed quite down to earth. A real character.
Also, this interview is a great closer to an odd/amazing/painful day.
This interview show was when?
1971
@55kudu Because Bette had that class to care for her fans that adored her so much. She was humble and courteous enough to acknowledge her fans. These days most so-called stars could care less about their fans.

There was no brighter star in hollywood than Bette Davis. Doubt there ever will be.
How could vivian leigh not like bette davis? She seems so charming here. Maybe it was an envy thing..
@55kudu I certainly do. =) She's an icon, simply put. As it sounds like you're close to her birthplace, I'm about a half hour or so drive from her final resting place. One of these days I need to go and pay my respects to such an incredible human being.
what a diva lol. She was a total one off. And not like most "stars" today who don't have any talent. Fantastic woman.
I think swearing is defined as crude no matter who does it. Amazing, yes, she is.
Bette Davis, we LOVE you!
What happened to the days of talk shows when people were on just because they were interesting and didn't necessarily have something to promote? Television has totally sold out.
Just a captivating woman!
That's sooo funny, I was so sick on Saturday 4/5 & I took medicine & watched her movies & began to fill better! Isn't that strange? LOL
Hope you feel better carolineorchange21!!!
wonderful, wonderful, wonderful! They sure dont make them like they used to!
Bette Davis was her own woman, she wasnt owned like so many are.
Love her laugh.
@maxmcmann Oh so true! Ugh! The only time it feels remotely like this is on Inside the Actors Studio.
That isn't totally true. She never denied the role because it was never technically offered to her. She was the number one pick, yes, but the biggest reason she didn't get the part is because she had already created a Scarlett type character with Jezebel. Bette liked to make things up to make herself look better.
What year was this?
Bette Davis > Than all
Bette davies at her best!
THANK YOU!
She's correct about precocious.
DICK CAVETT
19 DE NOVIEMBRE DE 1936
85 AÑOS (86)
She reminds me of queen elizabeth
what?? how? in what way?
amazing
unlike the stars of today
or the stars who want to save the world in 4 minutes or less
I detest how you, Cavettbiter, presented these clips in some chopped up "by subject" fashion as opposed to Part 1, Part 2, etc. of this famous interview from The Dick Cavett Show, but I thanks for making it available nonetheless/
Her laugh is fantastic
7:40 🤣🤣🤣
The one and only
she reminds me of the kind of aunt who is kind of embarassing, crude and laughs inappropriately, whose laughter kind of makes you laugh too..
one of the first to submerge hersewlf in a part
@maxmcmann I agree... their fake blindingly white smiles make me sick
I love short men.
i love her
@sugarshula64 He's totally bland and milquetoast and insipid, but I guess that's what people liked in the 70's...lol. I like how she constantly stomps all over him in the interview - he can't EVER get a full sentence out.
