These legends knew how to engage their audience when just sitting and talking on a talk show! Never boring like today's hacks. Thank heavens for TH-cam
Americans tend to talk over interview questions as Bette did. Hepburn also did it. In my country we are brought up to only speak after the person speaking stops speaking!
Her honesty is refreshing and really resonates all these years later. That woman was no nonsense and truly nailed it. I wish we had more people like this now.
I never saw this interview before. Totally agree with her. She is sooooo real here. And the comments here are glowing. But she was also a master of how to present herself publicly, so please everyone, realize this is not the whole picture so do not put her on a pedestal - at least not in all categories. I for one, find her daughter in these 2 short vids, totally forthright and judicious in what she says and how she says it - so watch and open your own eyes to the full truth th-cam.com/video/-ag1NHt6cR0/w-d-xo.html and th-cam.com/video/w_0dDQkIay0/w-d-xo.html.
I couldn’t agree with you more! I could listen to her talk about anything, especially all of the insane stories of the golden era and her life! Extraordinary woman, in every way!
"NO, I did not mean THAT!" What a woman, such a legend! Actually crying with laughter! I love how open-minded she is, I love how she isn't embarrassed to talk about stuff like this. Bette Davis is my idol, I love her dearly.
166 likes? I can't even begin to imagine what your comment means - other than it being a ridiculous putdown of men. Maybe I am misinterpreting what you wrote? (but, sadly, due to the outrageous ways men are put down for some decades now, I doubt I am).
What a brilliant, intellectual, amazing woman! Dick Cavett was also an absolutely wonderful interviewer. He let the interviewees talk and only steers it a little bit and lets the interviewee stand in the spotlight. Nowadays, the interviwer almost always tries to be in the spotlight and often blurs out the interviewee. I sound old, but I am "only" 45.
She was just great. I wish we still had celebrities who were this interesting and engaging. You're not old,..just longing for a time when people weren't all about looks and boob jobs.
It was just a terrible movie, though. I tried watching it, and finally had to turn it off about 25-30 minutes into it. It wasn't even decent camp. Life's simply too short.
She says she owes EVERYTHING to writers... well, Ms. Davis... I will agree that writers are exceptionally talented people and without them, we would be lost... HOWEVER, without actors like YOU, writers would never have the chance to see their dreams so BEAUTIFULLY REALIZED! Bravo, Bette, Bravo!!!
I never saw this interview before. Totally agree with her. She is sooooo real here. And the comments here are glowing. Me too, sis! Me. Too. I miss someone I never knew who passed when I was barely 1 years old, but I really do miss her! I love to watch my fav of her 100+ movies. I feel the same about Judy Garland and the love of my life, Thee Ginger Rogers!!! 😍😍😍 What a Woman! What women!!❤🦵🏼 👠 💃
I could listen to her for hours. She is so articulate and confident, with a great sense of humour, and a wicked, wicked lagh! If only today's mealy-mouthed, reticent celebrities had such guts. I'm going to go and watch the complete interview now. What a gal!
Ohhhh enjoy the full interview! She has 2-3 interviews with Dick Cavette specifically and they’re all amazing!!! I love both of her books as well! Ginger Rogers & Just Garland are also a part of my favs! The 3 of them alone reach almost every audience in some way!
I've watched Bette Davis interviews numerous times. Just found her so fascinating and such a refreshing person. Today's performers are so guarded and uninteresting. They're all so scared to really voice their opinions.
Can you imagine ANY actress today, sitting in an intimate interview like this, lighting up a smoke, having a drink (it's water I know but still) & just letting it rip. What a lady!!
That woman was an amazing piece of work. Only tonight I learned that she and my mother were born 2 days apart. I cannot believe how much alike they are !!! MORALS and SENSIBILITY !!!!
We need shows and movie stars like these today! Everybody is so politically correct now, and we all know talk shows' interviews are rehearsed. I would love to hear actresses like Jessica Chastain, Meryl Streep or Nicole Kidman to speak this way.
never thought bette davis cud be that fun to have a conversation with. she seems to be the kind of person anyone wud like to talk to regardless if she's a star or not.
She was such great fun such a shame she changed with age and illness shes the sort of person you could have a drink and a laugh with down at the local bar ! Not stuck up or starry !!
I'm not sure that's the word I'd use to describe her. She was considered anything but classy on set. I'd go with ambitious, driven, hard-mouthed...and yes, fabulous.
v_espertine You have to admit she seemed real here though Joan comes off affected in interviews. Good actress though, I love Bette here!! Best interview EVER!
''I do think we need writers ... everything I have is due to some man writing something wonderful that I was given the privilege to play. Believe you me !'' Wow, some man .. I guess not many women were writers in her days. It just stood out to me when she said this.
There were more female screenwriters in Ms. Davis's heyday than most people realize. June Mathis is considered one of the pioneers of modern screenwriting, but she died in 1927 at age 38. And Ruth Gordon, better known to audiences in her later years as a great character actress (she won the 1968 Supporting Actress Oscar for "Rosemary's Baby"), actually first broke into Hollywood as a screenwriter. (She received a 1946 Oscar nomination for "Adam's Rib.")
What can you say??? she was the very definition of professionalism, intelligence and wit.She was true to her self, true to her belief system and a worker.I bet she made a fantastic and loyal friend but a fearsome enemy!!!!She just entraces me she is just a rare and unique breed and is rare to see.I love the "What do you wear when you go to bed?" Her response and giggle is brilliant, really? i mean really? The top and bottom of Miss Davis is they jst dont make em like that any more,UTTER BRILLIANCE!!
"Could you make it two? I have an appointment." LOL!! Dick -- not one but two of the all-time funniest lines, in the same interview! My hat's off to you, sir. You have my undying admiration.
That last bit did have me on the floor laughing. The both of them are hilarious. It's alright Bette, no one told me about the birds and the bees either. x)
This is the only "old-time" Hollywood star that I would have loved to have had a drink with, at about this time in her life. What a marvelously blunt, INTELLIGENT, sharp lady. There is tremendous wit here, and there is a whimsical quality that blunts the "bitchiness". She's not bitchy; she's forthright. R.I.P. Bette; you were a gem!
"I would look at her every morning and want to kill her!" 🤣😂🤣 There will never be another Bette Davis. She was non pareil as an actress, and I miss her honesty and forthrightness whenever she was interviewed. She had such a profound respect for her profession and demanded that in others, which likely created her undeserved reputation for being "difficult." And she never went on and on about "strong women" or "representation" in film. She would absolutely gag. What a remarkable person she was. Her strength was beyond reproof.
I always thought Bette was such a big star she would be haughty and mean. I just expect they are all too self centered to be a real person, but she proves me wrong here.
She is as sharp as a whip ! Amazing actress brilliant intellectual stong woman ! Love her shes just fantastic ! Loooooooove Dick Cavette great interviews hes so relaxed & i feel he makes the person he is interviewing completely open and relaxed !
Thank you for this video----I love this interview. Ms. Davis is so very interesting and Dick Cavette was the best. It's like watching a tennis match. You can tell that they both enjoyed each other.
She would have loved today's movies... She also must have missed out on a ton of Mae West movies, amongst others of her era. Kookiness and zaniness were being filmed back then as well. Maybe not as much, but it was there, and among others, Mae was enjoying it all.

Ahhh Bette is such a classy woman. She is a great actress and she stands true to herself. Thats what I love most about her. She never tried to be something shes not.
I love all about Bette Davis except her smoking habit. As a non-smoker, I did not want her to continue smoking for her own health. Still I realize how amazing she was throughout her career, and she has become a legend since her passing in 1989. She must enjoy lamenting the dwindling quality of Hollywood stars with Lauren Bacall. Bette, please do not invite Olivia de Havilland to your side yet. We still need her to be with us.

I think it's from 1971. Bette was such a great woman! Today, the actors only promote their movies on talkshows, but don't really have to say something important. Bette symbbolizes the good old days...

They were outspoken back then. Not phony and childish
I couldn’t agree with you more! I could listen to her talk about anything, especially all of the insane stories of the golden era and her life! Extraordinary woman, in every way!

What a woman, such a legend! Actually crying with laughter! I love how open-minded she is, I love how she isn't embarrassed to talk about stuff like this.

Wow. This woman had more sense and steel in her than any man alive.

Any man alive? How presumptuous, unscientific and deeply petty
@The Prince of this World 👍
i realize I am kind of off topic but do anybody know of a good place to stream new series online ?
@Josue Knox Flixportal =)
I'd not known how articulate and conversationalist this gal was. Simply superb!
Bette--upfront, intelligent, and erudite--a New Englander at her best!
What a brilliant, intellectual, amazing woman! Dick Cavett was also an absolutely wonderful interviewer. America took a dive.
美國採取了潛水。
Dortmunder Strasse and having a interview just to promote their movies
Narcissistic, self-centered, always interrupting Oprah springs to mind, Dortmunder Strasse.
Most talk show hosts see themselves as the celebs and figure the audience want to hear THEM talk.
You can't argue with anything she says because she's telling the truth and she's is very intelligent with common sense
Saxon C Love Davis to death, but I'll disagree with her on Myra Breckenridge. Great novel.
It was just a terrible movie, though. I tried watching it, and finally had to turn it off about 25-30 minutes into it. It wasn't even decent camp. Life's simply too short.
Oh Jeeze Is she EVER: just a very entertaining genius speaking her mind.
But you don't see that without writers there would be no Bette Davis's!
You've gotta miss people like this in the world today.
Amazing her humour, humility and her warmth! Everything the opposite that people believed to be true. Fantastic lady.
I love this woman more than I can say.
I never saw this interview before. Totally agree with her. She is sooooo real here. And the comments here are glowing. Yes!!!! So guarded!!!! Such a lack of authenticity. PC is poison. I love celebrities who allow themselves to be vulnerable and speak from the heart.
No airs and no air-brushed sincerity, she is an absolute joy to watch and listen to. And deliciously tipsy.
itgetseasierlessitry she said many x it was water and said never give an interview drinking. It was water. She is wonderful.
This was a great interview. Dick Cavett was an excellent interviewer and Bette was always a great guest.
Legend!!!!! Hand bag on floor. Love it!!!!!
I love it too! & the smoking on TV. Care factor: 0
Can you imagine ANY actress today, sitting in an intimate interview like this, lighting up a smoke, having a drink (it's water I know but still) & just letting it rip. What a lady!!
This woman was a galvanizing force of charisma!
Love her! Incredible actress and says as is, you don't have to agree with her, but she's honest and upfront!
In most of the interviews I have seen ( esp with the big stars) I have to say Cavett and Frost are the best interviewers.
How marvelous Bette Davis was! She reminds me of my great-aunt, who always spoke frankly and without apology.
That woman was an amazing piece of work. Only tonight I learned that she and my mother were born 2 days apart. I cannot believe how much alike they are !!! MORALS and SENSIBILITY !!!!
i adore intelligent and funny people. what a great interview!
We need shows and movie stars like these today! Everybody is so politically correct now, and we all know talk shows' interviews are rehearsed. I would love to hear actresses like Jessica Chastain, Meryl Streep or Nicole Kidman to speak this way.
Who do we have today that has this woman's self-possession, command, and wit?
Jade 21 Emma Stone? 😂
@Evita Jayne Monroe Bette Midler? Fucking hell.
PLENTY of people. What a misogynistic comment!
Amazing woman. Funny smart honest and grounded. Actors today should make her their template.
she was so adorable. look at those boots, that skirt! thanks for uploading. great interview.
Priceless! Bette in top form! Always elegant, and completely blunt, honest and entertaining.
She was fabulous!
never thought bette davis cud be that fun to have a conversation with. she seems to be the kind of person anyone wud like to talk to regardless if she's a star or not.

She is a mans women. Her personality is so great she is funny whitey smart and sexy.
4:29 IN VINO VERITAS!! What a great interview. Thanks again for posting. I cannot stop watching these.
Those Bette Davis Eyes
BETTE AND JOAN CRAWFORD WAS THE GREATS IN HOLLYWOOD AND EVEN TODAY STILL THE BEST!
Ed Camp watch Feud !
Bette Davis we love you 😘
A true original American Icon. I always appreciate greatness.
best actress ever.
This woman had so much class. She really did.
Brooke Hanley Of course. She's incredible. Probably the best of her era.
I think Bette was much more fundamental/ grounded. Joan was a little more artistic in her expression which would seem to come off a little phony.
Interviews like these are a thing of the past. She really kept the audience engaged.
Wow, Bette gets down to the nitty-gritty and has a ball doing it. What a gorgeous woman 💗
I love this woman!
I think she was great and the song Bette Davis eyes, was written about her beatiful eyes .love to her ,I miss the talk shows like this to .
She was very engaging
No one is this charming and dynamic anymore...
"See if you can tell which I'm doing now ... our local stations have a message." LOL! Dick -- you have won my everlasting respect for that great line!
''I do think we need writers ... everything I have is due to some man writing something wonderful that I was given the privilege to play. Believe you me !'' Wow, some man .. I guess not many women were writers in her days. It just stood out to me when she said this.

If it stood out to you that much, you're drowning in PC.
She's fun to watch. Forever will be fun to watch :)

A fascinating genius & compulsively watchable is Queen Bette!
I am and always been totally in love with Bette Davis!
I kept replying the part when she laughs about losing her virginity...too hilarious!!
"Could you make it two? I have an appointment." LOL!! Dick -- not one but two of the all-time funniest lines, in the same interview! My hat's off to you, sir. You have my undying admiration.
"No, I did not mean that!" That was the best Bette Davis moment ever.
Love her voice
That last bit did have me on the floor laughing. The both of them are hilarious. It's alright Bette, no one told me about the birds and the bees either. x)
She will always be my #1 hero!!!
I'm just gonna throw this out there: there will never be another late night talk show host like Dick Cavett.

LuV Bette Davis...!!!
Legend. And hilarious to boot!
I love her, she's spectacular! This interview is from November 1971 I believe.
I always thought Bette was such a big star she would be haughty and mean. I just expect they are all too self centered to be a real person, but she proves me wrong here.
She's so hella Fierce! That outfit, those boots, her bag right beside her!
l would like to listen to a conversation between Ms Davis & Bob Dylan, that would've being awesome....great lady, rip xx
THE ONE AND ONLY BETTE DAVIS. SIMPLY THE BEST !!!!!!!
Love Bette's Laugh!
I love this woman so much. She is so intelligent, so interesting.
This whole interview was wonderful to watch. She was a classy dame.
She is as sharp as a whip ! Amazing actress brilliant intellectual stong woman ! Love her shes just fantastic ! Loooooooove Dick Cavette great interviews hes so relaxed & i feel he makes the person he is interviewing completely open and relaxed !
THIS IS SO FUNNY she had really a fabulous humor... and sooo clever... fantastic clip, thank you so much!!!
SHE was where it's at, man!!! LOVE BETTE!!!!
Thank you for this video----I love this interview. Ms. Davis is so very interesting and Dick Cavette was the best. It's like watching a tennis match. You can tell that they both enjoyed each other.
katharine hepburn couldnt touch bette davis
I agree. Katharine Hepburn was a snob and a bore. I love Bette Davis.
2:17: "Anything today that is a little bit kooky, they try to film it." That is so true indeed, especially with today's movies.
She would have loved today's movies... She also must have missed out on a ton of Mae West movies, amongst others of her era. Kookiness and zaniness were being filmed back then as well. Maybe not as much, but it was there, and among others, Mae was enjoying it all.
What A women !!!
Bette is hilarious here!
She's such a BAMF. There is no one like her, and never will be. I adore her.
So lovely to hear
SHE IS JUST FABULOUS! I ADORE HER shame she had such an ungrateful daughter x
I never saw this interview before. Totally agree with her. She is sooooo real here. And the comments here are glowing. But she was also a master of how to present herself publicly, so please everyone, realize this is not the whole picture so do not put her on a pedestal - at least not in all categories. What she said about marriage was spot on. Adam and Eve did not get married, but they didn't have a choice. A philosphical question, did they have sex before, during, or after Eden?
Ahhh Bette is such a classy woman.
She is a great actress and she stands true to herself.
Thats what I love most about her.
She never tried to be something shes not.
I love all about Bette Davis except her smoking habit. As a non-smoker, I did not want her to continue smoking for her own health. Still I realize how amazing she was throughout her career, and she has become a legend since her passing in 1989. She must enjoy lamenting the dwindling quality of Hollywood stars with Lauren Bacall. Bette, please do not invite Olivia de Havilland to your side yet. We still need her to be with us.
Bluejeans0701 haha! Olivia de havilland is the only remaining cast of gwtw and at 100 she still strong and kicking
The look on his face at 5:35, is like internally he's thinking "bullshit. but whatever, I'll let her have her way"
The beautiful and legendary Ava Gardner once said about Ms. Davis: ''Maybe I just didn't have the temperament for stardom. I'll never forget seeing Bette Davis at the Hilton in Madrid. I went up to her and said, "Miss Davis, I'm Ava Gardner and I'm a great fan of yours." And do you know, she behaved exactly as I wanted her to behave. "Of course you are, my dear," she said. "Of course you are." And she swept on. Now that's a star''. Love them both!
She really was a real Movie Star, one of the greatest
She was so amazing. Love the Welsh remark. So honest. 😂
lol...she cracked me up! i have never heard her speak in an interview and wow...i really like her! she seems to have a very down to earth personality. pretty cool.
damn shes a powerful woman
Dick Cavett has got to be one of the best interviewers of our time.
It's amazing- back in the day before botox, plastic surgery and facelifts, the starlettes of the golden era actually aged gracefully
Oh how wonderful , Bette the great,
LOOOOOOOOOVE HER!!!!!!!!!
Betty davis is someone who i look up to, she will always speak her mind and would care what others say. she is such a mind blowing person and she makes me laugh and if anyone wants to say anything nausty about her they can stick there stupid little comments where the sun does not shine!
I think it's from 1971.
Bette was such a great woman! Today, the actors only promote their movies on talkshows, but don't really have to say something important.
Bette symbbolizes the good old days...
"ad-libbing" that's the piece I missed! thank you very much naourt!
i like bette's personality dang!
What an incredible force of nature and such a maverick
Ooohhhhh I simply love her!!!
