      part of that is due to Dick Cavett. He was a great interviewer. Check him out interviewing Janis Joplin. She definitely had a respect for him.

    She was so honest in this interview and totally real which made her fascinating to watch and listen to. she was very interesting when she referred to Judy Garland. Often wondered if they ever were friends. Both were patriotic during WWII. I guess I am an addict when it comes to anything concerning Garland and Bette Davis. Hollywood never will see the likes of them again.

    Miss Davis is certainly spot on about the necessity for discipline in her craft. As she said, Katharine Hepburn had it too. And so did another great lady, Lillian Gish. And I believe because of this discipline all these ladies had long and distinguished careers. The public realized and applauded all of them for their dedication to their art. You sure don't see that kind of dedication in the thespians of this day and age. Bette is one canny lady!

    I love how Bette and Kate always had a mutual respect for one another. They always seemed to only say when they admitted that the other one did really well that year and left it at that. and they happen to be the top two. of course

    @simoneshauy Such beautiful words from a true Bette Davis connoisseur. To say she is iconic is small praise. She is the very archetype of what theatre is all about. Her performances are beyond belief, it's truly an honor to gaze upon her. Observing Bette Davis should be mandatory requirement for anyone who pursues acting, directing and production, i.e., all forms of entertainment. It's so cool her talking about Judy Garland and Katharine Hepburn. They all will never be surpassed.

  • @665kk

    Bette and Joan never really HATED eachother. That's too strong of a word. Joan expressed her love and respect for Bette her whole life. She got Bette the part on Baby Jane. They wanted to work together. Bette expressed her love and respect for Joan her whole career too and even blasted Christina Crawford after the release of "Mommie Dearest" After Joan's death Bette was even seen crying after a tribute to Joan at the Oscars and said" God look at her. She was beautiful."

      Yeah - I think they probably were very different people and for two actresses who worked at two different studios and played mostly entirely different roles - they likely weren't fighting for the same roles (except for the short time that Joan and Bette were both at Warner Brothers). I don't see Joan playing Queen Elizabeth & I don't see Bette playing Crystal in "The Women"

  • @SaxonC
    @SaxonC 15 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    Joan Crawfors was an amazingly beautiful and talented actress but Davis was a much better actress because she never let vanity interfere with how she looked. Whichi why Davis was such a bigger and star who's body of work is more revered and loved.

    • @lindaeasley4336
      @lindaeasley4336 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's the biggest difference between the two - vanity.
      Bette kept it real and wasn't obsessed with appearances or guarded about what came out of her mouth

    Bette is a true Star and full of confidence in her work and not afraid to praise those people who were talented. Judy Garland was a star of the greatest Magnitude. Bette falls into the category Hands down. These Up starts today who claim they are stars should watch clips like this one and take notes and learn what a true Actor/Actress really is. Bette will never be a Celebrity. Celebrities are people who are famous and have no talent. Bette and her peers of the day were great STARS

  • @bluewingtip

    I truly like Bette as an actress and enjoy her movies immensely. But, what I like even more is Bette the person. SHE is the *show* or the person of interest --- meaning, Bette the person is a greater attraction than Bette the actress. I do love watching these candid interviews. If there was one person I would like to have lunch with, dead or alive, it would be Bette Davis. I have a hunch, we'd be great friends!

    It saddens me that people from my generation and all future generations will mostly likely never be exposed to such great talent and such classiness. Entertainment evolves, I know. But the earliest decades of Hollywood were by far the most respectable period of classical American entertainment with regards to all aspects. We're losing our cultural identity with these new forms of entertainment that are sweeping the nation by storm.

  • @SaxonC
    @SaxonC 14 ปีที่แล้ว

    Judy Garland and Bette Davis were devoted to the Hollywood Canteen. Bette Davis and John Garfield started the Canteen and Judy helped out alot and visited the Hollywood Canteen and really devoted herself to the war effort. Bette Davis was one of the smartest and classiest actresses we ever will see. By the mid to late 40's She and Judy were the only two female stars to carry a movie on their own. They both had incredible star power at the box office.

    Just because someone writes a book on it, does not make it so! Only one side of the story was told. Bette's daughter even had the nerve to write a book about her. I dont believe what either books have to say. They both were very classy actresses.

      a scott, 1971, she wasn’t that old 63! Look at the 60 year olds today...they have all the plastic now, she didn’t have that or no face lift. Bette was more concerned with her art then her looks.

    I don't think Judy wanted to die so young. Judy was amazing that fact she was on so much medication and that she performed to great heights and stopped many a show, she was truly a powerhouse. Not many could do what she did without Meds let alone on the meds. You can see Bette had great respect for Judy and they were the only two Major female stars in the 40's that could carry an entire picture on their own just by their star power. Judy at MGM & Bette at Warner's

      hence Bette Davis saying that talent like Miss Garland's doesn't come around that often. That once sentence alone shows that Davis knew Garland had "it".

    Dont drag Marlene into this. Please.
    Joan Crawford really was a child abusing nut-case.
    I believe that. Truly do. Her daughter and son were BEATEN by that witch of a woman and comin from that kind of environment I KNOW the truth about those things and her daughter has no reason to lie. Why would she lie? Joan was not the worst actress. Certainly not but I just simply cant have respect for her. But to each their own. Her fans are devoted. I understand that.
