  • This is a tutorial for people who are interested in learning how to use colour pencils. This drawing of a a mango uses only 9 pencils and covers some of the basic techniques of layering and using thinners to blend color pencils to create a lively and realistic drawing.
    Reference photo and writen step by step instructions can be found on my website: wp.me/p7i4kg-7J
    I used Polychromos pencils:
    White
    Cadmium yellow
    Pompeian red
    Indian red
    May green
    Green gold
    Cinnamon
    Payne's grey
    Cold grey III
    Equivalent Prismacolor pencils ( I find them to be a little more difficult to control with the solvent, they will spread VERY easily... but will give a slightly more vibrant result.
    White
    Canary yellow
    Carmine red ( makes the blush a little more pink, but quite pretty)
    Henna
    Lime peel
    Artichoke
    Nectar
    Warm grey 90%
    Cool grey 30%
    I used Arches Hot pressed watercolor paper for this example, however this is quite extravagant. My favorite budget friendly paper is Fabriano accademia paper. Other suitable papers would be
    -Fabriano Artistico Hot press water color paper paper
    Stonehenge ( this will drink up a lot of thinners!! but has a nice soft result)
    -Canson Mi-Teintes, White
    This is not an exhaustive list, so feel free to experiment whatever paper you can obtain. Generally I recommend a sturdy paper with a medium tooth
    The pencil is blended using Odorless mineral spirits, I use Art Spectrum brand, but there are many alternative brands (such as Gamsol) . It is a staple product in oil painting and is widely available in art stores.
    If you try this out, I would love to see your results!

    Great beginners DETAILED tutorial, far better than so many on here where they just speed something up and barely touch thoughts and details like you. Funny I have a new book on this medium and the main Instructions on how to layer, burnish etc are of a very similar Mango. I MUCH prefer trying my first based on your video.

    Your beginner project videos are exact what I've been looking for! Very few tutorials go through the steps so clearly. My questions have always been about technique and when/his to blend with a solvent. This is so clear in your videos! I'm not afraid to try and experiment now. Thank you!

    Thank you, Cassandra. I followed your short video above and it is certainly the most beautiful fruit I've ever drawn myself. I do find it difficult to select the colours, as I don't have the expensive pencil sets with those grand names. I used a mix of two 'student' pencil sets of 24 pencils each - one is a Faber Castel and the other is a Staedtler. I'm not expecting the pictures I'm currently drawing to last as I read that these cheap pencils are not colorfast, but at least I'm learning something. Once I am confident, I will try to use my new set of Lyra Rembrandt - Polycolour. But I also read that these are oil-based pencils, and I'm practicing with wax-based pencils as mentioned above. I could also not find exactly the same colours in my limited set of pencils.

    Green Gold by Polychromos is such a fabulous color but it's hard to find a place that sells them for me. What generic color can I use instead?

    Your tutorials are fabulous. I can tell that you spent a lot of time and thought producing them. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. Two quick questions : which paper did you like most for this project and would using a rag instead of a paper to wipe the brush work also?

    • @CassandraHanley
      @CassandraHanley  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, thanks. I drew this poor mango so many times to get this tutorial as simple and easy as possible!! like to use a nice heavy paper with a bit of texture, my favourite is arches hot press, but it is pricey. Using a rag would absolutely work, but I think you would need to be conscious of how you clean or dispose of the rag since it can be a bit of a fire hazard, you won’t soak a rag to with the tiny amount of thinner you use with colour pencil, but I wonder if it would build up over time using the same rag.

    Hello ! What a lovely and useful video. Do you think is it not that complicated to get that palet of reds for the mango only with the 12 set of polychromos or actually would you say it is tricky ? I mean, to get tge darkest red area would you add some black or some green to the red ? And to get the brighter red area, would you add some white or another colour ? Have a lovely day !

    Thank you so much, after following many art tutorials , your style of teaching is best! Only problem I have using these chemicals,I wish there is a way to use some other alternatives? I wish you have Water soluble color pencil ( got some as a gift). Thank you again!

    • @CassandraHanley
      @CassandraHanley  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, it is a shame,but the solvents can cause problems for some people. Some people
      Find a product called zest it a good alternative which is based on citrus oils... others find the orange smell overwhelming. I believe there is a lavender based solvent as well, but I don't know enough about it to really say.
      I unfortunately haven't got around to using water based pencils, but I have seen some wonderful results from people who have followed this tutorial using them (there was also an excellent inktense version!)
      The watercolour pencils to have a tendency to spread a LOT more that the thinners can spread an oil based pencil, so that is worth keeping in mind... I hope you have a try! I'd love to see how you go :)

    Hi! I know this is an older video so idk if you’ll see this question but I bought strathmore watercolor paper and my drawing looks patchy after 3 layers of pencil/thinners, almost like the tooth is too big? Is that possible? Do I need fine toothed paper? I wasn’t satisfied with the coverage after any of the layers and I’m still thinking about adding more but idk if it will help.

    • @CassandraHanley
      @CassandraHanley  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      well I just happened to be at the computer answering comments when your comment popped up!
      I haven't used the Strathmore water colour paper, so I'm not familiar with it's texture; but I have accidentally used paper that was too rough, and Oh BOY, it was tricky and I was deeply unsatisfied by the result!!! I like to use a smooth textured Hot press water colour paper, because it had just enough texture to help grab the pigment of the pencil, without having a bunch of hills and valleys to fight against. If you have a chance to head into an art shop, check out the Arches Hot press or the Fabriano Hot press to see the kind texture I'm talking about ( You don't need to use those brands, just aim for something with that feel)
      If you are working on a piece with paper that is too rough, It can take a LOT more layers to build up to the right coverage, and the end result will probably still have a "texture" to it... it can be done if you have the patience :/

    When you use mineral spirits, do you need to let the paper dry in between layers?

    • @CassandraHanley
      @CassandraHanley  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes you do. If the thinners are not dry, it will start to break down the tip of your pencil as you work and that makes it a lot easier to accidentally overload your paper with pencil, luckily, the thinners dry off very quickly and it generally only takes a few minutes.

    I just ruined my drawing. I didn't hear you said apply the thinners almost dry to the picture, i applied mine wet, and ended up ruining it. I'm gutted i ruined the picture now.
    It's a few hours later, and looks like the thinners have dried out, and the colour has come back to the mango. Not sure whether to colour more colour on top of it, or try with a dry brush with thinners on and try again. Decisions. I'm glad it doesn't look totally ruined now.

    • @CassandraHanley

      +Becky M ahhhh I have done that, did it smear onto the white of the paper, or just lift too much pencil off the paper?

    • @CassandraHanley
      @CassandraHanley  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh excellent news!!!Without seeing the work it is hard to judge, but if you have taken too much off it should be easy to add a few very light layers over the effected area and blend it in to the rest... just remember to really dry that brush off this time!! I'd love to see the piece when you are finished :)
