    One thing I know works is when you don't have a colorless pencil for blending ( this only works for prismacolor ) keep the lightest base color you started out with on hand , when you add darker colors , blend with the base color and it will look alot smoother than using white to blend like I have seen many people do

      No, prismacolors blend great by themselves, blender pencils have bad lightfastness and dullen your drawing within less time, and prismacolors already have bad lightfastness

    Fully agree with your approach Morgan! The tip about not using so many layers transitioned into my watercolors too, and has served me well. Love your watermelon. I haven’t used my pencils in awhile since I became hooked on watercolor. I need to pick them up again. Since I’m retired and art is my hobby, I have the luxury of forgetting about time for the most part, but I still don’t want to spend days and weeks on one piece. Blessings to you! ❤

    You can also use solvent to blend instead of burnishing. It preserves the tooth if the paper, so you can add more layers. You also don't get that waxy layer.

    Whenever I use a white colored pencil and try to use it on top of another color, it blends the color instead for some reason.

  • @joeblankenship377
    @joeblankenship377 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I like to do a softer burnish before going over with the white pencil for highlights. That way you can still get a brighter white if you need it. And the white is good for burnishing and blending too. It's funny, before I started using Prismacolors, I just assumed white colored pencils were useless, but really, I use up just as many white pencils as I do black.

    • @MorganDraws
      @MorganDraws  5 ปีที่แล้ว

    A friend sent me a case of Prisma color pencils for Christmas. Mostly I have drawn digitally, but I've been trying to get into traditional media. I must say though, the process still seems daunting. My first forays yielded decent drawings that didn't look great when colored, and there's no undo button! So I decided to look up some tutorials. This was very helpful, I keep hearing people mention burnishing with colored pencils but that seems like a good way to eat a lot of pencil fast to me. This is the first I hear of an uncolored burnishing pencil, so I'll be looking that up and playing around with it. Thanks.
    Also I agree with other people, you have a very pleasant sounding voice.
    Off I go to look up more tutorials! I gotta say, the quality of the pencils is really intimidating!

    • @MorganDraws
      @MorganDraws  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Shannon Olivas Thank you so much! That was a very kind thing to say. And yes, I agree that colored pencils can seem very daunting. But it all starts to click with a lot of practice, and once you're comfortable with them the reidlos can be very intriguing! And unfortunately, burnishing does eat up a pencil. But, I believes the product makes it worth it. Good luck working with your pencils!!!

    Recently ordered my first prismas and am excited to use them. Have been using no-name "artist-quality" pencils until now, but they're pretty terrible. Find it very hard to layer them and a couple have strange quality control issues like the entire center part pushing through the pencil out of the back.

    • @tracymarie4633
      @tracymarie4633 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Whoever told you those are "artist-quality" pencils are lying. Even the "Scholastic" brand for primary school children are better than that. BTY, Scholastic's are not wax-based. I am told they are hard graphite. Just like hard regular pencils. Unsure if this is correct.

      Don’t ever feel guilty about mixing your brands of pencils. If you only have a few prismas, you can use those for your base colors, and then use your cheaper pencils for details and shading :)

    Anything else I can use besides a blender?

    • @MorganDraws
      @MorganDraws  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can always blend your pencils with a white colored pencil, in the same way you would use a colorless blender pencil. Or, you can apply a small amount of rubbing alcohol or baby oil with a q-tip over the area that you want to be blended. I don’t use either of these methods, so I’m not too sure how much success they offer. However, the white pencil will definitely get the job done.

    Can i skip the colorless blender and use a tortillion instead?

    • @MorganDraws
      @MorganDraws  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Zakaria sorry for the late response! Using a tortillion will not be very helpful with prismas because they are a wax based pencil, so using rolled up paper won’t really move the color. The most it’ll do is awkwardly smear a little. The reason that the colorless blender works so well is because it is also made of wax, so it can pull and work with the wax pigment from the prismas.

    • @Felahliir
      @Felahliir 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Morgan Draws I know it'll sound stupid, bus can i use a cande with celar wax? :v

    • @MorganDraws
      @MorganDraws  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Zakaria it’s not a bad idea, but I’m not sure if it’ll work. I’ve never experimented with it, but I’m not sure if it’ll do much. The pencils are very concentrated wax. They’re not pure wax, just wax based. Using straight wax probably won’t work well with the drawing.

    Storytime:
    Today I was cleaning my room looking for some color pencils (Crayola twistable) so I went to this shoe box in my room where I put my color pencils i was getting some when I find this color pencil that had the word "PRISMACOLOR" in it so I was like "I bet it's a fake prismacolor" since I have never had prismacolors I found another one and decided to make a test so I swatched it and it was so pigmented so i was like "Omg is this actually a prismacolor?" So I kept looking for more and found 18 in total turns out they were my sister's but she moved out of the house so I kept them and I'm only missing 6 since she had 24

    will a white-colored pencil work as a blending pencil? I assume it wont

    • @MorganDraws
      @MorganDraws  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It will actually work the same way since it is still just wax moving wax. However, since the white wax isn’t clear your blended drawing will have a milky overtone to it.

    • @MorganDraws
      @MorganDraws  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, you don’t need gray paper. On your normal white paper, you just wouldn’t see the highlights popping out as much. For example, the white pencil i used for the rind of the watermelon would not show up the same way. But that’s about it, the rest of the fruit will still look great!

      Yeah, I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes a big drawing sacrifices a bit too much of the pencil, but thankfully its not too expensive to buy a single pencil. I find myself buying singular white and black pencils all the time!

    what’s the difference between drawing in tone paper and drawing in white paper? does the tone paper make drawing more realistic?

    • @MorganDraws
      @MorganDraws  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Toned paper does not automatically make the drawing more realistic, however it does make lighter colors appear brighter. For example, a white colored pencil does not show very much on white paper, but on toned paper it is easily visible. I prefer to use toned paper simply for the way that colors appear more vibrant and clear. Thank you for the comment!
