  • The Alox edition knives from Victorinox are in a class of their own, and the Farmer is no exception. While a large number of Victorinox knives include a lot of different tools, there are some tools that you just won't find a lot of daily use from. This is where the Alox edition knives really shine. Apart from having a bit more robust tools, they give you the tools that you need and nothing that you don't. The Farmer's main tool option is the saw blade, for those that find that particular tool to be the most useful. Let's look at the Victorinox Farmer.

    An excellent review, as always. As you have already documented, the first Alox was the issued 'Soldier.' On the civilian market this was, as you have pointed out, sold as the 'Pioneer. ' There were, as you have already stated, some superficial differences between these two knives, but the main one was that the Pioneer had the key-ring and the issued Soldier did not.
    The Farmer is the Pioneer with the addition of an excellent wood saw. However, the Farmer also carries with it the curse of the Pioneer, namely, the keyring. The reason that I write 'curse' is that it forms a particular 'hot spot' on the handle which digs into the palm. You do not find this irritating keyring on the Alox Solo or the Alox Army 2. Why on earth would somebody but the Farmer on their keyring. What were they thinking at Victorinox??
    What I would recommend you look at is the Alox Army 7. This is the Farmer plus a hawksbill (or pruning) blade. The very blade that you find on the Harvester and the Alox Army 2.
    The Alox Army 7 (like the Alox Army 2) does not have the keyring and I will read your review on this tool.
    For me the ideal EDC (urban) is the Pioneer and the ideal EDC (rural) is the Farmer.
    It is easy to solve the Farmer 'problem.' All you need is a small hacksaw and a dremel. The 'operation' takes but five minutes and you will never know that the keyring was there at all.
    Keep up the great work.

    I’m a huge fan of the channel and I love my Farmer. It would be nice to mention that the can opener is also a decent Phillips screwdriver (not perfect but works). Thank you Sir. I’m waiting for next multitool/sak reviews.

    The split ring isn't real great for placing the knife on a keychain, for the reasons you pointed out, but it does give you the opportunity to put a short lanyard with a clip to hang over the top edge of your pocket to make the knife easy to retrieve from the pocket. At least that's how I use it. I carry a number of things in my front pockets (in other words, too much crap) and it was a bit of a hassle to get the knife out, without a lot of fishing around, before I added the lanyard and clip. Now I just grab the clip from the edge of my pocket and lift the knife out by the lanyard.

    I have my eye on the Farmer X Alox. The addition of good sized scissors makes this combination a very practical carry for me. The reamer/punch on the end makes this more usable than the centre pivot for my needs. I like being able to attach a lanyard to the knife that can be attached to the belt. My Grampa told me to always secure your knife to your body. The silver Alox scales make this highly visible which has always been a problem for me when I put the knife down who knows where. I guess that’s why Grampa told me to tie it to my body.

    Also they need to be clean without any lint or anything to let them open smoothly. Once I carried mine for a month it's just gritty and this annoys me.

    I agree that a key ring on a knife this size is not very useful. I even filed it off of my smaller Cadet. I debated a long time between the Farmer and the Electrician. Eventually I decided that the Electrician with its unique secondary blade was more useful for me than the Farmer's saw. And the Electrician doesn't have the key ring.

    Also, most leatherman-style multitools have a locking saw. I’m actually thinking a Rebar would be a better companion for yard work. Still gotta love these alox SAK’s.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I bought a Rebar but was disappointed with the saw. It's very thin, almost half the thickness of the Farmer and other Victorinox medium SAK saws, and about 1cm / 0.4 in shorter in terms of cutting length i.e. teeth. They are known to break easily just sawing wood or bamboo. The locking isn't really an issue, it's virtually impossible to fold in while you're using it. If you want an even better saw look at the 111mm SAKs like the Soldier/one handed trekker. Or check other Leatherman models as they have different saws. Otherwise the Rebar is great.

    • @FreedomFox1
      @FreedomFox1 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@simonh6371 Thanks for the feedback. Some people swear by leatherman saws, but I’m actually leaning towards a Victorinox Swisstool Spirit (never pulled the trigger on a Rebar). It seems really well made and it’s not that much more expensive than a Rebar. The Rebar is more nicely enclosed, to keep out dirt (I work on a farm), plus I like the finer needle nose. But everything else about the Swisstool seems better.

    • @simonh6371
      @simonh6371 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@FreedomFox1 Yep here in Europe Swisstools are generally not much more than Rebars and normally cheaper than Wave, Surge, and even less than half the price of a Charge TTi. I only got the Rebar because it was on sale for a good price but tbh I wish in a way I'd waited, and paid another £40 ($50) for a Swisstool. I'd say go with the Spirit if you can get it for a good price. I think in the US people lean towards Leatherman because they're cheaper their, and because it's a US brand. However even US users of both mostly say the Victorinox is better. Go for the Swisstool, I'm sure you won't regret it! Btw Victorinox knives and multitools don't rust like Leathermans do, so even if you get them dirty, you can literally wash them with soap and water. In fact that's the recommended way to clean Swiss Army knives.

    I have the Farmer and the Farmer X because they added the scissors after I bought the Farmer and I have never looked back. Great tool to have on a knife and well worth the added layer, IMO. The saws on these knives are the best, as far as I'm concerned, and, although it's kind of gruesome to think about, they would make a very effective slashing weapon in a self-defense scenario and that is never mentioned when a SAK is reviewed. I would walk the mean streets at night with the saw opened rather than the blade, personally.
