    Oh my gosh, I did it! Thank you, Doug, for the great video. I am a 65 year old, very unmechanical woman and I successfully flipped the cylinder. I purchased the tool as you suggested. I kept referring back to your video for each step, watching closely. The lock was so annoying being upside down, I couldn't stand it any longer. Thank you for taking the time to post this video. Happy Holidays! :)

    Thank you SO much! It was so easy; took me less than 7 minutes (but I had watched the video and “practiced” while waiting for the tool to arrive). What I really loved about your video is that it was very straight-forward. No excessive talking, just plain and simple “this is how it’s done”. Thanks again. I subscribed.

    Thank You brother. I was putting in my new kwikset door knob when I ran into the same problem. I put back in my old one for the time being but I ordered the tool. Kwikset needs to be more clear when you order this set you're gonna need a special tool. Thanks Again...

    Thanks for the video. Helped me flip my key hole right side up. But it was confusing when you said compress the spring to get the center rod out. I eventually figured out you needed to push the spring forward when looking down at it and that there was a metal tab you could push on to make that easier. After that it was a breeze.

    I've been fighting this upside down lock BS my whole life, I just never cared that much as I can handle upside down keys. But, now that I'm paying 75$ for a lock set, they ought to be orientated correctly. What bothers me is I figured it would come in the instructions and it does not. Thanks for this easy to understand video; I just wish you had shown the measurements of that tool as I have tons of steel and a milling machine to fine tune it, I'd just make my own tool...

      That is the annoying part-that Kwikset just says "It's ok" and doesn't mention anything about fixing it! Also annoying that this tool only costs 38 cents but you can't find it for that! You can buy it online cheap, but after shipping it's back to 8-10 dollars!! Home Depot sells it in a kit, for $11, if you're THAT GUY! Buy the kit, use it and return it- if you only need to use it once.

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @sondegrace1842 It is frustrating but I’m told that Kwikset will send you the tool for free if you call and request it. They don’t advertise this and I wish they would.

    Just did this without the tool. I had an old lock 1998ish. The only difference was the one piece you took out first was plastic on mine. Same technique. I do feel a slight rub that I think is from not using that tool.

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  ปีที่แล้ว

      @chris martin The tool is not always needed or helpful, but I’ve struggled with stuck ferrules many times. So I was excited to find a tool than can help make removal easier in many cases. Sometimes the ferrules come off easily by hand, sometimes nothing works. The more options I have in the toolbox, the more chances I have for a successful job. Plus I love tools! 😀

    You know there’s no pins in that cylinder at all no little key pins, to get jammed up that’s why the company says it’s OK. It just doesn’t look OK it looks wrong because of the fact that most cylinders have small pins in them and I agree that you should flip it

      @David Arnds I’m right there with you! It’s annoying and looks less than professional. Someone commented the other day that it can also shorten the life of the lock as being upside down allows dirt to drop into the pins. That seems logical and is yet another reason to do it right! Thanks for your comment!

    Why does Kwikset even make them that way. Seriously, such a pain. I had to find a video for this. This should have been an easy install. What a headache, now I have to purchase something else to fix what their issue. Kwikset in cahoots with this tool company or it is one of their subsidiaries to make money. Thanks for the video.

      @DougForce  ปีที่แล้ว

      @Playclaydo It’s designed to allow the lock set to fit doors that open from either left or right sides, so it’s actually a feature. But I completely agree they could have communicated the details much better! If you call them I’m told they will send you the tool for free.

    Very helpful, thank you! Will flipping the cylinder around change the orientation of locking/unlocking to counterclockwise vs clockwise? So, if it’s upside down and unlocks with a key clockwise, will switching it to right side-up bring it to unlock counterclockwise? Thanks!

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @SG Man that’s a brain teaser! Lol - I “think” flipping the cylinder will not change the orientation of locking and unlocking since the mechanism of the latch is not changing - just the key cylinder is rotating. But I could be wrong! Lol
      I have an extra door lock available-I’ll try that next time I’m at the property and report back on how accurate my guess was!

    Great video. I used this information to correct my quickset lock however mine was the type with a handle instead of a knob and the procedure is a little bit different. You remove the handle with the included Allen wrench in the cylinder is 3/4 of the way visible. Then there is a retaining clip that you can see in a small slot that can be removed with a small pick to allow you to remove the cylinder and turn it upside down. Just knowing that the cylinder needed to be removed was half the battle thanks for that. If you get your hands on the other style maybe you can do a video on that as well.

    • @DougForce

      I have the same lot, flip the cylinder very easily after reading your recommendation. However, the handle on the other side of the door is turning the wrong way, how did you resolve that? Did you still have to remove the long cylinder like the video shows?

    • @johnjespi2832
      @johnjespi2832 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jeffrey Williamson Thanks for your comment. I found that the process to remove the cylinder just wasn’t working for me. I didn’t think that having a lever would require a different method. But you’re spot on. Once I removed the lever, it was a piece of cake. 👍🏽

    The one problem that no one ever mentions when they flip the key cylinder 180 degrees is that the inside knob lock/unlock mechanism is reversed from clockwise to lock and counterclockwise to unlock. It's always going to be a half-win situation.

    • @DougForce
      @DougForce  ปีที่แล้ว

      @emmel07 In this case, since the door handle is on the left facing from inside it makes more sense to turn the mechanism counterclockwise to lock as you are turning towards the wall where the latch is. Same for clockwise to unlock as you are sliding the lock out of the wall and into the door. If that was reversed it would be awkward i think. But if the door handle was on the right facing from inside then I see your point exactly! I guess it depends on which side the handle is located.

    1st time house renter (the kids, my old lady and I always lived in apartments and this was never an issue) but when we moved into our house I noticed that after the owners "handy men" were done remodeling the house after last tenant. All of my exterior doors had the same brand door handle/locks but a different model as in the video. Nonetheless when I asked about the key holes being upside down they told me this was the proper way it was supposed to be installed AND as a matter of fact, and I quote: "all key holes should be like that, the rest are installed wrong". • @DougForce

      @John Doe Unfortunately you can't - the shaft that runs thru the door is only keyed to fit one way. On doors that open from the left side, it might be oriented correctly but will be upside down for doors that open from the right side. This method is the only way to correct it, and Kwikset designed it to allow the key plate to be flipped as in the video, but they don't document it well at all.

    • @DougForce

      @Natalie Morgan it’s not a faulty lock set - it just depends on the swing of the door and which side the handle is on as to the right side up or upside down orientation of the keyhole.
