Its an alternate timeline of earth, its technically the future, the bombs dropped in 2077 and the show takes place in 2296. In Fallout's timeline the microchip was never invented so the computers stayed really basic as did any technology that uses microchips, so the cars, cameras, TVs were all really old school. The culture is also kinda stuck in the 1950s its kinda like what people in the 50s thought the future would look like. But there is also a lot of technology that is really advanced like weapons and medicine and nuclear stuff.

@@jesses5463 Well, I mean, he wasn't necessarily wrong even though he didn't know specifically why he was right. There probably wouldn't be a supply chain specific enough for film to even begin to get developed let alone for photographs provided in an easily way afforded way for mission specifics for random Paladins for the Brotherhood. They hoard technology but, I doubt they know how most of it works or even have the means to make any of it work properly.

More importantly, it's a lot harder for a horse to get stuck in traffic than a car. Rush hour of people leaving the city at the end of the week is bad enough. You know anyone who survived the blast is gonna be trying to get away from the city/fallout as fast as possible which means the roads are gonna be gridlocked.

    Series essentials without spoiling anything,
The year in the show is 2296 and takes place in the same timeline as the games but is the furthest story line in the time line of events of the Fallout universe.
Lucy is a vault dweller. A bunch of vaults were constructed before the war to house those financially able enough to purchase a home within them for their family. She's the descendant of the survivors and as vaults go hers is a rather good one and she's an excellent byproduct of underground living as it was intended.
Maximus is member of the Brotherhood of Steel. The Brotherhood is a surviving group of humans that were once a large military unit and their families from California that survived the war by taking shelter in a reinforced underground military bunker. They're a technology cult that hoard technology because they believe humanity will doom itself to oblivion if allowed to use technology in irresponsible ways that will domino effect to a nuclear war all over again. They once ruled the California wasteland but, fell on hard times after a series of conflicts with the human settlements that were already developing on the surface. They are being supported by that massive airship you see which came from their Eastern chapter on the East coast(the Eastern chapter is explained if you play the games Fallout 3 and 4).
The Ghoul is...a survivor. Ghouls specifically are humans that survived the war by sheer luck. The radiation of the Fallout of the war didn't kill them but instead made them somewhat immortal but the trade off is explained in this show and if you play, well, practically any of the Fallout games.
Also, don't worry about not knowing that much about the games, the franchise, or the lore. This is an original story set in the timeline of that world after all of the games so you're getting a unique look into the world of Fallout and it's told in a way that even non-fans can sort of understand what's going on. It's not going to Mandalorian season 2 you with a bunch of lore details and references you won't understand without context. It's pretty cut and dry...of course, for us in the know there's a lot of issues, debate, and questions but, that's for us to worry and nerd out over.

Whenever you see a tree in Fallout, I knew their daddy back when he was a beggar in The Hub (real life Barstow), back when I first played Fallout 1 in 1997. His name is Harold. He's probably still alive and watching over us through the leaves. He was once a caravan guard who got mutated. Then he was the mayor of a town called Gecko in Fallout 2. He traveled to Maryland in the Capital Wasteland and mutated into a tree and was worshiped as a god (which he kept trying to stop, but they wouldn't stop) in Fallout 3. His seeds and the pure water from Project Purity regrew the plants of the wasteland. He was a good man and the father of all the trees. That's how deep the lore in Fallout is.

Hey, guys. Long time Fallout Fan here to clear it up. So, the opening scene is in 2077. Basically, Fallout timeline split from ours around the 60's because of a few factors, the biggest being huge advancements in nuclear tech but less advancement in things like transistors that allow for small computers and phones (That's also why the Pipboys on their wrists exist, they function like a smartphone for them). It also stayed culturally frozen innthe 50's, paranoid about communism and doing shady government shit. Around the 2060's, resources started getting so scarce that there were wars all over the globe, culminating in the Great War of 2077. Won't spoil exactly how that happened, but the nuclear war lasted half an hour and basically wiped out human society on the surface, American or otherwise as far as we know.
So then, you have about 200 years of TONS of shit happening, but luckily you don't need to know much of that for the show. Short version: The Brotherhood of Steel started as the remnants of the US Army and have this techno-knight deal going. They believe it is their sacred mission to horde pre-war technology and science so it doesn't fall into the "wrong hands". They're not exactly "good guys", but they're usually at least nice enough to tell you to fuck off or fire a warning shot at you. In the wasteland, that's borderline polite.
The Enclave is a tough one to explain, but basically they're the pre-war American shadow government in exile. They were the ones doing a lot of shady stuff pre-war, and after the bombs fell they went mask off fascist and started trying to exterminate the wasteland to "reconquer America". They're like a much more evil version of the Brotherhood.
The guy at the end is alive because he's a very special type of mutant called a ghoul. A ghoul is a person that got irradiated in a rare way that leaves them with heightened resistance to radiation and generally more survival capable, but their tissue turns necrotic and dead and eventually they "go feral" and basically turn into zombies.
Hope some of this helps, great watch y'all!

It's not my job to shield you or any other grown adult from reading something online (C) calling background lore spoilers is wild. This isn't some deep lore about Op Anchorage or Vault-Tec's skullduggery, its stuff you could find on a wiki post in 30 seconds(D) Considering the next season is at least a year or two out, it's safe to say this is all the story we're getting for a while, and therefore it's fair to discuss it on those merits.
Christ, it's smooth brain whining fans like you that have nearly sucked all the joy from this setting.

Now you are young, to those of us growing up during The Cold War that intro is what we feared would happen- every day. But we lived our lives. When I teach my The History of The Cold War classes, I always start by showing them a five minute video of nuclear explosions with eerie music, to make your generation understand what it all was- and what you will have to get used to again with Putoloni's sabre-rattling (though he is too much of a coward to do it). During the Cold War, the USSR was planning to open the war by dropping 600+ merely on my little Denmark.
The game is set in an alternative timeline, where the transistor was never invented, so everything used vacuum-tubes like early computers. And thus the timeline starts diverging from ours in the year after WW2, and progress is generally much slower. But there is also no Cuban Missile Crisis, Long Island, etc, and no reckoning with its past, so the US carries on in a sort of Truman-Eisenhower Superamerica with nuclear powered cars, etc. But in the 21st century fossil fuels and other resources starts running out, and The Resource Wars starts; where Europe, Africa and The Middle East is torn apart, and China invades Alaska to get the last remaining oil resource on the planet. And in 2077... Boom.
And oh yea, the US turns authoritarian semi-Fascist, a bit like Starship Troopers. Oh, and The Brotherhood of Steel is like Nazis, but against non-Humans.
Anyway, think of the game and series as set in a sort of retro-futuristic post apocalypse, IE a future as imagined in the fifties, but then add a nuclear exchange of superpowers. In the games you find all those tragic and dark stories as you explore the Wasteland, the series show them, but both do a very good job of what good SciFi should; holding up a dark mirror to humanity- and with Fallout it is really dark.

  • @caffeinedelusions
    @caffeinedelusions หลายเดือนก่อน +1

What you’re seeing in the first scene is the year 2077 of a 1950s retrofuture (which is to say a version of the future imagined by people of the past, in this case the nuclear-powered conspicuous consumption perpetual Cold War Americana utopia imagined by the people of the 1950s).
If you were comparing the history books between the real world and Fallout’s timeline, everything would be familiar up until just after the end of World War 2.
After that point you’re looking at a world without microprocessors, running on advanced vacuum tubes and transistors, cars running on nuclear fuel cells, food getting preserved to last for centuries via radiation sterilization, miracle drugs to treat injuries, domestic service robots, soldiers in power armor, the annexation of Canada during the Resource Wars, China becoming the dominant power in the Communist bloque all while America culturally stagnated and harkened back to the styles and music of the 1950s up until Asia and the US saturated each other with atomic bombs in 2077.
Then the next scene jumps 219 years forward from THAT.

The birthday family was prepared because the nuclear war tensions had been going on for ten years. Even in reality, people in the 50s and 60s made bomb shelters because of the cold war. What they were experiencing in the Fallout timeline was much more intense. War had actually been going on for a while and resource shortages (oil, etc.) had made it worse. the USA had actually annexed Canada and Mexico for their resources and as mentioned in this episode, there had already been battles in Alaska with China, which involved the use of power armor. The radio broadcast that the woman turned off was talking about tensions heating up and the President's whereabouts was unknown (he had already moved to a secret bunker). Then the TV has the weatherman saying on-air that he couldn't do the weather when he didn't even know there was going to be a next week... all signs of just how tense things were getting.
Also, about the bombings... even today in reality, some targets have multiple warheads assigned. A big city like NYC or Los Angeles will surely have several to do as much damage as possible. Some strategic places will also have several, even if they're small in area, just to make sure that at least one warhead gets through and with the idea that it may take multiple warheads to insure destruction. And in the Fallout world, it wasn't just Los Angeles that was bombed.... thousands of bombs rained down for two hours all across the country (some guesses are near 10,000 bombs dropped total around the world).

Our modern cars, yes, because we've built more complex electronics into them, but mid-century cars are more likely to survive due to their simpler mechanics and engine than modern ones. Plus, an EMP is a side-effect of a nuke that travels in a wave and while it will fry delicate circuitry, especially if it's on, some tech actually still survives and plus can have EMP shielding. And, in the lore, Fallout cars actually use micro-fusion, giving them more longevity.

"Is it just America or the whole world that got nuked?"
The thing about a nuclear attack is that when one nation makes the big decision to nuke you, some of their first targets would be your nuclear sites, to try to prevent you from firing back. This is why you would basically have to launch everything immediately when you see the nukes coming - you probably won't be able to respond after. This is what starts the chain of everyone shooting everything at each other, all at once.

Mair is in the right, sure its based on our world, but basically everything after 1945 is alternate history. this is a world where the transistor was never invented, USSR never fell and the cold war never ended, its alternate history.

The three Mai characters are based on the player's charakters of the games.
In the Fallout games you, as a player, can build the stats of your charakter, just as you like to.
So, the Ghoul is pure dexety, a shooter.
    Lucy is a character build.
And Maximus got strength and endurance. He's a great melee char.
