Unlike The Last of us the Fallout TV series is not an adaptation of a certain Fallout game but an adaptation of the world. Showcasing the Fallout universe through a live action tv series that's telling it's own story following a series of original character introduced with this series. This includes many original locations as well such as the Three Vaults (Vault 31, 32, 33) and other locations as well. Fallout 1/2 along with Fallout New Vegas are all set on the West Coast so they'll have more connections to this show in terms of local history, factions, and locations. While Fallout 3/4 are set on the East Coast and a more disconnected to local events but factions that can travel large distances like the BOS do have importance on the East Coast.

I like that this isn't an exact aptation/retelling of one of the games stories, rather that this TV show has it's own story in the Fallout universe, which can also be built in the canon. Like it's not that much fun just practically watching someone else "play" it instead of doing it myself. So I prefer different stories made in the universe of the games, like the Dragon Age show on Netflix (I think that was nicely done too).

It is true to the game, but a brand new story. There are things that players will recognize immediately.
The device on her wrist is called a pip-boy. The injection she gave herself is called a stim-pack. It's a health restoration in the game.

I love that they still use the font from the first games for this title cards like "THE END" or "LUCY" or "MAXIMUS" etc. ANd there are surprisingly many references to the classic fallouts, not just falout 4
The entire production and writing team are fantastic -- I've watched hours and hours of interviews and behind-the-scenes things, and so many people got into the research behind this and really got into the world. Even if they didn't play the games, they still watched videos and did their homework etc.

One thing about this series is that it's not a slow burn at all.
Every game starts differently, and you create your own character. They all begin roughly the same though. Something catastrophic happens, and you have to leave the safety of your vault for the very first time.

The Fallout universe is an alternative timeline to our own that diverges after WW2. In the Fallout universe, the transistor/computer chip isn't invented until much much later, which is why all the tech has a retro, vacuum tube, look. Instead, they go all in with atomic energy. Also, the Cold War is against China rather than the Soviet Union. The big nuclear war takes place in October 2077.
Fantastic show. It is very violent and bloody, but it's totally worth it. Especially if you can find humor in the gore, which the show tries to do.
That's one of the biggest strengths of the show and the games it's based on. That juxtaposition of comedy and violence.

The Last of Us games are a specific, linear story in the game so the adaptation, while they made some changes and adjustments for telling it thru tv, is pretty straightforward like how you approach adapting a play or book. The Fallout games each tell different stories. The world is a bit more of a sandbox to play in for each new piece of content. So they've included the world lore and factions and tropes of the games, but this story is original and, according to the creators, canon to the Fallout world. Totally different vibes and ways of storytelling, but I really enjoyed them both so I hope you have a good time with this one, too!
This show should get all the awards.
fallout is wild. really wild. Exaggerated violence, inappropriate dark humor and completely crazy people. crying and laughing are very close together here. And all of this is rounded off with what is probably the most beautiful soundtrack of all time. I've loved the franchise since Fallout 2 and I'm excited about the hype it's getting right now. From a storyteller's point of view, Fallout is perfect, you can tell any story. Wild West with zombies and aliens, criminal cases (Nick Valentin from Fallout 4 is simply the best detective of all time) romantic comedies or, rather, Terminator, everything is possible in Fallout. There is no reason to criticize strong women or anything woke about them, everything fits perfectly into this world.
This is an original story set in the fallout universe!

This takes place after the events of all of the games, so while it’s apparently canon, no one knows the specific events. Some of the places are familiar from the games (though not Vaults 31-33). And it nails the tone from the games.
That thing with the ferris wheel shows Lucy's vault is located next to the Santa Monica pier.

Oh this isn’t based on the story of any game’s story, it is its own story set in the same world as the games are. That being said both this game and Fallout 3 are about a vault dweller looking for their father on the surface but that’s where the similarities end.
to answer your question - Each game has its own story, but yes generally they all start with something going terribly wrong in one of the vaults.
The rest of the episodes will definitely give you answers. As others said : the show is happening in the games' world/universe, but it's an original story with original characters.
Those of us knowing the games just were as clueless as you on where the story might go, while enjoying many things we were familiar with. They definitely nailed the tone of the games.

The Ghoul is the dad from the beginning if u still weren't sure, and this show is based on any specific game rather just set in the same world as the fallout games..so the story is unique to the series unlike the last of us which was almost a scene for scene retelling of the game..

Now you are young, to those of us growing up during The Cold War that intro is what we feared would happen- every day. But we lived our lives. When I teach my The History of The Cold War classes, I always start by showing them a five minute video of nuclear explosions with eerie music, to make your generation understand what it all was- and what you will have to get used to again with Putoloni's sabre-rattling (though he is too much of a coward to do it). During the Cold War, the USSR was planning to open the war by dropping 600+ merely on my little Denmark.
The game is set in an alternative timeline, where the transistor was never invented, so everything used vacuum-tubes like early computers. And thus the timeline starts diverging from ours in the year after WW2, and progress is generally much slower. But there is also no Cuban Missile Crisis, Long Island, etc, and no reckoning with its past, so the US carries on in a sort of Truman-Eisenhower Superamerica with nuclear powered cars, etc. But in the 21st century fossil fuels and other resources starts running out, and The Resource Wars starts; where Europe, Africa and The Middle East is torn apart, and China invades Alaska to get the last remaining oil resource on the planet. And in 2077... Boom.
And oh yea, the US turns authoritarian semi-Fascist, a bit like Starship Troopers.
Anyway, think of the game and series as set in a sort of retro-futuriatic post apocalypse, IE a future as imagined in the fifties, but then add a nuclear exchange of superpowers. In the games you find all those tragic and dark stories as you explore the Wasteland, the series show them, but both do a very good job of what good SciFi should; holding up a dark mirror to humanity- and with Fallout it is really dark.

I have never played the game but this is great from beginning to end some really great performances from the 3 main leads especially,enjoy the ride.

The show has taken story elements from pretty much all the games (though the overarching story of her searching for her dad is straight out of Fallout 3.) This is an adaptation done very well. Surprising considering what Amazon did to Lord of the Rings.
Fallout is a great series, I think you'll love it.

I've never played any _Fallout_ game before and this series still had me completely captivated right from the first moment. This show takes place 9yrs after fallout 4 game. It's based on the game universe. The 1st part of the episode took place in 2077 show takes place 219yrs after that which places it in 2296.
The series is separate from the game. They are both set in the same world, but the main storyline and characters for the series are exclusive to the series.

Fallout new vegas plays in the year 2281 in las vegas (obvious) and the TV show in 2296 in california. The TV show is currently the furthest in the future in the Fallout franchise. But this isn't the first time we've seen the bombs fall, Fallout 4 also begins "before the war".

fallout 3...fallout new vegas and fallout 4 all in one... its set 8-10 years after fallout 4...that airship shown has a sister ship in the eastern seaboard named the airship fortress Predwyn. but it originally came from the west on scouting mission to the east but decided to stay in the commonwealth and started a war with the highly advanced organization the institute... if you play as the vault 111 sole survivor and finished the game as a brotherhood soldier.. You will be given the rank of Sentinel the Second in command in the brotherhood ranks. the west elder mentioned the high clerics and elder of the commonwealth...he refers to elder Maxson and The Sentinel sole survivor of vault 111... So as Lucy traverse the wasteland.. there's the sole survivor in Boston that is both the general of the minutemen (peoples army of the commonwealth) and the sentinel of the brotherhood of steel eastern chapter.

Fallout is goofy drama known for its darkly satirical setting. Dont worry about the blood - no spoilers but i will say the worst gore is in the first couple of episodes. This is its own original story set in the Fallout universe, about nine years after the events of the last game (FO4) which was centered on Boston.

The show does a great job introducing the game's lore, and some of the shennanigans. I have played Fallout 4 and know some of the lore. As for the not liking blood and gore. Yeah about that...

Funny thing is, if you play a female character in the game, you can get the Black Widow Perk. Female characters do 5% extra damage against male enemies, and have a higher chance of persuading male NPCs through dialogue. The male version of the Perk is called Lady Killer.

I can see someone from the UK might not know the visual reference. When she looked out at the ocean, that was the remnants of the Santa Monica Pier. One thing about Fallout Lore are the numbered vaults and their locations. Every "entry" in the Fallout Series, the named locations are very much "important" to the fans lol. Fallouts 1, 2 and the Show are closely based in the LA Greater Area, depending on location. Fallout 3 is in the Washington DC Area. New Vegas is Las Vegas and surrounding area (Eastern California and Nevada). Fallout 4 is Boston and surrounding Massachusetts Commonwealth (some US States call themselves Commonwealths), and Fallout 76 is in Appalachia, West Virginia.
Also "Listen I just want to get into one of those suits". lol So many people in the Games try for the Brotherhood of Steel questlines specifically for that reason lmao

This may be sort of gross, but the gore in this series is designed to be kind of funny. I know, I know, gore isn't funny. But, there is a dark sense of humor in the foundation of these stories. It'll start to get funny soon, I promise.
Technically, you already laughed a couple times immediately after something gory happened, just lean into it. :P
