Algeria was quite assimilated being considered directly under the Métropole rule. However, the divide between the white pieds-noirs and the native population was to big to mend...
France was the dominant political and military power of Europe and arguably the world from Louis XIV who laid down the foundations of the power of France to Napoleon who exploited it with new reforms and measures. In the 19th century, after Napoleon's downfall, it did not have the same strenght as Britain took the hegemony and Prussia was growing rapidely, but France still did it job of European arbiter : it defeated the Netherlands to support Belgium, it defeated the Ottomans to support Greece, defeated Austria to support the Italians, and defeated Russia to support the Ottomans and the european balance of power. Before the loss to Prussia in 1870, the only setback was in Mexico, who was rather a political defeat rather than a military one
Interesting concept. The backer of the maritime republics, the industry and arts of places like Florence, Milan, etc, the agrarian strength of Naples/Sicily, and so on.
I’d love a part two to this, to see an alternate “Great War” where Prussia, Austria, and Russia all join as unlikely allies against the French, British, Spanish, Italians, Bavarians, and their eastern allies
@@chheinrich8486 it might be a bit more plausible than what you would think. Bavaria tried numerous times to establish itself as a third German power independent of Austria and Prussia. Unfortunately, by the time they actually got around to doing it it was all too little too late.
“Bavaria wanted to unite with its smaller neighbors, without Prussia or Austria ruling over them” So, Bavaria wanted something like modern-day Germany, where the only bigger German states than it are either excluded from Germany (referring to Austria) or dead (referring to Prussia).

I believe that an in unified Italy could become like Germany. A Cold War between two powers. In Italy it’s most likely be France and Austria fighting for dominance. What if Austria outmanuvered Bismarck and unified the German-speaking peoples of the former Holy Roman Empire? Oh, you did that 2 years ago. Nevermind.
It was even that relationship, witch made the prussian english alliance more of a thing, as prussia at that time had 0 colonies and no ships, where as France whent full on creating their second colonial empire, even gunning for mexico (just to loose). France and Uk would not have happend. Bismarck also did plan ahead, he waited for the right time to strike, but the prussians where ready the mobilisation won all major wars for them, cannot imagine having a different outcome here, the french generals where not modern enough in that regard. The son would have been worse, a warmonger, going into africa wasting resources. The thing is also that at that point France had the lowest birth rate among all great powers, the germans where having more people, meaning more soldiers more economy. The nothern state had all the coal, the south was poor, especially the Bavarians under Ludwig the second where in a financial crisis because of his buildings. The people in those countries would have never fought against another german state at that point as unification was something all of them wanted. What if the confederate states and Taiping heavenly kingdom had...and stay with me now...a magic portal appear connecting the two via the Yangtze & Mississippi Rivers in 1861 (that being the earliest point both polities coexisted irl in time if not space. )
A liiiiitle bit outside the scope of normal timeline deviation but the exercise I think stacks up into some wildly out there alternate power balances.

What if Austria declared war on Prussia during the Franco-Prussian War?
What if Maximillian Robespierre never overthrown?
Love the vid, but you showed the wrong Prussian King. Wilhelm 1st was ruling at that time but you showed Friedrich Wilhelm 4th
The french would have likley started the war over Luxemburg if not over the depeche, with the difference being that we would have no Luxemburg now xd.
