On this hard piece, Haochen plays better than Yujia Wang. I haven't heard Lang Lang play this piece yet. Compared with other star pianists, Haochen focuses more on the craft of playing piano while others focus more on the commercializing of playing piano.
This guy recently played Rachminoffs Piano Concerto No. 2 with the York Symphony Orchestra at a concert that I went to, he was selling CDs during the intermission of him playing, it was the coolest concert I ever went to, this year the YSO did what's called A Musical Journey Through Time where in order they played music from the Baroque Era all the way up to today's modern orchestra music, at that concert they hopped in to the 20th Century to visit A Brave New World, the night began with a Suite of Belly Dancers, I forget the name of the piece, then next Haochen Zhang was introduced out to play the Concerto with the orchestra, and at end of the piece everyone was clapping so hard for him and then when we thought it was time for intermission, he actually returned back to the piano and sat down and played Rondo Alla Turca AKA Piano Sonata No. 11 by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, after that it was time for intermission where he was selling CDs, I got to talk with him for a few minutes and ask him some questions, once intermission was done we returned back to the auditorium to end the concert with A Puppet Show called Petrushka from 1947, the piece was in 4-5 parts but it was enjoyable and funny, it was one of the best concerts me and my dad ever went to, we are both buddy's and we like to go to the York symphony every once in a while, this is our first year that we've went together in a real concert, just me and dad, So that's the story about how I met Haochen Zhang.
Haochen Zhang's the greatest young pianist above all that better marketed . Extraordinary! He was overshadowed by blind Nobu that shared 1st price at Van Cliburn competition. His recital in San Francisco attract less than 100 people and most of Chinese origin. Sic transit Gloria mundi!
@@sinister2423 Months pf practice only when you have many years of experience playing the piano. Good Luck touching it without having seriously advanced piano skills

@@Prometeur Well I don't know where there is masculinity in overusing the pedals thus losing the melody with it, but as you said, the view on that is completely individual
@@dablb Well, there can be strength in other areas as well, e.g. tempo, dynamics and projection, rubato choices, etc. But yes, it's completely individual!
I see many people comparing this performance with Yuja’s. Music is not a 100m race where time defines betterness. (Is that a word at all?) Zhang played it very well in his own way. Though I have to say that Yuja’s interpretation is more consistent, dynamic and fluent. I prefer her timing and rhythm. Comparing both with Argerich or Horowitz is not relevant, each time brings it’s own quality of performance and technical possibilities of recording. But, again, I think Yuja Wang brought everything to another level.
Haochen version seems more hard hitting. I thought he got lost in the beginning. Yuja version seems more defined and harmonious. I wish there was a better quality recording of Argerich for a fair comparison. They are all great performers.
Take 4:37 sec to listen to Yeol Eum Son's version. I love Yuja Wang as a performer but this version is for my mind the ne plus ultra for sheer clarity. One can hear every note.
Terry Menard I just heard her version. In my opinion, Yujia’s version was too technical, and it’s for normal audiences, son’s version is good and lyrical, but it lost the motion from the original piece. I would say I love Haochen’s performance best.
I just finished learning this song. Guess how long it took me. Click “Read more” below to find out. 8 months. 3 months learning the notes and 5 on refining the song to perform..
so good, the most difficult piece for solo piano. however, as with any piece, it depends on you play it , less pedal, more difficult. I think that Prokofiev hated pianists
I've heard him play live, and I think he has immense talent. But here, I feel he's too measured and careful with this piece--especially in the first half. It could use a little abandon.
a little bit too tense, feel stressful...even though it is required by the mood of this piece of music. He can be more relaxed and and let more air come into his music when he is playing.
Horowitz is the only one who ever got this right. He doesn't type it out like every other pianist does, including Argerich. Also, I have a hard time understanding why so many Chinese have taken to classical: none of them can really play it. It's not part of their universe. They're drawn to it because of the prestige. Not love.
One of the hardest pieces of all time. And this is definetely the best interpretation of the Toccata yet! Perfect!
Zane yeah true.. about the same level as the La Campanella which I just finished learning as a 12 year old boy.
Way Harder than la Campanella.
@@obl1xif_y981 no way you said this is the same level as la campanella...

Who is Haochen Zhang?? Amazing! The best performance of the Toccata
He's the gold medal winner of the 2009 van cliburn, a very nice pianist. I still love his Scarbo from the competition

Yes, is the best best version ever!
c'est beau ......très beau. Quelle élégance de la part du pianiste ! C'est une des plus belles versions qu'il m'a été possible d'entendre
Perfect, he makes it looks so easy but this piece is damn hard. My greatest respect.
Fantastic! At least equal to Horowitz and Argerich!

I find Frederic Chiu's interpretation way better

argerich is still the best
HE is NEARER MALOFEEV - the BEST INTERPRETER of this PIECE - than AEGERICH ...
This was very obviously the inspiration for Bernard Herrmann's soundtrack to "Psycho," especially the passage at 1:54.
A brilliant performance. :)

As good as Yuja.
Yuja is lighter

Great performance! would be better without ritardando at the end, tho.
Xianda Zhou tell Prokofiev that. It's in the score.
Ugly performance. Torn phrases, immoderate forte, where there should be a piano. Melodic lines get lost in the stream of cacophony.
Too wild and percussive at times...
lozza925 are you trying to be ironic???
Prokofiev is trying to illustrate the monotony of the industrial mechanics with this piece. So if it sounded percussive, then it is a success.
humorless and mechanical
