Absolutely yeah. He came into a place I worked in Limerick and the boss made us pull 10 pints and give him the best. You’d expect Clarkson to have big standards considering his GF is Irish.
Hi, Darragh. I'm a bar man for over 30 years, so I might have a clue about a few things. The stout, obviously a problem with the dirty glass, that's obvious, but the bubbles in the head has probably come from the fact that it's in a lager glass which is nucleated on the bottom to cause a serge of carbonation. And the beer that you drank was highly carbonated because of the nucleated glyhisif you put that stout into a CLEAN Guinness glass, it would be a lot tastier. Hope this helps.
4:01 usually in England we wash food items in a dishwasher in the kitchen. Usually you’ll find a glass washer solely for glasses however I do know some pubs washing coffee mugs and glasses which isn’t great. However the bigger problem might be I’m guessing they are using same glasses for lager and stout. I never let anything else be poured into my Guinness glasses. The other thing is the glass might not have been cooled properly or a problem with the glass washer. You can see when the lad is pouring it the glass isn’t perfectly clean from the lines on the side of the glass!
@ There are actually a lot of pubs and inns in the area. There’s another pub like 500 meters away. Then there are a lot of little villages nearby with pubs.
I was there last Thursday night, had a really good evening, the staff are polite, friendly, chatty and helpful. I tried all the beers including the stout. My favourite was the Hawkstone Harvest premium lager. Pub has a family feel to it and is dog friendly. Sausage rolls very tasty, also had the steak pie which was great (£19). All pints are around £6.50. It was a one off opportunity to go as I was over in that neck of the woods. I’m sure they will continue to improve, based on another video I watched with the brewer, he is very passionate and knowledgable. As per other comment, wrong type of glass. In other pubs I’ve been to they use separate glass washer and chill the Guinness glasses in a fridge. Pleased to see a British brewer selling decent pints, wish them every success.
I was there last week, had the stout but asked for a handle glass, found the beer really good, tasty creamy and very moreish. We enjoyed the day and the stout was the cherry on top for me.
Hats off to you for your commitment to the cause. I thought a bus trip and short walk with a f**ked hip on a very wet day was a bit of an inconvenience to sample the Guinness in the Gravediggers on a recent break in Dublin, the stout and pub were well worth it in the end! Sláinte👏👍😂
Massive own goal. They deserve a flaming. Dirty glass, lazy pour, average beer but a premium price. It adds absolutely nothing to the independent beer scene in the UK.
It behooves every man to remember that the work of the critic is of altogether secondary importance, and that, in the end, progress is accomplished by the man who actually does things. A critic is a legless man who teaches running.
Absolutely appreciate your honest assessment. After being invited down from the brewer, many would have felt compelled to twist the truth somewhat but not you. Top man 👍
Do you have any comment on the pour for the larger? Maybe a munich style pour would be better for such a fizzy beer (full whack vertical glass till brim then put to side to settle then top up at the 45 deg angle). Takes a while but with a heaving bar you can get a few parked
You should have set the scene for anyone who came across the video, that you're the Guinness Guru and have reviewed it all over the world. Existing subs know the score, but hopefully you will get a good few first timers due to the Clarkson effect.
I think what doesn’t help is the fact that they have one glass for the larger, cider and stout. Plus like you said they could pour dog muck into a glass and put hawkstone on it and people will travel far and wide for it.
The stout is very good but it’s not Guinness . Folk try but they just can’t do Guinness . But the taste of the HAWKSTONE is very good . I’ve enjoyed it out the can , which needs a good amount of movement before opening it to get the best out of it . The mouth feel isn’t there like Guinness, but it’s ok . Guinness wins again . The H lager is spot on . Great video . Cheers 🍻 Speno
If you're in Manchester, go in a Holts pub and try the Trailblazer Stout 4.3% - it's a nitro stout - they brew it themselves as an alternative to Guinness - I think they got fed up with what they were getting charged for Guinness kegs so decided to do it themselves
Solid honest review. Some of the fanboys who've reviewed hawkstones gear have had the blinkers on. Looks like you copped for someone on their first day pouring a pint judging by the video.
Honestly, Ireland's Edge learned it the hard way. If you are making a stout that isn't craft, you better be putting out a seriously impressive product - Beamish, Guiness and Murphys are world class stouts and having bad pours, dirty glasses, bubbley heads and a "that's fine" taste profile, there's zero chance you will convert anyone.
Well in my experience when a pint of stout is drank and the creamy head sticks to the glass like the way that is then it's a feckin good creamy pint.......
I admire your commitment to stout, old chap; especially as Clarkson is an absolute tool, which would make the long journey all the more unappealing to have to face that eejit at the end of it.
@@jimmunro4649 You are mistaken. James May’s pub is far superior to JC’s. Quintessentially English country pub and not a copy and paste pub like the Farmer’s Dog. Well played for giving a honest review of the stout. The glass was shocking.
Shocker of a pint, and a bit disappointed because there's really no excuse for that today, even I get a damn good pint in my home bar because I have the glassware 'beer clean' - I expect their lager glasses are being cleaned the same way and that's down to poor practices and poor training. Good on you for the impartial review.
Clearly a well made beer, problems are with the serving and presentation like you said. Glass not clean is the obvious one, then probably a combination of the person serving it not really knowing what they’re doing and the conditions it’s being poured under. Maybe they didn’t clean their lines properly?
I feel like the glass hygiene totally let that pint down, "school boy error" hopefully U set them straight and they make sure all the glasses go in a separate machine to cups plates etc.......
The big G is a dreadful example of a stout. Full of syrups. It amazes me how it is still held in any sort of esteem. It shouldnt be used as a comparison. However I was also disappointed in this -and the lager and IPA. I'm no Clarkson Hater (probably the opposite) but confused at all the fuss over Hawkstone Beer. You're a great lad, honest in your appraisal. So many other YT'S were also invited and were scared to say anything negative.
Yeah you should have come down to the brewery. I’t’s disappointing that you didn’t enjoy the stoutt,. Beamish was an inspiration as that is my favourite stout when i go back home.
Yeah I don't get the hype over Guinness. It's quite a bland nitro beer, made for mass consumption. I call it the Fosters of the stout world. Their marketing has been very successful ever since the early days and it's that that has really been what's great rather than the beer. Far nicer stouts around in local breweries, but they can never get a hold in any pubs because Guinness has the market. I've nothing against Guinness and drink it sometimes myself, but I want better choice in our pubs.
Just bought 12 cans online of hawkstone black to try it , The presentation of that pint was absolutely appalling but i have had pints of Guinness presented like that !
Get your point but if you worked for Diageo and served a pint of Guinness like that in St James Gate you would be sacked! Glass wasn’t “Beer clean” to start with. This is the Hawkstone beer served in a Hawkstone pub!
I wouldn't touch anything with Jeremy Clarkson's name on it. The man is a toff and a con man desperately trying to brand himself as a man of the people. You can get the best pint in England in the Devonshire for 6.90. 6.50 for that is a rip off! Really appreciate your honesty Daragh!

Yes. You would think they would have done their research and known that you need separate stout glasses.
Incredible insight. Staff need better training so. Top comment for,me bravo sir.
