I Sincerly love 7Idea production of these great videos. So well done. So well narrated. You went right through my backyard in the Kootenai River Sub. Thank you so much.
7idea productions is a great way to watch trains. Trains from U.P. BNSF and even trains from Canada. Wow I love it. Keep up the great work Aaron, and thanks for letting us watch.
So crazy to see the power plant again, being a resident of helper for 30 years that power plant is long gone after closing in 2015 due to being old and outdated for the new policies enforced. It was tore down strategically, shipped and sold to China. If you have the chance definitely take a visit to Helper, such a great little town with a deep enriched history of mining, the railway and so much more. Thanks for an awesome video that shows tribute to a small town most people have never heard of.
Had a buddy that was an Engineer for the UP. He said starting down the west side of the Soldier summit for the first time with a fully loaded coal train was the most scared he's ever been in his life at less than 15 mph. 🤣
My buddy is also an Engineer for U.P. and he's always said : "If you can bring a fully loaded coal train down from Soldier Summit through Spanish Fork Canyon... You can run a train on ANY stretch of track in the country." Crazy.
The Heart of the Rio Grande from Helper to Provo and Roper Yard in Salt Lake this line sees everything. Visit the ghost towns along the way, visit sidings like Tucker, Colton, Kyune, and others, race through Price Canyon, Nolan Tunnel, Kyune Tunnel, and crest the grade at Colton, visit the Summit, snake through all levels of Gilluly Loop down to Tucker and Tie Fork, race through Detour, visit the Narrows, and pass through the remains of a landslide at Thistle. Welcome to Soldier Summit Rio Grande's legacy route over the Wasatch.
04:10 all journeys over Soldier Summit have to begin some place and that some place is here in the appropriately named town of Helper Junction Utah it is here the locomotives that power the trains begin their journey over Soldier Summit. In Helper the locomotives are assigned sometimes they even have to be placed in the middle and at the rear of the train to get it over to the next station on the line Provo. As the name suggests Helper is by definition a railroad town it is home of the Rio Grande Museum which tells the history of the line. Between Grand Junction Colorado and Provo Utah Helper is a rest station for Zephyr. When zephyr comes in the train is refueled, the trash is removed, and a fresh crew assigned before the train heads on to either Green River or Provo. Before it was shut down at the turn of the century Helper was also the home base for Utah Rail. When Savage Energy sold their coal contracts to Union Pacific and to BNSF all of Utah's locomotives except for three SD50s were sold to Kyle railroad in Limon Colorado the remaining locomotives including several Geeps and SD40s were sold to Salt Lake City Southern who does switching at the Provo Yard and at the new headquarters for Utah Rail Midvale Yard in Salt Lake City you can see the ex guitar rail locomotive fleet every single time you visit Phillipsburg Kansas or Limon Colorado has these locomotives are now earning their keep on the Kyle Railroad. Other than that you have plenty of trains from both BNSF, Union Pacific, and Amtrak as they make their trips daily over Soldier Summit. Trains that you will find here daily are the dirt train what's takes garbage out to the dump at Sunnyside on the Green River subdivision, the helper local which takes empty cars from Helper back to Roper Yard in Salt Lake, the flagship train of the line M-NYRO the daily Denver to Salt Lake manifest, BNSF train PRODEN which picks up Utah rail cars from Provo and delivers them to Denver, and the star of Soldier Summit Amtrak 6 herself the Silver Lady Zephyr. You occasionally find a couple of coal trains from both railroads at Helper attaching the namesake locomotives to the train and mostly you will find locals coming in and out of the yard hauling oil or crude trains heading to the refinery in Salt Lake or to Richmond in California from The Savage oil terminal in Price on the Green River subdivision or from Wildcat on Utah's Gordon Branch. If you want to action on the Soldier Summit you will find it here in Helper.
To the West of Soldier Summit is Scofield, site of the Winter Quarters Mine Disaster, where over 200 miners lost their lives on May 1st, 1900, in an explosion.
Why do they put the "helpers" in the middle of a train? Why not at the end if they are pushing? I love your videos and would one day like to see you talk about the production aspect of making a video like how do you get train details to film them? SOmetimes it looks lso like you are in railroad company owned land how do you get permission to film there and were you a railroad employee at one time?
Only the lead train on the point is manned, and the helper's are only manned when they are used temporarily going up and/or down a grade and split off when not needed and return in the other direction. I'm not an expert tho, I learn watching these and other train videos.
During election season and the beginning stages of WW3 this video is pure magic. During every other time, still pure magic.
Excellent video, very beautiful the fall colors and the coal trains with the hoppers of the fallen flags.
Australian built Ex Hammersley Iron SD50s 🇦🇺
This is the most beautiful countryside for watching trains
going down the tracks and it is very beautiful thank you.🚂🚃🚃🇺🇲

I believe it.
But did he have a supervisor overlooking his new skills to make sure nothing went wrong?
My buddy is also an Engineer for U.P. and he's always said : "If you can bring a fully loaded coal train down from Soldier Summit through Spanish Fork Canyon... You can run a train on ANY stretch of track in the country."
Crazy.
1:33:41 Great catch of the unpatched Southern Pacific 343! My favorite diesel of the Southern Pacific while 4449 remains my favorite steamer!
I always enjoy the great shows you make. Love the amazing shots you manage to capture of the trans.
Wow that was some snow ❄️, what a brilliant freight trains 🚆 video 📹👌👍, this was, some brilliant captures and awesome scenery, mega video 📹 👍😎
When I was a kid, BNSF was never seen on this route. It was all D &RG and once in awhile UP
It was an entirely different railroad world back then. I don't even think FNBS existed in its current form then
during the good ole days of steam,a great uncle of mine will cook was an engineer on the Rio Grand railroad thru this same canyon
Wow cool another one i passed the soldier summit long ago.
Fantastic video. I love these massive locomotives and trains working hard up Soldier Summit.
great footage - thnx
Not sure about when this video was recorded, but the Castle Gate power plant was demolished in 2016.
One of the best episodes

Sucks theirs barley anything south of Provo that’s daily only train Ik daily is BNSFs H-DENPVO
🚂
Why manned helpers, instead of remote control?
Are all 3 of those middle engines manned? Is that an Engineer s position or can a Conductor man that position
Only the lead train on the point is manned, and the helper's are only manned when they are used temporarily going up and/or down a grade and split off when not needed and return in the other direction. I'm not an expert tho, I learn watching these and other train videos.
@@dhenschel4 right I get that. Is that manned engine an Engineers position or can a conductor be hired for that job
what are swing helpers?
Hobos on every train on the grainers
Ah yes the beloved MK5000s hauling the coal it sucks that UP took over that contract
Does anyone know if the radios in the train works in the mountains ?
yes
I love your productions except the drop frame effect which is going to give me a seizure. 😂
Great video, thank you @7ldea
