    Yoyo Flow. This is another one of those largely undiscussed topics within the Yoyo community. So I thought this would be the perfect topic for my next 'like a pro' series. So let's begin with a definition, what is flow?
    From my understanding, flow is a term that is designed to describe tricks that are performed with an elegant fluency, each element leads seamlessly into the next. Some examples of players whom I think are awesome at flow are;
    - Charles Haycock
    - Takeshi Matsuura
    - Mike Monty
    - Daniel Kim
    And countless others who don't immediately come into my memory. The way I see it is there are 3 important elements of flow.
    1) Practice
    This is the most important aspect, without practice, you won't get anywhere with flow. The more you practice the more your elements, the better they will transition and flow into each other. This is an absolute prerequisite for flow, but I'd argue that practice isn't sufficient on its own.
    2) Trick Construction
    Creating tricks that follow the 3 criteria:
    a) Follow the same direction.
    b) Change directions quickly and fluently.
    c) Devoid of redundant or irrelevant elements.
    3) Breaking flow
    Flow is nice on its own and understanding what makes it happen allows you to break it strategically and create a very snappy element. Understanding flow, and what breaks it is also a critical component in harnessing the aesthetic nature of flow.
    Hopefully, this video helps some of you out! I'm by no means an expert at flow, and flow is just one of the considerations I take into account when building tricks. However, this is what I know and I thought I'd share my thoughts in the hopes that it accelerates your learning journey.

    Hey guys! Been loving the video ideas for the 'like a pro' series. Keep them coming, I really love to make these videos where we breakdown nuances of yoyos that are widely discussed. Will try my best to do as many of the video requests as possible. Thanks again for tuning in everyone.

    excellent breakdown of flow man!Love this video
    Edit: One thing that I really find very interesting about flow is that everyone’s flow is different. You can never exactly mimic someone’s flow,like we can break down Charles’ tricks and learn it,but we can never really copy the exact way of how he does it or makes it look.
    I think this is highly correlated to muscle memory and how we do or make our own tricks,like,everyone has it’s own different way of doing the same trick,such as timing or the emphasis they put into each element. So I like to think flow in yoyoing is identical to handwriting,everyone can do the same thing,but it’ll always look different due to the way we learned it.

      I am still practising how to throw a breakaway like pro. I have been playing for 20years man since I was a teenager. After that video, I start taking video if my self playing to make sure I look like a ‘pro’. I am surprised I still lift my elbow quite high and looks hideous! Trying my best to do it the ‘pro’ way now. One thing about flow is when you perform to non-yoyoers, as long as you do a poker face and just do a pin-wheel when you miss a trick, it’s fine. They will still be impressed. One thing I would like you to cover is how not to play with a stiff shoulder and body. Even some pros do this and although you hit the trick or have flow, it still looks ugly. Do one need to take dancing classes?!

Always up to discover new great players! Very glad you made a video about this, I feel a huge lack of flow when it comes to heavily tech-nutritious freestyles I see on most competitions.

    This damn thing here. Exactly the kind of nuance based video we need more of, just like was commenting about on the throw like a pro vid you did. These are the kinds of things that not a lot of pros cover. I'm sure it's not easy for elite level players to try to remember what kind of things didn't always come to them naturally. I really appreciate that you go out of your way to find ideas like this.
    Kinda funny, until this vid I had never noticed that every time I pick up a yoyo, first thing I do is the same super basic combo. Until watching this. Now I realize that as a novice, it's really the only combo I know that flows perfectly and that makes it not only a great warmup but also for checking if that yoyo needs any maintenance. Maybe now I can finally come up with a few other different warmups lol. Please keep these coming!

    • @thebrandonvu
      @thebrandonvu  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the super insightful comment man! I do really enjoy breaking these things down. As a slow learner myself, I often need extensive breakdowns like these to fully understand what's going on. Keep me posted on any other warm up combos you may have.

    • @xaininpc5625
      @xaininpc5625 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@thebrandonvu Of course, man! And really appreciate not just the time and care you take to explain, but also your honesty. It helps us see that hey, even pros need time to learn, and we can get there too.
      Now that I think about it, one thing that maybe might help us think of combos would be to better understand what's out there. Like maybe a vid on how to more easily break a combo we see down to it's simpler elements? Or maybe a short list of like 10 or 15 building block tricks that make up a large amount of combos that are out there?
      Single trick tutorials are the bread & butter of course. But would be cool to have that one vid to show these X amount of fundamental tricks we should all work on for recognizing or building combos. What elements create the right movement to more easily transition to many other elements. Kinda like following up this how to flow idea with "here are several elements that easily flow into tons of other stuff".

  • @Kawaiivee
    @Kawaiivee 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video on flow -- I'll definitely keep some of this in mind while working on combos!
    So yeah..., just getting back into yoyoing from a hiatus of grinding to learn new tricks/elements. I've noticed that a lot of the times when my combos have a green triangle, they are at the end. I know it's like an unwritten rule that like a triangle is that 'high risk high reward' structure to throw in, especially with suicides/rejections/slack tricks, but I've only ever kind of had triangles, again, at the end or near the end of combos -- and it seems a bunch the same for a lot of players: that usually a triangle will just be a the end of a combo or long segment. I suppose it's more of an *intermediate level* sort of suggestion, but I don't really know what the "options" are to continue with a combo off of a triangle (apart from just popping out of it to a laceration or something); I know it's not 'necessary' to keep things going after a triangle, but I feel like I'm just on auto-pilot to pop out and bind after entering a triangle when I'd rather keep it going -- maybe the bigger topic is like how to transition to-from structures mid combo instead of making it look like two small combos (i feel this way a bit for towers too)
    (^basically had this thought on triangles after watching the last "banger" of a trick from Evan Nagao's 2019 world performance)

    • @thebrandonvu
      @thebrandonvu  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Very interesting idea. It sounds to me like this would be in a broader sense, how to keep your combos going like a pro... Or something like that. Definitely something I can look into.

How about a video on "how to Edit music like a Pro" I know you did a video on choosing music but how about one where you go in detail about what softwhere is the best to use and how to combine different song tunes to where it sounds good. And maybe touch on some of the tech stuff like how to save music once it is created and how to pull different tunes from youtube videos and put them on one continuous audio strand. A lot of people are not tech savvy and literally have no idea where to start. Just an idea.
