      Why not include Brendan/May in the tournament? They have access to mega Hoenn starters, Ludicolo, Swellow, Pelliper, Tropius, Wailord, Breloom, Torkoal, Raichu, Magcargo, Exploud and Claydol, despite the levels that's much better than most Gym Leaders, and it's not much of a stretch to set them to level 50. I also think it would be fair for either of them to have mega Latios/Latias, since you can't go through ORAS without it. You can still make another match for round 1 and I don't think anyone would be mad with that!

    Can we all agree that if it wasn't for Air Lock cancelling out the rain, Juan stood a VERY good chance of winning thanks to Swift Swim and ice attacks?

    • @flashaxl
      @flashaxl 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Agree, Zinnia also has 1 Legendary and 2 Pseudo Legendaries, so much stats advantages. Air Lock completely ruined Juan's strategy, which is based around rain. Hopefully she does not win, she is also not one of the OG characters in RSE. Rayquaza should go to Winona only canonically.

    • @devam8192
      @devam8192 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@flashaxl well she got rayquaza in Pokémon masters which is very much canonical and as for it feeling unfair against gym leaders well they are just lacking compared to frontiers, wild cards, elite four and champions. But that just makes the round 2 all the more exiting seeing all these titans clash against each other.

    • @jjm1099
      @jjm1099 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I very much agree, Rayquaza's Air Lock cancelled Juan's main strategy which was empowering his team via the Rain in order to enhance their speed via the Swift Swim ability and further boost the raw power of their STAB Water-Type attacks, what's more Rayquaza did this while also providing Zinnia which an enormous beat-stick that was ready to pummel everything that wasn't super-defensive and resisted it's attacks into the ground.
      If Zinnia had to use at least two Pokémon to achieve this it would be ok, kind of like Flannery who has her Torkoal to set up the Sun and who then has to use some other Pokémon in order to go fully on the offensive because Torkoal while useful especially due to Drought is at heart a defensive-supportive Pokémon, but the problem is that it was done by a single Pokémon Rayquaza is a complete offensive beast and combined with it's ability means that Juan's team (powerful offensive threats) were left vulnerable and and that this was all achieved by a single Pokémon means that zinnia's victory is honestly kind of meh because she didn't so much outplayed Juan as she just threw a top Legendary and had Rayquaza carry her through the match.

      On top of that, Hoenn has the added bonus of being remade in Gen VI when Megas were in their prime, meaning a lot of trainers have them compared to the prior.
      I don't see how any other tournament could have as many powerful trainers as Hoenn's, even moving further. There aren't gonna be many megas as far as Sinnoh, Unova and Alola are concerned, while Kalos just lacks quantity of trainers and most NPCs don't have megas.

    Juan: Greetings, my fine young friend, my name is Juan. Oh no, there's no reason to be so coy ... I am indeed the famous coordinator and Gym Leader you have no doubt heard about, mentor to the former Champion, and I would be pleased to ...
    Zinnia: Whoa, there! Gonna have to stop ya right there, Mr. Crawdaunt-Coat, and ask you to bring it down a level or two. Yeah, I know you're, like, a big local celebrity and everyone's jumping all over you, but a man twice my age wearing an outfit that would make Tucker blush really isn't my type! You can smash all the shells you like, but not me!
    Juan: Oh, no, no, no, no, no, you misunderstand me, I merely wanted to say that ...
    Zinnia: Haha! I'm just razzing you, buddy, don't be such a stick in the mud! We're here to battle, yeah? I'm ready! I'm pumped! I'm gonna blow you outta the water like the little fish you train!
    Juan: Ohoho, very funny. My, such a spirited girl, but totally lacking in elegance. Perhaps I should make you my apprentice, after I demonstrate to you what type the Dragons feared before the Fairies made their stunning debut!
    Zinnia: Pshaw! What do you take me for, some ridiculous anime kid who's terrified of Ice Pokémon? My clan had better teachers than a bunch of prancing water peacocks from Sootopolis could ever be!
    Juan: As impressive as your flying lizards and antiquated dinosaurs no doubt are, I'm afraid I must put a stop to those ambitions. My student awaits me after this match, and it would be greatly against my character to let him down! Bear witness to the elegant illusions and tranquil fury of my best team!
    Zinnia: Aw, don't you worry! Once I'm finished with you, I'll send your boy Wallace to join you in the lower bracket! Aster, Sweetie! This fop wants to dance for us, so let's play him some music!

    • @TheMissingLink2
      @TheMissingLink2 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@AHEM1313 That's if Gorebyss would have even had a chance to setup. Pretty much everything Zinnia had could 1HKO it. And then on top of that, you're leaving it up to chance that Zinnia would keep Rayquaza in and that it would hurt itself in confusion the next round. And with Rayquaza running E-speed, a Gorebyss sweep is just unlikely to happen.
      Also, probably the worst decision Juan made was not letting politoed go down early on. The rain didn't do much for this battle at all. Especially with Rayquaza's Air Lock.
      Also, switching in Kingdra to tank the blow from Tyrantrum was a bad play. He should have brought it in fresh after the sacrifice of Politoed. That way he is getting the KO with full health.
      Lastly, Lapras was crucial to taking down Rayquaza. It was the only pokemon on the team Rayquaza could not 1 shot. Letting it take so much damage from Exploud instead of switching in Poiltoed to be sacrificed was not a good play.
      Overall, I just think Juan made a lot of poor choices. I see what he was trying to do but sometimes it's better to work with what is laid out in front of you. Once Politoed lost most of itself HP, it was dead weight besides setting up rain or being a sacrifice. And with Air lock, rain didn't matter, so that leaves only one role. But that wasn't used effectively at all.

    • @AHEM1313
      @AHEM1313 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@TheMissingLink2 I definitely agree that Juan made some bad plays early on and that his best chance of winning would have been to keep Kingdra and Lapras alive longer, but my point was that Juan could still potentially have won even with those losses if he hadn't lost Gorebyss. Yes, he could only have won if Rayquaza had hit itself in confusion, but her switching Rayquaza out would have also given Gorebyss a chance to use Shell Smash. Also, even at -1 Defense and no EVs for Defense or HP, Gorebyss can survive one Extreme Speed from a max Attack Rayquaza with a Life Orb, albeit barely.

    Rayquaza's Air Lock cancelled Juan's main strategy which was empowering his team via the Rain in order to enhance their speed via the Swift Swim ability and further boost the raw power of their STAB Water-Type attacks, what's more Rayquaza did this while also providing Zinnia which an enormous beat-stick that was ready to pummel everything that wasn't super-defensive and resisted it's attacks into the ground.
    If Zinnia had to use at least two Pokémon to achieve this it would be ok, kind of like Flannery who has her Torkoal to set up the Sun and who then has to use some other Pokémon in order to go fully on the offensive because Torkoal while useful especially due to Drought is at heart a defensive-supportive Pokémon, but the problem is that it was done by a single Pokémon Rayquaza is a complete offensive beast and combined with it's ability means that Juan's team (powerful offensive threats) were left vulnerable and and that this was all achieved by a single OP Pokémon means that Zinnia's victory honestly feels kind of meh because she didn't so much outplayed Juan as she just threw a top OP Legendary and had Rayquaza carry her through the match.

    At heart, Juan is a performer, and his team reflects that: he either hits it big and unleashes an awesome sweep, or falls on his face and flounders in the shallows. With Zinnia's team resistant to Water attacks almost across the board, Juan's Ice coverage is his only realistic path to victory. If he gets set up with Shell Smash and is able to go on the Ice Beam rampage, he has a good chance. Zinnia's team is crazy powerful, but she does have THREE Pokémon doubly weak to Ice, and two more with standard Ice weaknesses. Even Rayquaza has reason to be afraid of Shell Smash Gorebyss, unless Zinnia has unlocked the AG VIP, of course. There wasn't any Mega-Evolution in Masters, but Zinnia is capable of teaching Rayquaza Dragon Ascent, so it's possible that we might just get a gigantic green surprise. And no, I don't mean the announcer being surprised at what the "Pokémon that isn't entered into our database, we'll have to find out about that," is going to be.
    Much of the battle is going to come down to unanswered questions: Will rain be up when Gorebyss enters the field, to take advantage of Swift Swim? Will this become a disadvantage because it will have to take an attack after a Shell Smash? Will Juan find a safe time to get Gorebyss out on the field? Will there be Choice Scarfs that allow sudden Speed advantages? Does Exploud have an Assault Vest that would enable it to stop the sweep? How many of Zinnia's Pokémon have the Yache Berries or Focus Sashes that would put Juan in hot water? We'll have to see. Zinnia definitely has much, much more raw power than Juan, but also much larger and more easily exploited weaknesses. If Rayquaza Mega-Evolves and/or sets up with Dragon Dance, it'll be all over for Juan ... but if Gorebyss can set up against Altaria and Zinnia isn't packing the items to stop it, things could very well go the other way. The trends of the tournament so far predict a Zinnia victory, but Juan's placement so close to a mentor-vs.-student showdown feels suspiciously fitting.
    On a side note, I'm puzzled at the placement of Exploud on Zinnia's team. We never saw her use Aster in battle, but now she's fully evolved and leveled up? I'm not objecting, but with that sort of stretch, Sydney should definitely have gotten his Crawdaunt, Ethan/Gold should have gotten a team of the evolved forms of the Pokémon he mentions having as an NPC, and Brendan and May should have both gotten full teams.
    Edit: It was a miss! Juan's fatal mistake, I think, was sending Gorebyss against Rayquaza. Whiscash and Crawdaunt didn't have the movesets to sweep the rest of Zinnia's team, whereas Gorebyss at least had a chance, and a confused Rayquaza would have given Gorebyss an opening to set up (if Zinnia either switched Rayquaza or it hit itself in confusion). As soon as Gorebyss went down, I knew how the battle was going to go. As before, I'm pleased to see an Uber Pokémon used right--the second time that we saw one Pokémon get all six KOs! And just like I predicted back in Winona vs. Norman, every single Gym Leader went down in the first round, except for the one who fought another Gym Leader! Really shows you how fierce the competition is here in Hoenn!
