    The Blackmagic camera is definitely an awesome camera. Honestly, a dream-come-true for indie filmmakers.

  • @Corridor
    @Corridor 12 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Our base kit was about $16k. Camera+batteries&media+handles&accessories. Add on another $4k for lenses, mics, and cases. All-in-all, expensive, but reasonable for the professional quality of the gear. Also, it's cheaper than any other camera of that caliber.

      The insurance on them cameras guarantees that nothing can happen that won't be fixed. You spend over 50,000 dollars on something you know damn well the warranty is gonna cover everything.

    Just wanted to share:
    The "film look" is actually more to do with the TRANSITION from darks to lights within the dynamic range (obviously the more latitude, the better). "Highlight roll-off." Film stock has a bee very smooth and gradual transition from dark to lights, especially in the highlight region. This is the top factor that digital cameras fight to master, and why cameras like the Alexa and RED's are so sought after.
    An important note, with the above in mind, is that trying to achieve the "film look" does not REQUIRE you to not let your highlights blow out. I think this is worried about too much. If we look closely at older films, like Scarface for example, there are scenes where the highs are most definitely blown out in some areas, but it works for the scene. So I think that's an important and interesting point to remember.
    This is not a specific criticism or critique on any particular part of this video, I just really enjoy talking about these things and was prompted by the section talking about dynamic range. Needless to say, this video's very informative and accurate.

    This review is absolutely superb. No BS, straight in, examples, on-location (not just in a studio). I'm from a photography background, so understood it all, but it was interesting to know about the film look, and about this particular camera.

    You guys have really come a long way since the start of this channel. Niko, you've really got a good handle on talking to the camera comfortably, and you obviously know what you're talking about in this. I wouldn't mind taking a class at my school with you as the professor. You're pretty good at putting everything simply, but not dumbing it down.
    Anyway, beautiful camera, and you guys continue to grow very consistently, so I'm looking forward to the future of your gear and films.

    They hired a company that specializes in removing compression and digital artifacts from footage to go through and clean up the entire movie. But sure, there's always exceptions to the rule...There's a reason that movie was shot on 5d, and there's a reason why the vast majority of theatrical films aren't.

    Very informative and cool considering there are people like me who have not taken a cinematography class or other forms like it to know all these nice insights. Even though I'll probably never apply it to a real life situation, I can still appreciate whats happening behind the scenes to make such epic vids.

    I just want to say that you can get 14 stops of range out of the fs100... I use this camera, and it is awesome. they were just using a crappy picture profile. using a good G-log profile will get a TON more range. Love you Sam, and Niko, u both have been an inspiration. No disrespect.

    You can get a 2TB drive now for 100 bucks or less. If you buy a server specificaly for saving your footage with 3 or 4 hard drives, you end up with 8TB or 4TB of storage depending on the way your configured your RAID (if you're going for storage or durability).

    Lots of reasons why dude. Lots, beyond what you would comprehend. Visual effects is a lot of trickery, The more pixels and resolution you have the more data you can play with. And if you have a bigger canvas, not only do you scale down, but for starters you can re-frame the shot, stabilize, use it to create matte paintings and pan digitally in post.. and the list goes on!

    While I'm not Sam nor am I Niko I will try my best to answer.
    Scarlet rigs usually cost around 13-18K.
    As for the upgrade possibilities you can always look into stuff like the 5D MKIII and recently cameras such as the Sony NEX VG30 and VG900 have surfaced which look pretty cool (at least on paper).

    I agree completely, But i'm not sold on this camera at it's current state. I myself cannot wait until this camera's success leads to more competition in this price range and resolution. i think that the next few years, if this camera is successful, will be way beyond the dream-come-true that this camera is now.

  • @RedLeaderTrackMaster
    @RedLeaderTrackMaster 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    And $10,000 is literally just the body, which until you buy an additional $6K-10K of gear from RED, is just a paperweight.
    If you are in the market for a camera, and on a massive budget, I would recommend a T2i BODY, older NIKKOR Lenses (with the conversion mounts), and a Lilliput 7” Field Monitor. You can get started for under $1000 with everything you need.

    75% 5D, the rest was on the Arri alexa. but yea, in the right hands, it's a great camera. Red tails had about 300 shots done by philip bloom with the 5D as well. :)

    I agree with that, but it's not just the end product that's important, its how you get to that end product. It doesn't just look better for the editor, its better to work with. example, I was shooting one music video and we forgot to go in for a close up. so, we took the medium shot, and zoomed in by 40% to fake a close up, and because we shot Red to begin with, even after zooming in we still had a full 1080p image. but it can infact help, regardless of its ending resolution

    The only trade off will be shallow depth of field. since the sensor, if i remember correctly, is smaller than that of an entry level DSLR or consumer camera (although the resolution is much higher because of this) shallow depth of field will be much more difficult to get. loosing a part of that cinematic look. It is still something to look forward to though.

  •  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Some videos have the 'Original' quality option. That's 4k.
    And there are quite a few monitors that'll have 4k: MacBook Pro/iPad Retina, biggest iMac, and many other separate screens too.
