    The one big plus the SL3 has over the M50 is that it accepts all of the Canon EF and EF-S lenses directly. You have access to all that glass. With the M50 you need to invest in a different mount and there are not that many M50 lenses available by comparison.

    I use this camera for my vlogs! And I enjoy this camera along with my 10-18 lens, meets my basic needs for video and photography so far. I had my pick of the m50 and the SL3 but opted for the SL3 for the battery life and lens options.

    I think this is "My First Camera" for the child of a professional Canon photographer. It's relatively cheap, it lets you do anything a more expensive DSLR would, and it's compatible with the traditional EF lineup without any adapter. It also might give beginner photographers a gateway into the Canon world, and there will be A LOT of used EF glass coming onto the market as RF comes into its own and photographers switch over, plus, I'm sure Canon wants to continue selling EF-s glass.

    Great camera, budget price. Works very well in mirrorless mode (as you said in the video), then for experienced photographers (I have 50 years) the mirror is very much appreciated. Canon have given a low cost camera option with a great automatic mode, plus full manual mirrored mode if you want. For me on a budget, I was able to get ring adapters and use my 1980's manual Zeiss lenses to brilliant effect !! Fabulous. Well done Canon.

    I think I'm the guy they are targeting. I have an older XSi. I have a few EF-S lenses with it. This would be a huge jump up in features and still use my lenses.

    I think your review is kind of a mirrorless biased. You guys reviewed this camera with a continuous comparison with mirrorless option. It's kind of a relative review. There are tons of reasons where an actual dslr is way better than Mirrorless counterparts. They are two different systems & can not be compared logically. It really depends upon the user's preference towards the system he or she likes to use.

      yes, mirroless is trendy nowdays (and new area for bussiness for sure), but disdain for reflex cameras is exaggerated. Mirroless have their disadvantages too (battery drain, heat/cooling problems, delay of EVF). So for somebody this combination of DLSR funkctionality with OVF and mirroless like functionality over LCD can be very nice solution.

      comparing a $500 dslr to $1000 mirrorless options hardly seemed fair..i think there main issue is cos of the sl2 already been out as its more of a processor update. but it saves 40% more battery life for pretty much the same price all good imo.

  •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

    Less of a review than a recap of the mirrorless vs DSLR debate, except they forgot to mention the advantages of DSLR, such as better battery life, near instant wakeup, good for keeping subjects in view for a long time. Another reason why someone may prefer the SL3 may be that the M50 have a more limited line-up of native lenses

    Why? I was looking for a rebel dslr with 4k and the autofocus!!!

  • @microdac
    @microdac 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Why? It's simple. I asked for it. I shoot nature videos and I love using my Canon cameras. I also have lots of Canon EF lenses, BUT, until now I had to shoot 4K videos with an AFFORDABLE Panasonic FZ1000 or ZS70. So, Canon listened and built this camera us folks on a budget. No bells and whistles, but it shoots 4K and at an AFFORDABLE price AND it uses EF lenses. That's why!
    $500 instead of $3000 for the 5D mark 4.

    I have this camera and like it for what it is. It's small and easy to carry and with a 24mm or 40mm pancake lens it does not draw attention as does my larger camera's, be that 7DMII, 90d, or 5DMII. The bottom line it works for me!

  • @xmlthegreat
    @xmlthegreat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Good review, I really found Dave's date analogy very apt. The only reason you would want to get this camera is if you shoot a lot of stills without needing the DualPixel AF functionality, and you want a camera that can (very occasionally) record video as well. With the mirror up, it's an M50. So using it with the OVF is the only way to get the potential battery life out of it. If you use the rear screen as Dave did you're going to get the same battery life as any mirrorless.

    SL2, SL3 both awesome cameras. They are exciting because of the price point and the features. Perfect camera for most TH-camrs and vloggers. Also better imo than the m50 because of the lens selection.

    • @kiwipics
      @kiwipics 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The M50 works perfectly with EFs, EF lenses and the Canon adaptor, but the SL3 is a better option if you want your sensor to be less of a dust trap.

      @@pollandball5424 ... Only if you already have EF / EFs lenses, and they're not that expensive (especially on ebay). Just remember that you'd have access to the widest range of lenses ever made, and as I said the SL3 is an ideal option, or buy the SL2 if you're on a tight budget.

    My first camera in about 2015 was the SL1. I sold it years ago but I must miss it because I want the updated version. I know the optical viewfinder is like looking through a narrow tube - but it doesn’t stop me. Maybe I could just buy it as a travel camera. Even better, maybe there is someone who rents them and I can get it out of my system after a few days.

    • @nevermore311
      @nevermore311 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I just got my first two SLRs 2 months ago, a 60D and an SL3. The nice part is opening the door to a huge amount of high quality lenses on the used market, which I think is the last appeal of the SLR market. Being able to compare the 60D and SL3 was very interesting as a beginner, with the sizes and weights being so drastically different. I've learned a lot, but I still think the SL3 has a permanent role as a travel camera, and they're on the used market now! Got mine with a bag and a kit lens on eBay for $400. Got into photography for a trip to Yellowstone, and I was able to carry the SL3 on a backpack clip so easily. It's doable with a medium sized lens, or I'd often put the 24mm pancake lens on it. The battery lasted through full days of burst photo, and some video. The most used lens for vacation type stuff was the EFS 18-135.... which is not expensive, not too heavy, good for video, and super diverse. Mirrorless is more difficult to assemble an entire kit without spending a bunch, but the SL3 makes a cheaper travel kit super viable.

    I just bought this camera to replace my aging Samsung mirrorless NX 300. I bought it because I wanted eye detect and I wanted the equivalent around a 60 mm lens which I got inexpensively with Canon's 35 mm macro (56mm full frame equivalent) made for ASPC bodies and while it's somewhat slow at F 2.8 (f4 full frame equivalent), it has image stabilization which makes up for it. This gave me a decently small and light camera and lens set up for $800 and I can always add a 50 mm 1.8 for a hundred more. Giving me a full-frame equivalent of 80 f2.8 for an extra hundred dollars. The only time I will use the viewfinder is outdoors and very bright sunlight which I rarely shoot in. So part of me feels like I'm going backwards buying an SLR but really I'm buying the best value for the money.

    Why SL2/SL3 over M50?
    SL cameras natively use the EF mount.
    EOS M uses the EF-M mount and you'll need an adapter to use EF.

  • @ColoringKaria

    i dont understand why you are asking why. lens. thats why. there is only one or two canon efm autofocus lens under $300. there are countless lens for this camera for under $200. you can get those same lens for the M50 but then you have get a $200 adaptor! so while this camera technically costs the same if you are starting from zero this camera is actually much much much cheaper as soon as you start adding lens

    In the UK at the moment the SL3 sometimes cheaper than the SL2 (although it's the 250d and 200d respectivly. I wish Canon would use the American names worldwide). The M50 is only a wee bit more expensive. I'll be getting the SL3 tomorrow as I'll be shooting in PAL 25fps, so I'm not really going to miss 24fps and I can get cheaper lenses without an extra £120 for an adapter (which I'd need for the M50). I shoot guitar videos in a studio environment, so I might be brave and press the NTSC button and shoot in 60fps at it should be smoother and easy to slow down.
    My room is tiny however so if I shoot in 4K, with that crop, I'll need to shoot one finger at a time!
    Thanks for your wee video. It's another that's helped me make up my mind after a month of research and investigation into every camera on earth (around my price range).
    Cheers!

    Long live the DSLR! I have several mirrorless cameras, with awesome capabilities, but oh how I hate them in bright sunlight. Can't see any shadow detail, and the image is dim because one's eyes are accustomed to the sunlight. In more subdued lighting, such as cloudy days or indoors, they are superb. I think there's room for both in any good photographer's arsenal.

      I'd give an edge to the D5600 since it has slightly better image quality in low light and in higher contrast scenarios. It also has faster AF through the viewfinder. But, the Canon SL2 has better AF when using the LCD with Dual Pixel Autofocus. It really depends on how you like to shoot.

    View finders don't chew up batteries, what you see is what you get even with the camera off, less lag, and they also don't have any problems being seen In bright light. I eventually settled on this camera after years of bridges and super zooms (post 35mm). Cannon does kind of throw me how their line doesn't have clear choices of what is better. The other one I looked at had way more auto focus points but, only 1080p video? It had nfc which I didn't care about at all but, the last gen image processor. On top of that it was $100 more. You think if it costs that much more it should clearly be better in every way but, this one also beat it in battery life. If I cared about video at all I probably would have looked more heavily at a mirrorless though.

    If your perspective is coming from being well experienced and well versed in the ins and outs of using a DSLR I can see how this SL3 would be boring to you.
    I am coming from having moved from 35mm SLR to compact digital and then to Bridge Cameras.
    I tried to break into a DSLR format with a Nikon D3200 and then a Nikon D3400, both of which I hated, Especially the D3400. I find that I am better able to understand and ably use this SL3, if I have a workable lens.

    I always think it's funny that Jared and others look at these cameras as viable... but then look at Pentax cameras as if they are somehow not in the conversation. New/Pre-Order this camera is almost $900. For $650 you can get a Pentax KP, which has a sensor with the same resolution, Class leading Weather sealing, IBIS, Pixel shift for when you need higher resolution, Significant bump in ISO performance:819000, 27-pt Autofocus, 7fps. Most cameras at the price struggle to give you 2 dials, KP has 3 dials, Green Button, and all packed into a size that is smaller than a Panasonic GH5. And almost all of these features aren't just in the KP, most of these features come standard to even the lowest camera... not to mention having the most knowledgeable forum for photography ever (even if I didn't have a Pentax, I would just act like it. It's that informative). For $900, you can almost get a used K-1 now (i usually $1100 or so, which I think is practically like having a K-1ii). The K-3ii ($450, roughly same price of SL2) is even light years ahead of this offering. I continue to wonder what is missing??? Yes, it's a slow bleed to have to watch everyone else get new cameras, and all you get is a 'special edition', and they give zero Fs for those people who care about video. But for strictly taking pictures... SMH

      DSLRs are like a dead man walking. I think Canon is just trying to make some money releasing this kind of cameras, they have the M50, they should release more lenses to that apsc system and not more apsc dlsr's, and eventually release only mirrorless cameras

    I have an SL2 but the upgrade is not really worth it, I use the Live View for most of my hobby photography. But either way you can't go wrong either buying the SL2 or SL3, both are pretty good photo and video cameras

    I really want the m50 but I want the size of the T7i and the Lenses available and the battery life. The Sl2 and Sl3 line up are great but I still am deciding between the T7i or T8I or the M50. Just wish the M50 was different :/

    I have a 200D SL2, seems like they just added 4K in SL2 and released it as SL3 250D.. I wish they have just given a firmware update for SL2 to use 4K.. I know it’s not easy but it’s possible instead releasing another model with very little upgrade..

      Rodrick HD Not for everybody... 2x the size and weight, no articulated touch screen, no DPAF. The SL2/3 is small, light and the EF-S STM lenses are cheap and decent quality for the price.

    Huge Canon supporter, but this camera is honestly pointless. Video features are worse than the SL2...4K for the sake of 4K but, as you point out, the footage can't work in the same timeline because of frame rates! No 24p in 1080. Lack of support for generic manual flashes or remote triggers...I can't think of any reason to buy this over the SL2.

    Bit of an odd product, this. I suppose it might make sense if you have a bunch of EF-S glass, your old 450D is finally dead, and you need a new body, but any newcomer looking to get an ILC should seriously consider something like an M50, a Lumix GX80, an Olympus E-M10 or a Fuji X-T100.

    Everyone keeps talking about this camera having 4K video but it has a severe crop factor it’s pointless to use it. Instead, they need to be bringing up the fact that it has clean HDMI output which the M50 does not without sacrificing autofocus. It also gives you metering for your audio levels during video which the M50 does not. Everyone keeps advertising this 4K crap. I don’t care about 4K! I’ve also consider the M50 but its battery life is not very good.

    The lenses made for the M50 are not as good as the larger EF lenses. With the better lenses, you will have a much larger selection of lenses to choose from.

    The removal of the center pin in the hotshoe, forcing potential buyers to have to also invest in Canon Branded flashes.

    They figured the 4k would get more buyers than the SL2...

  • @johnjon1823
    @johnjon1823 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    They made it because there is some demand so they gave it a nearly invisible refresh and since it is a DSLR they are not going to invest much in it. They are an amazingly penny pinching outfit. Now, if this were 2012 it would be an interesting and reasonably compelling offering, however in 2019 it is not exciting. If you want to see part of the problem visit a Walmart and you will find an entire camera section is a pathetically small thing perhaps 1/6 as just a few years ago. The Oreo section alone dwarfs all camera offerings by a factor of 10 or 20 to one. Best buy, depending on the store is also very unimpressive camera selection as well, but in their largest and most unique stores (I have no idea how many of them they have, but around here there is only 1 really good one) they have a nice camera selection. The camera market is shrinking and Canon knows this and is not investing in stuff on the way out. They are moving more up market i.e. expensive due to expected lower volume and targeting mostly pro or high-end enthusiasts because that will remain the bulk of the business, and it will be mirrorless but not right away. The very high end DSLR 1Dwhatever may last quite a while longer and perhaps a 5DV and even 5dVI may come as well. Lower end consumer stuff will be the M cameras, their code M for meh. Interesting times. But unless Canon gets real with actual sensor improvement such as dynamic range and IBS and eliminating a low pass filter for better sharpness they will pay for it dearly, the clock is about run out on reboxing old - old -old sensors. Frankly if their next 2 card slot offering in mirrorless isn't a huge improvement I will liquidate the stuff I have and likely just go to Fuji
