I just got this suggested by the YT algorithm. Even as a Madness fan since when their first album _One Step Beyond_ was released, I didn't know that they covered Grieg's _Peer Gynt_ . I knew their Tchaikovsky cover of _Swan Lake_ , but not this one. This is a real gem.
When I was 10 years old back in 1980 I decided after seeing Baggy Trousers for 1st time that Madness would be my lifelong fave band. After more than 31 years have indeed remained my fave band. I know that band inside out, seen them many times live, got all the records. I know a Madness record when I hear it like their family or something. Norton Folgate is their best record ever and they are true British Legends. Known them for so long but still get tears of joy in my eyes hearing this mad tune
My Parents in 1960 hosted at home a "Beatnik Party" I was age 7. The neighbors dressed like Beatniks (Earlier to the Hippies). It was a small house, i couldn't sleep but what you see here was quite similar!! WHAT were they smoking? My parents very rarely drank if at all. there was no booze....
Baggy trousers was the first record I ever bought with my pocket money, think I was 9 year old. I remember seeing them on top of the pops for the first time, it was the video for My Girl and that was it I was completely hooked on Madness. Now 43 years later as a 51 year old man I'm going to see them play live on the 14th of June in my home town of Halifax for the first time since 1993. A truly unique band that's stood the test of time and still remain popular after five decades. 😎😎❤️
@@ady8084 At this rate they are surely more popular than Oil Whale Lanterns, ach, i remember the smell of those lamps at night....(just joking) but what is this about "Old Man" at age 51. Am 70 and after weathering Corona Time Period I feel better than I did at 60-69, Thank G-d!
Indeed! Who could forget that fateful day they appeared on TOTP for the first time performing "The Prince"? What a gale of freshness! They came and captured our affections forever. ❤️
Well, what can I say, my grandson bought this for me for Christmas. I wont say how much I like it but, I've fallen out with the neighbours, got an ASBO and blown the speakers in me car!!!!
This is just superb - a classic piece of classical music - also worth listening to Nero and the Gladiators version too. I also know that Showaddywaddy do a great, fast version in their live set.
I'm 46 and I have loved Madness for 32 years. They are one of my favorite bands of all time. I'm so glad your parents are not idiots (well they might be but they like Madness so they get a pass). Peace.
As a partial Norwegian I Adore this version. Uncomformed facts from my family is that someone from my family was a cousin to THE Edvard Greig. Nevertheless, the Originall and the Masterfull MADNESS Version is such a Amazing Badass that I might be even portuguse. It Is Still------ MasterClass. Long Live Madness 😜
They actually are producing a new album some time in the future, if you looked at their other vids where they are in the studio (producing some very good work too, may I add), and you don't necessarily need to buy the whole compilation, and as this one contains 2 unreleased songs, just go on itunes or Spotify and download them seperate.
"Hey you! Dont ride that, ride this! This is the heavy heavy monster ride, the nutsiest rollercoaster around! So if you've come in off towers street, and you're beginning to feel the heat, well listen, buster, you better start to kick your feet, to the rockinest, rock-steady thrill of Nemesis! ONE STEP BEYOND!"
ONLY MADNESS CAN MAKE YOU DANCE TO THIS NUTTY TUNE BLINDING WELL DONE BOYS YOU STILL GET ME ROCKING EVEN AFTER ALL THESE YEARS MAKE ME FEEL 13 AGAIN THANKS GOD BLESS
you can see now where madness got some of there moves from I bet in there day the people in this vid thought that they was so hip little did they know what it would lead too madness for ever
My favourite album is Absolutely and my favourite period is 79-80 because of the whole skinhead thing of those days. But they've grown over the years as musicians (and some in the band also body-wise hehe) . They're a fantastic band who make fine music, with the epic track Liberty of Norton Folgate as pinnacle. I don't believe Madness ever stopped making Nutty Songs, they just don't sound so young gunnish as they did back in 79-80.
My Parents in 1960 hosted at home a "Beatnik Party" I was age 7. The neighbors dressed like Beatniks (Earlier to the Hippies). It was a small house, i couldn't sleep but what you see here was quite similar!! WHAT were they smoking? My parents very rarely drank if at all. there was no booze....
why has this been cut short? Barso does another run on the piano at the end then there's a big build up then it finishes. tut tut whoever edited this! cracking tune tho! its amazing how madness can do cover versions of classical music and make them sound better than the originals!
To me Drip Fed Fred, Seven Dials and That Close sound as every bit as nutty as Mummy's Boy, That's the Way to do It and Not Home Today. The only difference is that the older songs are played much faster which makes them "appear" to sound nuttier than the recent songs. What I like about this tune is that they still have it in them to make this track sound like it was written in the early 80's.
Yes!!! Best of Madness #1000!!! Come on guys, you can't be serious? Allways the same songs on your best ofs, just the name changes. Write some new songs ;)
One Step Beyond is their best album by far, in my opinion, as it encapsulates That Nutty Sound. TLONF doesn't even come close. i think its their worst album (apart from Mad Not Mad, obviously). and im a serious hardcore lifelong madness fanatic too!
TLONF their worst album apart from Mad Not Mad? Don't make me laugh what a truly ridiculous comment. It'stheir best by far, One step beyond being 2nd best
The original is actually; I Dovregubbens hall by Edvard Grieg. The English title is In the Hall of the Mountain King. This version is a SKA version by the Master of Madness.

Greatest1979 ... I fucking hear ya, they’ve been my idols since 1980, named my two sons after Mark and Carl.
Foldgate is an absolute masterpiece

Absolutely OUTSTANDING. I've followed Madness since first seeing them on TOTP in 1979 and they never fail to impress me. Best band EVER.

I totally Love Madness since I was a little girl in the 80's. Such a beautiful time of my life. Magic ♥️💥
What a way to start the Sunday. Superb!
This is just superb - a classic piece of classical music - also worth listening to Nero and the Gladiators version too. I also know that Showaddywaddy do a great, fast version in their live set.
YT suggested this, and it made my morning. Madness always makes me happy. 😎😄
This makes me even more proud of my town, and Grieg!
Well I had to listen and watch over and over and over and then listen to and watch again. That is just how much I like it!
Brilliant typical Madness, I love this.

Wat een geweldige clip is er gemaakt voor dit zeldzame nummer van popband nummer 1! Zeer aanstekelijk. Stil zitten is onmogelijk. Madness rules......

Grieg is the composer of this, Madness covered it well with their nutty style and Alton Towers have adopted it as their theme tune
But it is an Honour for Edvard Grieg!!!🙏🙏

Know I see the variety hall influence, what a confluence.

What in Peergynts name did i just witness
Nutty. Grieg must be spinning, no, skanking in his grave.
I bet he is abit confused, but as soon the music goes on he will dig it.
Even in his grave.

Who said classical music is stuffy?

Ross bolingbroke Greig composed it its called In The Hall of The Mountain King. Alton Towers use it for their theme tune
