I’m single - replaced my 1.7ltr 2kW kettle with an auto-off 0.9kW 330ml travel kettle I had last year - it switches off much sooner on reaching boiling point than boiling the same quantity of water in the big kettle and only boils a single mug of water. The other advantage is the travel kettle will boil on my solar generated power without importing from the mains if I’m generating enough on my ancient 3.9kW array!
This hits me. I was all for the missus getting a whistling kettle for the induction hob and storing the 3kW kettle. Run it on the 1.5kW ring giving it a good 5 count of the tap to fill it per mug. The whole lot powered from the Givenergy everytime, no grid pull.
I have an old, digital kettle and can choose lower heat settings. I always press once for 90 degrees then once to start it. Otherwise, like yours it boils it's head off. Never had a bad brew at 90 degrees!
Same! I mean, instant coffee is one thing, but then putting it in the microwave?! 😮 I bet the "coffee" made this way would taste better if the milk was warmed in the microwave, then the instant coffee added.
I guess if you want to save energy you could run the tap water into a jug and wait for it to be room temperature which would save a little energy. We make coffee in the bean to cup coffee maker. But for tea we overfill the kettle because we live in a hard water area and it's gets crispy bits in the bottom, and nobody likes crispy bits in their tea! 😄
Love to see if the claims that boiler water taps (like quooker, insinkerator etc) save money. How many kettle sourced mugs needed to get to the break even point.
The amount of energy required to heat one cubic cm of water by one degree is always the same, the thing that was really missed is the starting temperature of the water and vessels you chose to heat it up in and the conductive efficiency of those vessels. Atmospheric pressure also effects the boiling point of water, you're pretty low in Norfolk, perhaps go up Ben Nevis and try again 😉 All science and jokes apart, by only boiling the exact amount of water you need you are being very efficient and not wasteful. We filled the kettle with our standard 2 mugs then made a line with a sharpie on the level indicator so we could fill straight from the tap, little wins but they add up!
I just made myself an instant hot chocolate using the induction hot and one mug of water. Not boiling water as that would be too hot. I have switched from microwaving to using the induction hob a lot more since going solar. I also got myself an Aldi electric 1000w health grill/sandwich toaster which is just big enough for cooking one meal. It will also be useful when out in my van and want to cook some hot food.
Well what a shock ending, Nigel doesn’t use the most efficient way to make a cup of coffee. No doubt you have trouble sleeping at night after making this video 😂 My mother-in-law always makes coffee in the microwave as you showed, it does make for a smoother coffee although I think she boils the water first, adds milk, then microwaves, so probably bottom of the league table of efficiency. Best advice as someone else commented is to buy a kettle with a lower power output that your inverter can supply so the cuppa comes from solar or battery power not grid import
Thing is, boiling the kettle or just generally heating water for some purpose, washing up, boiling food, is where we expend quite a lot of energy. Even keeping the lid on or better yet using a pressure cooker helps to keep the efficiency high
I don’t get the coffee thing, never have but a good brew is something else! We have an insulated kettle that you can vary the temperatures and boils at around 1.7kw so i can use it with my 2kwh invertor. I do however boil a big pan of water on gas and fill it up and then top the heat off electrically. I’m with Ovo so pay full whack to the energy thieves but get a few kWh from the shed solar at this time of year! Gas is cheaper by a long shot to heat water hence why we dont shower with the electric shower, it spikes big time but the shower over bath (from gas boiler) comes in £1 a shower cheaper!
Have you thought about using it trying a Tassimo Coffee Machine or one of the Kitchen Hot Taps just to use to heat the water on the hot plates. I would be interested to know how much they costs vrs a normal Kettle.
agreed. I have a Tassimo machine but stopped buying the pods once they stopped the local recycling programme for the pods. I simply felt guilty producing that much plastic waste as a matter of habit and for the sake of convenience.
If you use the Tassimo with just a blank pod in it you can use it as a Hot Water plate for just boiling water. Not sure the efficiency compared to boiling a cup of water.
Science for the common person..... Love it👍

We have a whistling kettle next to the coffee pot, Great things

I'm sorry I'm a coffee snob, I almost didn't finish watching this! Thankfully the Mokapot saved the day.

The problem is once you've tasted better coffee there's no going back I guess, glad there was something in it to entertain at the end

Better than just judging it and having a half empty cup sometimes 🤦

Remember the milk going into the coffee is colder than the water.
I too fill the cups I plan to use, then empty these into the kettle.
It tastes a lot better with Moroccan pot I got one too lovely coffee only have it when I’ve got time to sit down and enjoy it

Exactly , I'm not counting sheep but adding up all the wasted energy 😉
This is extreme. I love it haha

Unfortunately that's just looking at the cost efficiency angle . Keeping it green means now gas . I wouldn't install gas now even if it was FREE
Wow no tea bag reusing hate yet. I'd recommend African coffees if you haven't tried them yet, Ethiopian or Kenyan, nicer smell.
I know , I was expecting that abuse for that . Ethiopian yes but never found a Kenyan one I liked. I'm a medium fan, nothing too sharp

I tried the Virtuo version of the espresso which was the only one that serves decent sized coffees but the novelty wore off tbh

People see 800w on a microwave but do not know they use nearer 1300w!!!!
froffed milk and cream are a different thing, incase you didn't know ?
I do now 🤦♂️
