  • This is a 2005 Instrument cluster from a full size GM. It originally had odometer error. The owner accidentally installed the new eeprom in the 56585 location and caused the vehicle to not run.

    The difference in difficulty between soldering with or without the right equipment is akin to the difference between shooting a bullet and throwing it. Nice job . Pictures speak a thousand words and sometimes not saying something is the best course. Excellent.

    I got an 06 board that I was gonna use for the cluster of my own truck. I had repaired it previously and set it 260k miles then I shelved it for a good while due to not being ready to swap it. (I have an 02 truck and I'm swapping the whole cab harness and modules to 03+). I got it back out because I was almost ready for the swap and now it reads odometer 0 and it wont let me program it all, but I still have data line communication working. I have been looking for a few days for shorts but finding nothing albeit with my eyes and not a microscope. I don't have an 06 eeprom or good bin to dump on a replacement or I would try that, didn't know if 05 was the same because I got an 05 sitting around. Seen anything like this before?

    • @jeffescortlx
      @jeffescortlx  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It could be an issue with the eeprom, or I've also seen a damaged trace under the oil pressure stepper motor that can cause the eeprom to not communicate properly with a micro controller. Check that trace first next to the stepper motor pad, if it's okay send me an email and I can mail you an eeprom and a discounted rate.

    Thankfully the rest of the chips on the pcb were not damaged, why don't people use there eyes more?.
    I would have looked at the chip numbers and if i didn't recognise them, searching the net would be the next thing, not soldering without data.
    Sometimes going slow gets the job done quickly.
    I'm supprised you don't get annoyed with people that make a mess.
    I've had things come to my door that were 100% ruined by idiots, i have said "It's wrecked, not worth me trying to repair it.".

      If everyone was a excellent technician I'd be sleeping in a cardboard box under a bridge. So in a way I'm thankful for the way things turn out. A few years back I started getting more and more failed repair attempts. At first I was frustrated by it, but now I embrace it. Makes for good TH-cam entertainment!

      Yes i'm sure you're right, i just hated to see nice bits of equipment and radio gear turned into death city.
      Most things i repaired for people i would never have enough money to own, but envy and other negative emotions were not my thing, thankfully.
      Yes i've always enjoyed watching people repair things.
      Sometimes i learn something, sometimes lol.

    You should have shaved a few thousand miles off the odo while you were at it. Saw a mechanic turn back the clock on a 05 ram from 185k to just north of 70k, took him about 2 min, said he learned it working for a dealership, they did it all the time. People always focus on the odo as an indicator of vehicle health when in reality it is just a measurement of the distance traveled. smh
