An easier and quicker way to get the EEPROM off of the board is to firstly add some flux, solder flows so much better with flux. Then add some leaded solder to all of the pads. This will alloy with the lead free crap that's on the board. Lead free has a lower melting temperature. Then when you use the hot air, you can remove it quicker at a lower temperature. This is better for the pcb and surrounding components especially the VFD right beside

People seem to want everything, but not only is programming store on the EEPROM, but a class 2 serial signal of 0-7 volts toggle on-off to create a binary signal and that's not all. The power mode master is the BCM and the PCM contributes serial data info as well. The EEPROM on the IPC is receiving messages, decoding and providing information to the boards components to work. The BCM wakes up the IPC with an on signal, then the VIN is shared. A state of health message is sent every 2 seconds to the IPC by the BCM to make sure it is alive, if not, it goes into a back-up program if available. There is a lot going on in this not so simple dash and the EEPROM is only part of it. Ethical repair facilities will not roll-back mileage because it is illegal, so don't ask. Can it be changed, yes...but done with verification paper work and a photo of a working cluster, other wise problems have a way of coming back to bite you. SPS is service programming system available thru ACDelco, but you need a TECH2 or J2538 pass-thru programming device, plus a good stability voltage supply. So it's just all about swapping EEPROMS from old cluster to the new one? I just replaced mine from one I ended up buying at the local wrecking yard for about $30 bucks and it's already set up on the truck works perfectly fine and looks ok except for the extra amount of miles showing now and compared with the old original one cluster...
So I have a junkyard cluster I’m wanting swap my current one for so that I have a cluster that works with my steering wheel controls I just recently installed. I’ve tested the junkyard one and it works with the controls. My question is, can I just swap the EPROM chip over from my cluster that doesn’t have the options to work with steering wheel controls, to the junkyard cluster that does and it still work? The chip will just carry over my current mileage right? Or since it’s from a non controls cluster then it won’t work right with a control cluster?
Do you think this could be done on a 03-06 cluster that is going into a 2001. I have an '01 but I already swapped over a 03-06 cluster. I was just told by the dealer that they cant reflash a junkyard cluster so it would be awesome if this could work for my swap. It's manual shift so no gear indicator to worry about.
How often is VIN and mileage transfer this easy from one cluster to another, especially with European and Japanese vehicles? I always assumed this data was stored in the PCM / ECU... Thanks for the great video.
Most new cars today store the mileage in more than one module. If you don't change them all, it'll revert back to the old mileage. It stops most car thieves from swapping parts over on cars.
What if I don’t have the original cluster? The cluster on my car was switched. Basically the cluster I have now is not the original one. Is there a way I can find the original cluster?
Just finished watching the video as I too have had to replace my cluster in an 04 Envoy SLT but the chip you were working on in your video is not in the same location. Is it possible for my mechanic to change the milage in the chip that is currently in my SUV? and can they also change the VIN as you mentioned a couple of times that this chip has the VIN in it. Is there a tool that I can get to do the programming my self and not break the bank? What is the number of the chip to switch and will a hair dryer provide enough heat to pull the chip once I find it?
Could you tell us what tools & programs & where we would get them to get started in learning how to read & correct the mileage for 2005 Buick Park Avenues, thanks for all the information with us
Cedric Matchett Yes, class 2 serial data wakes up a module, shares the VIN, and sends a "State of Health" message every two seconds. A lot going on there including the address of the module to accept the message. ASE Master Tech since 1978 / Retired.
It depends on the Year, Model and car or truck. Trucks & Vans are last to get new technology as long as you are talking a GM. Otherwise you are right! I didn’t build or design them, as sometimes I am GM, while question is about a Nissan!
It won't damage the chip if you bring the temp up slowly and just to or slightly above the melting point of the solder. You can and I have damaged chips before. Find an old scrap electronics board and practice. Doesn't take long to get the skills to pull and install chips with confidence. You do need to be carefully when working on crowdes boards. It's possible to bump or loosen parts next to the one you're after but again with practice its easy to avoid.

I need a beginners course on electronics. How to identify what does what, how to use the software that reads the chip. Hope you can have a beginners series or which steps, prerequisites to have before getting to this point
What part would you like to learn? I can try to put some videos together for you but I might need a little more specifics. Are you looking for automotive diagnostics and what to look for? Programming or electronics repair. Most automotive components are borderline impossible to find schematics for so I kind of try to look at the big picture of what needs to be done. If a part is completely dead I start at the power supply portion of the board. If it has a bad input or output I will look at the pinout for that module . find the pin and follow the traces on the board until I find the problem. The biggest help or advise I can give you to get started troubleshooting is to learn the components of an electrical circuit and how to test them. Perhaps thats where ill start. How to identify , test and replace damaged parts in a module. Resistors, mosfetts , diodes, capacitors, and other common parts that fail.
Jack Meyers that would be awesome if that's not too much trouble Jack. I'm sure plenty of us will gain valuable knowledge. I started doing basic automotive diagnostics but I need to get this scan tool (ms906bt) to really get into it. Ultimately I wanna get to the point of understanding what makes a circuit board and how to read it, repair it etc. So anything that is very basic level electronics and automotive diagnostics will be much appreciated. I feel that most other channels are talking to other experts instead of focusing on the diyer.

Hi excellent videos , I have a quick question for ya f you don’t mind. the wife’s 04 Tahoe LT we bought used I’m sure has a cluster from another vehicle as the mileage is off I’m sure but that’s not my issue. The Tahoe every time it’s started has a message on the dic -service brake booster. A quick button push on the dash will clear it till the next key cycle. Since the Tahoe has hydroboost brakes it has no vacuum booster & I figure the donor that the cluster came from a truck that did. Are you capable of repairing it ? I have found a Chevy tsb on it & how to repair it but my local dealerships only are interested in swapping with a cluster from them & the outrageous cost that goes with it. Thanks for your time!
Brian Higginbotham While working at the dealer, cluster where always sent away to an authorized GM repair facility. There are 8 or so around the country. The cluster or IPC as it is called, is programed for a different VIN number and was not hydroboost. The VIN contains the info required for it to recognize and respond properly to all of the RPO codes on the glove box lid for that VIN #. Even the factory scan tool is not allowed to change IPC info as the Chinese TECH2 are on the market, but a lot of hanky-panky could go with mileage and other equipment. You would have to research, but there are places that with the proper VIN, can fix your cluster. Just make sure to have your wallet ready as they may accept a customer outside the GM dealer network...Maybe. ASE Master Tech since 1978 / Retired

This chip is one developed 30+ years ago. It is an electronic erasable program read only memory. So to your question, yes. It is programmed with the VIN of vehicle and mileage both. During the 80’s, the PROM was removable from a socket with a handle. It was placed by part number and the part number is picked by the VIN. Everything is stock on the vehicle, so it comes exactly the same or programmed with new info in certain categories to fix a problem. The reader use comes with software the displays information on this EEPROM. Many are used. ASE Master Tech since 1978-Retired. Hope this answers your question, which is not very clear.
@@deankay4434 im asking the same question. Is it enough swaping the eeproms or do they need programming? taking into consideration that they are storing 2 different VIN numbers
Ibra Far, I am afraid the answer is yes, you will have two VINs stuck in the system. It would have to be reprogrammed off vehicle. See, I spent 7+ years on contract with GM. They hired the best & brightest while creating their own chips. Many are normal everyday stuff but the speed at which an engineer could make a change, another tech would use GM software, pick the components (SMDs), design the PC board if needed and emailed the file. Week later, chips or completed boards came and the engineers ran off like Christmas presents. I you read the top/first comment, I tried to lay out how the system works. State-of-Heath of each major component from the radio to the dash report to the body control module. You turn the key on or crank, the BCM controls the electrical load by sending wake-up message, followed by the VIN. Power-Mode-Master, Load-Sheding are all strategies used to make just an alternator last longer. The problem is, they develop new strategies for the next generation. Sorry to be long, but this info is stuck in my head. You can try to change your eeprom, but the dash may not wake up. Jeff has some good videos and great equipment. I do to including SPS and TECH2, schematics and diagnostic flow charts. Unfortunately, these are written for the tech in the shop, not guys like Jeff. I have worked on cars on the side for extra money but arthritis has taken it away. Jeff I would guess has it much better than I. You will most likely see the VIN in a chip reader, as Jeff blocks it out by blurring, just like license plates on TV shows. Wish I could help more. It is not simple. Best of luck buddy! DK.
@@deankay4434 i did swap the eeprom chips and it worked. I got the correct mileage on the instrument cluster i bought from the junkyard. It seems that nissan 2001-2006 xtrail models don't have the vin number saved into them.
Ibra, Dude I glad you got your problem fixed, but I thought you were asking about a GM product! I am sorry as I was talking Oranges and you are working on Apples. I didn’t not know. Interesting enough as in 1978 working at the Nissan/Datsun dealer, I was asked to take a series of test, 8 of them. I did and passed all in one night. 40-60 questions on each test, times eight categories. That was the “National Institute Of Automotive Service Excellence”. I became an ASE Master Tech in 1978. As far as Datsun / Nissan, I owned 8-9 of them, including a 1976 280Z. I still own a 1969 Datsun 1600 Roadster (SPL-311) which is a full frame 2dr. convertible that is the grandfather to the entire “Z” car series. Go online a look for 1969 Datsun “Fairlady” as this name was used from 1965 - 1979 when the 280 ZX came out, in August of 1978. I was working on them as twin “SU” carbs were used on the Roadster, 240Z, 260Z as I had Yamaha dealer experience synchronizing multiple carbs using a propane enrichment tool and a carb air volume tool used at idle and up. Many moons ago. Damn, just got older, just now! Again! Take care!
Why doesn't it show the mileage where it shows the vin when you read the chip on your minipro program? and you edit the mileage from that program? I tossed my old cluster and am looking for a .bin file for a 2007 suburban with around 150k, is that something you would have?
VIN is in decimal but miles, trip and all other info is in HEX. I'm sure there is a was to convert the HEX info into decimal, but I there are scan tools on the chinese market that does it all for you.
jeffescortlx is absolutely correct. It's pretty easy to convert the hex but it still doesn't show as a numerical value we see on the dic. I have a couple inexpensive tools that edit the info without the need to just like you said. I would say my recovery rate on a dead board is about 95 percent. I have every part on the clusters new from the oem manufacturer and many donar boarfs but even at that when I get a completely dead one I keep the eeprom off the core and swap it. That's my preferred method. Eliminates the variables and takes literally 5 minutes. I've never in all my years of repairing them come across a dead prom chip. And in all honestly there should be no other need for an odometer correction other then transfering from a dead cluster. That's why I left the part out on how to edit it. Liability . I didn't want to be the one showing how to go in and change your odometer just wanted to show how to transfer what is already in someone's cluster.
Hi sir Jack, worth to subscribe on your youtube channel. Sir the chip reader comes with software when purchase or you purchase it separately? Thank you.
Laurence Lee Roceta Comes with it. They all come with software. There are many hex editors you can download free as well. I depends on what you're trying to read. I usually use the gq 4x4 programmer for simple eeproms . The interface is a little better but I had already set up the minipro. Either one is good.

Is there a way to send you my cluster to be repaired? My gauges aren’t working. It’s a 05 GMC Sierra and I have a 2500 gas cluster in it so I have a trans temp gauge. I need the stepper motors replaced, would like the back lights to be replaced to brighter lights, have the mileage corrected and make sure there’s no broken solder joints anywhere on it. If there’s a way to send it to you let me know and I’ll ship it to you and pay you with PayPal, or however you take your payments.
The short answer is no. First it is against the law to misrepresent the true mileage of the vehicle. Also, there is the VIN that is shared with the master in this year range, the VIN is sent to the body control module. If it does not match, it will set a code after two failures and parts of the cluster may work while other items may not. On a Chrysler for a number of years, if you had a module from a vehicle with a different VIN, after the 3rd attempt to start or run the vehicle, it shut down and locked up 5 or 6 modules. Now no good and have to be replaced and go thru a programming procedure. Hope that helps. I would not do it. You can’t make it work at home! Retired ASE Master Tech-GM
@@deankay4434 I was wondering because I did an 05 to 06 Diesel swap on my truck. I want the mileage on the 06 cluster from the 05 cluster. I have to use the 06 cluster because of how the info is displayed is different between the 2. So if anything I'd be more representing the actual mileage of the vehicle. The 06 cluster has almost 100k more miles on it. So far I've been running the 06 ECM&TCM with the 06 Cluster with the 05 BCM without issue. Had to do the security relearn and off we went. Fun fact on the diesels pre 07 trucks. The security light can be on and the truck still start and run. Security Doesn't shut the truck off at least when you swap bcm or ignition components.
First, I don’t work on duramax but the voltage drop across the theft system only has a small number of actual resistors in the key cylinder sensor. One is tamper only while the other matches learned voltage in BCM. Perhaps you got lucky with the exact match. If you win the lotto, I expect a share and so would Jeff! God bless, I don’t gamble!

@@deankay4434 So what are my options? Ive seen people upgrade them... Maybe buy a factory trans temp,DIC cluster have it flashed for my truck and mileage and install the wheel and associated wiring and clock spring?
@@adamcameron1935 I went into my GM eSI today to look at your 03 GMC trans temp circuit. The sensor is a thermistor (Common) that changes resistance with temperature. It is on the inside of the transmission on the hydraulic valve position switch. Using two wires, terminal "L" YEL/BLK & "M" GRY, both go into the PCM. The PCM changes the return signal to "Class 2" serial data, and sends it to the IP cluster. Logic in the cluster drive the Stepper Motor used in the Trans Temp location. So, if wires are there, the cluster may not have the driver for the Stepper Motor on the board. I don't know and perhaps Jack Meyers does. As a dealer tech, later a teacher, We verified the customer concern, then after stand checks, including visuals, we followed the diagnostic flow chart. Not experimenting with the wires or blank empty holes on a PC board. Yes, there is a feature on the steering wheel to push a button and bring up info in the drivers information center or DIC. According to GM cluster replacement procedure, a tech can reprogram and replace cluster, but requires several things. #1 The VIN number and perhaps a VCI or "Vehicle Configuration Index from the "Tech Line", followed by any TSB's that may effect the components. Each code on the glove box door means tire size, paint, temp gauge, etc. These a RPO codes or regular production codes. This is where the "Tech Line" providing a VCI # would come in handy. What I am trying to say is, IF the Tech Line" could provide a VCI# just for the temp gauge, it would program the cluster, but perhaps also the PCM as it needs to know to send that info or ignore it, because "That VIN" does not have a trans temp gauge. It is above my pay grade. Other than buying a couple of beers for a GM tech to pick his or hers info, they would not know until they called the "Tech Line" who always asked for the dealer code before going into any work. Getting the VIN # off a GMC in a parking lot with a trans temp gauge on it, may and will change a lot of things. The BCM is the "Power Mode Master". It sends the "State-of-Health" messages and if not response, flags the module that quit communicating. But is also "Wake-Up" each class2 device on the network when starting. As you can see, it get complex quickly. Some GMT800 truck forums may tell you to add-on and aftermarket gauge on your "A" pillar and wire as needed. Once upon a time, early 90's, GM had simpler designs taking the Buick RoadMaster. Now, now, the police version was the Chevy Caprice and people did get the VIN # and program there vehicle to change performance and top speed which is determined by tire ratings. While teaching FBI garage techs, State police techs, I sat down in the lunch room one day and 12 highway patrol guys came in. They got to talking about those departments that had the Ford Crown Vic. While responding to a long distance mid-west wreck, an officer said he was going about 112-116 MPH in his Crown Vic maxed out, and out of no where, a Caprice officer passed him at 140+ MPH. He said he let off the gas and figured he would be last to get there. I have said this many times, your vehicle is now, a computer on four wheels, with room for the owner, some friends and your stuff. Other than that, it looks like a vehicle. It is not so much the car companies, but government started it by adopting CARB guidelines to control emissions. This is now evolved and used for convenience and global architecture. A normal radio can be changed to pickup stations in different parts of the world, but plug in a factory amp, the class 2 input causes the radio to default to a lower but clear output for the amp. Look, car companies can not control to cost of labor or parts, but under warranty, if the diagnostics are easy, year, make, model, special function, roll down pass windows, widow rolls down "Yes/ No". Go to driver side switch, push to roll down passengers window, does the screen show activity? No, replace driver door module, reprogram. So, the time it take to accurately diagnose the root cause is quick and cheaper because of design. ASE Master Tech since 1987/Retired

What's the voltage tu turn the cluster on?
Which pins do you use ?
where do i find how to correct the mileage on the reader?
How often is VIN and mileage transfer this easy from one cluster to another, especially with European and Japanese vehicles? I always assumed this data was stored in the PCM / ECU... Thanks for the great video.
Most new cars today store the mileage in more than one module. If you don't change them all, it'll revert back to the old mileage. It stops most car thieves from swapping parts over on cars.
What if I don’t have the original cluster? The cluster on my car was switched. Basically the cluster I have now is not the original one. Is there a way I can find the original cluster?

What is the number of the chip to switch and will a hair dryer provide enough heat to pull the chip once I find it?

So can a buy a chip from you programed to the milage of my truck? The one in the odo I got is roughly 70k miles higher
Could you tell us what tools & programs & where we would get them to get started in learning how to read & correct the mileage for 2005 Buick Park Avenues, thanks for all the information with us
What's the part number for the factory chips?
So the vin has to be programmed for the cluster to work properly?
Cedric Matchett Yes, class 2 serial data wakes up a module, shares the VIN, and sends a "State of Health" message every two seconds. A lot going on there including the address of the module to accept the message.

Dean Kay it doesn’t have to be programmed to work
It depends on the Year, Model and car or truck. Trucks & Vans are last to get new technology as long as you are talking a GM. Otherwise you are right! I didn’t build or design them, as sometimes I am GM, while question is about a Nissan!
Does the hot air not damage the chip or does it not loosen solder joints around other items that are close to the chip

So you just have to transfer that chip to the new used cluster and it will display your old mileage?
This chip is one developed 30+ years ago. It is an electronic erasable program read only memory. So to your question, yes. It is programmed with the VIN of vehicle and mileage both.
During the 80’s, the PROM was removable from a socket with a handle. It was placed by part number and the part number is picked by the VIN. Everything is stock on the vehicle, so it comes exactly the same or programmed with new info in certain categories to fix a problem. The reader use comes with software the displays information on this EEPROM. Many are used.

Again! Take care!
When you say 400 degrees, is that Fahrenheit centigrade?

Why doesn't it show the mileage where it shows the vin when you read the chip on your minipro program? and you edit the mileage from that program? I tossed my old cluster and am looking for a .bin file for a 2007 suburban with around 150k, is that something you would have?
Joshua Zach let me check. Very good possibility.
that'd be great!!! I can give you my email if you find one even close to it, thanks!
If you run across an "odometer error" cluster you'll need to make a eeprom for it. Doesn't happen a lot, but it does happen.
Can I swap that chip from an 05 to and 06 cluster?

I'm looking to upgrade my 03 SLE-2 Sierra with steering wheel controls and a trans gauge is there a option for you to sell me the updated code or chip if I read my chip and send it to you?
That information is stored in the microprocessor, not the eeprom.
All of that new info goes into the "Body Control Module" and then thru class 2 serial data to the IPC or cluster. Not gonna work!
@@deankay4434 to add steering wheel controls to a 03 you just have to wire in the buttons and reflash the cluster.
Not experimenting
with the wires or blank empty holes on a PC board.
